Shaking off demons and the optimism of punk

Yellow Scene Magazine sat down with Gasoline Lollipops frontman Clay Rose to talk about wrapping the year on NYE at the Fox theater, what’s to come in the new year, and how it’s punk to be optimistic at this point in history. The Gas Pops, consisting of Clay Rose (vocals, guitar), Donny Ambory (lead guitar), Brad Morse (bass), Kevin Matthews (drums), Scott Coulter (keys), are a local band renowned for their eclectic mix of punk-infused Americana music. Spanning over a decade, their genre-defying sound delivers raw yet soul-stirring performances that captivates audiences.

“For the show on New Year’s Eve, the intention is to shake off the demons of the year. Like all the vampiric shit, to shake that off and kind of be reborn again.” Rose’s words encapsulate the band’s ethos, aiming to create an experience, transcending individual struggles to embrace a fresh start. When asked about the magic that happens between the band and the audience, Rose talks about the alchemy between the band, set-list, audience, venue, and mystery of the night that, ultimately, completes the music. He concludes that “the thing that makes me feel the most alive is music and [to be] in a room full of people…together as one.”

Looking ahead, Clay shares that they’re working on a new album set to release in 2024. Listeners at the Fox can look forward to the Gas Pops “debuting a bunch of those on New Year’s Eve.” Next year, we can also expect a third ballet for Wonder Bound with thirty entirely new songs written by Rose. The ballet is the story of Samson and Delilah set in late 70’s East Texas. Taking on so much writing marks a shift in his creative process where, as he put it, he is knocking on inspiration’s door instead of waiting for the knock. “I’ve been writing pop, classic country and some really hardcore punk stuff that I haven’t written since I was like 18. I just keep collecting like a butterfly net.”

When asked about the writing process with the band, all of whom are grads in music while Rose is self-taught, he noted the unique perspective they each bring. “I realized we’re all music scholars. But I went to the school of punk clubs and honky tonks.” Rose also describes the order that comes with collaborating with the band and even an audience, comparing the creative process to the observer effect demonstrated in the “double-slit experiment.” The ideas come together in a way that can be enjoyed by those outside of the landscape of Rose’s mind.

Clay expressed that the new material demands that he “flex [his] optimistic muscles… with young kids now, I’m getting punk rock about being optimistic because I don’t see it anywhere.” While angst and resistance typically come to mind in tandem with punk rock, it’s actually about being anti and embracing the opposite of what’s mainstream. Lately, pessimism and sorrow that can lead to apathy tends to rule our headlines, radicalizing a brighter outlook. This new message of optimism isn’t a rejection of realism though; We can expect rage and catharsis in the new music in clear political stances and raw lyricism, followed up with a path forward. Rose is clear about the intention on the new album by adding “I just want to say up front, before I sing any of these songs, my intention is all inclusive, universal love. And I’m going to be taking a roundabout way of getting there.”

The band also hopes to make up for lost time during the pandemic. “We took such a major hit from the pandemic. It knocked us back a decade and it almost killed the band.” After necessarily taking on a day job, Rose shared that “I’d rather be broke and happy doing what I love than be financially secure and fucking miserable. So, we rallied and we put together a new game plan.”

The Gasoline Lollipops’ music is beyond entertainment; it’s a vessel for transformation, a conduit for catharsis. As they gear up for their NYE show, it’s not just a concert, it’s a collective ritual to shed the past and look toward the promise of a new beginning, all through the power of music. Catch them at the Fox theater with Bonnie & Taylor Sims and Phoebe Hunt at 8:00pm on Dec, 31st.

Gasoline Lollipops stitch scraps of American roots music to patches of their own tattered hearts to form an all-new tapestry of bleeding rock n’ roll.

Front man, Clay Rose was raised between an outlaw, truck-driving father in the mountains of Colorado and a song-writing mama in the sticks outside of Nashville, Tennessee. Clay’s penchant for open roads and trouble making are the backbone of the Gas Pop’s sound. The rest of the and consists of Don Ambory, Scott Coulter, ‘Bad’ Brad Morse, and Kevin Matthews who all come equipped with music degrees from Chicago, Boston, Jacksonville, and Denver, respectively. They each add flavors of their own background and heritage, further diversifying the band’s signature sound.

