Take care of your cravings with eight restaurants, three food trucks, and a community lobster fest.

Just because we’re landlocked in Boulder County doesn’t mean that we have to go without seafood on hot summer days. We’ve scoped out the area’s best spots, from old standbys, to sushi, and kitchens on wheels.

From parks to breweries, here’s where you go to put a variety of fresh-caught seafood on your plate when you’re craving something from the ocean.

The sit-down stops

Blackened snapper and crab etoufee.
Spruce Farm & Fish – Let this be your stop for a Boulder hot weather happy hour. It’s complete with East and West Coast oysters on the half shell and an extended wine list to match. But if you’re looking for something more filling, Chef Mike Thom can also pull off blackened snapper over crawfish étouffée, a generous portion of seared scallops, or a spicier Caribbean shrimp made with grilled Gulf shrimp on rice noodles.

Boulder Cork – Along with a ton of other people, when we get off work early, we love to settle in at the Boulder Cork for a celebratory meal. While lots of people talk about the Boulder Cork for their steak, wine list, and fantastic bar, diners also love the restaurant for it’s seafood. We had the Sake Salmon when we stopped there, and we appreciated how lightly it was prepared, with a ginger flavor that was enough to be interesting but still let the salmon shine through. Although we haven’t had it yet, the Rocky Mountain Rainbow Trout over green chile mac and cheese has also caught our eye.

For 25 years, Chef Sung Kho has been offering some of the most delicious versions of it in East Boulder County. In Longmont, Sakura Japanese Cuisine is a great choice if you’re looking for a sit-down Japanese experience. In Erie just off of Highway 7, there’s a second option —, Sakura Japanese Express that’s as convenient as it is delicious.

Casian Seafood – Looking for an intriguing take on a seafood boil? At Casian in Lafayette, Chef Dovi creates some of the area’s best seafood boils with their “Asian Cajun” approach that combines fresh seafood flavors with Vietnamese spice. We sat down and worked through two smaller sized boils — their lemongrass and traditional — both with shrimp, mussels, clams, crayfish, potatoes, and andouille sausage. The lemongrass was our favorite because we liked how the spices balanced out with the stronger seafood flavors.

Reelfish is a fast casual restaurant where you don’t just have to order fish and chips, you have to specify the kind of fish that’s going to be fried. Options include cod, cajun swai, and, if you come on the right day, walleye, halibut, or fresh salmon. There’s also a range of sides including fried clam strips, oysters, shrimp, lobster rolls, lobster bisque, fish tacos, and chowder. This is a menu that keeps their fryer busy.

Jax Fish House & Oyster Bar – When diners are in Boulder and thinking of a restaurant that knows their seafood, Jax is one of the first places to come to mind. For years, people have been heading there for the raw bar and cocktails at happy hour. We’ve spent our share of after-work time there as well. Diners who are staying longer might want to try the Charred Spanish Octopus on smashed potatoes or their enormous Jumbo Lump Crab Cake. But this summer, we’re heading there with the family for Sunday Cioppino — snow crab, mussels, chopped crab, and shrimp in a tomato broth that’s made to inspire bread dipping.

Swaylo’s Tiki Restaurant & Bar – Sometime this summer, you’re going to find a time when you wish you were in the islands, but reality says you have to stay in Boulder County. When this feeling hits, you can at least do a little something about it if you go to Swaylo’s, which opened a bit over a year ago on Dry Creek Road in Longmont. They have plenty of seafood plates including ceviche, salmon with flavor-forward furikake seasoning, fried seafood, coconut shrimp, and fish tacos, with rum-infused fruity island drinks poured into classic tiki glassware to go with. We tried the Furikake Crusted Salmon — it had complex flavors that didn’t blast our palate.

Tortugas – Located across from the post office in Old Town Longmont, Tortugas has been quietly serving diners for years. It’s where you go if you want to pull up a chair for an amazingly well-made meal paired with unstuffy wine. We linger under the festive lights on the back porch when we can and enjoy a full meal featuring their fish of the day with a variety of sauces — we typically go with the mojo. Then there are two items we always get — the shrimp ceviche which is one of our favorites in the area and a bottle of Pete’s Heat hot sauce to take home.

The food trucks

Jimbeaux’s Cajun Cuisine, Crawfish Boils – Though this truck is located in Fort Collins, it heads down our way from time to time. When you see it this summer, try to go. It can be found for special events at places like Left Hand Brewing or the Erie Farmer’s Market where Louisiana-born Chef James offers boils full of crawfish, sausage, corn, and red potatoes. When we have it, we pair it with beer from the brewery where the truck is parked. We also try to finish it off with Jimbeaux’s rum bread pudding, which is a sweet end to all the spicy goodness.

