The 2026 Best of the West Poll Is Open (and it’s the real write-in ballot)

Some “Best of” lists are curated. Ours isn’t.

Yellow Scene Magazine’s Best of the West is Boulder County’s only true Readers’ Poll — because it’s an open, write-in ballot. No drop-down menus. No prompts nudging you toward the usual suspects. Just you telling us, in your own words, who actually deserves the crown this year.

And yes, the 2026 Best of the West Poll is now open. You’ve got one month to vote.

What makes Best of the West different?

A couple things we have to say out loud, because the internet has made everything weird:

1) You don’t pay to “get on the list.”
We don’t sell placements, and we don’t stack the ballot. Our journalism standards apply across the board, including this poll. If a business wins, it’s because readers wrote them in, not because someone bought their way into a drop-down.

2) We don’t phone in the winners coverage.
When the votes are counted, we spend real time making sure each winner blurb reflects the actual locale that won and is interesting to our readers, not copy-pasted fluff. Best of the West is part community record and part local love letter.

The indie folk band discusses the feel of their new album and song, “Arrow,” ahead of their October 16 performance at Boulder Theater

American indie folk band The Head and the Heart finished mixing their new album this month, marking the band’s sixth album since its conception in 2009. The band has collected multiple Grammy nominationns and platinum records over the last 15 years. Their new single, “Arrow,” debuted this past week.

When asked about their new song, John Russell, vocalist, and songwriter, believes that art does not need to be explained but rather interpreted by the listener. But Russell cannot help but describe the song as an ode to empowerment.

“When I perform the song Arrow, I feel like I am 10 feet tall – I feel confident, grounded, and proud of where I am at. It is almost like an exclamation point. A superhero costume for your mind to celebrate your achievements”, said Russell. “Maybe like a…brain cape.”

“Yeah, maybe that is the new album title – brain cape,” added piano player Kenny Hensley.

The band seems to be taking some personal liberties with “brain cape.” Hensley explained that for the first time in three albums, the band created this one without outside noise.

“It just feels like this album had equal slices of the pie between the six of us. Everyone’s hands were together in the making of the record – probably the most since our first record,” said Russell.

After 14 years and many “Rivers and Roads,” the band is returning back to their debut sound.

“In this record, we have kind of gone back to our roots in the sense, where it was just us in the studio.

We self-produced [the record] and called all the shots. I think our fans are really going to enjoy it because – at least the fans of our earlier stuff – it is going to feel like they have their band back. We have returned home in a sense,” Hensley said.

Since finishing their tour, the band spent the past two months “neck deep in mixing and finishing the record,” making the final tweaks and edits to each track. This process is highly collaborative for The Head and the Heart, as every band member has a say in all business and creative decisions.

The completion of the album itself comes with many emotions, but mainly feelings of accomplishment and relief.

“It is so cliche, but [the record] really feels like our baby. We have this deep connection to it, and we want it to be loved and nurtured – it is a weird thing,” said Hensley.

The band’s first event since concluding their album creation was last week at the Boulder Theater, where they collaborated with Teton Gravity Research at their film screening.

East Window Gallery in Boulder, Colo., is quickly establishing its reputation amongst the NoBo Arts District as Boulder’s “Library of Alexandria,” an irreverent ode to nonconformity. A great deal of time, energy, and resources have been invested to make East Window what it is today, and the programming is curated with thoughtful diligence. East Window brings awareness to world issues through supporting artistic and cultural expression.

More than a gallery, East Window is an independent arts organization. Founded in May 2020, East Window started out as a single window on the east side of the Boulder Bicycle warehouse building on North Broadway.

According to founding director and visual artist Todd Edward Herman, the goal of East Window is to bring visibility to historically marginalized artists who exist in all communities of color, including Black, Indigenous, Asian, LGBTQ+, nonbinary, Two-Spirit, and people with disabilities and chronic illness. 

East Window’s resolve is to promote the art and culture of these underrepresented communities and provide a platform for people from all backgrounds to share their hearts and minds through exhibitions and public programming. In other words, East Window is bucking the status quo in ways that make one “question habits of understanding, looking, and storytelling.” The artists and exhibitors that show at East Window turn a mirror on the world and reflect back to it the impacts of discrimination, colonization, and the harsh realities of living in a society fueled by capitalism.

East Window is an annex to the studio of the visual artist and founder. His work has generated collaborations with artists on books, films, performances, and exhibitions around the world. Herman is a co-founder and long-time collaborator with Sins Invalid, a performance project that incubates, celebrates, and centralizes artists with disabilities, artists of color, and queer and gender-variant artists. Most recently, Herman was interviewed by Kevin Hoth for The NoBo Artist Podcast.

Since moving to its current location at 4550 Broadway, Ste C-3B2, in Boulder, the passionate team at East Window has curated more than 30 events, exhibits, installations, and workshops. Working notably with Kali Spitzer, Alex Stark, Yvens Alex Santil, and The Plentywolf Singers, East Window also offers a one-of-a-kind reading room full of a variety of titles and many local and regional authors.

Yellow Scene was able to chat with Herman about East Window’s origins and his vision for the gallery’s future. 

Let’s talk a little bit about your background. This is where you can share anything that isn’t in your bio on the EW website (I will also be pulling from there).

In my personal artistic work, I try to question habits of understanding, looking, and storytelling. I examine how images compose, enforce, or undermine—rather than simply reflect—ideas of history, dominant values, authenticity, and authorship. To a large degree, this informs much of what happens at East Window.

What motivated you to open East Window?

The studio space I was renting in Feb. 2020 had a 5ft x 8ft east-facing window. With the pandemic and subsequent shutdown in March of that same year, we all began to avoid being inside public spaces, this of course, included art galleries.

I informally began to contact friends and colleagues to see if they’d be interested in showing their artwork in my studio window for a few weeks at a time so people walking by could view it at a distance, in the open air. Everyone I approached seemed to really like the idea. I honestly didn’t have any thoughts about growing East Window into a formal exhibit space. It just felt good to make the window available to artists to show their work at a time when less opportunities were available to do so.

Awareness of this window spread quickly, and by 2021, we found ourselves partnering with other art organizations and educational institutions to expand our curatorial possibilities. In addition to showing local and regional artists, we began to show works by internationally renowned artists. We even had outdoor film screenings in the spring and summer months. 

In November 2022, we moved into our current space at 4550 Broadway in the North Boulder Arts District. We are utilizing every square foot of our 820 square feet. This includes our main indoor gallery, an outdoor patio exhibit space, a reading room, and, of course, our exhibit window—it took us a while, but we found a space with an actual east-facing window! 

What type of art/artists can guests to EW expect to encounter?

In 2023, we hosted over 30 exhibitions, installations, film screenings, readings, workshops, and artist talks, bringing together so many amazing people around relevant and often difficult collective issues as well as personal themes.

The artists showing at East Window have all, in one way or another, been marginalized within the art world as well as at large socially.

East Window is an accessible space, inside and out.

You’ve done a lot in the past two years as an arts organization. Who have you enjoyed working within the past two years in the arts community? 

Truthfully, it’s been a pleasure to work with each institution, organization, and individual whose paths have crossed with East Window from its inception. I’ve learned such a great deal from every collaboration and partnership.

How do you curate experiences at East Window? As in, what is your process?

We try to level the playing field in terms of exhibiting established artists side by side with emerging artists and even folks who don’t identify as artists.

We also periodically invite folks to enter our calls for work. These calls are open to everyone and culminate into group exhibits in our main gallery or inclusion into our newly implemented East Window Journal of Written and Visual Arts.

We also offer opportunities to our interns to curate readings, screenings or other events at the gallery.

Additionally, as people continue to learn about us, we’ve been receiving and considering curatorial proposals and exhibition requests from around the region and beyond.

Why are you passionate about East Window?

To a large extent, what happens at East Window has been motivated by my having children. I want my kids and other young people to see that we all have agency to shape the culture around us, to bring together the creative communities that we need in order to incite and sustain personal as well as social change.

The overarching response to the work that East Window is doing has been favorable; for that, I’m very grateful. But we’re constantly looking for ways to transform audience appreciation into concrete community involvement, encouraging our audience to reach a level of deep resolve and engagement with the narratives that artists presenting at the gallery are trying to advance.

What is a primary challenge that EW faces as a not-for-profit arts organization?

There are many ongoing challenges East Window faces as a non-commercial art gallery and cultural hub. One of which is to make every effort to implement a plan where every artist who exhibits, performs and curates at East Window receives some sort of honorarium for all of their hard work. I’ve made this effort a priority. This means in order for East Window to offer paid gigs to artists with any consistency, we are continuously in the process of fundraising and grant writing for the gallery.

How can the community support public programming in the arts at East Window?

An important way to support East Window is to become a member or make a tax-deductible donation. I know this can be off-putting to many folks who might not have the means to support us in that way. Nonetheless, contributions of any amount are vital to the sustainability of East Window’s efforts. 

Other great ways to engage with East Window are to show up in person for our events and opening receptions; let East Window and the artists showing there know what you’re thinking — let us know who you’d like to see exhibit or perform at the gallery; and of course, spread the word and tell your friends all about us!

The next major installation that is coming to East Window is YOUR REFUSAL TO SEE: A Native Guide Project by Anna Tsouhlarakis, an Indigenous Greek artist who works in sculpture, installation, video, and performance. Her work has been part of national and international exhibitions at venues such as the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, and the National Portrait Gallery. Inspired by Ralph Ellison’s novel “Invisible Man,” this exhibit deals with the artist’s venture of becoming a resident of Colorado. 

