For Libby Earthman, a Longmont-based realtor, autism wasn’t always something she understood. Growing up in the 1990s, Earthman was surrounded by stereotypes that framed autism as a condition primarily affecting males with high support needs. When her daughter was finally diagnosed at age 6, it felt confusing. “The struggles were there that you would expect of any child with autism,” Libby offered,”but the specifics around the presentation just weren’t.” 

What followed was years of learning to understand her daughter’s triggers and crafting a safe environment around her needs, not to change who she was, but to help her thrive as herself. Libby is quick to point out that there is nothing wrong with the autistic brain. “It is simply a different way of experiencing the world, one where certain channels are turned up.”

The Earthmans embraced this, transforming their living room into a sensory gym, complete with a yoga swing, a small cave-like retreat and an art station, so their daughter can be a part of the action while maintaining agency over her needs. Visual checklists help make daily transitions more predictable. And Longmont, she says, has been a gift. She pointed to small but meaningful moments, like discovering that a local movie theater stocks multiple sizes of noise-canceling headphones to borrow. “We’re not alone,” she said. “This community gets that there are different experiences, and we all deserve to be here.”

That perspective shapes her work with families navigating moves with sensory-sensitive children. She’s attuned to how an environment affects the nervous system, noticing the subtle discomfort of a home too close to a busy road, or the relief of an outdoor space that feels enclosed rather than exposed. She recommends making things as concrete and visual as possible for children well in advance, an applicable strategy for daily transitions as well. She’s also created a Sensory Moves Guide to help families think through their unique needs in a new home.

For Libby, navigating these situations ignited a desire to connect with families who’ve had similar experiences. Everyone knows it takes a village to raise a child, but it can be challenging to find that village when your child’s behavior doesn’t fit the mold.

Enter Inclusive Acres, a farm and local 501(c)(3) dedicated to building a neurodiversity-affirming community through free events for young children, tweens and their caregivers. Nicole Perelman founded the organization in 2022 with and for her family. She was inspired to give her  son, Bert, more opportunities to socialize, with the goal of creating an environment where differences are celebrated rather than managed. Since discovering Inclusive Acres, Libby has been grateful to participate in events with her daughter, and is now on the organization’s board.

During a recent farm tour, 10-year-old Bert led me through the property with ease, introducing each chicken, goat and horse by name and answering questions with a confidence that belied his age. He has played a part in building Inclusive Acres since he was 6, and the freedom, agency and support he’s been given along the way have shaped him into a natural leader.

Bert described the farm as a place where kids can “fully unmask and be themselves,” and be treated like “their own person.” He spoke warmly about the next generation of kids coming up through the organization’s events. “When they get to be our age, they can run Inclusive Acres, and we can be the board members,” he imagined. 

“This is a special place,” he said simply. Standing in the sunshine among the animals, it was hard to disagree.

Recently, we were invited to the opening of the Butterfly Pavilion’s new exhibit, Legacies: Invertebrates of Mexico—a preview night for members, media, and local supporters with a passion for bugs and biodiversity.

The evening kicked off with talks from expert entomologists (I call them bugologists), museum directors, and other guest speakers. Then came the food—an unforgettable spread of Mexican dishes by Chef José of La Diabla Pozole y Mezcal in Denver. We had chicken and veggie tacos, and yes—flying ant salsa and roasted grasshoppers.

The food wasn’t just delicious—it was a crash course in edible ecology. Those grasshoppers on the tlayuda? Also hanging out in the exhibit. The salsa made with flying ants? Yep, those too. But this wasn’t shock-and-awe bug-eating. After munching on these delectables, it was a treat to walk through the exhibit and see them up close. I was delighted by the joy of watching these critters scamper about in their aquariums and thoroughly enjoyed learning about each of them.

There was the cochineal, a tiny insect living on prickly pear cactus, once prized across continents for its brilliant red dye. It colored royal robes and religious art, and today it’s still used in textiles and even food coloring—proof that something so small can shape entire industries. Leafcutter ants moved steadily through their transparent tunnels, transporting leaf bits to their underground fungus farm—a real-life demonstration of just how organized and purposeful these tiny farmers really are. The red rump tarantula, with its bold black and crimson body, looked motionless under glass, but it plays a key role in balancing insect populations across its desert ecosystem. And then there were the millipedes. These detritivores break down organic matter, returning nutrients to the soil. They’ve even been used medicinally—at one time mashed into pastes to treat toothaches.

