Widely revered as a defining figure in Jazz, Rollins left behind a monumental catalog that forever altered the landscape of this great American music.

To celebrate this titan’s enduring spirit, we are thrilled to feature the Peter Sommer Quartet to present this program. As an esteemed saxophonist and dedicated jazz educator, Peter Sommer brings a deep, lifelong connection to Rollins’ music. He and his quartet will lead a powerful exploration of Sonny’s iconic compositions, bringing to life that big, swinging groove he was known for.

In the enriching tradition of the Blind Tiger series, Peter will draw on his extensive expertise to share insightful historical context and personal reflections on Sonny’s life and monumental influence, offering a much deeper listening experience.

SONNY ROLLINS (1930-2026)

Often called “the greatest improviser in the history of Jazz,” Sonny Rollins (Harlem, NY) forged a completely unique jazz identity by combining a massive, muscular tenor tone with an unmatched sense of rhythmic wit and structural genius. His long solos were built from “thematic improvisation,” transforming tiny melodic fragments into grand solos that shifted from a robust fullness to a biting, raspy bark. Playing with an elastic sense of time, Rollins frequently stripped his rhythm sections down to a “pianoless trio” to grant himself total harmonic freedom, allowing him to seamlessly inject joyous Caribbean calypso rhythms or humorous pop-tune quotes into his commanding, deeply vocal performances.

PETER SOMMER

Saxophonist Peter Sommer has contributed his energetic and graceful playing and creative spirit to a wide variety of musical projects ranging from mainstream bebop to classic and contemporary concert music to avant-garde improvisations at venues across the nation and around the world. Peter has released six albums as a leader. His latest release, Soulful Songs and Spirits (2022), features his working septet of Front Range jazz masters playing original arrangements and compositions inspired by legends of the art form. As a concert saxophonist Sommer performs recitals of newly commissioned pieces and masterworks both regionally and abroad. Peter Sommer is Professor of Saxophone and Jazz Studies at Colorado State University in Ft. Collins and is a D’Addario Woodwinds Artist, performing exclusively on Select Jazz and Reserve Reeds on all of his instruments.

Rebirth Brass Band

For almost 4 decades, the Grammy winning Rebirth Brass Band has been “stunning” fans with a fiery live show and a rich musical catalog. Their trademark sound pays homage to the New Orleans brass band tradition while weaving a tapestry that combines elements of jazz, funk, soul, R&B and the sounds from the streets they grew up on. From their legendary 25+ year run of Tuesday nights at the Maple Leaf to stages all over the world, Rebirth is the soundtrack of the Crescent City and her premier musical ambassador.

Founded by brothers Phil and Keith Frazier over 35 years ago, Rebirth began their career playing on the sidewalks of the French Quarter, and quickly landed gigs at second line parades. Those auspicious beginnings have led to thousands of shows to music aficionados everywhere, including heads of state and royalty.

The bands unique “soundtrack of New Orleans” has also garnered admiration from artists of all genres. This project received funding from the Smithsonian’s “Our Shared Future: 250,” a Smithsonian-wide initiative supported by private philanthropy and created to commemorate the nation’s 250th anniversary and advance the Smithsonian vision for the next 250 years.

Snotty Nose Rez Kids

Snotty Nose Rez Kids tore into the music scene with unmistakeable talent and an unforgettable name. Showing off their lyrical prowess and natural storytelling ability, Yung Trybez and Young D jumpstarted the band with two back-to-back albums in 2017. Their follow up album, 2019’s TRAPLINE, really launched their career with hit “Boujee Natives,” and multiple awards including their first Juno nomination. The band took their high voltage live show on the road and clocked 100 shows in 6 different countries.

Their pandemic album, LIFE AFTER, saw greater industry recognition with multiple music magazine cover stories, and strong streaming platform support including Billboard advertisements in Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square, playlist cover images, and an Amazon Twitch Channel Takeover. Taking the album on the road, the band toured 80 shows in support of the album across North America. They received their second Juno nomination and performed during the live broadcast. They were invited by The Toronto Raptors to play a half time show, and to the Vancouver Canucks to play in-between periods.