The opening reception for the Tsouhlarakis exhibit is Friday, November 1, 2024, from 7 to 9 p.m. at East Window, 4550 Broadway, Ste C-3B2 in Boulder.

The technology photographers used to capture the West

Early photographers carried heavy camera equipment over mountains in order to capture the American West on film. Now, photographers and everyday people have the ability to snap pictures of the landscape on their iPhones. While much of photography has changed over the past decades, photographers Kevin Hoth and Andrew Beckham gathered at the Longmont Museum to explain what has evolved and what remains the same in the event “From Film to Phone: Shooting the West”.

Hoth, a design and digital media studies professor at the University of Colorado Boulder, experiments with finding something new to add to the conversation of landscape photography each time he takes photos. As a snowboard bum in his 20s, his interest in photography began through his road trips out West. He started hiking with a mirror, propped it up on a rock, and began snapping away.

“I didn’t really know where it was going until I started to connect things that were in front of me with what was behind me,” Hoth said. This became one of his first large projects: “Everywhere And All At Once.”

“I love hiking, I love being in nature, I feel at peace there and I always felt this limitation with photography that’s like you can only get one singular vantage point,” he said. “When I’m out in these places … I can see and feel in 360 degrees, but I can’t take a picture of that, so for me, this was a way to try and get there.”

Hiking into the wilderness with a mirror, one he frequently broke, is oddly reminiscent of the early days of wilderness photography, hiking to remote locations with fragile equipment. 

“They had to bring all of this equipment out with them into the wilderness,” said Jared Thompson, curator of exhibits at the Longmont Museum. “They had to bring a portable dark room, they had to bring these giant cameras, tripods, and then all of the chemicals to develop them on site”.

Referring to the “Picturing the West” exhibit that inspired this conversation between modern photographers of the American West, Thompson explained the importance of photography on people’s outlooks on wilderness throughout time.

“A lot of these photos influenced public perception, so a lot of these images actually shaped the views on the landscape and led to conservation efforts,” he said.

The essence of a landscape

This idea of capturing the essence of a landscape, bringing the viewer closer to the wilderness is shared in Andrew Beckham’s photography. He captures many of his photographs while mountaineering, returning to his studio to enhance the images using tools from the landscape itself.

Recently, he collected mica, an iridescent mineral, from the mountains and ground it up into a powder that could be applied back onto his photographs. In this way, he physically brings the landscape to the viewer.

This nature of impacting an original image to integrate ideas and evoke emotions from the audience is what seems to make Hoth and Beckham’s work stand apart from their predecessors in Western photography.

But, while they do attempt to center the viewer’s experience in their art, Hoth admited that sometimes it feels impossible or wrong to capture natural beauty directly. He told a story of photographing the Grand Canyon and the feeling that it was offensive to take a picture of it straight on.

“So I was at a warming hut, and I saw these feathers kind of hanging in the window, and the Canyon was behind the window and I focused on the feathers and the Canyon was soft,” he said. “You don’t get to see the Canyon sharp, you have to be there and experience it”.

In this way, his altered photographs, through a mirror, and more recently through burning or cutting film as it develops, tell a different story about the landscape. One that does not even attempt to recreate the exact landscape itself.

The two artists concluded by explaining they don’t think augmented reality is threatening their role as photographers, just changing it. Beckham told the story of a climb he did during a storm in which electricity was arching between ice axes.

He was taking photos when this event occurred and when he later downloaded the photos he took that day, there was a set of lines dancing through one of the images.

“That electrical current was not only passing between the climbing tools, but it was passing right through my camera as I was making the image,” Beckham said. “What does it mean to capture and experience even if you don’t know that you are capturing it at the time?”.

Adding multiple dimensions to photos, increasing accessibility, and multiplying the senses reached by a traditionally visual medium, Hoth and Beckham are learning to work with the new tools available to them as they continue to create.

As technology changes, so does art. From the first photographers of the West, who carried equipment across mountains, to today’s artists who snap photos on their cell phones and enhance their shots with new technologies after, it seems that photos of the West have always and will continue to represent their time.

Close Friends Collective, Breck Create tell meaningful stories of queer love across the centuries

Like all lonely singles, I dread Valentine’s Day. But despite my profoundly unsuccessful love life, I remain a romantic. And so, naturally, I was drawn to the Gay Love Letters and Artist Talk at the Old Masonic Hall this February 14, 2024. It was the first of its kind in Breckenridge, though the Close Friends Collective, who collaborated with Breck Create to make the event happen, has hosted several — with different content — in New York City, where they’re based.

The event was a celebration, remembrance, and proclamation of gay love. Artists and community members came together to share queer writings made up of both poetry and prose, dating as far back as the eleventh century. Though thankful to be able to read and access such potent stories and affirmations of gay love, the speakers pointed out how a considerable amount of queer history is lost to us because of historical homophobia, persecution, and oppression.

Until 1973, homosexuality was listed as a mental illness in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. To this day, same-sex marriage is only legal in 36 of 195 countries worldwide.

And so, in addition to commemorating gay love, this event served as a much-needed platform to share these marginalized voices and experiences that are so often overlooked.

Two artists, Janie Stamm and Ben Cuevas, opened the night as they talked about their art, which decorated the walls of the space, and its relationship to queerness. They referenced pieces around the room as the audience took it in and asked questions about their experience and the art itself.

After, the Gay Love Letters reading began.

The speakers read the stories and scripts in turns and created a dramatized flare that carried on all night. They first delved into letters by the famous poet Emily Dickinson, written to her editor, muse, and lover, Susan Gilbert. Dickinson’s enigmatic, reclusive poet stereotype persists because historians erased Susan’s name from much of these writings. There’s a book, “Open Me Carefully,” that properly portrays their relationship, as these letters and poems appear uncensored, in their original form.

Next came selected excerpts from Bram Stoker’s remarkably long love letter to Walt Whitman, and then the speakers focused on RFD magazine. The reader-written quarterly has been around since 1974, a time when gay sex was illegal in nearly every state. The magazine was designed specifically for gay folks in rural areas to foster a sense of community and understanding that they are not singular in their struggles. The magazine still publishes today.

Events like this are a welcome reminder to question what we’re told and to consider other truths. Readers spoke about Barbara Cameron and Linda Boyd, for instance, who were two women in love. But when Barbara died, her obituary read that she was survived by her “special friend, Linda Boyd”. History is, unfortunately, written by the victors, and they’ll censor it how they please. We must hold space for real queer histories and actively legitimize queer experiences if we are ever to realize progress.

Chanukah means Dedication
Chanukah is not mentioned in Jewish scripture; the story is related in the book of the Maccabees. The First and Second Books of Maccabees contain the most detailed accounts of the battles of Judah Maccabee and his brothers for the liberation of Judea from foreign domination. These books include within them the earliest references to the story of Chanukah and the rededication of the Temple.

Lighting the Candles 
The only religious observance related to the holiday is the lighting of candles. The candles are arranged in a candelabrum called a Hanukkiah. Some have the custom to light a Hanukkiah for each person in the family. Since most candles burn for 30-60 minutes, we often light the Hanukkiah in the home, so we can enjoy the glow of the lights and stay close for fire safety. 

Each night, another candle is added from right to left (like the Hebrew language). Candles are lit from left to right because you pay honor to the newer thing first.

One of the best parts about Chanukah is arguably the fried food, especially the latkes! Emblematic of the olive oil that miraculously lasted eight days, latkes are a delicious way to tell the story of this eight-night holiday.

Historian and rabbi Gil Marks explained, “We’re not exactly sure what foods were traditionally made prior to the 14th century, when two types of Hanukkah foods emerged on the record, dairy foods and fried foods.”

Sephardic Jews made many variations of fried sweets for the holiday, while Ashkenazi Jews in Northern Europe made fried blintzes and donuts. Italian Jews in the 15th century made fried ricotta cheese pancakes (“cassola”) which were arguably the first “latkes.”

A dreidel (sevivon in Hebrew) is a spinning top, with four sides, each side featuring a different Hebrew letter: nun (?), gimmel (?), hay (?) and either shin (??) or peh (??).

The game of dreidel is often explained with a legend that, during the time of the Maccabees, when Jewish children were forbidden from studying Torah, they would defy the decree and study anyway. When a Greek official would come close they would put away their books and take out spinning tops, claiming they were just playing games.

Menorah or Hanukkiah
Many people refer to the Hanukkiah as a menorah. The name menorah is used only to describe the seven-branched candelabrum that was housed in the Jewish Temple. The Hanukkiah holds nine candles: one for each night, plus a shamash (servant) at a different height.

DENVER — On a recent Thursday night at Dazzle, guests filled the chairs while servers skillfully weaved through aisles between songs, skirting their way around composer Chie Imaizumi who was conducting her “Little Big Band” from the floor in front of the stage, just feet from the audience.

“Gift of Jazz Presents: Chie Imaizumi Little Big Band feat. Randy Brecker and Greg Gisbert,” was part of an exclusive two-night concert series at Dazzle Denver’s new location in the Denver Performing Arts Complex.

The series was a collaboration between jazz artists who have experienced challenges with mental wellness. The artists aimed to bring the conversation of mental wellness to center stage, creating a sense of unity and belonging for all involved — including the audience.

A trumpet solo stunned the audience, and Imaizumi grinned and clapped along with them. Her reaction was not only that of a proud composer, but one of a lifetime fan.

