Oakland, CA, hip-hop group Main Attrakionz plays Riot Fest this year, so we spoke to one half of the duo MondreM.A.N.O

Yellow Scene: When did the group form, and what was the mission?

MondreM.A.N.: The group formed when we were 13 years. I don’t know if you know Shady Blaze from Green Ova, that’s our family, but we were doing this thing called Oakland Idol, me and Squadda Bambino – it was a local TV show in Oakland. We met somebody who liked our music, and he made beats. In the next few days, we all linked up and recorded three songs, and tried to put a group together. We came up with the Main Attrakionz. There were three of us at first but then we didn’t see Shady for a few years so me and Squadda ran with the name.

YS: Describe the sound…

MM: It just comes from the heart, it comes from the soul, it comes from the mind. I don’t think we really have a style. It’s just us. We’re being ourselves and telling the truth. That’s all we can do.

YS: Are you looking forward to Riot Fest?

MM: Shout out to Denver – we just came back from Denver. I love it out there. We’ll be ready. I just hope it’s not cold.

YS: What can we expect from your set?

MM: A live show. Good energy, good vibes. I hope everybody else we’re performing with is ready, because we’re going to do our jobs. We’ll bring a lot of smiles to the venue. I hear that the tree is legal out there, so it’s gonna be real loud.

YS: When Riot Fest is over, what’s next?

MM: We do another festival in Chicago, and after that we’ll keep promoting this album, 808s and Dark Grapes III, so everybody should go get that album and support the Main Attrakionz.

Main Attrakionz plays Denver Riot Fest; August 28-30; riotfest.org/denver.
