Milwaukee alt-folk group Field Report, led by Chris Porterfield, plays the Bluebird Theater with Joe Pug in April, so we had a chat.M

Yellow Scene: For the newbie, when did this project start, and what was the mission?

Chris Porterfield: Our first record came out in 2012, and that was the mission statement, that document we made. Ultra-personal songs, dressed up in a way that people can climb into these things that we build and we can hang out in there together.

YS: Describe the sound…

CP: It’s folk music I guess, just dressed up in ways that folk music isn’t usually thought about.

YS: Do you like playing Colorado?

CP: I really do, actually. It’s a great way to get fresh air on stuff. Solo shows kinda inform full band shows, and vice versa. You always kind of learn something about the material that you process, going back and forth with the audience.

YS: What are your plans for the set?

CP: The great thing about the show is that I don’t have to plan it at all. It just kinda happens. There’s sort of a fun element of excitement. I’m not even sure what’s going to happen. It keeps you guessing, and it keeps everybody engaged because you don’t ever slip into a routine of, “I know this song happens after this song, and that song comes next.” There’s a little bit of excitement with that. I’m super-pleased to get back to Denver. The last time we were there, as a full band, we played the Hi-Dive and there was a storm. I didn’t expect anyone to show up, but God bless it, people did show up and it was amazing. They’ve been super kind and generous and inspiring. It’s been a really great trip so far and I can’t wait to get to Denver.

YS: After this tour, what’s next?

CP: When this wraps up, and it’s going to be a while before it does as I’m out until May, we’re getting into festival season. We’ll be doing the festivals in the summer. In the fall, we’re taking it as it comes.
