A longtime Best of the West favorite, Sakura Japanese Restaurant has earned its reputation through consistency and craft. This is one of our favorite stops, and every new staff member gets taken to Marco’s Hot Dogs & Tacos. It’s a brick taco stand with outdoor seating, and once you’ve had the dogs, the long line makes perfect sense.

Mustard’s Last Stand is the last hot dog you’ll ever want. This place has been voted the best hot dogs in Denver and is in the Vienna Beef Hall of Fame because of their traditional Chicago-style dog that’s been bringing people to the back for over 45 years. Don’t forget the mustard on the classic!

Though it may have started with just Eric Wallace and a homebrew kit in Longmont, Left Hand Brewery has since swept the nation with their iconic nitros. While Left Hand is leaving their handprint across the country, they’re committed to shrinking their footprint, by investing in the most up-to-date energy and water conservation methods.

In their list of 2025’s successes, along with being named World Beer Cup Gold Medalist, were the 5,000+ dogs they petted that year. Two Saturdays ago, six blocks of Lafayette’s downtown were packed to the brim with vendors shoulder to shoulder, live music drifting across the street, the smell of fried food colliding with kettle corn and turkey legs. The annual Lafayette Peach Festival seemed to pull in the entire county, and then some, making it one of the biggest local festivals I’ve ever visited.

Wandering through the sprawl of booths felt familiar, like Boulder Creek Fest, the county fair, or a weekend farmers’ market, where soap makers, salsa sellers, jewelry stalls, and hot sauce hawkers are always part of the crowd.

But this festival was sprawling, even bigger than the fair, with enough room for plenty of new vendors to wedge themselves in.

Funny thing, though: for a Peach Festival, peaches were surprisingly scarce. Sure, you could find peach soap, peach jam, peach lotion, but actual peaches? You could count those stands on one hand. Maybe two or three vendors total, selling crates by the boxful, not slices or samples. Still, the fruit was everywhere.

Later, organizers explained to Yellow Scene Magazine that this was an intentional decision. Each year, there are three certified organic peach growers from Palisade that attend. They are invited so that the festival is opportunity uplift and support their local farmers.

People were lugging their crates down the street like they were stocking up for winter. I saw one family balancing three boxes between them, and they looked pretty pleased with themselves.

If peaches were missing from the booths, they more than made up for it in cobbler.

The longest lines by far were at the cobbler stations, three of them, turning out tray after tray of bubbling peach cobbler courtesy of The Huckleberry, the little Louisville diner on Main Street. Add a scoop of vanilla from Dairy Queen and suddenly it made sense why people were willing to stand half an hour in the blazing sun. That combo was the star of the show, worth the wait.

Me, I’m weak for two things: a good summer drink and pie. I gave in to a peach lemonade so big I needed both hands, tart and refreshing with just enough fruit flavor to feel festive. And then, because of course I did, I went home with a crumbly peach pie that didn’t last the weekend.

If I had one complaint, it’s that the festival never got weird with it. You know how pickle festivals lean in with pickle beer, pickle ice cream, even pickle tea? Here, aside from cobbler, lemonade, pie, and the occasional skincare product, things never got particularly adventurous. I kept waiting for someone to hand me a peach taco or a peach latte. Alas. Maybe next year.

At some point I started asking people the obvious question: So, how many peaches have you eaten today? Almost everyone laughed and admitted: None yet. Still, everyone seemed to have something peach-flavored in hand, whether it be a cobbler, a lemonade, or a cookie.

As for me? My final tally from Lafayette Peach Festival: zero whole peaches, one comically large lemonade, and one pie that vanished long before Monday.

Jimmy Seidel set out to create the best sandwich in the world in 1996, and the result was Snarf’s. Today, Snarf’s locations are all over the Colorado area, and the business is a 25-year winner, showing its true domination over the local sandwich industry. Making it even more special, this “chain” is still locally-owned by Jimmy.

We all know Santiago’s for its iconic supply of breakfast burritos, but this restaurant also has some of the best green chili in Colorado. Winner: Efrain’s of Boulder

Head to Efrain’s of Boulder and try the best green chili in town.  Efrain’s has won this award for close to 25 years.  That’s because everything they do is made the old-school way, the way Efrain’s grandmother taught him. The food itself has an even longer history. This authentic Mexican cuisine is of the Northern Chihuahua variant. ¡Vamos!