Their 2022 project, I’M GOOD, HBU? elevated their career to new heights, and saw them receive their fourth Polaris Prize Shortlist, a win for top music video of the year at the Prism Prize Awards for their Beatles-inspired, DAMN RIGHT, and landed them 3 Western Canadian Music Awards, bringing their tally to 13 wins so far. SNRK have gone on to dominate in Hip-Hop music, most recently achieving their biggest milestone, signing to Sony Music. SNRK are blazing their own path, weaving together a musical fabric of hard-hitting lyricism, revealing stories about the struggles they and their people have encountered, empowering protest songs for the front lines, and a humor that keeps even the heaviest of topics something you can vibe to.

Sierra Spirit

Driving long hours through the middle of America, time seems to evaporate, nebulous spaces where memories flit up to the surface and fill the present. Sierra Spirit knows those stretches of land intimately, as if they live in her blood. Some of the Connecticut-via-Oklahoma singer-songwriter’s favorite memories tie back to long car trips with her grandmother, listening to stories about her Native American heritage. “We would listen to music, and my grandma loved the old country stations,” she says. “But what really stuck with me were the stories, the history, the connection.” For her new EP, Rodeo Clown, Sierra Spirit tapped into all of the timeless depth of her heritage, and of those car rides: honoring her attachment to Indigenous culture and blending classic country and folk with soaring indie songwriting.

Even from her name, Spirit’s Native American family plays an important role in her art. “In indigenous culture, we believe in listening and being perceptive to what the world is trying to tell you,” she says. “Before I was born, my dad had a dream where ancestors and family came to him and told him what my name should be.” As she grew up, Spirit then learned more about those traditions and took them into her own creativity. After first learning to play piano as a kid, she took up guitar and unlocked a new songwriting strength. “Oral history is such a huge part of Indigenous culture, and I wanted to paint the picture in as much detail as I can,” she explains. “Songwriting for me is a lot about finding closure for moments in my past and making it into something beautiful and meaningful.”

Colorado musicians Cary Morin & Ghost Dog unite to form a high-energy roots rock band with hints of blues, Americana, and world groove, intent on getting folks up and out of their seats! Named one of NPR Music’s Best Live Sessions of 2020!

Described as “one of the best acoustic pickers on the scene today,” Cary Morin brings together the great musical traditions of America like no other. With deft fingerstyle guitar and vocals that alternately convey melodic elation and gritty world-weariness, Morin crafts an inimitable style often characterized as roots-infused Native Americana with hints of bluegrass, folk, blues, and rock. He has performed at renowned venues across the globe, including the Kennedy Center and Lincoln Center, and is the recipient of numerous awards and accolades.

A master percussionist, the Senegalese-born author, composer and performer Élage Diouf settled in Canada in 1996 to pursue a musical career that continues to flourish today.

?His music, a hybrid of pop, world, blues, folk, and asiko, lies at the artistic crossroads of artists such as Carlinhos Brown, Peter Gabriel, and Andres Cepeda. Due to the musicality of the language, he sings primarily in Wolof, his native tongue.

Spanning genres and disciplines, Dessa’s style is defined by tenderness, ferocity, candor, and wit. As a musician, she’s co-composed for large choirs; crowd-surfed at rock clubs; recorded a live album with the Grammy-winning Minnesota Orchestra; and contributed a track to the #1 album The Hamilton Mixtape. Her TED Talk, which recounts her science experiment on how to fall out of love, has notched more than 5 million views. She’s written for The New York Times and National Geographic Traveler; hosted two seasons of a podcast for the BBC; and published several poetry books and literary collections including the memoir-in-essays My Own Devices (Penguin Random House).

Dessa’s musical career began in earnest when she was asked to join Minneapolis’ Doomtree collective, the hip-hop crew known for bold production, charismatic lyricists, and explosive live shows. May Be Fern

Long-standing friendships and diverse artistic endeavors brought Hannah, Kate, and Madi together to form May Be Fern. Drawing from their eclectic musical backgrounds, the trio crafts a distinctive sound that fuses funk, rock, new-wave synth, and the occasional ballad. When these three artists collaborate on a singular piece of work, it always contains an equal part of each member, resulting in a consistently unique outcome that spans a large range of musical styles. Their debut album, Okay Grandma, Your Turn, celebrated for its innovative approach and infectious energy, garnered critical acclaim, establishing them as a fresh voice in the music scene in 2023. Their sophomore album, Three Of Swords, was released in September of 2025 and landed them a cover story in Westword Magazine, Denver’s biggest entertainment publication. Sunstoney

Sunstoney is an Ethiopian-American singer-songwriter and producer celebrated for her electronic indie-pop sound. Originally from northern Virginia, she relocated to Denver in 2023, quickly immersing herself in the local music scene. (cpr.org)

In April 2024, Sunstoney released her EP, The Mirror Is Calling, a collection of five tracks that delve into themes of self-acceptance and friendship. The EP showcases her expressive songwriting and commitment to radical self-love. The title track has garnered significant attention, recently surpassing 100,000 streams.