The trumpet player was none other than Randy Brecker of the jazz fusion band “Brecker Brothers,” as well as one of the original members of Blood, Sweat and Tears.

Imaizumi was first introduced to Brecker’s work as a preteen studying music in Japan. According to her, most of the lessons were focused on classical and Japanese pop, until a teacher encouraged her to continue her studies in Tokyo. There, her teacher took her to a concert in a giant, brightly lit concert hall booming with music. Imaizumi recalls telling her teacher, “I don’t understand what’s going on on-stage, but I want to do something like that.”

“Now I’m here having him, my star, playing my music,” Imaizumi shared, smiling at Brecker. “And that’s a dream come true.”

Full-circle moments like this one are far from a rarity at Dazzle Denver. One could even say that venue owner Donald Rossa orchestrates them.

Thanks to a vast network grown from authentic connections and a healthy dose of vulnerability, connections that develop at Dazzle go much deeper than musical collaborations. In many ways, it creates a community that supports one another in the journey of mental wellness.

The event was an excellent example of this. Rossa reached out to friend and collaborator Greg Gisbert to fulfill the first residency at Dazzle’s new location. This event was one of many Gisbert helped piece together, this time with the theme of mental wellness.

The group was curated not only for their talents, but because of their unique bond. Rossa had supported the career paths of Imaizumi and Gisbert however he could, and Gisbert had inspired Imaizumi to try a collaboration with him in a project that, with Rossa’s help, landed them on Capri records.

Even presenters The Gift of Jazz had personal investment in these relationships, as they had partnered with Dazzle to help keep Imaizumi in the U.S. to finish her studies.

Here, lifetime friendships were born. One close enough that, while in crisis, they knew they could reach out to one another to feel less alone — all thanks to music.

“I wish the world and world governments could operate more like a jazz group,” said Gisbert. “We have so much love to give and share, and we want to share it with the world.”

Rossa shared this sentiment, stating, “We all come from music and we met through music, but we share a common bond after that. And is mental health and mental wellness. That is our own personal struggles, that is struggles within our community. It’s kind of our support mechanism that we can rely upon each other, but also try to invite other people into our circle.”

The shared intent to invite audience members into the circle of healing these friends had cultivated was clear. Imaizumi composed the lineup of songs so that they align with the stages of a mental breakdown and the recovery that follows.

In the first piece of the series, entitled “Adversity,” the music begins with a dark and lonely bass solo. Imaizumi said this was meant to depict the feeling one gets when they simply can’t get the energy to wake up in the morning and face the day. From there, the songs bring the audience on a journey to hope and healing.

“It’s okay not to be okay all the time,” Imaizumi said about the piece’s message. “It’s music that everyone can relate to. I think everyone has different stories to tell, but they can relate to those dark places, traces of pain.”

The performers were just as impacted by the audience as the audience was by the music. “I saw the audience felt that as well, so it was such a beautiful moment,” Imaizumi continued. “I saw color change in the whole room.”

Needless to say, audience feedback aligned with Imaizumi’s intuition. “Some women came up to me in tears,” reflected Imaizumi, “And they’re like, ‘I didn’t know you until today, and I don’t know why, but I keep crying.’ I said, ‘I’m glad that happened for you.’”

Once again, music united once-strangers in a way that only music can. Take it from Randy Brecker himself, who concluded “Music is really the great unifier of the world.”

The annual Dory Hill Pinball Campout (elevation 9230’) merges an elite tournament with al fresco revelry and reverence for the silver ball.

Dave Johnson, a lead volunteer at Colorado’s largest pinball tournament, addressed an eager and shivering crowd in the Dory Hill Campground open-air pavilion at the post-tournament awards. Glancing around, he realized something was missing. “Snow! Snow!… We want Snow!”

Noting the loud downpour a few feet away and the late-summer temperature dropping through the 40s, Johnson backtracked slightly. “No, we don’t want actual snow,” he added as tournament director Snow Galvin stepped up to spirited applause for her efforts in breathing life into perhaps the world’s most improbable pinball tournament.
Actual snow would not be an unusual occurrence at the Dory Hill Pinball Campout. The tournament/retreat, run by Galvin and event director Deanna Scalf, marked its 13th (mostly) annual occurrence on September 8-10 with 140 competitors, who brought along family members and dogs to the bucolic, Aspen-studded campground site 20 miles west of Golden at 9,230 feet in elevation.

The players included cardiologists, clinical therapists, cops, and craftspeople. Representatives of all those professions described the Dory Hill experience with a hushed reverence. Many players hauled up their own pinball machines — 57 this year, weighing 250-350 pounds each — strapped to flatbeds and lashed inside trailers. The event sold out as quickly as tickets for Taylor Swift’s 2023 Denver concerts, though in fairness Taylor moved 150,000 more tickets.

“The one unique thing to say about it,” said Russell Linsky, the cardiologist, “is that if you ask, and people know about it, it’s everyone’s favorite tournament.”

Competitors played at least 27 tournament games across two days. Before and after tournament games, they wandered the campground and sampled pinball games manufactured across seven decades. No quarters necessary, except for the showers — two quarters for three minutes.

At night, the games glowed like beacons on concrete pads and planked porches, decked out in décor that matched the themes of the machines. Even past midnight, players stumbled on tree stumps, tripped over tarp tiedowns, and ambled around campfires to get one more play in on a rarely seen game.

“You can think of it as one of the major competitive events of the year, because it is,” Linsky said.
Lyons Pinball Owner Ryan Wanger chimed in. “Or you get people who are like, ‘I didn’t even realize how competitive it is. I’m just going to get high in the mountains, and look at these sparkly lights inside these well-decorated cabins, and have a great time.’”

Finding pinball in the wild is, well, wild, since just 50 years ago, you couldn’t play publicly in New York City. The game was banned as an illicit “game of chance.” But don’t try telling a true player that pinball looks like luck. They’ll be happy to explain that a good game demands a toolkit full of flipper skills, quick-twitch reactions, nuanced nudging, encyclopedic rule knowledge, and snap physics and geometry assessments—and, maybe, a bit of luck.

Pinball has seen a recent renaissance, with sanctioned tournaments growing fivefold in the last decade. Colorado is at the leading edge. Two of the world’s top three players and four of its top 40 live in the Denver metro area. #1-ranked Escher Lefkoff of Longmont and #3-ranked Zach McCarthy of Conifer missed Dory Hill in 2023, though they both played in 2021. You’ll find a place to play within a few miles of nearly anywhere on the Front Range, especially if you have the Pinball Map app that catalogs 9,000+ public venues for pinball.

Dory Hill participant Emily Unruh had never played pinball, even as a kid, until her husband, Ross, told her one day that a pinball machine was being delivered to their house. “So I was like, ‘I guess I’ll try it,’” she said. “Then, obviously at some point, things metastasize with pinball machines.” As COVID began, they got a second machine. Now, they have “38 or 39 machines,” she said. A month after hosting a large tournament at their house, they brought a rare James Bond-themed game from their collection to Dory Hill.

One distinctive Dory Hill feature is its “Pin Golf” format. The highest score doesn’t matter. Players must achieve a target objective through numerous well-sequenced shots. For example, in Elvira: House of Horrors, players had to start “Junk in the Trunk Multiball,” by hitting each “36-24-36 target,” then shooting the ball up the left ramp, then repeating both tasks.

Here, it’s important to note that while some pinball themes remain rooted in sexist male fantasy, the Colorado and Dory Hill scenes are diverse and welcoming for all genders. Dory Hill’s 2023 event was led by two women, both highly ranked tournament players, and a Denver Belles & Chimes league draws strong participation. Keri Wing, who placed 6th at this year’s Dory Hill, has ranked in the top 35 in the world.

Marshall Weasel first learned of Dory Hill “because everyone has swag. Everyone’s wearing the sweatshirts and the t-shirts when you’re playing people out in the scene. And then I started asking around. I think if you know about it, you know about it.”

Highly competitive pinball tournaments with top-ranked players can generate an intense vibe, but Dory Hill brings out intensity without acrimony. “It’s a laid-back environment, but people give a shit,” said Marshall Weasel. “Sometimes, when you get these types of players together, there’s gonna be a little scuffling. But everyone here is being respectable.”

Reflecting the vibe of community support, a side tournament at this year’s Dory Hill honored fundraiser Dean Grover, a Colorado pinball designer who passed away last year. It raised over $700 for organ transplant research. The tournament was held on a Safecracker pinball machine originally designed by Grover: the machine rewards great play by spitting out a physical token at you that rolls down the game glass for you to keep. When I first experienced this startling feature one Dory Hill evening, and a token rolled down at me — custom-minted for the tournament with Grover’s initials — it felt like the heavens had bestowed upon me a special gift.

“It’s a unique event,” said Safecracker mini-tournament Kevin Ryan about Dory Hill, “and it’s really human.” Ryan was present for Dory Hill’s origins 15 years ago, when a small collective of indie filmmakers — blending hobbies of snowboarding and pinball — went camping, mounted pinball games on two-by-fours, and connected them to a gas generator so they could play in the wild.

Today’s Dory Hill is organized a bit more conventionally, and some long-timers fear that the vibe might be ruined if it grows any more — or if more word gets out about it. “Are you sure you wanna do that?” Wanger chided when I suggested I was writing about Dory Hill. I told him not to worry, as no one would read it anyway.

