WITH A Q&A AND PANEL DISCUSSION WITH FILMMAKER, ANDREW KIRSCHENBAUM,
AND LOCAL HISTORIAN, DR. LUIS TORRES

On Wednesday, January 17, 2024, The League of Women Voters of Colorado, together with The Weekly Issue – El Semanario dual-language newspaper, and the League of Women Voters of Boulder County, are hosting a documentary screening of Nos Vemos Pronto at the Sie FilmCenter.

The 25-minute documentary chronicles the stages of Venezuelan immigration through direct accounts from refugees and was filmed in 2021 in various locations throughout Colombia, from the Venezuelan border to the capital city of Bogotá.

Following the screening is a panel discussion, including the filmmaker, Andrew Kirschenbaum, who will discuss his experience in making the film.

“What we did was from 6 in the morning, we would wake up and there were various tasks we had to do, but we would pack a car full of food and resources and hydration and we’d go up and down these highways where people were walking,”says Kirschenbaum in the New Haven Register.

“I think that what drives me is the story that hasn’t been told or the people who desperately need their stories told to live healthier and happier lives.”

Dr. Luis Torres, MSU’s Deputy Provost for Academic and Student Affairs and professor of Chicana/o Studies (retired) will discuss the fall of democracy in Venezuela from Chavez to Maduro and what these asylum-seekers are fleeing.

This is the first screening of Nos Vemos Pronto in the western United States to give a voice to the displaced and voiceless, shed light on the fragility of democracy and the terrifying consequences of its demise, and support services that are on the front lines of this crisis.

The League of Women Voters of Boulder County is sponsoring an Art Design
Challenge and we invite all Boulder County high school students to
participate. The challenge is open now through January 15, 2024.

We challenge you to design stickers, posters, or bumper stickers with
variations on the general theme of “GET OUT THE VOTE” which will
encourage people to participate in our democracy, both local and national,
during the 2024 election season.

The artwork will be exhibited at various locations throughout the county.
Finalists and semi-finalists will be featured in local media and will receive
prizes. The stickers, posters, and bumper stickers will be shared with voters.