This wasn’t just about novelty—it was a reminder: these invertebrates have been part of life in Mexico for thousands of years, not just as food, but as essential players in keeping ecosystems functioning. Leafcutter ants enrich soil by breaking down plant material and farming fungi. Cochineal insects don’t just make dye—they’re part of a cactus-hosted microhabitat that supports birds, reptiles, and other insects. Tarantulas control pest populations, while millipedes help decompose organic matter and return nutrients to the soil. Throughout the exhibit, invertebrates were doing jobs the ecosystem can’t function without—recycling nutrients, aerating soil, managing pests, or supporting plants at the root level. Lose them, and the system starts to break down.

You can catch Legacies: Invertebrates of Mexico at the Butterfly Pavilion through December 31, 2025. The exhibit offers a rare chance to see the insects that shape our world—from the food we eat to the health of the soil beneath our feet. Attempts at censorship and book challenges are cropping up throughout Colorado and the rest of the country, particularly surrounding education and literature that bring visibility to the LGBTQ+ community and people of color. Attempts to stifle equality can feel shocking, yet efforts to suppress knowledge are actively underway. Yellow Scene Magazine took some time to try to understand the landscape of the movement. How does it seem that some see information on a range of age-appropriate identity possibilities and self-expression as harmful to our children? 

Unfortunately, no one on the pro-censorship side would agree to an interview. There has been a fair amount of buzz around the politicization of the Elizabeth School Board and its members’ staunch position against LGBTQ+ material in schools. YS reached out to three of the board members. President Rhonda Olsen declined our request for an interview. 

Vice President Heather Booth — who has given several previous media interviews — and Secretary Mary Powell — who we were particularly interested in talking to due to her longstanding history in the community and a background in law — both ignored our requests. The Colorado Times Recorder recently published an article on the Elizabeth School Board’s calculated political plans for hiring staff. Vice President Heather Booth defended these actions, stating that she is scared of the sexualization of children.

There is a long list of books banned or facing bans around the country. The most commonly banned books feature LGBTQ+ literature, either authors or themes. Often, books are deemed sexual by those who see the LGBTQ+ community as made up of sexual beings rather than humans with an alternative sexual orientation. Additionally, some literature written by authors of color centered around their unique narratives and experiences is deemed inappropriate by these groups as well. Very few of the listed books appear to be challenged on the grounds of violence or hate. The American brand of violence and hate may be more familiar and, therefore, more digestible. Violent themes aren’t raising red flags for many “traditional” families like identity politics are.

Some citizens from more conservative counties around Colorado believe that issues of diversity and equality should not be taught in schools. Much of this rhetoric is rooted in religious thought, which by definition should be separate from state education. The First Amendment states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” While the founding fathers weren’t concerned with the livelihoods of women or non-white men, they did make it clear that religion has no place in politics, unambiguously writing it into the Constitution. 

The principle of non-religious government was again reinforced in the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli, which begins with the statement, “As the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion…”  Therefore, by law, religion cannot be taken into account when making changes to school standards. 

The state and school board, however, have no control over conversations that parents have at home with their children. Home education is the most poignant of all. People who disagree with what’s being taught in schools can place their faith in individual rapport with their kids or the ability of their children to think for themselves. If these concepts are innately immoral, surely they can rely on most children’s internal moral compasses to guide them. So why the fear?

Repressing specific points of view, historical narratives, and social groups’ voices is far more dangerous than distributing radical literature or making space for radical narratives. One gives us options —  to use our educated brains and intuitive guts to analyze the material. The other rewrites reality, creating a sort of tunnel vision. 

The American Birthright Curriculum was developed by the Civics Alliance, a right-wing group in opposition to changes in social studies standards by the Colorado Department of Education, to be implemented in 2024. Some of the changes opposed by the Civics Alliance center around teaching the holocaust, genocide, and the inclusion of minority groups in history and government. Instead, the Civics Alliance proposes standards that focus on our more “classical” — or white — roots, which they link to Hebrew, Greek, and Roman ideals. Colorado state law allows school boards some control of content outside of state standards, and in the wake of these CO Department of Education changes, conservative counties are setting up school board meetings and votes to take advantage of this, bringing politics into education. 

The Civics Alliance’s mission statement purports that “education should teach students the founding principles of the United States.” Unfortunately, the founding principles of the United States excluded protection and rights for women and people of color. This distinction was further clarified in 1787 with the establishment of the Three-fifths Compromise, which defined Black slaves as lesser than other Americans.

The hefty time gaps between the country’s founding and the granting of more universal voting rights to first Black men and later to all women illuminate the mindsets of the Founding Fathers and early Americans. They had no interest in including women and non-white men. 