This trepidation is driven by Dory Hill’s unicorn status in the pinball landscape. While a few events share a few attributes, none come close to Dory Hill’s idiosyncratic setting, which can lead to cliffhanger logistics. “Power’s always a challenge,” said Scalf, the event director. “Snow (Galvin) is a mastermind on these logistics. She knows that if you have a magnet, or iridescent bulbs, it can trip a circuit.”

The power in the pavilion had tripped early on Sunday, forcing more than 30 players to restart tournament matches. But it held firm later that afternoon as the Dory Hill championship came down to a game between Kevin McCarthy, of Conifer, and Wanger. Watching from 15 feet away, I could barely hear the game sounds over the roar of rain blowing in through the sides of the loosely tarped pavilion.

The victory went to McCarthy, and scores of satisfied camper/competitors packed up their tents and games to trek back downhill late Sunday afternoon. McCarthy may have driven a bit faster than most. He was due to direct another major tournament, at his Blizzard Mountain Pinball arcade in Conifer, just two hours later.

Can’t get enough professional sports teams in Colorado? Good. The National Cycling League has you covered. It’s bringing an exciting, free professional bicycle race to the Front Range next month.

The NCL Cup, a series, is in its first year, and composed of 10 cycling teams composed of men and women — including the league-leading Denver Disruptors. They compete in three races across the country for one NCL Cup champion to be crowned this fall. The first event in Miami in April rallied nearly 20,000 spectators. The league is hopeful for similar numbers as cyclists race a course around the Colorado Rapids’ soccer stadium at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City on Aug 13.

“It’s the world’s first majority-minority and female-owned sports league,” said Reed McCalvin, the vice president of teams and operations for the NCL. “The four founders, and then myself, a founder with a very little ‘f,’ basically wanted to help change the face of sports and equality in sports.”

The founders include successful executives, tech company veterans, NFL agents, lawyers, and more, with high-profile investors in professional sports, such as the NBA’s Bradley Beal and the NFL’s Jalen Ramsey and Derwin James.

They all have the same goal: to bring cycling to the next level on a new, even playing field. The races are not multi-day, grueling races with mountain passes somewhere along the way like the Tour de France and ones closer to home from years past, including the Colorado Classic and USA Pro Challenge.

The NCL is criterium-style racing, meaning they’re fast-paced as cyclists ride on a set race course, doing laps to gain points along the way. The women and men compete in different competition groups for the same team, so each side brings equal weight to the scoreboard.

A new, even playing field

And, the NCL is set up in a way that allows men and women on the teams chances to contribute to the score. Some teams, such as the Denver Disruptors, have a full team of both men and women. Other teams that do not have both women’s and men’s divisions may merge with another women’s/men’s team for the purposes of competing in the NCL Cup Series.

For example, the Goldman Sachs ETFS Racing women’s team and Texas Roadhouse Cycling Team men’s team combined, and they’re currently sitting in third place.

“The National Cycling League is setting a new standard for inclusivity in professional sports by championing diversity. I was drawn to the opportunity to impact and transform communities through our mission,” said CEO Andrea Pagnanelli. “With more than 50 million cyclists in the U.S., we have an opportunity to grow the passion and excitement for the sport of cycling among the next generation of fans.”

But perhaps the experience and cohesion of the Disrupters is what has them so ahead of the pack. Currently the team is in first place with a score of 139. The Miami Nights are in second sitting at 95.

“Everybody has a mother, daughter, girlfriend, cousin, niece, what have you, that wants to see them equally represented and paid well. Sport is the great equalizer. One of our underlying taglines is ‘Make bike racing look like America looks,’” McCalvin said.

There are nearly 30 different nations represented in the participating teams, and several of the riders are former Olympic and world-renowned athletes.

Why Denver?

After a year of diligent research, which included meeting advisors from a plethora of other professional sports leagues and studying cycling in America, Denver emerged as a prime candidate for an NCL hub not only to host a local team but to hold events in the future.

“Colorado is just a cycling state,” McCalvin said. “Denver makes it consistently in the top 10 cities. We had a 49-row wide Excel spreadsheet of different reasons, including socioeconomics, number of people that bike, what the city spends on infrastructure around bikes, all that stuff. Denver was in the top 10 in nearly every category.”

Noah Granigan is one of the Denver Disruptors, as has been a part of the Colorado cycling community since he attended CU Boulder in 2014, where he was a member of the college’s cycling team.

As a fourth-generation international-level cyclist, Granigan has cycling in his blood. He now lives in Superior and said Colorado is the perfect place for cyclists.

“Colorado is such a great place to be a cyclist in terms of training roads, weather, and the massive cycling community so I ended up just staying in the area after I graduated,” Granigan said. “Colorado has become my new home so it’s pretty cool to now be on a Denver-based team.

“Denver is such a strong cycling community because it’s simply a great place to be a cyclist,” Granigan added. “That’s why there are so many professional cyclists that come from or move to Colorado. The road cycling is world-class, and then you have such incredible mountain biking, gravel, bike parks, and bike friendly cities like Denver on top of that.”

The ‘Ford vs. Ferrari’ model

Just because Denver is a great hub for cycling doesn’t mean the team was guaranteed success. In fact, McCalvin said there was some experimenting in bringing together the NCL, and he followed a popular movie’s method for finding and creating the best teams.

“One of the things I came up with was this ‘Ford vs. Ferrari’ concept,” McCalvin said. “It started with a blank slate. So we have a Miami team that I made more ‘Ferrari’, where it was a bunch of existing criterium racers in America and some track racers. And with Denver, we went with more long endurance road racers and former Tour de France riders and some track racers as well. This was like our beta test for our first year. We’re just trying to see what works.”

So far, Ford is crushing Ferrari, and endurance-based riding is dominating.

“It didn’t take long for our team to really start to understand, read, and communicate with each other mid-race,” Granigan said. “With riders from all over the world, all with their own strengths and styles, we were quick to take all of that and create a really strong unit, which we demonstrated in the Miami Beach cup in the first race of the year.”

Development of the future

The experimentation is still ongoing, McCalvin said. The three events this year are all in different formats. The Miami event was held on Ocean Drive. The Denver event is held at a professional sports facility. The Atlanta event will be more private and VIP-based.

“We’re trying to figure out what the model is in relation to keeping it community-based and getting the local families and community involved. I want your aunt to go and have a good time. Not just you because you enjoy cycling,” McCalvin said.

But McCalvin knows the future of all sports is in broadcasting. The NCL events are all broadcast on the GCN+, the Global Cycling Network streaming service. It’s all about expanding the league’s reach and getting new fans invested and interested in the sport.

“We’re very excited about being at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park,” McCalvin said. “A big part of what we’re doing is development of the future. It’s one of our pillars. It’s the best thing in the community.”

At the Aug. 13 event, there will be free junior racing, free mountain bike crit racing for kids, and a community ride for fans of all ages.

In fact, everything involving the event is free: the parking, the tickets, the community-based activities involved, and watching the pro race. The only thing interested fans will need to purchase is food and souvenirs, unless they want VIP tickets, which can be purchased on www.nclracing.com.

“Now we’re the cycling team in Denver and Colorado, and that’s important to us,” McCalvin said. “I remember when the Mammoth first started, and I remember when the Rapids first started. It didn’t quite happen all at once. It started semi-small-ish, and it’s grown into a [significant] fanbase and community staple.”

What started as a way to give our school-aged children hope during the Pandemic has grown into a town tradition in just three years. PTO Directors Jessica Bergschneider and Tasia Foss came up with this wonderful idea to help families during the Pandemic. We sure are happy to see such a special celebration unique to our town grow in popularity.

Started by the Soaring Heights PTO in Erie, the Hope & Gratitude Project was a drive-through event due to Covid in 2021 and was received so well, they brought it back. This year well over 1,000 people attended. There were 6,000 luminaries stretching two blocks, each with its own special message hand-drawn by students.

This year had most of Erie’s elementary and middle schools participating, including Aspen Ridge Preparatory School, Black Rock, Erie Elementary, Erie Middle School, Highlands, Meadowlark, Red Hawk, and of course, Soaring Heights.

Downtown Restaurants and businesses supported by offering special discounts through the evening, and the Town of Erie helped with a grant.

Back in 1995, I started working at a paper in Boulder. I live in Erie, so my daily commute into the city was comprised of tuning into KGNU for the drive. I would listen to Democracy Now, BBC, How on Earth, John Lehndorff’s Nibbles program, and Brigett Mars would tell us about the herb life. It was a comfortable routine that made me feel like I was at home in the community. Like I belonged.

Beyond providing in-depth news stories that the mainstream media often misses, KGNU hosts programming that impacts our communities for the greater good. From Hemispheres to Indian Voices and the Labor Exchange, KGNU provides airtime for essential members of our society that are often overlooked in the bigger picture of the news cycles. Music programming is equally important as the volunteer DJs pick the music ranging from eclectic to bluegrass. 

I still recall hearing “Volunteer-Powered” on that drive, and today, 28 years later, KGNU is still Volunteer-Powered, non-commercial, and 100% dependent on community support. Since March 22, 1978, Boulderites and beyond have supported KGNU. 

Recently, they invited us to their annual Mardi Gras fundraiser, which in addition to being a total blast, was also a reflection of the people that made Boulder cool for the last 45 years. No venture capitalists, just everyday people who care about the environment, justice, and equality. 

While the event is over, fundraising is not. As a commercial-free community resource, they will always need our support, which we are happy to give it, in exchange for 28 years of listening power.

Hey Nathaniel Rateliff,

I did not mean to omit,

The words expected of me to write,

after seeing you almost a year ago tonight.

