City-Funded 2026 Immigrant Heritage Month and Juneteenth Celebration Events Announced

BOULDER, Colo. – This year, the city’s Human Relations Fund (HRF), in collaboration with the Office of Arts and Culture, provided support to several organizations hosting events and celebrations that recognize Immigrant Heritage Month and Juneteenth. All events are free and open to the public.

Immigrant Heritage Month events and celebrations honor and celebrate Boulder’s rich, diverse immigrant populations and their integration into the civic, economic, and cultural life of the Boulder community. Events celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month include:

Friday, June 12, from 7 to 9 p.m. – East Window Presents: Trip Ziggurat – Screening and Community Event

  • Where: East Window Arts (4550 Broadway St, Suite C-3B2, Boulder, CO)
  • Details: This event will include the world premiere screening of Trip Ziggurat, a short documentary by Iraqi-American filmmaker Usama Alshaibi, followed by a Q&A with the filmmaker, producer, and cast members, poetry readings by local Arab writers, a presentation from the Boulder-Nablus Sister City Project, and community conversation over Palestinian food and refreshments. The event aims to foster cross-cultural understanding, celebrate Arab and immigrant voices during Immigrant Heritage Month, and create a welcoming space for dialogue between Arab and non-Arab community members.

Sunday, June 28, from 12 to 3 p.m. – Contranarrativas: Acts of Love and Compassion with Luna Cultura

  • Where: Museum of Boulder (2205 Broadway, Boulder, CO)
  • Details: This bilingual event will include live music, mindfulness and wellness activities, interactive presentations, creative workshops, shared meals, and intercultural storytelling centered around counternarratives as tools for compassion, healing, and resisting hate speech. Designed to celebrate migrant histories and cultural diversity in Boulder, the gathering aims to foster intergenerational dialogue, strengthen community well-being and safety, uplift migrant voices through art and poetry, and connect families with local resources and support networks.

Saturday, July 18 from 1 to 5 p.m. – Ilalle Hill Organization’s Immigrant Voices of Freedom Celebration

  • Where: Boulder Chamber of Commerce (2440 Pearl St, Boulder, CO)
  • Details: This event will include an inclusive celebration featuring youth-led performances, open mic storytelling, traditional East African Didinga and Buya dance, cultural body painting, music, traditional attire, and shared African food. Led by immigrant and refugee community members, local nonprofits, and youth leaders, the event aims to foster belonging, celebrate cultural diversity, promote healing and intercultural connection, and highlight the contributions and experiences of immigrant communities.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is an important part of American history as it commemorates the official end of slavery on June 19, 1865. Juneteenth celebration events honor and raise awareness of the independence this holiday represents for African Americans. Events celebrating Juneteenth include:

  • Where: Equality Center of the Rocky Mountains (3340 Mitchell Ln, Boulder, CO)
  • Details: This event will feature dance and movement workshops, improvisation, mindfulness exercises, cultural education dialogues, food, and community fellowship centered around QTPOC liberation and creative expression. Led by a Queer BIPOC dance instructor through SOL VIDA, the event aims to create a family-friendly, sober, and culturally enriching space that honors Black diasporic traditions while exploring movement, joy, healing, and self-expression as practices of liberation and community connection

Thursday, June 25, from 6 to 7 p.m. – Executive Committee African American Cultural Events Presents 13 Fires

  • Where: Dairy Arts Center (2590 Walnut St, Boulder, CO)
  • Details: ECAACE is proud to present an original stage play by Boulder’s own Curtis K. Rogers. 13 Fires tells the story of Indiana Avenue—once a thriving Black cultural mecca in Indianapolis. The Avenue was alive with jazz clubs, Black-owned businesses, and legendary performers such as Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. It was also home to Madam C.J. Walker, whose success symbolized the power, creativity, and resilience of the community that built the neighborhood.

The HRF supports community-initiated activities that focus on or raise awareness of civil rights, human rights, or equity issues and problems in Boulder; facilitate interaction, understanding, collaboration, and civic participation among diverse communities; or enable communities that experience marginalization to celebrate events significant to them while providing learning opportunities to the general population.

City-Sponsored Juneteenth Event

Looking for more ways to celebrate? Join the city for a Juneteenth flag raising and remarks from local leaders.

Through the Office of Equity and Belonging, the city invites the community to join in a celebration and recognition of Juneteenth. On Wednesday, June 17, the city will raise a Juneteenth Flag at the Penfield Tate II Municipal Building at 2:30 p.m. Remarks from city and community leaders will follow the flag raising. The event will also feature live entertainment and free ice cream.