Gasoline Lollipops are three-time winners of Colorado Daily’s ‘Best Local Band’ award, two-time winners of Denver Westword’s ‘Best Country Band’ award, and winner of Colorado Sound’s 2022 ‘Colorado Spirit’ and ‘Band You’d Drive 105.5 Miles To See’ awards. Over the last several years they have toured throughout the U.S., Belgium, the Netherlands, and Belize. Today, the Gas Pops continue to bend genres and electrify live audiences with ferocious sincerity.

“Clay Rose’s voice immediately reminded me of the likes of Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen; deep, gritty and dark, yet sustained with unwavering intensity and truth.” The Denver Post

“With its barrage of influences, Americana can take many forms. Gasoline Lollipops exemplify this as the Denver-based band combines the unlikely forces of folk and punk into a singular sound.” Pop Matters

“Somewhere in between punk provocateurs and folk storyteller, these talented musicians managed to combine engaging riffs and straight-forward arrangements with personable lyrics and quintessential arrangements that feel organic and diverse.” Colorado Daily

According to the Denver Post, the unique sounds of Gasoline Lollipops (fronted by singer-songwriter Clay Rose) are like “the Coen Brothers and Nick Cave holed up in Nashville after a near-death experience.” Denver Post

The GasPops are just as deserving. Here, frontman Clay rose talks about their love of Tom Petty, growing up with a mohawk in the deep south and their even deeper southern annual trip to Belize.

French Davis: How did the New Year’s Eve Tom Petty tribute show go? What drove that?

Clay Rose: It was a blast. We sold out the Fox Theatre, which I was really surprised about, considering how much competition there is for New Year’s Eve. And we had around a dozen or so local musicians and friends come up and sing Petty tunes with us. It was more of a family reunion than just another gig, you know? Really had a fantastic time.

FD: You grew up in Franklin Tennessee as a bit of an outcast with a mohawk and a convention-shirking perspective. How did you end up cut from so different a cloth as the other kids around you?

CR: It helped that my parents were hippies — I was conditioned against racism and sexism from the time I was very small. The other kids were all sporting Brooks and Dunn t-shirts, along with their confederate flag belt buckles and bumper stickers, and so I kind of associated those things together and I didn’t wanna be a part of that scene. My sister turned me on to the Violent Femmes and TOOL and things like that, but the punk rock thing — West coast punk rock —I loved it from the first time I heard it… It sounded like freedom. It was so anthemic, and the driving drums would kinda imbue you with courage. It gave me the courage and attitude to fight back in a place where I was constantly having to defend myself.

FD What’s the story behind your upcoming third annual jaunt to Belize?

This happens all the time when you’re in a band and it’s 1 a.m., and everyone’s drunk … But he sobered up the next day and we talked again and set it up. This is the first year we’re bringing another Colorado band with us — the Alcapones [www.alcaponesband.com/] — and we’re really excited about that. The hope is in another couple years, we’ll have a full festival of Colorado bands, maybe 5 or 6, playing in Belize.

FD: Talk about the scene in Colorado; what keeps you here, when it might be easier to break out on one of the coasts?

CR: I don’t think it’s harder here — New York and L.A. are over saturated. You gotta pay to play and nobody gives a damn who you are. Colorado’s on the verge of something, lot of big bands have exploded out of here in the last few years. Colorado hasn’t been homogenized yet. You can be what you wanna be. The audience appreciates originality and a homegrown sound that you might not hear in a bigger city. I think it’s the most beautiful place in the world maybe. I keep traveling and going to the same places and coming to the same conclusion, anyhow.

FD: What’s the next project?

CR: We’re working on a new album that hopefully we’ll be releasing in the fall. And we’re in pre-production for a full-length ballet with Wonderbound Ballet, slated for Valentine’s Day of 2020 … We’ll be re-arranging some old stuff and writing new stuff. The new album is a more collaborative process, too. You’ll hear new sounds on the album that you haven’t heard from us before. Sort of a slow walk in that direction. A few of the more “classic tracks” but we’re exploring a lot of new territory.

Elephant Revival at Boulder Theater

Sure, they have instruments like a stomp box and a musical saw and a washboard, but that doesn’t mean you should write them off out of hand as another one of “those bands,” that seem to be trying really hard to define the “Colorado sound” for the rest of us. Truth is, Elephant Revival’s a band built from the best parts of Americana, cut with a strain of Celtic harmony that elevates this group above the rest of the also-rans. The sextet’s been around more than a decade, survived a harrowing bus fire, and released six albums, culminating in 2016’s Petals, arguably their best outing to date.