I am really sorry it’s taken me so long,

to get around to writing about the good time,

I had hearing your songs so sublime.

Even tho the concert had me inspired,

I was dealing with the Marshall Fire,

when I was supposed to write my review,

that I owed for getting to see you.

The fire came, all while trying to recover,

from the Pandemic that caused the world to suffer.

Our Community,

Needs our Unity,

We need a lotta healing, 

Because many of us are feeling

the setbacks are maddening,

with all that is happening.

So let us extend our comity,

for music that reminds us of our humanity.

All that to say,

we love what you play,

new or old,

You help us feel whole.

A year ago, we got to see the fantastical Nathaniel Rateliff & the Nightsweats down in the Rino District at the Mission Ballroom a month after his latest chart-topping album, The Future, was released. It was our first time visiting The Mission, and what a first concert to see: Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats, one month after debuting his newest album.

Blown away by the music and performance, we had every intention of writing the very best music review we have ever done. But then, a few days later, tragedy struck, and our community was devastated by 1,000 homes being burnt to the ground. We were a week away from heading to the printer with the next edition, forcing us to stop everything and change half the content that had been worked on for months. The following is what we produced in that week:

For the last year, every time we heard The Future (or frankly, any Nathaniel Rateliff & The Nightsweats song), a pang of creeping guilt and shame would overtake us. Damn it, that review was still not written.

Instead of trying to write up something about the nuances of the notes, we settled on this poem. We hope you like it, Nathaniel.

Anyone reading this doesn’t need us to tell them to go download the new album. You probably already have — seeing that it has been #2 on the charts.

The “big” music reviewers are calling The Future’ retro, but all we know is it moves our soul just as he has done with each and every album before it. So while this review is late to the game, it’s important to know that the music helped lift us up through this difficult year. But that’s the way their music is, it makes you feel alive even through the pain of life. 

Nathaniel Rateliff and the Nightsweats have two shows coming up here in Colorado; Dec. 10th, 2022 at the Belly Up in Aspen, and Dec. 16th, 2022, at the Ball Arena.

On July 9, over 400 people gathered at Luvin Arms Sanctuary in Erie for the first Luvin Arms Compassion Carnival. I went, because I love the Sanctuary and an old fashioned carnival sounded great. It was. Folks ate yummy vegan food, played on rides, listened to music, and visited the barns to pet the animals. Favorite among the variety of creatures was Tito. He was born to a dairy farm, and being a male he was discarded on a trash pile. He came to the Sanctuary at 10 weeks old and was raised entirely by the kind hands of human caretakers.Now he is a really, really big cow with soulful eyes that look lovingly at anyone in his vicinity. He is a handsome guy. Tito loves attention and was laying down so the little ones could touch him all through the carnival..

I was anxious to see Devi and Mimi, a mommy cow and her baby. They came to Luvin Arms during the holiday season – a mother and child looking for a manger. They had physical problems when they arrived, but were looking happy and healthy on Carnival Day.

I visited Frankie and Arnie, two piglets who literally walked down the driveway by themselves to become part of the Luvin Arms family. There is something about the Sanctuary that is indescribable. You can feel the kindness. You can breathe in compassion. It has been described as a little piece of paradise. I’m sure Frankie and Arnie were drawn there by some intangible force that told them “here is safety”. 

Shartrina White, the CEO, told me they are planning another Carnival next year, while she was showing me around about a week later. I was privileged to get a private tour, which was videotaped by John Burdon, a cinematographer and volunteer there. Learning the stories of the residents is fascinating. Each one has taken a unique path to the Sanctuary.

Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally when masses of Americans come out of their winter shells and start stretching toward the sun and other activities to get their blood pumping. This year, we are “especially hungry,” in the words of Erin Barnes of Meow Wolf, to experience something more socially connecting than just a BBQ or hike. That’s why, as public relations manager, she scheduled their Danceportation PARTY PORTAL event over this long holiday weekend, and it was a hit. Over four floors, a rotating cadre of DJs pumped music into arenas of art that seemed designed for this endeavor. Partygoers danced, explored, laughed, talked, and breathed all throughout the different metaverses created inside that awkward-seeming white building sitting hunched between the freeways in downtown Denver.

Choosing to embark in social gatherings again like dance parties is a big decision after two and a half years of living with Covid. Meow Wolf has been especially cognizant of how COVID has shaped our world, since the Denver installation opened during 2021; they began their life at 65% capacity and have been sitting there since. The PARTY PORTAL series of events isn’t a stunt to try and up those numbers, though: all other Meow Wolf installations have raves once a quarter, and we’re well behind the curve because of COVID.

There is no pushing the envelope when it comes to safety. Every employee is tested every two weeks, and training for other potential risks is ongoing. Every employee recently underwent training to recognize when someone has been rufied or when someone may be attempting to roofi another. That sense of safety was very tangible among the partygoers throughout the night, a distinct difference from a regular club setting. Meow Wolf staff is also equipped with appropriate overdose countermeasures (such as Narcan or Naloxone) to assist in the rare case someone would need it. Security and other staff say drug use at Meow Wolf and their special events is rare, and the experience at Danceportation bears that out. Partygoers were all about immersing themselves in the pre-prepared psychedelic experience of the installation, elevated by the added art of the DJs. What a truly ecstatic communal experience, without the need for any additional stimulants. Although regularly placed carts provided alcohol, there were mocktails, coffee, and even MoonWater (it’s locally bottled Denver water).

The entirety of the art encompassing the visitor to Meow Wolf was enhanced exponentially by the talented performances of the DJs and the expert sound systems. The seamless joining of each area of the installation made Convergence Station transform into the living piece of art it truly is; the dancers in their exciting and artful club wear only heightened the entire experience. The respect and joy present in this environment was almost startling after such a long time apart from social outings. Six hours dancing and playing Disco Bingo at this event will fill your cup for a long time.

From the time we entered the installation to when we left, we were greeted with joyful beings tangibly excited to share this experience with us. Watching dancers break dance for the first time since we were in high school provided a nostalgia shot. The communal feeling of serenity and happiness as we traversed each area of each floor is definitely an experience worth repeating. The installation seemed to throb and bounce itself with the beat of the DJs and the heartbeats of the partygoers. The costumed docents were full of life and energy, their smiles and engagement almost contagious. We left feeling tired but uplifted, excited to share the next Danceportation event with friends and family.

Broomfield, CO – On Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., the Broomfield Veterans Museum will be hosting a free World War II Symposium at the Broomfield Auditorium; the event meant to honor Colorado’s veterans, and dive deep into the heritage, and visceral meaning of World War II.—The morning inside and out of the 6,800 Square foot auditorium will be jam-packed with people, some of which will be wearing World War II-era green uniforms fit with M1 Garands and green steel helmets: 1940-style military vehicles will be rolling in outside holding armaments and all the essential things folks used during World War II—everyone filled with great joy to commemorate this incredible scene. Meanwhile, there will be a multitude of historians and well know authors to attend: including Flint Whitlock, Gail Beaton, and David Barrett.  Some of the scheduled keynote speakers consist of Guyleen Castriotta, Mayor of Broomfield, and the United States Representative of Congress, Joe Neguse. Followed by a very special performance by “Rosie The Riveter” and “Mrs. Mamie Eisenhower” (women in World War II).

Erie, CO (June 13^th, 2022) – Being Better Neighbors, a local non-profit and community organization in partnership with the Town of Erie and its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Board, is proud to present the 2^nd Annual Juneteenth celebration on June 18^th, 2022 from 12pm-4pm. Juneteenth is the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States, and the newest federally-recognized national holiday.

This event will be held in historic downtown Erie, on Briggs St. The Juneteenth Celebration will include live entertainment, food trucks, a beer tent, vendors, kids’ activities, and more. The event is free to attend, so bring your friends and a water bottle, and take in the festivities!

The Juneteenth Celebration will feature musical and dance acts from DJ Digg, Mokomba Ensemble, Raw Groove, and Soul School. For a full schedule, please see our Facebook event or our website.

Being Better Neighbors is a non-profit organization established to embrace Erie’s growing diversity and to ensure we live in a welcoming and inclusive town. The organization began from a resident’s effort to host a march for racial justice in spring of 2020, which attracted 1000 residents from Erie and surrounding towns. Seeing the interest in racial justice and inclusion, the organizers of the march created Being Better Neighbors, which hosted the first annual Juneteenth celebration in Erie in 2021, shortly after Juneteenth was declared the newest national holiday. The organization hopes to continue hosting events and raising awareness for all of our diverse population.

Erie CO Being Better Neighbors Pride Day, June 5 2022

What a day! Erie turned out in a big way for the Inaugural Pride Celebration hosted by Being Better Neighbors, on June 5th with approximately 3,000 – 3,500 people estimated to be in attendance throughout the event.

No one really officially counted, but it was clear by the ongoing large crowd throughout the day, that the community was ready to welcome everyone.

The entertainment lived up to the day as well with professional and fun-filled artists ready to make us smile and dance including the joyous performances by:

There were even some elected officials in the crowd including State Senator Sonya Jaquez Lewis and Louisville Mayor (and Boulder County Commissioner candidate) Ashley Stolzmann.

In spite of a couple of letters to the Board of Trustees, (mostly citing Tucker Carlson), the event went off without a hitch. While Parasol Patrol was ready to wave with their colorful umbrellas – for those who might choose hate over love – the “noise” remained mostly online. Only love was visible through this day.