The United States was founded in 1776, Black people were freed from slavery in 1870, and women were given the right to vote in 1920. This doesn’t take into account Jim Crow-era policies, voter suppression, voter registration restrictions, criminalizing benign activities while waiting in long lines at ballot boxes, and erroneous voter purging.

We love a good paradox

On their site, the Civics Alliance praises Ohio policymakers that require universities and colleges receiving state funds to “commit themselves to free speech and intellectual diversity, and prohibit both ‘diversity statements’ and the imposition by required courses on training of ‘diversity, equity, and inclusion.’” How can one be committed to diversity while prohibiting diversity?

Douglas County is another Colorado locale surrounded by censorship buzz over the past few years. There are four specific books in the crosshairs of Douglas County’s far-right attempted book censorship, all centered around LGBTQ+ topics. They are: “The Hips on the Drag Queen Go Swish Swish Swish,” “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” “This Book Is Gay,” and “Jack of Hearts (and other parts)”. Though it need not be stated, no one is forced to check out these books, just as no one is forced to check out white supremacist literature at the local library. 

We, as citizens, are free to abstain from cultural events and literature as we see fit. So why this push to repress and eliminate cultural groups that aren’t like us? It certainly brings to mind dark historical events of our past.

This is the issue that scares us. Not that people disagree with others’ lifestyles but that they’re motivated to eliminate evidence of them. Any visibility of non-straight or non-white groups is seen by some as an agenda. 

We talked with Bob Pasicznyuk, the Executive Director of Douglas County Libraries, to try to gain a better understanding of the situation there. One of Pasicznyuk’s responsibilities is to review book appeals. When asked what his experience with book challenges was before 2023, he said when someone had an objection about certain material, it was generally a conversation. They simply wanted to be heard, and it rarely escalated to a formal request for a book’s removal from a library. In fact, in the ten years that Pasicznyuk has had this responsibility, he never once saw it escalate to an actual appeal. 

And then, in 2023, one man, Aaron Wood, founder of a Christian men’s activist group, took a handful of LGBTQ+ titles through the entire appeal process. During that time, his group was very vocal and active in library board meetings. Board meetings that usually had no attendance from the general public suddenly attracted more than one hundred concerned citizens, some in support of removing the books but more in opposition. In August, Douglas County Library System’s Citizens Board voted unanimously to keep the books on the shelves.

When we asked Pasicznyuk why the sudden change – ten years of the community not escalating a challenge to anything formal, and then five appeals in one year – he said, “I think in the last 2 years, it’s become a part of different political agendas … It’s part of their plan. And I also want to say this – I mean, it seems gratuitous – but intellectual freedom challenges aren’t the province of the right or the left or Republicans or Democrats. 

People make decisions for what’s in front of their children or themselves – or, for goodness sake, we have Mein Kampf. We don’t have it because we think it’s a wonderful book … But in the last couple of years, there’s been a concerted effort by party politics to get involved.” He talked about a person’s decision to check out the material or not, that the library’s responsibility is to provide a wide array of material, and the individual’s responsibility is to decide whether or not they or their children will engage with it.

He went further, addressing claims that library staff are pushing certain points of view on the public. “I think there’s a secondary claim that’s being made. It’s a claim that’s worthy, again, of self-examination. Are we promoting a particular viewpoint …? It’s not our role to say, ‘Hey. You need to change your value set.’ It also is kind of interesting because our organization does take a stand just by its very basis of what it is. Everybody is welcome in our library. Even that term has a political bent to it.”

He continued: “But I think that the conversation about books by or about gay people [has] not been very fair. We have heterosexual books with salacious content, and we have books about gay people with salacious content. Why is one inappropriate and the other one’s okay? If I use salacious content as a filter…, we’re not going to have the Bible.

“One of the claims people are making is that these things are brainwashing … so if I have a staff member who has 50 people [at] story time [presenting] a book [that] has a male dad figure and a female mom figure, am I trying to brainwash these kids? But if I have two women or two men in the same role, I’m brainwashing the kids. Again, trying to be consistent with me no matter what I view about family,” Pasicznyuk pointed out the hypocrisy.

The response to attempts at censorship has been enormous. Pasicznyuk reported that far more people from the Douglas County community showed up to defend intellectual freedom than to limit it. Organizations like Moms for Liberty, Civics Alliance, and far-right school boards may be loud, but they are not the majority. People from all political viewpoints feel passionate about squashing censorship. But the attempts are still concerning. 