On the Hook – If you made it your mission to try as many varieties of fish and chips this summer, we wouldn’t blame you. If that’s in your plan, line up at On the Hooks’ recognizable blue truck for plates of line-caught Alaskan cod and chips. While the truck can be seen at locations up and down the Front Range, they’re in our area frequently, offering plates stacked with fried goodness that’s satisfying but not too heavy.

The MAINE Event – This truck is New England seafood on wheels, operated by former Mainer-turned-Boulderite Chef Marc Kurnick. If you somehow don’t feel like you’re in the mood for lobster or his lobster rolls, you could try a swordfish BLT with a side of crisp coleslaw, fries, or clam chowder. As long as you’re in the mood for seafood, there are always options here.

The community fest

Niwot’s Lobster Fest – While there’s plenty of dining options for Boulder area seafood, one of our favorites is a non-restaurant-based option. Since 2021, Niwot has been creating their own New England Lobster Fest at Whistlestop Park. If all it had was lobster, we’d still attend because we can’t enjoy enough bright red, butter-soaked crustaceans, but this festival is even better because you’re eating lobster with 200 other neighbors. Along with that, you’ve got live music, wine, beer, cocktails, cookies, and ice cream all served on red and white checkered tablecloths. This fest has always been held to benefit a good cause. Last year’s benefit was for Marshall Fire Victims, and before that, the dinner benefitted area youth sports. This year’s event on June 3 will support Niwot’s Sculpture Park.

Boulder County is ready.

The second month of the year is still darker and colder than we’d like. Unless you’re planning to hit the slopes or strap on a pair of snowshoes in Rocky Mountain National Park, storms that would have seemed cozy in December now seems like an aggravation that requires us to navigate icy roads and pull the snow blower out one more time.

But there’s a bright spot. February is stout month.

The delicious tradition was established by Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery in 1994 and it’s an anticipated high spot during a slower part of the year. It also honors the creativity and deliciousness inherent in darker, maltier beers that take center stage during winter.

Over the years, Mountain Sun menu of beers has remained incredibly extensive and probably one of the best showcases you’ll find for carefully crafted stouts. When kegs run dry they’re replaced with something equally interesting. We’re talking thin mint stout, chai stout, Belgian stouts, hoppy stouts, pastry stouts, coffee stouts and maybe even a white stout.

True stout lovers go multiple times and you should too. At the same time, other taprooms in the area will also be showcasing their darker labors of love. Try them as well. We’ve got a list of highlights below.

Left Hand Brewing

This brewery showcases a lot of stouts, and while their February lineup wasn’t available at press time, there are plenty of standard options available every winter that are worth trying. Of course, their Milk Stout Nitro is a nationally distributed classic with peanut butter and other versions. But we will always have a soft spot for their Wake Up Dead Russian Imperial Stout, which was our introduction to the high ABV, sweet but not too sweet style that will knock you off your barstool in short order.

Outworld Brewing

Outworld brewing on Hwy 119 is a unique sci-fi fantasy themed restaurant with a brewer that knows how to brew a dark beer. Their Midnight Robber is a Caribbean rum barrel aged export stout with flavors of coffee, chocolate and dried fruit. They’ve also got a follow up to their previously brewed Black is Beautiful Brew, originally created as a benefit beer in June, 2020 to call attention to injustices faced by people of color. This newly crafted beer is an Imperial Milk Stout with an ABV of 9%. It’s chocolate notes are also flavored with cinnamon and guajillo chilis for a spicy hit of deliciousness.

Collision Brewing

If you’re looking to try an Irish Stout that’s not Guinnes, head to Collision Brewing, located just up the road from Outworld. This dry stout is well made and classic, with notes from darker malts and a fuller body showing through. At 7.1 percent ABV, its not the smallest stout you can order, but it also isn’t the largest.

Finkel and Garf

Located in Niwot on Lookout Road, the team at Finkel and Garf don’t hesitate to show off their brewing chops by competently crafting beers in a range of styles. No surprise – they’re proficient at making a stout as anyone. Their tasty milk stout is one to try, but they also do imperial stouts and pastry stouts. We don’t know what specialties they’ll have brewing for February, but we’ll be sure to stop by and see.

Westbound and Down Mill

Lots of people seek out Westbound and Down for their stouts. Originally in Idaho Springs, when they moved to 95th and Arapahoe in Lafayette, that meant that people in our area didn’t have to go far to access them. Their oatmeal stout is a classic, and their imperial stout is a classic example of their style. In Lafayette, diners can also order a handcrafted, wood fired pizza that pairs well with the malt and hops in their glass.