Taj Mahal 3 has been tickling the palate with authentic Indian food for more than 20 years in Louisville, and has been collecting Best of the West awards for at least half that time. The son of the restauranteurs who created Gunther Toody’s, Grant Hopfendpirger, set out to bring authentic Mexican cuisine to Lafayette. Expanding to three locations since 2019, TeoCalli brings in customers with clean, fresh and authentic dishes created by a Mexican-born chef who grew up in the kitchen with his mother cooking the daily fresh catch. Give the carne asada taco a try, which consistently wins local food competitions, including ours!

There’s no place like Efrain’s. When they moved out of their tiny hole-in-the-wall on 63rd, we worried they might lose their magic—but they didn’t. They brought their recipes with them and continue to win Best of the West, no matter where they set up shop. After 28 years in business, Efrain’s is just as good today as it was in 1991, with 25 years of BOW awards and a fiercely loyal following to prove it.

Urban Field specializes in Detroit-style square pizzas, characterized by a crispy, thick crust with caramelized cheese edges. Lafayette Peach Festival

There are a few things Colorado delivers better than any other state in the union. Green Chile is one of those things. Skiing. Number of Subarus per capita. And yes, peaches. Take a back seat, Georgia, you’ve got nothing on the magic that comes out of Palisade on the good crop years — which, given the weirdness in climate change, is admittedly a crap shoot lately. Floyd D. Tunson: Ascent at Arvada Center for the Arts

If you’re a fan of visual arts, then you must take the time to check out the galleries at the Arvada Center for the Arts. Currently, you can catch the exhibit titled Floyd D. Tunson: Ascent through Aug. 28. This expansive exhibition features work from five decades by local artist Floyd D. Tunson – one of this area’s most popular contemporary artists. Tunson has created his work exploring his perspectives on race, identity and history – all through his lens as an educator for more than 30 years in the public school system. Face Vocal Band at Nissi’s

True a capella fans are in unanimity when it comes to FACE — Colorado’s enduring, most endearing all-vocal rock band. The group has headlined Red Rocks, performed all over the globe, and delivered a rich, harmonically complex sound at any time they’ve taken the stage, without the trappings of silly things like instruments. And now that Nissi’s has reopened in its new location after the COVID-shuttering it suffered in 2020, there’s more than ample reason to celebrate. Grossly Affectionate at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art

For something totally different, be sure to check out Grossly Affectionate, now on display through September 5 at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art. This abstract artistic exhibition features seven artists all exploring the idea that the body can be a host of different things – from an architectural structure to a landscape, a virtual space or even a humorous costume. She opined that they have the best salad at the market. It comes with rice noodles, chicken or baked tofu, fresh veggies, sesame seeds and an amazing peanut dressing. Add a refreshing glass of ginger lemonade, and you’ll understand her passion.

Pica’s has become a favorite for the east Boulder lunch crowd.  And on Friday evenings throughout the summer, you can find them at the Louisville Street Faire, serving up yummy little tacos with all sorts of slow-cooked meats, freshness and accoutrements. We love the hangar steak with lime pesto and chipotle salsa.

Never fail, Sister’s Pantry (pictured above) always has the longest line. But when you get up front, where you can almost taste the dumplings, you know why you stood in line while your favorite band played your favorite song.  Grab a bowl of dumplings—we recommend the curry chicken dumplings—and don’t forget the cilantro soy vinaigrette and garlic-chili sauce in the side.

There are a few things Colorado does well; microbrews, jamgrass and pot consumption chief among them. But if you’re into agriculture—or eating—you know Olathe sweet corn and Palisades peaches are the two finest examples of their respective foods. The Lafayette Peach Festival focuses on the latter. Reaping the Harvest

What do Paul Newman, Angela Lansbury, Dick Van Dyke and the Arvada Harvest Festival have in common? They were born in 1925. That’s right, one of Colorado’s oldest traditions turns 86 this year and is easily as youthful as it was in its 20s. Launching with a parade of the best marching bands in the state, the Harvest Fest morphs into a carnival atmosphere, punctuated by vendors, live music and vegetable judging contests. Early Bird Gets the Worm

Most bands’ press packs tout how they “defy pigeonholing or classification.” Once in a while, a band actually does that: Denver-based Paper Bird is that band. Some might call them a grass band, but Paper Bird is more; they’re an acoustic roots septet steeped in Americana, sprinkled with equal parts blues, grass and traditional jazz, and served with a side of pop-savvy hook writing.
