Boulder County, Colo. – On June 24, 2026, Boulder County District Attorney Michael Dougherty received a second letter from members of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee regarding the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office’s immigration policy.

Our immigrant protection efforts have been in effect since 2018. They have enhanced community safety. And they will continue. Our office had responded to the first letter from Congress, and their reply to our letter is neither productive nor helpful to the interests of Colorado.

District Attorney Michael Dougherty stated, “This latest letter is another example of political theater that does nothing to make our communities safer.

Every day, our prosecutors are focused on holding violent offenders accountable, supporting victims, and protecting public safety. We prosecute criminal conduct based on the facts, the evidence, and the law, not politics and not a person’s immigration status.

Congress has every right to debate federal immigration policy. But local prosecutors are elected to enforce state criminal laws and keep their communities safe. That is exactly what we will continue doing.

While Congress spends time sending repeated letters to local prosecutors, Americans deserve action on issues that directly affect their lives, including affordable housing, public safety, and other pressing challenges facing our communities.

We will continue to respond through the appropriate legal channels, and we will not be distracted from our mission of serving victims, protecting constitutional rights, and prosecuting crime.”

The House Judiciary Committee’s latest letter reiterates requests previously made to the Boulder County District Attorney’s Office regarding its policies and requests additional documents with a July 8 response deadline.

District Attorney Dougherty remains available to discuss how Boulder County prosecutors make charging decisions, protect victims, and work every day to keep communities safe.