Catch them Nov. 30 at Boulder Theater at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35+, bouldertheater.com for more information.

Gasoline Lollipops at Fox Theatre

Recognized as Westword’s best country artist of 2016 and the Colorado Daily’s best local group of 2017, the Gasoline Lollipops have built no shortage of momentum heading into what might be their best year yet. They may not be in the same pew, but they’re definitely from the same church as Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, a perennial Centennial State darling. Which isn’t to suggest their sound is copycat — it’s anything but, marked by Jeb Bows’ virtuosic fiddle playing and Clay Rose’s sharp-edged, soaring vocals. They’re arguably one of the best acts to come out of Boulder in a while, so catch them now before ticket prices soar and they start selling songs for ice tea commercials.

Dec. 16 at Fox Theatre, 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $13+, foxtheatre.com for more information.

Beauty and the Beast at Candlelight Dinner Playhouse

Bring the family to the theater when Candlelight Dinner Playhouse presents the family favorite Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. The timeless tale brings Belle’s adventures with the enormous Beast, the evil Gaston and the myriad townspeople, dancing flatware and singing furniture to life on one of Colorado’s most beautiful stages. Enjoy dinner and a show, complete with the actors serving you at your table.

Beauty and the Beast plays Nov. 16–Feb. 14 at the Candlelight Dinner Playhouse. 4747 Marketplace Drive, Johnstown. 970.744.3747, ColoradoCandlelight.com

Lionel Young Band at Nissis

If not, may we humbly recommend heading out to Nissi’s in Lafayette where the best fiddle-fronted blues band in Colorado plays host to your festivities. The Lionel Young Band’s no stranger to Nissi’s stage — they’ve been at it for decades — but they rock the blues with the high-energy enthusiasm of a band half their age.

Catch them Dec. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10, Nissis.com for more information.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at Arvada Center for the Arts

The Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities brings another Broadway smash hit to its stage with the upcoming Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. The perennial favorite is sure to be powerhouse production of one of the most popular musicals of all time. Featuring the classic biblical story of Jacob, Joseph and his 11 brothers, this Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock musical includes hits like “Any Dream Will Do” and “Close Every Door.”

You can catch Joseph from Nov. 17–Dec. 23 at the Arvada Center, 601 Wadsworth Blvd, Arvada, 720.898.7200, ArvadaCenter.org

Tivoli Club Brass Band at Clocktower Cabaret

[Editor’s note: Entertainment editor French Davis plays horn in this band. He’s really good.] There’s a new horn-driven super band in Colorado, and they’re making their debut with locally famous mentalist and performer Professor Phelyx at the Clocktower Cabaret. Featuring players from current and former acts like Judge Roughneck, the Sammy Mayfield Blues Revue, MLIMA, the Mav Trio, FaceMan, the Denver Broncos Stampede Drumline, Red Sage, Alpha Schoolmarm Orchestra, Lost Dog Ensemble and Money Plays 8. And there’s a tuba player. Rumor has it there might be some burlesque involved (not the band — actual professional entertainers).

Check out the show on Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets start at $20, ClocktowerCabaret.com for more information.

Boulder Comedy Show at Bohemian Biergarten

As much as Boulder embraces the arts, finding a decent comedy show can be a bit of an uphill battle. Enter The Boulder Comedy Show, the People’s Republic’s longest-running stand-up showcase, holding court twice every Sunday night (7 and 9:15 p.m.) for around 4-and-ahalf years at the Bohemian Beirgarten, 2017 13th St, Boulder. Hosted by local cut-up Brent Gill the Boulder Comedy Show features top local and national touring talent every week, and is arguably the most committed comedy show anywhere north of at 104th.

Check out BohemianBiergarten.com for more information.

Every Christmas Story Ever Told at Dairy Center for the Arts

If you’re tired of another annual viewing of A Christmas Carol and you’re looking for something a bit irreverent for your holiday-themed entertainment, Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company has just the show for you. Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some) pokes fun at all your favorite holiday classics. From Rudolf to The Nutcracker, no holiday story will be left behind. This is not one of those family friendly holiday classics that are so common this season. In fact, you should probably leave the young ones at home and bring a couple of friends instead.