YS was disturbed by the fear-mongering language encountered within the Civics Alliance and in videos put out by Moms for Liberty, such as comparing curriculum changes to Stalin’s Soviet brainwashing agenda within Russian schools, though ironically Stalin was trying to silence the same groups of people as Moms for Liberty. We asked about his concern level, having had a front-row seat to some of this activity. Should we be scared for the future, or does it just feel big because it’s happening now and to us? 

Pasicznyuk responded: “I don’t want to oversample the moment and say, look how terrible it is. And it’s never been like this before. At the same time, these are important topics, and in history, when they’ve gone off the rails, you should’ve paid a lot of attention to them. We should be careful. 

“Oppressing someone else is sort of baked into our DNA. How do I keep from doing that even though I disagree? And if somebody told me that my kids were at a very young age having to encounter content that was very different from my moral framework, I think it’s perfectly appropriate that they would engage the teachers or the school and say, ‘How do I work with this because I need an alternative? I think this isn’t working for me.’ But again, to make rules for everyone about that seems to be antithetical to American life, you know?” He concluded.

So, should we be panicking? Probably not. Should we be vigilant? Definitely.

Two moves, a massive spring snowstorm, a downpour of rain, a lot of community support, and 57,000 steps later, The Return of SuperKids 2024 indeed took place this past weekend. But it almost didn’t.

The Most Unlikely of Heroes and How a Real Estate Company Rescued SuperKids

It’s been four years since Yellow Scene Magazine’s beloved SuperKids Expo took place. Prepandemic SuperKids Expo had grown to 6,500 people in 2019. (Sidenote: In 2016 it was 8,000 people, thanks to Stephen Tebo, who brought the Batmobile) But then COVID hit, and SuperKids Expo was no longer providing families a super fun free day to play and be whoever they wanted to be. 

For 24 years, YS has covered important education and social topics for families. Since inception, we have been proud to have earned over 160 awards for excellence, with over 50 awards specifically for education. We wanted a way to help our local camps, schools, and after-school programs to reach local families in person, and in 2009, SuperKids Expo was born. SuperKids Expo became an iconic Boulder County event for eleven years, running through 2019. It was already planned for 2020; you know the rest of the story, it didn’t. 

The decision to bring SuperKids Expo back in 2024 was a big one. We no longer had the same size staff we previously had. It had been four long years. Would anyone even remember it? Would it still serve our community? Finances are not easy for local media, so would we even have the money? Community feedback was strong, and we decided to start planning. The Fowler Group, Paul’s Coffee + Tea (which has a killer bluegrass jam every Sunday), and Cosmo’s Pizza all helped with sponsorship seed money. Jax Outdoor Gear provided the location. Now, it was just a matter of organizing vendors and entertainment.

In years past, we had always picked the Superhero movie theme of the year for our event, but in 2024, we decided we wanted Barbie. We had no idea how significant this choice would become.

Barbie was born in 1958 and was the first modern doll for girls to play with. Before Barbie, little girls were given baby dolls to teach them how to become mothers, but Barbie, well, she was dazzling. She was single, lived in her own apartment, had her own job, had a boyfriend, and wore high heels! In 1968, the first Black Barbie, Christie, was introduced. Barbie was a modern representation of what it meant to be an Independent woman free to make her own choices.

Of course, the movie’s success encouraged us, but as we approached the actual date of the event, a huge obstacle presented itself — the weather. We had no idea how much we would have to draw on Barbie’s spirit. After all, she tells us, “You Can Be Anything!”

First, the original date, April 20th, was snowed out, so we moved it to our rain date the following weekend. Of course, we saw a beautiful 75° the next day, on Sunday. However, on Monday, weather predictions told us there would be torrential rain on our new April 27th date. 

Now, what to do? We had already moved the date once! Disaster was quickly approaching. 

We reached out to all of our amazing vendors, who turned out to be SuperHeroes themselves. 

We asked them what they wanted us to do: Should we try to find an indoor location or move the date again? They gave us the green light to find an indoor spot if we could. We set about to find a place to welcome our big outdoor event inside their facility, which was set to happen in less than five days. 

We called everyone: the school district, private schools, warehouses, event venues, and private businesses. All said no; it was too short notice. After all, the event was just a few days away. 

On Tuesday, our publisher drove around Lafayette, trying desperately to find a place to move to. On a whim, she entered The District in Lafayette, across the street from our first location at Jax Outdoor Gear. There was no way they would say yes. They have a multitude of businesses we would be invading as well. But we decided to ask anyway – we had nothing to lose. We were given Helen’s phone number; she was the person to talk to. We told Helen about our situation, and within hours, she had Dutton Commercial’s blessing, and they generously said yes, but only if we could get the other businesses to sign off. 

