Erie Could Have Healthier Teeth

It’s a scientific fact that Boulderites have whiter teeth than Erie residents. (more…)

An Annoying Detour

Applaud the town of Erie for completing the road project that has Briggs Street now connecting all the way to Leon A. Whurl Parkway. It’ll make business in Old Town boom. But don’t get down on the town for closing off the Perry Street connection from County Road 8 to Briggs that forces those heading from I-25 into Old Town into a permanent, annoying two-minute detour. Officials admit it’s not the ideal situation, but the railroad company won’t allow another crossing over its dormant tracks, just in case the tracks go live, say for a commuter train to Boulder.

What’s Next: We’re happy to hear a commuter line is possible—even if it’s decades off—and the town will tear up the closed off section and replace it with something green by spring.

Going Wild For Buffalo
The Colorado Coal Company has long been luring customers to Briggs Street in Erie with steaks, burgers and a classic, historic Western feel. It’s worked. But that hasn’t stopped the eatery from improving. You can now order a lean buffalo burger or a succulent buffalo steak. Sales of the new item have slowly been picking up steam since joining the menu last month, meaning it’ll likely become a mainstay. For information on the Colorado Coal Company, 578 Briggs St., call 303.828.4005.

Hippy Bread For All
Boulder has always been a popular place for pseudo hippies to live green, eat organic and ride public transportation. So it makes sense for it to be home to a new commercial bakery, making breads with interesting flavors and organic roots. The Baker Organic offers eight varieties of bread including traditional favorites like whole wheat and seven grain. Then there’s the unique line featuring green tea, goji berry, pomegranate and yoga (pumpkin and sunflower seeds and cranberry) breads. All of The Baker Organic breads are infused with European flavors and have a hearty texture made of organic whole grains, fruit and nuts.

It’s All About The Wine Harvest
When was the last time you celebrated the grape harvest in Colorado? Thought so. Well as the state’s wine industry grows, we think it’s about time you start taking notice. Check out Balistreri Vineyards 2007 Harvest Party on Oct. 7 at its tasting room in north Denver where they’ll be celebrating the Western Slope grape yield. For $48 (in advance), receive a wine glass, appetizers, pizza, a pig roast, desserts, entertainment, tastings, and the new Balistreri wine release. For information on Balistreri Vineyards, 1946 E. 66th Ave., Denver, call 303.287.5156.

Umm, Biscuits and Gravy
There comes a time in our lives that we all wake up, dreaming of a crisp, flaky biscuit smothered in gravy. You can satisfy that urge by going to a restaurant and asking for a side order of biscuits and gravy. But that’s no fun. Instead, check out the fifth annual Erie Biscuit Days from 8 a.m.-noon on Sept. 15. There, the biscuit will be anything but an after thought. Local vendors will serve homemade stew on the side, and festival goers get to vote for their favorite. There will also be craft booths, a farmers’ market and live jazz starting at 9 a.m. Proceeds go toward Erie Historical Society projects. Call 303.828.3440 for information.

Longmont’s Sushi Destination
The menu at Sushi Café looks like your typical sushi restaurant it has all the requisite rolls, sashimi options and appetizers you’d expect. But the newish Japanese spot has finally given Longmont a bon-a-fide destination for sushi with fresh offerings usually associated with Boulder and Denver eateries. It also has a full menu of other Asian treats for those who aren’t huge fans of raw fish. For information on Sushi Café, 2315 Clover Basin Dr., call 303.651.6181.

Yet Another Reason To Mention The Erie Café
We may be a little too biased toward the new and improved Uptown Erie Café. This marks its third mention in this column since it re-opened its doors just a few short months ago. But the café keeps giving us reason to write about them and it happens to be just a half block away from our office. Most importantly, it has built the first true patio in Old Town Erie. When it gets its liquor license, we’re guessing it’ll be the hot spot for happy hour. Also check out a completely remodeled inside. For information on the café, 554 Briggs St., call 303.828.2501.

Things Change

But That’s Not Necessarily a Bad Thing For Colorado Coal Co.

When I last visited (and reviewed) Colorado Coal Company in Erie a few years back, I remember being impressed by its elegance and near-fine-dining atmosphere. I remember being shown to a table by a host and seated with a hardbound wine list reminiscent of any big-league steakhouse. I remember a delicious steak and a very reasonably priced bottle of Cabernet. (more…)