On Feb. 23, BIPOC artists and Boulder County Arts Organizations are invited to join our kick-off event at the Dairy Arts Center, featuring Creative Nations. This event is free to attend. RSVP at Boulder County Arts. Founding members will share their current experiences and future plans for Boulder’s first collective and permanent onsite establishment of Indigenous Artists.

The event will start at 5:30 p.m. with an informal happy hour. At 6 p.m. the featured artists will present, followed by conversation and the opportunity to enjoy the NAACP’s Walk With Me, a selection of Civil Rights Era photographs from the Ernest C. Withers Collection. We will also share plans and get feedback for developing a Boulder County BIPOC artist directory.

Connect is a series for performance, networking, and dialogue among BIPOC artists and local arts organizations. The series is co-organized by the Antiracism Action in the Arts Initiative. The initiative was launched in 2020 as a study group composed of representatives from local arts organizations, including Boulder County Arts Alliance, Dairy Arts Center, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art, Jewish Community Center, KGNU, the Longmont Museum, the CU Boulder Office for Outreach and Engagement, CU Theatre and Dance, CU Art Museum and the B2 Center.

Collectively, the initiative seeks to promote diversity, equity, access, inclusion and fundamental change within historically white arts institutions in Boulder County.

Bike to Work Day is an annual event organized by Way to Go, a program of the Denver Regional Council of Governments, in partnership with seven regional transportation management associations. Each Bike to Work Day, commuters in the Denver region are encouraged to bike to work to save money during their commutes, improve their health and lower stress levels — all while reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality.

Way to Go also celebrates Winter Bike to Work Day, an annual tradition for seasoned cyclists.

Longmont, CO: Good Life Refuge farm animal sanctuary today announced the beginning of a monthly open house series starting January 29th, 2022. Open houses are a great opportunity for the public to connect with the farm animal residents, and to learn about their stories, how to care for them and to experience their unique personalities, and to establish a relationship with volunteers and staff while also supporting your local non-profit.

“The last two years have been tremendously difficult to establish and hold a connection with our community because of the Covid-19 pandemic.” said executive director Nicole Brecht. “We are very excited to have the public come back out to the sanctuary and meet all of our new and old residents and connect with them on a personal level.”

Pezzullo will interview known advocate Mia Ives-Rublee about her expertise in disability justice with environmental organizations, institutions, and broader coalitions – including outdoor recreation access, being a competitive athlete, and on plastic ban advocacy, as well as the value of public protest and voting.

Mia Ives-Rublee is the director for the Disability Justice Initiative at American Progress. Ives-Rublee holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a master’s degree in social work from UNC Chapel Hill. She is a leader in disability justice and inclusion, working with nonprofit organizations and businesses, such as: Women’s March, Families Belong Together, DC Action Lab, Adoptees for Justice, Fair Fight, People’s Collective for Justice and Liberation, Lonely Whale, and more. Best known for founding the Women’s March Disability Caucus, Ives-Rublee helped organize the original Women’s March on Washington in 2017, pushing for better access to disability accommodations at progressive events and more policy platforms inclusive of the disability community.

Ives-Rublee was named by Glamour magazine as one of 2017’s Women of the Year Award. She was also recognized by She the People as one of 20 Women of Color in Politics to Watch in 2020. As a North Carolina community regional organizing director for the Elizabeth Warren Campaign for President, she communicated policies and organized events around specific issues affecting the disability and Asian American communities. Ives-Rublee worked as the field director for Down Home NC to encourage rural residents to vote. She also worked with the Asian American Advocacy Fund and the Georgia Disability Vote Partnership to help elect Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) and the Rev. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) during the 2021 election.

The Longmont Museum officially announced their winter season with the release of their Winter 2022 Program Catalog and Newsletter. The Museum will host dozens of programs for both children and adults now through early May as part of this season. Highlights of the season include:

Join the Boulder Symphony for a reimagined look at Stravinsky’s Soldier’s Tale narrated by poet, Dominique Christina, the story of a soldier who trades his violin to a shadowy figure in return for wealth beyond belief.
This fundraising concert will also feature violinist, Gregory Walker, who lost his home in the Marshall Fire. He will be performing the Theme from Schindler’s List and Meditation from Thais. Let’s come together to hear monologues about how two men, Brandon Wainright and Juaquin Mobley, were impacted by the criminal legal system while in high school and reflect as a community. This performance is intended for middle school-age kids to old and wise adults.

The keynote speaker will be Rosalind Withers, current director of the Museum. The exhibit will run through February, which is Black History Month. This event encompasses the Five Pillars: of Celebration, Tribute, Education, Solidarity, Service.

The ongoing February display and related closing ceremony is organized by the NAACP Boulder County Executive Committee for African American Cultural Events.

7 PM: Undoing the Noble Crusade Documentary Screening

Undoing the Noble Crusade is based on a passage from “Why We Can’t Wait” a book by Martin Luther King, Jr. He wrote in 1963, “We are perhaps the only nation which tried as a matter of national policy to wipe out its indigenous population. Moreover, we elevated that tragic experience into a noble crusade.” The short film also commemorates the 50th anniversary of the Native American Rights Fund that was established in the spirit of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The second documentary to screen is “Beyond Sand Creek” about the efforts of the Arapaho tribe to undo stereotypes, renew their language and culture and tie those to their traditional homeland in Boulder.

Dr. King is renowned for his passion, wisdom, strategic brilliance, and commitment to Non-Violence. He taught that Non-Violent resistance is effective, but not easy. It requires us to exercise our inner-strength and resolve but can potentially be the most powerful way to grow movements, win hearts and minds to our causes and create the changes that we want to see in the world. Non-Violent resistance also poses unique challenges and risks that require our understanding, as well as practical skills and strategies for addressing them. Experienced Non-Violent Direct Action (NVDA) trainers Razz Gormley & Devon Reynolds will explore why NVDA is effective and share the foundational skills of de-escalation, riot response preparedness, forming affinity groups, informed consent culture, and more, that are critical for mitigating risk and remaining non-violent in today’s world.

The email I got started off with all the hype I needed to get into the swing of things (pun intended). “It’s the most wonderful time of year, when community-owned Adventure Golf and Raceway transforms to Holiday Lights Mini Golf!”

Yup. We’re in. The youngins are in. The slightly drunk college kids are in. The holiday light and Tiki god enthusiasts… We’re all in. There are at least three other people I know organizing party bus tours to go check out Christmas lights and then go to Krampus at the 13th Floor or throw an ugly sweater party and, if anybody reads this and is moved by the spirit, be headed to Adventure Golf and Raceway for Holiday lights mini golf. 

I haven’t played mini-golf in a decade or so. I know, shame on me. I grew up doing a lot of golfing, including living above a golf course at one point, in Corona, California. The opportunity to take a friend and her son and take some pictures was more than I could bear. I could not resist. And we’re so glad we did it. 

This is “a fantastical journey through 54 holes of heavily themed miniature golf, with hundreds of thousands of twinkling, colorful lights, and beautifully decorated creative features on every hole. You’ll meet Woody, the giant talking tree; see an erupting volcano; and leap at the sound of a booming fireball when it blasts off the head of our very deep-voiced island temple god.”

As much as I enjoyed miniature golf, and as much as I enjoy it with a group, there’s something incredibly special about taking small child with you. People with families, people with young humans in your lives, people with nephews and nieces, it’s time to get out into the crisp evening air and have some fun. The absolute joy, the excitement, and the overwhelming happiness of sinking a ball as the lights twinkle around you is enough to give any Scrooge a change of heart. We highly recommend getting out to enjoy some  holiday light mini golfing before this is over.

BRINGING MUSIC BACK TO LIFE IN BOULDER OPERA’S FAMILY SHOW: L’ENFANT ET LES SORTILÈGES

Boulder Opera performs L’enfant et les sortilèges (Sung in French) in Boulder for ages 6 and up

Boulder, CO – Boulder Opera announces their Family Series performance of L’Enfant et les Sortilèges in December 2021. Boulder Opera brings the enchanting L’enfant et les sortilèges (The Child and the Spells: A Lyric Fantasy in Two Parts) by Ravel with stage direction by Dana Kinney, and music direction by Steven Aguiló-Arbues. A lazy child has been grounded. Ordered to stay in his bedroom until dinner time, he takes out his anger on the animals and objects around him. He knocks over a tea service, torments a squirrel and a cat, tears up the tapestry and then his books. Suddenly, as if by magic, these innocent victims come to life and decide to get their revenge. The Opera is one hour long, sung in French with English subtitles. Don’t miss the talented Boulder Opera singers who will turn this story into a display of magical and adventurous opera. Just one hour and followed by a Q&A with the cast. For ages 6 and up.

Mezzo-soprano Jenna Clark, who will be singing the title role in L’enfant (the Child), shares her excitement for Boulder Opera’s Family Series, “I am so excited to help bring Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges to life for both adults and children! It is such a fun & fantastical experience to be drawn into some of the most unique musical storytelling opera has to offer. Being only an hour long, this opera is totally accessible to all ages, providing an imaginary world where kids can react to all the funny characters alongside L’enfant, a small child who throws a tantrum and finds himself in a world of magical beings, while adults can enjoy the deeper meaning behind the music. I will be singing the role of L’enfant, or the child, in this production and I cannot wait to dig deep into the world of this little boy and his big emotions trying to make sense of the world around him.”

