Community to Present Resolution Calling for Accountability and Safety at Douglas County Commissioners Meeting

Douglas County, Colorado — Community members and families impacted by police violence will attend tomorrow’s Douglas County Board of County Commissioners meeting to present a formal community resolution affirming accountability, transparency, and the rejection of policies that shield state actors from civil responsibility.

The resolution comes in response to a proposed county action committing public resources to support sheriff’s deputies in civil litigation. Community leaders argue that such measures risk reinforcing systemic harms and undermining public trust by prioritizing institutional protection over human impact.

The community resolution affirms that true public safety is inseparable from accountability and that the stewardship of public resources must reflect a commitment to justice, dignity, and civil rights.

If public comment is permitted, community advocate MiDian Shofner will address the Board, emphasizing the need for governance that protects people, not just institutions.

“This is about drawing a moral line,” Shofner said. “Public safety cannot exist without accountability. Communities deserve systems that prevent harm, honor human dignity, and ensure that power is exercised responsibly.”

The gathering represents a peaceful assertion of community voice and solidarity with families who have experienced the consequences of systemic police harm. Attendees will call on county leadership to adopt policies centered on transparency, prevention, and equitable treatment under the law.

Community members emphasize that their presence is a demand for a model of safety that is dedicated to justice and accountability.

PRESS CONFERENCE: A Call to Protect Black Women Leaders

Denver, CO — The Epitome of Black Excellence and Partnership calls upon members of the press and community to bear witness, report truthfully, and stand in solidarity as we publicly support Maleeka Jihad (lovingly known as MJ), a nationally respected advocate for racial justice, child welfare reform, and the protection of Black families.

On June 9th, a federal lawsuit will be filed naming the Office of Respondent Parent Counsel as the defendant. The lawsuit outlines what we have come to recognize all too well: retaliation, silencing, and systemic racism embedded within government agencies charged with serving our communities.
MJ was wrongfully terminated by yet another white-led government agency for doing what too few dare to do: tell the truth. Her courage to name racism, her refusal to look away from unethical practices in the child welfare system has made her a target. But MJ did not stand alone then, and she will not stand alone now. She will be joined by a powerful group of Black Women, who have also been targets of this systemic harm.

She now joins a long and growing list of Black Women across the nation who have been publicly targeted, politically punished, and systemically erased for leading with integrity. In this political climate where truth is a threat and Black leadership is met with backlash, we are reminded again: it is not enough to praise Black Women’s work while remaining silent when they are under attack.

This press conference is a call to the conscience of our city and our nation.
The Epitome of Black Excellence and Partnership stands firmly beside MJ. We will walk with her through this fight, ensuring she is fully supported as she takes bold legal steps to seek justice. Not just for herself, but for every Black Woman who has dared to resist erasure.

Members of her legal team will be present to provide context around the lawsuit, outline the systemic implications of her termination, and speak to the broader issue of institutional retaliation against Black Women in leadership.

To the press, we ask not only for coverage, but for courage. To tell this story with the nuance, depth, and truth it demands. To the community, we ask for your presence, your solidarity, and your refusal to look away.
