Cinco de Mayo is on Sunday! We are taking it back from marketers that have hijacked this historic day and shamefully dubbed it “Drinko de Mayo” and reclaiming the true spirit of Cinco de Mayo. Please join us in honoring the historic Battle of Puebla–a fight won by the outnumbered and under-resourced forces para México against the French empire in 1862–and countless struggles for liberation across the Americas as we fight to protect our lands, waters, and cultures against all odds.

Sign the Declaration: If you haven’t already, please take a moment to sign the Declaration to Take Back Cinco de Mayo. Your support is essential to establish a Cinco de Mayo Day of Action for cultural and environmental defense nationwide.
Join la lucha on the Cinco de Mayo Day of Action : Mobilize tus comunidades to make cultural appropriation a mistake of the past and directly defend our environment and cultures on Cinco de Mayo. Resources and ideas for events, storytelling, learning, and more are in the Day of Action toolkit.

Change the Narrative on Social Media: Use the social media toolkit to shift the narrative surrounding Cinco de Mayo from cultural appropriation to celebrating and defending our Latino/a/e heritage. Share the provided graphics and hashtags to raise awareness and engage your followers.

Join the Livestream on 5/5: Mark your calendars for the morning of May 5th and join a livestream hosted by Latino Outdoors (on Youtube, Facebook and Instagram). Christian La Mont, a descendant of a soldier in the Mexican Revolution, will share insights on the significance of this initiative

Get published: write an Op-Ed or Letter-to-the-Editor for your local newspaper, expressing the importance of Taking Back Cinco de Mayo for your community’s well-being. Taking Back Cinco de Mayo provides an opportunity to highlight the battles you are fighting to defend our land, water, air, wildlife, and cultural heritage. When la Batalla de Puebla was won, the people of Puebla defended their land, water, and culture from one of the most powerful military forces at the time. Let’s remember this historic achievement and carry that spirit into our fights for our political, economic, cultural, and environmental liberation.

Cinco de Mayo in Longmont

Cinco de Mayo is a favorite Mexican American holiday, celebrating the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla. Not that anyone remembers that. It’s just a good community day. 2019 will be the 17th Annual Longmont Celebrates Cinco de Mayo at Roosevelt Park! Longmont Celebrates Cinco de Mayo is an event that celebrates culture and honors the health of the Longmont community. Each year thousands of people come together to join in the celebration and enjoy the food, shopping, live entertainment, car show, break dance competition, and free family activities. In support of zero waste we recommend bringing a refillable water bottle; they’ll provide water stations. Viva Theater: The Odd Couple at Dairy Art Center

Says the Dairy, Unger and Madison are at it again! That is Florence Unger and Olive Madison in Neil Simon’s female version of The Odd Couple. A wondrous twist on a classic, this performace asks, “What happens to a friendship when a neat-freak and a slob try to co-exist? And what happens with those suave yet hilarious neighbor brothers?” This is a delightful comedic “upper” with lots of laughs. Tech N9ne’s It Goes Up tour at the Fillmore Denver

Tech N9ne’s prolific horrorcore rap career – songs with Tupac and Eminem, soundtracks for movie, being signed three different times to new labels – and the fact that the pace at which he’s putting out music hasn’t slowed or impacted the quality, makes for a massively devoted fan fase. Friends in the area are legitimately hype to cach Tech at his upcoming and highly anticipated performance at the Fillmore Auditorium, the same venue we’ve gone for other great acts like Anderson .Paak and more. This is part of the Strange Music 20th Anniversary and will feature special guests Dax, Mackenzie Nicole, Krizz Kaliko, ¡Mayday! and UBI of Ces Cru. The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time at Dairy Arts Center.

The Broadway and touring productions of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time wowed audiences and critics alike, so it was only a matter of time before a courageous local company sought the rights and produced this powerful work regionally. The story, which is based on a New York Times Bestselling novel, is about a 15-year-old boy who sets out to find the truth behind the death of his neighbor’s dog. Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company is producing this powerful work with a cast of 10 performing over 30 roles from April 27 through May 19 at the Dairy Arts Center, 2590 Walnut Street, Boulder. Ron Miles at Dazzle

Boasting a collection of album credits with artists like Bill Frisell, Ginger Baker, Don Byron and Mercer Ellington, the MSU professor and long time friend and collaborator of Fred Hess, Ron Miles is considered by many to be one of the top jazz musicians and composers alive today. Despite the fact that Grammy recognitions seems to have eluded him to this point, Miles’ remains as humble and prolific a performer as ever. Disney’s Beauty and the Beast at BDT Stage

If you’re seeking more family-friendly fare look no further than BDT Stage, which is offering the perennial favorite Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, May 4 through August 31. Enjoy dinner before the show (included with ticket) before you get whisked away into fairy tale land as Belle, the Beast, Mrs. Potts, Lumiere, Cogsworth and the rest of the gang sing and dance this beloved story in the intimate and comfortable performance space of BDT Stage. Fred Armisen at the Boulder Theater

Whether you were a fan of his SNL stretch — specifically his spot-on Barack Obama impression — his fantastic cameo work in films like Anchorman: The Legend of  Ron Burgundy, or his absurdist deep-dive into the weird and wet world of the Pacific Northwest in Portlandia, it’s safe to say there’s likely a Fred Armisen for everyone. Armisen’s latest tour, Fred Armisen: Comedy for Musicians But Everyone is Welcome, weaves through the many faces of the Not Ready For Primetime Players-trained laugh-consort. The Rhythm is Gonna Get You

This is not your grandma’s ballet. Ballet Nouveau Colorado is wrapping up its season with perhaps the most exciting show to date. Rarities and Oddities features the world premieres of new works by four choreographers across multiple disciplines. Live music will underscore performances featuring female brawn, shadow puppets and pandas. Yep, pandas, universally accepted as the most awesome of the bear family. Viva Chile Verde

It seems like many state governments in the west and southwest distance themselves from their rich history of Latino cultural pride, but some municipalities are more progressive. Take, for example, Denver’s annual Cinco de Mayo celebration—a bonanza of amazing food, music, arts and commerce, all with a decidedly Chicano focus. And the best part? The fourth annual Green Chili Cook-off, which is quite possibly the best thing about Mexican food in Colorado. At Civic Center Park, 100 W. 14th Ave. Pkwy., May 7, 10am.

Life is Art

The artistic process might be one of the most misunderstood facets of creativity. It’s likely the most individually specific factor—one man’s methods may be another’s madness and vice-versa. That’s what makes the East Boulder County Artists’ studio tour unique. For 12 years, EBCA has pulled back the curtain for two weekends, allowing visitor access to artists’ studios. Blue But Not Sad

The Fox Theatre and Boulder Theater are starting a new tradition with their first Boulder Roots and Blues Summit. For three days and nights in May, both venues will host local and national acts highlighting the best in blues and roots. The inaugural lineup includes Lucinda Williams, Leon Russell, Davy Knowles and Lionel Young. Shows start early at Boulder Theater, then kick into high gear for late night action at the Fox.
