Tank and the Bangas at Bluebird Theater

There is something so absolutely riveting about watching Tarriona “Tank” Ball perform with her endlessly talented band — it leapt off the literal desk when they blew up thanks to their NPR Tiny Desk Concert performance (and eventual win) in 2017. Since then, the funky/neo-soul/spoken word/hip-hop outfit garnered a Grammy nom for best new artist in 2019 and released two studio albums, Green Ballon (2019, Verve Forecast Records) and last year’s Red Balloon (Verve Forecast Records), which is the album they’re touring on. This brings their studio output to three albums total, including their debut Think Tank (2013, Feedbands Records), and one thing remains indelibly clear throughout all of them — this band is lights-out incredible. Something Rotten at BDT Stage

If you’re a fan of The Bard then you’ll want to check out BDT Stage’s production of the Tony Award-winning Something Rotten. The show, set in the 1590s, is about two brothers – Nigel and Nick Bottom – who are desperate to write a hit play. However, they feel stuck in the shadow of one William Shakespeare and a local soothsayer tells them that their future is not in plays, but in musicals. So the pair set off to write the world’s first musical. A high-energy, dance-filled extravaganza, Something Rotten is a fabulous choice for BDT Stage’s final season. Now playing through April 21. The Book Club Play at Arvada Center for the Arts

While the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities is known for fabulously staged large musicals, it also has a smaller Black Box theater offering compelling smaller shows, perfect for those who like more intimate productions. Running through May 18 is The Book Club Play by Karen Zacarías. It’s the story of a documentary filmmaker who turns his lens on a long-standing book club. The attention forces the group dynamics to take a hilarious turn, and the chaos ensues – filled with enough literary references to please any bibliophile. Jerrie Hurd: Beyond the Male Gaze at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art

Photographer Jerrie Hurd is fascinated in the human form – yet her latest exhibition specializes in figurative photography that avoids objectification. The exhibit, called Jerrie Hurd: Beyond the Male Gaze, features a variety of photographs, often underwater, as Hurd is interested in how water creates an ethereal quality and creates artistic challenges for her to overcome. The title of the exhibit refers to the phrase which is applied to sexualization of people, but this photography exhibit is designed to showcase the beauty in the human form with the artistic challenge of being under water. When it comes to delivering the funny, you’re gonna be hard-pressed to find a better bill in all of the Centennial State in the month of April than these two eminent professionals as Comedy Works presents Alonzo Bodden with Kevin Fitzgerald opening. Bodden broke into national consciousness with his win on the third season of Last Comic Standing, thanks to his effortless delivery and smooth observational takes. Fan Mail 2.0 at Dairy Center for the Arts

Fan Mail 2.0 is a free art exhibit showcasing the internet’s ability to connect artists and expose meaningful connections in a new way. Created by Hyperlink – an artist collective dedicated to alternative artistic experiences – it asked the collective members to select an artist that inspires them and to show their work in the context of our community. Ten artists are featured, all individually selected by the Hyperlink collective, with a wide range of mediums from pottery and sculpture to mixed media, painting and photography.