Every Christmas Story Ever Told runs Dec. 13–24 at the Grace Gramm Theater in the Dairy Center for the Arts. 2590 Walnut St. Boulder, 303.444.7328, Betc.org.

Various Artists

SpokesBUZZ: Band Together Volume V

SpokesBUZZ

SpokesBUZZ is a wonderful organization. It’s the kind of thing that every local scene needs, to bring bands and artists together. In their words, they “promote and incubate local bands, helping them to reach a much wider audience – and the bands in turn bring Colorado along with them, attracting attention for a region where talent is rewarded and entertainment is abundant.”

Being the local arts, culture and music advocates that we are, nothing makes us happier. Band Together is in it’s fifth installment, this awesome compilation album featuring 12 great local groups and musicians. The great thing about the record is that the music spans genres, but every song is fantastic. No filler at all.

Where to begin? Well, first song “We Just Want the World” by Eldren has a disco rock, MGMT vibe that is a lot of fun without being at all dumb. IZCALLi’s Spanish vibe brings new life to classic rock on “Once I Knew Your Name.”

Wasteland Hop and Qbala take completely different but equally impressive approaches to hip-hop. Former Lumineer Maxwell Hughes is an impressive artist in his own right, as “Pulled One Over” proves, and the indie-punk of Shatterproof is energetic and fresh. Our fave is “Out to Sea” by Pandas & People – a killer alt-folk tune with an ultra-anthemic chorus.

But everything here is fabulous. Find out more at spokesbuzz.org. It’s worth it.

There’s a beautiful thing about a mid-week evening at Waterloo. Man, the Louisville venue is a safe-haven, a place where you can just land yourself at the bar and soak up the good vibe, enjoy the good company courtesy of the friendly bar-staff and the cool clientele, sip some good liquor, and enjoy some great music. Owner Josh Karp prides himself on finding great bands to play his place (his dad, Louis, owned Waterloo Records in Austin), and on Tuesdays, the Gasoline Lollipops are the house band.T

Simply speaking, the Gasoline Lollipops is an alt-country band, though there’s a lot more going on than that. Dusty, ancient roots music meets skiffle, bluegrass meets folk, contemporary country meets blues – it all smashes together into a gorgeous cacophony, a stunning debacle of bourbon-infused noise.

All four of the musicians are on top of their game, putting in a near-as-dammit flawless performance. Brad Morse on upright bass is particularly enjoyable – there are few sounds warmer than that of a stand-up bass, and Morse has mastered his craft. But they’re all great; Jonny Mouser doesn’t miss a beat, Donny Ambory shreds on the electric guitar, while Clay Rose has a perfectly hoarse, dusty voice and he can play the acoustic guitar too.

A few people dance but most just take it all in. The plays songs that range from lively to poignant, but always compelling. As they themselves say, “From the swampy nether reaches of the dirty south, to the pristine peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the GasPops are sure to be raging somewhere near you soon.” Go seem ’em.

It’s been six years since the birth of Waterloo, a community watering hole owned by the son, Josh Karp, of the founder of legendary Waterloo Records in Austin, Texas. On August 10, the restaurant, music venue and overall community hot spot will celebrate with music in hopes of keeping Louisville weird.

“It’s our way of saying thank you for supporting us for six years,” Karp said.

A family friend of the Karp’s from Texas, Dale Watson, will be headlining the event. Opening is the Tuesday night house band, Gasoline Lollipops. The event is completely free but occupancy is limited to around 100.

“Big Dale Watson fans come early. I know he has a big draw in southern and northern Colorado, and he just played at Chautauqua with Old Crow recently. We’re big fans. And the Gasoline Lollipops have a huge following––they’re a fantastic local band.”

Birthday cake will be provided by local ice cream shop, Sweet Cow and Waterloo will be giving out gift cards to local businesses.

For the annual event, big name acts from Texas like, Robert Earl Keen, have played in the past. But unfortunately this year big headliners fell through last minute so Karp decided to make it less stressful and free to the public.

“We do them every year, and if we can line up a great headliner then we can do it outside: That’s what we usually shoot for. Hopefully next year will be a big blow-out but in the meantime it will be an indoor blow-out.”