Recognizing her impact on the local music scene, Westword listed Sunstoney among the best indie acts to see in Denver, highlighting her as one of the city’s top indie performers. In November 2024, she performed at Westword’s office concert series.

Brooklyn-based psychedelic soul and R&B artist Nick Hakim is performing at the Larimer Lounge in Denver on Monday, September 28, 2026. The show starts at 8:00 PM, with doors opening at 7:00 PM. Tickets here.

Nick Hakim sits somewhere between an analytical philosopher, mystic poet, and abstract painter. To hear him speak of music is to encounter someone who fully understands its power, who has been moved by its magic and seen its miracles. He’s devoted to music as both an ancient artform and eternal medicine. To hear him play music is to feel these truisms in live time. It’s a spirit that the New York-based songwriter has carried in his music—both as composer and collaborator. From early LPs like 2017’s Green Twins and 2020’s Will This Make Me Good, to his new album, I Can See, Hakim has pursued the truth in every note he’s written, every lyric he’s sung. His truth, though, is more akin to the abstract and intangible than the factual—more Borges than George Washington. It’s a cosmic assuredness that manifests throughout I Can See; a belief that the good in the universe is good for a reason.
Almost all of I Can See was recorded during the same time as Hakim’s last LP, 2022’s Cometa, but it exists in an entirely different universe than the one in which that project rests. It also, to a certain extent, exists in a different world than some of I Can See. Half of the album was recorded at Sonic Ranch in Texas, and the other half was pieced together in Hakim’s New York apartment. Both sessions took place during the pandemic, and as such, I Can See is a living, breathing reaction to Hakim’s shifting space in the world. It’s an image of an artist coming to terms with their reality, captured in such a way that it reveals new angles with each subsequent viewing—or, in our case, each subsequent listen.

I Can See is a defining statement from an artist who has yet to put out a record that is anything but. And yet, Nick Hakim’s fourth solo LP is a different experience than his previous efforts. It’s bolder, stronger, more confident. Hakim is more intimately attuned to his vision, and there’s not a note on the album that’s out of place. Nick Hakim might shudder at anyone calling him a healer, but this is certainly music for healing, for taking a breath and facing the world with confidence, lucidity, and joy. “There’s something very gentle and very medicinal about this music. Obviously, we all want our music to be heard by people, but I have a different intention with this record,” he explains, before adding: “The intention is for it to connect with people that need it.”

A Celebration of the Music of Little Miss Sunshine
Friday, October 30 & Saturday, October 31, 2026

In a serendipitous moment on “Morning Becomes Eclectic,” the radio station KCRW in Santa Monica changed the trajectory of both indie cinema and one of Denver’s most distinctive musical voices. When filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris heard DeVotchKa’s evocative sound drifting through the airwaves, they knew they’d found the emotional heartbeat for their film “Little Miss Sunshine.”

That instinct proved prophetic. DeVotchKa’s soundtrack and score for the 2006 film became inseparable from its story. The bittersweet orchestration to the Hoover family’s cross-country journey, captured the themes of hope, resilience, and beautifully imperfect dreams. The band’s signature sound gave the film its unmistakable soul, turning moments like young Olive’s final dance into cultural touchstones.

The work earned DeVotchKa a Grammy nomination for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and the film won two Oscars. Introducing the world to the band’s cinematic, lush orchestral sound, songs like “Til the End of Time” and “How It Ends” transcended the screen to become anthems.

Now, two decades later, DeVotchKa will be celebrating this landmark collaboration with a special 20th anniversary tour, “A Tribute to the Music of Little Miss Sunshine.” The performance honors not just the music that helped define a generation of independent film, but the unlikely journey that began with a radio station, a perfect song at the perfect moment, and a story about never giving up on what makes you different.