Stage director Dana Kinney adds, “I love bringing opera to new audiences, especially young children and their families! About the Boulder Opera Company

Founded in 2012 by Artistic Director/Executive Director Dianela Acosta, the Boulder Opera is immersed in its tenth season with a fresh, vibrant approach to the ancient art of Opera. With the intention of developing new audiences, Boulder Opera operatic interpretations are modern, eclectic and fun! The Boulder Opera is committed to making opera accessible, inspiring and engaging to the community. Our goal is to develop new audiences for this old art form, enrich the lives of our community, and provide opportunity to local musicians. Through our Family Series, we explore repertoire in reduced versions with a narrator and an ensemble orchestra. I’ve heard them called by a variety of names including “Los Mocosos”, “The Cochinos” and my favorite “Los Chicharrones”. The last one was used by a friend who knew their name yet enjoyed calling them by her favorite snack. Not many musicians are comfortable being called a “snotty-nosed kid”, yet mocos is Spanish for snot or booger. In the same way we refer to someone as a “snotty-nosed kid”, we would use the term mocoso. The last part of their name refers to a machete, known in Chicano culture as a long-bladed knife used for combat, hunting, or agricultural purposes. Combine these two terms together and you have the meaning of their band name, “snotty-nosed kids used for good”.

If you haven’t heard of them, get to know their name because they are showing up everywhere. Known for their energy and sense of humor, they have a regalo to bring people together and form a community. Unlike any other band in the Colorado music scene, they magically merge Latino, Indigenous, and Chicano cultures while also raising awareness on social issues. Their ability to bring attention to situations that matter to people of color, while also making people laugh and dance, is cosmic. The band is Los Mocochetes and they are right on time for what this world needs.

The band consists of Joser “Jozer” Guerrero (lead vocals and percussion), Joshua Abeyta (guitar, vocals, and horn), Jon Rubio (drums), Elias Garcia (guitar and vocals), Diego Florez (guitar, vocals, and percussion) and Eli Bass Montoya (bass). Watching them perform, it’s obvious they are familia. Their humility and respect for each other is sacred. When asked who in the band they would switch talents with, there was no hesitation to name Eli. A graduate of the School of Denver Arts, Eli is a multi-talented instrumentalist, known for not just his talent, but also for his involvement with the community. He often uses his personal social media to promote fundraisers and other artists.

Spend enough time with them and it’s easy to see they don’t just love what they do, they love they can do it together. “I think we recognize, if we don’t see each other and play music for too long, we feel bad. Even just coming into rehearsal helps us to get ourselves straight. It’s part of our self-care program,” shares Joshua. Eli confirms, “We’re definitely blessed. And we want to give it out for all of our ancestors and all of our elders. For all the bands that came before us here in the city, years before us. We’re always humbled and thankful for the people that came before, so we always try to honor and respect that.” A good example of how they give is their personal commitments to education. Joshua is a freelance educator for private, public, and non-profit settings, Diego is an educator and works with Birdseed Collective, and Jozer is known as a mentor working with youth through Su Teatro. 

Despite their busy schedules, they welcomed an opportunity to gather for an interview. Between the infectious laugh of Diego and Josh’s claim that the Chupacabra inspires him, it’s no mystery as to why so many people love this group. When asked what makes their group so unique, Joshua begins, “When you really speak to that wide lens of assimilation and the intentional destruction of our families, people think about it as being in the past, but families are being separated today. They’re actively still tearing us apart, whether it’s through direct family separation or influencing our communities to stay in poverty. This was an intentional choice on our parts, to create, to bring our family back together. We call each other brothers because we know that any one of us would get up at three in the morning and go pick someone up from the other side of the town if they needed to. That’s really powerful. When there’s so many cards stacked against us, and you have help, that is just amplified.”

Listed in “The Top 27 Best Shows We Saw This Year at UMS” by 303 Magazine, this talented group rocked the stage with their top songs and fan favorites. Brian Loma, a resident of Colorado who runs “Cut the Plastic EMS”, is a known activist and fan, “This year’s Underground Music Showcase, the singing and performing from the mainstage, was AMAZING. If there’s five people, 500 or 5,000 in the audience, they’re going to perform with the same energy and vibrancy for the five people, as they would if there were 5,000. To bring some light into all of the struggles, that stuck with me. Because of them and their music, I danced nonstop this year.”

Indigo Rocabado, a musician and previous student of Jozer, shares the importance of Indigenous people in the music industry. “For most of my life, I was in environments with kids that didn’t look like me. I had the cultural aspects like the foods, holidays, and famous people, but no point of reference for what that meant for me in the world. Then I found artists like the Mocochetes and everyone from their circle who gave me a historical understanding. I learned it’s necessary to be loud about your culture and something that I hope everyone in the struggle finds, because it’s so healing to your soul. Whatever release that is, for them to feel genuine and beautiful. To take up space in a world that they deserve and have been denied.”

The Mocochetes have no problem with taking up space. They have played venues all over including the Hi Dive, Raices Brewing Co., Roxy on Broadway, and Mercury Cafe Denver. They’ve also performed at the Westword Music Showcase, Sunnyside Music Festival, Cherry Creek Art Festival, Five Points Cinco de Mayo Celebration, Boulder Arts Outdoors, and Denver Does Denver. Elias shares, “Our music is for everybody, not just one race or one particular person in general. When we play shows, it lets people know that people of color are here in this city. We have a voice and we’re not going to be silenced. Every time we play, people come up to us after the show and share it was a new experience that opened their eyes. It lets them know, we’re here to stay and we’re not going anywhere.”

Diego confirms, “What was done to us was exclusion. To do that back, is using that colonizers tool against them, that isn’t healing. We’re talking about medicine. How we can bring everything back together as one. That is what is powerful about when we all come together. We’re all contributing in our own way to this one song, this one vision. It’s divine to be able to get six people in the same room, consistently for five years. We all want to be here. To manufacture something that they can feel, something ancient, more powerful, and connecting with their ancestors. Using the music within us, the rhythms of the earth, we express how we think. Once we start vibing, we are all that. We’re thankful for that opportunity, the Creator makes way for that. It’s not we who are giving the shows, it’s what the Creator’s giving.”

Indigo has experienced that connection, “They always make space for me. They’re not stingy with their shine. They don’t have that ego about them where they can’t share the spotlight. They see they have a platform and now it’s time to do the work of uplifting other people with it. It’s definitely different, you don’t see that a lot. I can honestly say, they’ve never made me aware of the fact that I was a woman, in the sense that I’ve always been given the space around them to speak. To contribute and to just be a part of their creative family.”

The band is also known for its generosity. During COVID, they gave a virtual performance in “For the Love of Locals”, a fundraiser to help struggling musicians. Even more impressive was their work with the Fort Collins Musicians Association. The group participated in a sit-down discussion focusing on mental health within the music scene. Jozer explains, “I think medicine, most of the time we think about some sort of pill or injection. We forget that you can heal in many different ways. Music and sound, in the vibrations that we put off, it’s scientifically proven, that is vibration therapy. It’s similar to the energy we send with the lyrics or harmonies we’re playing. Often that can be healing on its own. Every person takes it in their own way. When we’re on, we have that ability to really impact folks and that can be considered medicine.”

Steve Abeyta, who considers Jozer a mentor and father figure, shares, “I just love how deep their music is and how much they voice their opinions on so many different topics. They really care about not only themselves, but the community that they live in.” He shared his favorite memory of the band, “They were performing and started cleaning up. I asked them if they could perform a song for me, which is my favorite song by them. They actually said yes and got everybody back on the dance floor, dancing again!” He continues, “I think all of their songs are healing. They have a message to you. Some of their songs can be goofy and some of them can be very serious. It always comes out in a positive way though and makes you want to reflect, to become a better person and help the world.“

A long-time friend of the band is Ean T. Tafoya, a known advocate for human rights and the environment. Ean is also a Radio DJ, known as Mr. Denver on “Colorado Culture Connection” on KGNU. He often plays the Mocochetes, “The band is involved and shows up at community events. Showing up is so much of that work! They are building a community and they give me a chance to partner with them. At the UMS, they included photos of my trip to our homeland, of our culture, sacred sites, and sacred places.” The band is known for doing a land acknowledgment before their performances, which are usually done by Ean. He explains, “That’s something that they’ve consistently asked me to do. It’s not just acknowledging the people who were here before us, it is acknowledging the people who are here now. A way of making people hear us. It is a way to educate people, to connect the past with our present in hopes for a better future.“

Brian agrees, “These musicians have a history of telling the stories, transitioning painful histories to the knowledge and mindfulness of honor. We have this big fight right now in the United States over education and about telling the truth. It is telling the true history of humans and what we have the capacity to do toward our fellow humans. You know, there’s an old saying that history forgotten will be repeated. They are a band that speaks true history. It’s paramount we have these voices lifting up the scars of our past, so we can acknowledge them for what they are and move on in a way that doesn’t repeat.”

Elias believes everyone is their own storyteller, “We’re in a place in history where we’ve been resilient and refused to be eradicated. We can tell our own story. That’s what’s at the crux of what we’re saying, that people just want the agency to live their own good life. Part of that is keeping that cultura together, it’s what feeds us. We feed the culture, we preserve it, we’re caretakers and stewards of it. We are continuing that story that was attempted to be erased. A lot of it has been lost, but we’re refining those ways.”

Jozer says their approach to storytelling is intentional, “I always think about it. I tell my students this all the time, especially if they’re writing something. What is the goal of this poem? What is the goal of the song? I often think, what are we doing with our songs? We’re trying to find a way, because we’re not sugarcoating many things. We’re pretty blunt about some of it, but it’s in the delivery, right? It’s how we present it. Like this song about tacos. The song essentially is about why you want to consume our culture but you don’t want to accept our people? We present it in the recipe of my grandmother’s tacos. The message still gets out pretty clear. Most folks are able to digest that a little bit easier and not even realize they’re digesting it until they go home and think ‘Oh, maybe I was thinking about this in the wrong way?’ That’s what art is and that’s why it’s such an important vehicle.”

