A World-Class Prokofiev Program Comes to Boulder

The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra presents a program devoted to the genius of Sergei Prokofiev. The April 25 concert will showcase the composer’s bold emotion, sharp wit, and striking lyricism. The evening opens with the spirited Lieutenant Kijé Suite. Originally composed for film, it’s a satirical tale of a fictional soldier brought to life through playful marches and expressive melodies. In a special collaboration, the Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra is joined by CPR Classical host Kabin Thomas, whose narration weaves story and music across the suite’s five movements.

Acclaimed pianist Stewart Goodyear takes center stage in Piano Concerto No. 3, a virtuosic and high-energy work that blends rhythmic drive with humor. Widely regarded as one of the most technically demanding concertos in the repertoire, it highlights Goodyear’s precision, clarity, and expressive range.

The program concludes with selections from Romeo and Juliet, Prokofiev’s monumental ballet score transformed into a symphonic journey. From the commanding presence of “Montagues and Capulets” to moments of deep intimacy and loss, the music captures the full emotional arc of Shakespeare’s tragedy with remarkable depth and immediacy.