The Office of Equity and Belonging works to eliminate systemic and institutional racism from the City of Boulder’s policies, programs and practices. We strive to transform Boulder into a more inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all who live, work, and play in our community.

Boulder Arts Week celebrates the city’s creative community April 3 to 12, 2026

Artists, performers, and organizations across Boulder will host exhibitions, workshops, performances, and interactive events throughout the week

BOULDER, Colo. – Boulder Arts Week returns April 3 – 12, 2026, as an annual celebration of the artists, nonprofits, businesses, theaters and galleries that help make Boulder’s arts and culture scene vibrant. Throughout the week, community members can explore a wide range of events, including mural tours, theater performances, dance workshops, poetry readings, pottery classes and more offerings across the city.

This year’s Boulder Arts Week features more than 115 events, workshops, and creative experiences taking place across the city. Visitors can also stroll through downtown to view the Student Banner Project along the Pearl Street Mall, featuring 42 new lamp pole banners created by young artists from Columbine Elementary School, Casey Middle School, and Boulder High School. The celebration is supported by over 75 business champions across the city.

“Boulder Arts Week celebrates the creativity at the heart of our community,” said Lauren Click, Office of Arts and Culture Manager. “From neighborhood galleries to student artists and community performances, the week highlights the many ways arts and culture connect people across Boulder. This year is especially meaningful as we unveil the Boulder Arts Blueprint, a roadmap that will guide how we support artists and strengthen Boulder’s creative ecosystem over the next decade.”

The community is invited to celebrate this milestone at the Boulder Arts Blueprint Launch Party on the final day of Arts Week, April 12, from 1 to 3 p.m. at KGNU’s new facility, located at 1720 14th St. The event will feature live painting, hands-on art activities for all ages, a dance performance, temporary tattoos by a local tattoo artist, tours of KGNU’s new building, snacks and refreshments, exclusive swag and live music curated by Roots Music Project. This event will also highlight the winners of this year’s Boulder Arts Week Awards.

The city supported more than 16 events through the Boulder Arts Week Event Sponsorship Program. In addition to the Boulder Arts Blueprint Launch Party, featured events during Boulder Arts Week include:

“Strip Mall Movement” – a series of public dance performances, culminating in a community performance, in the strip mall at 7464 Arapahoe Road in East Boulder. This project is part of the city’s Experiments in Public Art Program.

As the Executive Director at the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance economic partnership, Hovancak spearheaded the Prosperity Partnership, an award-winning economic initiative addressing resiliency, racial equity, entrepreneurship, and economic mobility in Fort Lauderdale/Broward County. Earlier, in his role at the Miami-Dade Beacon Council economic development organization, he led the highly successful One Community One Goal initiative, fostering collaboration among thousands of leaders and achieving an 18% target industry job growth. With a robust background at AT&T, Joseph demonstrated leadership in various roles, including as a Sales Vice President overseeing a four-state, $150 million sales territory.

Boulder, Colorado – April 18, 2023 – On April 25, Boulder Transportation Connections (BTC), with support from the City of Boulder Department of Community Vitality and Boulder Chamber, will be hosting a community event at Boulder Junction’s Hyatt Place.

This event, the second in a series of five, will occur from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., with over 100 people expected to attend. Designed to showcase the Boulder Junction District and the benefits that come from living and working in a transit-oriented development, this event will help residents, employees and visitors learn more about these benefits, which include free RTD EcoPasses, Colorado CarShare credits, access to eScooters and bike paths, and bike share memberships.

Joining BTC will be BCycle, Colorado CarShare, Lime, Community Cycles, Via, and Boulder Valley School District (BVSD), all of which will highlight new transportation technologies.

“BTC is excited to be producing the Clean Air Kickoff: FUNction at Boulder Junction along with the City of Boulder Community Vitality department,” said Elaine C. Erb, BTC’s Sustainable Transportation Planner. “We hope people come and see what Boulder Junction has to offer, from the retail, restaurants, and living spaces, to wonderful places to work. Transit-oriented developments like Boulder Junction make it possible to live car-free or car-light, a fantastic way to reduce your carbon footprint.”

Other events in the FUNction at Boulder Junction series will be held June 28, August 31, and October 11, 2023. This series has been created to foster an interest in the Boulder Junction District and allow BTC and community supporters to draw attention to Boulder Junction and display the benefits of living, working, and visiting Boulder Junction, including a vibrant commercial district and free transit passes.

Boulder Arts Week is April 7 to 15, 2023

Community invited to celebrate Boulder’s arts scene during Boulder Arts Week

 

BOULDER, Colo. – Boulder is home to an abundance of cultural destinations, public art and artists. To celebrate art and creativity in the Boulder community, Boulder Arts Week returns on April 7 for its tenth year. Boulder Arts Week is the only large-scale, inclusive celebration of Boulder’s artists, arts and cultural offerings.