In the true spirit of SuperKids, the community came together. Button Rock Bakery & Kenny Lou’s Deli, Otis Craft Collective, Flatirons Community Church, Nok’s Donuts, and Base Camp Coworking all said yes! It was a go. 

Now, the hard work of redoing everything came. From the signs we had already made to the site map to social media, everything we had done needed to be redone, including all of our advertising with the wrong date and location on it. Even the new signs we had just made to announce the new date were wrong. It was too late to reprint an ad or the flyers we had already distributed. Thankfully, Post-Net of Lafayette put a rush order together for new-new yard signs, and we started plastering the streets on Thursday and Friday.

We moved a major event indoors to a fantastic location in four days. Now, would anyone show up?

Our vendors deserve the Academy Award as well. Rather than yelling at us for all the problems moving because of the weather, they came out and supported us. They showed up in the rain, dealt with typos, rushed reorganization of their spaces, and a novice event layout (we learned some things about indoor space, music, and sound). They juggled these changes with us and made The Return of SuperKids Expo 2024 not just amazing but a super amazing event. 

One parent told us that her child celebrated their birthday at SuperKids. Imagine that we gave a child an amazing party.

All of these organizations deserve our love. A HUGE thank you to them for overcoming obstacles and giving our community a wonderful way to spend a rainy day being whoever they want to be.

Face-to-Face Painting provided the awesome designs, and balloon art was provided by XL Entertainment and The Fowler Group. Square State Skate taught some skate tricks, and American Ninja contestant and Ark Ninja owner Nathan “Gnarly Nate” Hansen provided the obstacle course and strength training (our publisher didn’t last that long on the bars). Check out his story. It is also a journey of overcoming hard obstacles and achieving tremendous success. He truly is just as nice in person as he is on TV.

Front Range Inflatables pivoted three times with us because of date and location but also changed the bounce house’s size at the last minute. They also provided additional entertainment at the last minute since the Rock Wall couldn’t fit. Thank you to Big Air Jumpers for changing dates and dealing with a day before cancellation. A shout out to Eldorado Spring Water, whose pool is opening this summer after years of being closed, provided extra water for free. Even tho it was pouring outside, it wasn’t the water we could drink.

Seb’s Wood-fired Pizza braved the rain by serving the most delicious pizza from his food truck. Because of the weather, outside business was much slower than we had hoped, but the pizza was still incredible. We really want to give a shout-out to Seb, who is available for hire at any event. He will also show up for you no matter the obstacles, even when others can’t. 

As a news outlet that remains true to strict journalism standards, the world has changed a lot, and it is no small battle for our heroes and heroines — the journalists and the artists — who create the great stories we publish throughout the year. We are celebrating our 24th year of award-winning journalism this year, but we can only carry on because of the amazing support of this community. 

To all who came out in the pouring rain to make this day happen, from the 800+ people who showed up in the bad weather to all the vendors, performers, sponsors, and hosts, you are our heroes and had more impact than you may even know. A lot of families had a fun way to spend a rainy day. Happy Birthday to the little boy who celebrated with us!

Barbie taught us that not only can we be anything we want to be, but we can also overcome anything together. (The secret is not to give up.)

Update due to weather

We might have super powers, but we can’t stop the weather. Winter Barbie decided to visit so we are moving The Return of SuperKids Expo to April 27th, so Summer Barbie has more fun.

SuperKIDS Expo Returns April 20th in Lafayette

After four long years, Yellow Scene Magazine is bringing back SuperKids!

From 2009-20219 SuperKids was the largest family event highlighting camps, schools, extracurriculars and community services along with lots of fun for the kids; bouncy castle, rock-climbing wall, activities, performances and more!

This year, our Superhero theme is Barbie, but everyone is encouraged to dress up in their favorite Superhero costume!

The Return of Superkids is in Lafayette this year, at Jax Outdoor Gear at Hwy 287 & S. Boulder Road. The fun runs from 10 am – 3pm on April 20th, 2024. Rain date April 27th. (*We will not cancel for light sprinkles or gray skies, only torrential weather.) Wear your favorite superhero costume and bring your superhero heart for a great family day.

Coupled with the event, is SuperKids Camp Guide, which publishes March, 2024. In addition to the largest camp directory and the largest circulation in town, we have four great features, camps for kids on all spectrums, the history of the Black Cowboy, and AI impacts on society and of course the FREE Camp Listings.