Considering their music to be medicine, they were asked if they see themselves as healers. Jon replied, “I’ve got called that a few times myself. People tell us it is a medicine and it does heal people. People want from the music, something they can relate to and have some sense of hope. Whatever people are going through, music is medicine, it has definitely helped me. When I was learning the songs it was very healing. I remember telling Josh, ‘Hey man, this music has healed me. The tough spot I was going through, it really is a medicine!” Music is not just art and art forms, it’s something beyond that, especially if you can reach one person. Then they reach 10 people and those 10 people reach 100 people and you build a community. It’s definitely a blessing to have that platform and to be able to do that. “

Elias adds, “Every single person on this planet has a connection to indigeneity. Every person comes from a culture that was living with and off the land. A culture that had different spiritual practices, hunting, and healing. Different ways of surviving within climates which their body’s adapted to. Culture ties us back to what makes us human. Everybody has culture, how your grandma cooked her soup, how your grandpa prepares their tea.”

“This is a revolution,” proclaims Jozer as he stands, ”I know there’s certain places and certain times where I go up there and it does feel uncomfortable to sing. That’s active evolution. Most importantly though, at the end of the day, it is our duty to continue this work. If you talk about how it used to be illegal for us to do this. Illegal for us to be who we are, then what are we doing if we’re not practicing that? If we’re not taking advantage of what our ancestors and those who came before us fought so hard to do? It doesn’t feel like an obligation, but in a positive way it is. It’s like this duty that our ancestors gave us. This is a talent that we’ve been given for a reason. We hope that it will inspire folks. We hope that impacts other people, in the same exact way that impacted me. We are the actual manifestations of our ancestors’ prayers. We are brought to do this, to be here, to do something positive in our lifetimes.”

The Mocochetes will be the first performance at the Perplexiplex Convergence Station for “La Posada IZCALLI” on December 11, 2021 at Meow Wolf Denver.

Out Boulder Country and Local Transgender Leaders to Commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance

BOULDER, CO – On Saturday, November 20, 2021, Out Boulder County, their Transgender Steering and Events Committee, and members of the Boulder County community will commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance. Transgender Day of Remembrance is an annual observance on November 20 that honors the memory of transgender people whose lives were lost in acts of anti-transgender violence.

Regarding the importance of Transgender Day of Remembrance, Elliot Lane, Chair of Out Boulder County’s Transgender Steering and Events Committee, said, “Transgender Day of Remembrance is one of those terrible, important days where we give ourselves permission to mourn our fallen siblings.” They went on to say, “This day is a chance for us to grieve when we normally allow ourselves so little time to reflect on the fragility of life and the dangers of being ourselves.”

The community will gather at the Boulder County Commissioners Building (1325 Pearl Street, Boulder) at 6:30PM on Saturday, November 20, for a ceremony that  will include performances by Stephanie Lujan, musician, and Silen Willington (spoken word poet). The following leaders in the local transgender community will also address attendees: LeeLee James, Ruby Lopez, and Bryn Long. At the conclusion of the ceremony attendees will do a silent candlelit walk to the Out Boulder County office backyard (1443 Spruce Street, Boulder) where the names of those we have lost will be recognized.

“Being able to gather together to remember our trans siblings who have been lost in the past year is something that I really value. Too often those that are lost in our community are disrespected in death – obituaries written by family may misgender or use a prior name. Transgender Day of Remembrance is a chance for them to be remembered as they were, their true names heard and respected,” said Niko Stone, Vice-chair of the Transgender Steering and Events Committee.

Out Boulder County offers robust social support services and programming for the transgender community and their allies. This includes social support groups, social gatherings, and pro-transgender advocacy efforts.

Boulder’s Wild Side Gets to Play at DV8 Distillery’s Kink Series

Let your dark side shine at the brand new DV8 Kink Series, bringing nights of deviant revelry and kinky delights & samplings to Boulder’s subculture.

Boulder, despite being a hub for creative culture, progressive thinking, and self-expression, hasn’t seen a space for the kink or BDSM to consistently gather, most kinksters heading to Denver to meet community needs. That’s why the team at DV8 Distillery, together with Crista Reid of Permission Productions and Mike Lato of The Zookeepers Entertainment, wanted to create something new.  Introducing the DV8 Kink Series, a new concept dance party hosted at DV8 Distillery, which just celebrated their eight year anniversary of producing high-quality craft vodka.

Each party in the DV8 Kink Series is designed to welcome in all the most unique and diverse folks of Boulder to explore kinky play, learn about consent, and celebrate in deviant revelry.  The next party will be the holiday themed “Knotty or Nice,” coming up on December 18th.

Guests are asked to read and understand a code of conduct before attending Kink Series events, and receive a walk through of consent information at the door.  Inside, they can plan to enjoy Kinky Tasting Booths led by experts in the local kink community while sipping your craft cocktail, and get down to curated beats on the dance floor.

Interactive Art Installation Presented by Award-Winning Production Team at Blazen Illuminations Unveils Eight New Scenes for Fall, Holiday Photo Opportunities

DENVER, Sept. 29, 2021 — Blazen Illuminations, a Colorado-based experiential creative services company, announced today its selfie museum at the Denver Pavilions, Earth Illuminated, has unveiled eight brand-new interactive scenes. With the new additions, Denver’s photo playground now boasts more than 45 photo-worthy interactive scenes showcasing our planet’s beauty from air, land, and sea in an immersive environment.

To celebrate the new additions, Earth Illuminated invites guests to Level Up their cosplay and fall photography with the launch of a brand-new series of Level Up Mini Photo Sessions and a unique promo code to visit the Denver attraction in October.

Earth Illuminated is an Instagram-friendly interactive art installation for all ages that graphically explores the beauty of life on Earth on every scale. The attraction spans 13,000 square feet and is divided into a series of colorfully themed sets that are designed for taking photos and videos featuring unique perspectives and interactive props. Eight brand-new scenes debuting for fall include:

• Mexican Floral Wall: Celebrating the artful beauty of all cultures, the team at Earth Illuminated find that the brilliant colors of the Mexican culture bring vibrancy, life, beauty and honor to nature and wanted that to be a part of how we Illuminate our Earth.

• Anime Floral Wall: Shattering the “real” with lighting and paper flowers, Anime brings story to life through art. Here you get to tell your story through your camera while surrounded by an altered reality.

• Buddha Mandala: Technology and natural wood carvings combine in this scene to honor the beauty of Tibet. Tibetan culture is full of earthy art forms with deep colors which carry blessings and peace.

• Underwater Sparkle Wall: Swim in an ocean of sparkles while surrounded by water lilies – because everyone needs a sparkle wall to take pictures with at some point.

• The Tiki Retreat: Transport to a tropical paradise to relax and take fun photos!

• The Magical Gazebo: Created to make every girl’s dream come true, Webb found joy bringing this scene to life with her daughters, Mercedes and Madeline, and they are thrilled to see others make memories with it.

• Fall Fantasy: The spirit of the season is brought to life in this art zone designed to allow guests to take magical photos with pixie dust and lanterns lighting the way.

• The Moss Wall: Moss is found in places of peace and rejuvenation. Guests are invited to take a moment to enjoy this serene piece of nature inside.

Earth Illuminated is a limited-run engagement that will be open to the public through 2021. The elements of the exhibit are designed, developed, and produced by the award-winning production team from Blazen Illuminations, a Loveland, Colo.-based business. As seen in their first exhibit launched at Denver Pavilions last year in partnership with Distortions Unlimited, Distortions Monster World, Blazen Productions’ experience in film, theater, music, and TV results in a high standard of excellence when it comes to set design and construction.

Earth Illuminated is located at 500 16th Street Mall in Suite 280 on the second floor above Distortions Monster World and next to Express. Tickets are on sale now online at earthilluminated.com.

Glam Rockers Announce Album Release Concert & Party 

Break out the big hair, the tight pants, and the unforgettable music of glam rock. It’s that 80’s sound, reimagined and reinvented  by the legendary Denver band, Love Stallion. A living ode to the glory days of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, the Rockers are at it again, releasing their new album “Hot To Trot” and announcing a new national tour.

On November 12th at the Oriental Theater,  it all kicks off with an album release party and concert. The band will perform their all original music from the forthcoming album “Hot To Trot.”  “We can’t wait to rip your eardrums new a**holes.” Says lead singer Aaron Hart.  “ Get ready to have multiple eargasms.”  Love Stallion will be joined on stage by opening acts Poison’D (tribute to Poison) & Fire And Ice (tribute to Pat Benatar).

“Hot To Trot” is the band’s sophomore album, a follow up to their first in 2018, produced by  Emmy Award Winner and Certified Gold Record producer, Steve Avedis.   From that moment, it’s been a ride as wild as their hair. Love Stallion went on to play The Fillmore Auditorium Denver,  a string of shows promoting their album, and capped it off  taking the stage at the  world famous Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Following, they played at the famous Whisky A Go Go in Los Angeles, and played their covid comeback show at Levitt Pavilion in June 2021.

Named “One Of the Top 8 Bands Owning Glam Metal,” by Ultimate Guitar, it’s always a night to remember (if you can) and the party is sure to be “Hot To Trot.”