There are many ways for the community to participate in this year’s Boulder Arts Week, including art walks, exhibitions, performances, dance, music, theater, public art, lectures, readings and workshops throughout the city.

Boulder Arts Week is a collaboration of the Boulder County Arts Alliance, the Boulder Chamber of Commerce, the City of Boulder Community Vitality Department, Create Boulder and other cultural leaders in our community.

“Arts and culture contribute to Boulder’s vitality by stimulating creativity and innovation throughout the community,” said Office of Arts and Culture Manager Matt Chasansky. “Boulder has a vibrant arts culture that includes nonprofits, venues, businesses and one of the highest concentrations of professional artists in the country. We celebrate Boulder Arts Week to recognize these leaders and the health, economic and social benefits they contribute to our daily lives. We are thrilled to be able to connect the community with the arts during Boulder Arts Week.”

Boulder, Colorado – March 24, 2022 – On March 15, the Boulder Chamber recognized six honorees at its annual Celebration of Leadership Awards Ceremony presented by FNBO at the Dairy Arts Center.

Honoring prominent businesses and business leaders in the Boulder region, the Celebration of Leadership is an opportunity to network with business and community leaders and for attendees to gain insight into the achievements and civic contributions of outstanding local individuals and companies. This year’s attendees also had the opportunity to hear from U.S. Congressman Joe Neguse who represents Colorado’s 2nd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives.

  • On Oct. 18th, President Joe Biden made a pledge to Congress promising that, if Democrats can hold on to their majority, the first bills he will sign into law in 2023 will protect abortion rights. 
  • On October 6th, President Biden pardoned all people federally convicted on marijuana charges. He also announced an investigation into the drug’s federal classification. 
  • On October 13th, it was reported that the January 6th panel plans to subpoena former President Trump in regards to his actions during the Capitol riot. 
  • Angela Lansbury, star of the beloved mystery show Murder, She Wrote, passed away on October 11th at the age of 96.
  • Nury Martinez, the Los Angeles city council president, was called on by President Biden to resign after audio of her making racist remarks was leaked. 
  • Uvalde, Texas suspended its entire police force on October 7th amid protest of its response to the May 24th mass shooting. 
  • The approved $1 million from Denver’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) has begun to be distributed. The ARPA will distribute the money in 3 stages to around 4,000 individuals experiencing food insecurity as a result of inflation and the COVID pandemic. 
  • FEMA has awarded $3.4 million dollars to the state of Colorado to support Marshall Fire Recovery efforts. 
  • CU Boulder has expanded its parental leave policy with benefits to employees kicking in immediately.
  • A Longmont man named Sammy Valdez that has been suspected in connection with a Lafayette fentanyl overdose has begun his trial. 
  • On Thursday October 6th, Yellow Scene was the first publication to report on the disappearance of Chloe Campbell. Previously listed by police as a runaway, Boulder Police Department was flooded by calls the following day which ultimately caused them to escalate the case on Saturday, October 8th, and formally investigate it. This resulted in Campbell being found and returned to her family on October 10th. 
  • On October 18th, an amber alert was put out for A’myah Gordon, a 10-month old from Aurora. She was last seen in the 14900 block of East Alameda Parkway in Aurora.
  • Denver’s So Many Roads, a Grateful Dead-themed bar, has been ordered to close for the month of November in response to reports of employees dealing cocaine and other substances.

  • The United States reached a record $31 trillion national debt.
  • Longmont City Council Race candidates Mitzi Nicoletti, Sean McCoy, and Gary Hodges, all competing for the same seat, have collectively raised $13,000 in campaign donations. 
  • President Biden has announced that he will release 15 million barrels from the oil reserve.

  • A new law will take effect next year that allows companies to receive tax credits if their employees reduce their transportation to and from work, with companies being eligible for 50% returns.
  • As of June, 15 cities and other local U.S. jurisdictions have decriminalized possession of psilocybin or deprioritized the policing, prosecution, or arrest of users. 
  • COVID rates are down in Colorado. As of October 17th, there have been 155 new cases with a weekly average of 62.

Boulder Economic Summit: Our Path Forward

What: The public health crisis continues to directly impact our local economy. As we all adapt to new ways of delivering products / services, working, learning and socializing, both challenges and opportunities within our economy have become more visible. Join us for our annual 2021 Boulder Economic Summit: Our Path Forward to understand our current economic condition, discern how these conditions have created new trends or amplified existing ones, and move towards practical solutions we can implement that positively impact our economic future.

Hear from local business, academic and civic leaders on how Boulder will take these lessons, adapt to the long-term impacts, and forge a path towards both a strong and inclusive economic recovery. To begin this year’s Summit, we will have an in-person Keynote Session on October 14th at the Embassy Suites Boulder followed by a networking lunch. Confirmed speakers for the Keynote Session include

  •  “Our New Economic Baseline” – Kate Watkins, Chief Economist, Colorado Legislative Council and Brian Lewandowski, Executive Director, Business Research Division, CU Boulder

We will live-stream the broadcast for those who wish to only virtually participate. Lastly, we will convene two solutions-oriented webinars in November and December, focusing on “Our Changing Workforce” and “Our Changing Workplace”.

They replace your lovingly worn running shoes and supply sleeping bags for the family camping trip. When you decide to give yoga a try, they know the class to recommend. They’ll even repair your mountain bike (or best friend, we don’t judge).

I’m talking about the numerous outdoor sports companies that make Boulder a haven for nature junkies. And ActiveBoulder, an outdoor business cluster, plans to bring them all together.

Sparked by the Boulder Chamber of Commerce in 2008, ActiveBoulder has solidified goals to strengthen the area’s status as an outdoor hub and help companies network in the community. Leslie Bohm, CEO of Catalyst Communication and ActiveBoulder chair, said the young organization has already seen growth.

“The fact is that there’s quite a bit of activity already in ActiveBoulder,” Bohm said. “If we can get people to cooperate and get people in touch with each other, we believe there will be a lot of benefits.”

However, herding a large group of spontaneity-fueled people is no easy task. Chamber of Commerce President Susan Graf laughed when she talked about how outdoor business owners are often off on their own adventures.

“It’s been unusually difficult because it’s a very active group of people,” Graf said. “So they’re always out on their bikes or running or climbing or traveling. They spend a lot of time in Europe and other parts of the country, either competing or working on behalf of their businesses. So it has been particularly difficult getting them in one place at one time.”

Despite this challenge, Boulder companies such as GoLite, the Outdoor Industry Association, Boulder Running Company and Boulder Center for Sports Medicine have stepped up to reap the benefits of the alliance. Boulder Center for Sports Medicine founder Andy Pruitt said he thinks the unification will encourage more athletic people to choose Boulder to live.

“We do a lot of physiological testing, biomechanics, coaching and a full line of services for people who want to get better at what they do,” Pruitt said. “So the more of those people that live in and around the Front Range, specifically Boulder County, the busier we’ll be.”

Local bicycle accessory company, CatEye Service and Research Center, is still considering becoming more involved in ActiveBoulder. Director Thomas Prehn said the most beneficial part of the organization would be the local contacts.

“I think it’s the idea behind networking with other companies and being able to present a more unified voice to the city whenever there are issues that might come up related to our businesses and our interests,” Prehn said. “We’ve worked (with outdoor companies) unofficially, but not like this.”

As it continues to develop, ActiveBoulder may play a larger role in voicing business concerns to the city. The outdoor industry faces a unique set of obstacles, and operating in Boulder can add its own complication. Pruitt said working with like-minded companies might bolster negotiations in the future.

“Boulder has not been all that friendly a place to do business,” Pruitt said. “It’s not the government of Boulder, but it’s the cost living here, cost of retail and commercial space. I think bringing us all together helps us identify what the real problems are.”

Issues also include the costs of housing employees and the difficulties of hosting large events. Susan Graf said in a small city like Boulder space and money often conflict.

“(Companies have) space challenges, finding the right kind of space, whether they are a manufacturing company or need office space,” Graf said. “Just the right configuration at the right price can be a real challenge for Boulder companies and this group in particular.”

For now, ActiveBoulder will focus on getting the large outdoor community together to socialize. The trade group hosted four events last year, including an Industry’s Best Practices event, which featured talks about the state of the outdoor industry. Graf said this fall the group plans to use recent Outdoor Industry Association studies to have an updated state of the industry event.

“Whenever possible we try to get one of the companies to host,” Graf said. “I think its more effective when someone from within the industry extends the invitation. If it’s an official Chamber of Commerce invitation it’s not all that compelling.”

With all of the group’s advances, ActiveBoulder still remains in a very early stage. Bohm stressed that there is still plenty of work to be done before outdoor companies can feel the scope of the project.

“Right now we’re just trying to put a structure in place,” Bohm said. “From the way I envision it, we would become more of a force in the local economy. I don’t think we’ve done enough that I would say we’re making a big contribution. I think we can, but I don’t think we’re at that point yet.”