Avery Brewing

In this case, we’ve saved some of the biggest options for last. And by biggest we mean biggest ABV. Beloved for decades, there was a time when the eye-popping ABV levels of Gunbarrel-based Avery stouts and imperial stouts led the way in creating larger beers than anyone thought. If you want to expand your stout experience this February, don’t dismiss old guard options like Uncle Jacobs stout, Rumpkin Night Watchman and more.

The holidays are coming and that means plenty of drinks are in your future. Some of the tastiest cocktails, ones that help you warm, enjoy a date, and deal with stressful dinner guests, are made with bourbon. And if you’re looking to try a new, locally made bourbon, there’s something available to make your holidays brighter.

At the beginning of this month, Lyons-based Spirit Hound distillers issued a late fall release of their three year handcrafted bourbon that was aged on fully charred American oak barrels. We attended their socially-distanced release day and tasted the offering. There’s plenty to mention.

For starters, it’s an unblended spirit that’s designated as a high rye bourbon because it has 20 percent rye in the grain bill. That translates to a drinkable, complex, bright, and interesting whisky with notes of black cherry, vanilla, and other stone fruit.

Head Distiller Craig Engelhorn gave us some pointers about the best way to enjoy his newest baby. No surprise – he generally recommends it neat and sipped over time. He also said that the cherry notes in the bourbon makes for one of the best Manhattans he’s served from his tasting room.

This is one of a pair of late 2020 whisky releases from Spirit Hound, both of which were conceived at that same time. Engelhorn shared that, “We brewed the rye whisky first and I liked its character so much that I wanted to brew a high-rye content bourbon. I just loved the flavors we were getting out of it.”

He also explained that working with rye grain for both spirits came with a fair amount of challenges. “Our system isn’t designed to handle large amounts of rye – or corn, honestly. Handling mash for bourbon and rye is a giant pain…a long day. The grains’ beta glucans get pretty sticky.”

As it turns out, what wound up in the glass was a huge payoff for all the work. “When we tasted what came out of the still, we were like, Wow. That’s amazing. It’s a pain in the butt, but it’s yummy.”

While the bourbon is available in limited quantities in liquor stores now, It will be followed by the Rye release on December 5th. When we talked, Engelhorn was looking at options for how to make the release as interesting as possible. Keep an eye on their website at spirithounds. com.

*We intentionally spelled Whisky without the e. Want to know more? Ask Spirit Hound. They’ll be happy to tell you.

Benefit Craft Beer Release: Brewers Unite to Help One of their Own

Grossen Bart Benefit Brew

On November 10th Boulder County’s most prominent brewers gathered with craft beer lovers at Left Hand Brewing Company to support one of their own. They tapped a benefit brew that was designed, created, and poured in support of Walter Bourque, head brewer of Grossen Bart Brewing.

Bourque is in the middle of one of the fiercest battles of his life, a fight with testicular cancer. He’s waging it from Texas, where he’s from, but he’s still on the minds of many in Colorado.

Eager to help however they could, brewers did what they did best – they gathered around a brew system to combine water, malt, and hops in a way that they felt would best honor their colleague and friend.

It took the group some extended email-based planning to come up with a recipe they felt their friend would love. What they ultimately made was a relatively high alcohol content, English-style bitter ale that reminded them of one of Bourque’s favorite past Left Hand beers, an imperial version of the brewery’s Sawtooth ale. They’ve named the beer Texan Rampage.

The release was a full-on fundraising party. Even better, not satisfied with the usual brewing and consuming, there was live music and haircut/beard trims for cash donations.

Now that it has been tapped, it’s available for the general public to enjoy. And every purchase supports Bourque’s cancer battle. It will be available in the Left Hand taproom as well as at Wibby Brewing, 300 Suns, Shoes and Brews, and Oskar Brews. Left Hand is also looking to make it available at area liquor stores.

Left Hand Brewing of Longmont has proved that it’s not just good at brewing beer in general. The 21-year-old brewery’s third gold medal in as many tries for the winter seasonal Fade to Black, Volume 1 at the 2015 Great American Beer Festival is proof positive that Left Hand Brewing co-founder, Eric Wallace, and his crew owns the Export Stout category. L

Winning a GABF medal is fantastic and is evidence that a brewery’s particular batch of beer, in a particular year, was really good. But for a brewery to win three gold medals each of the three times a particular beer is entered in a category pretty much means you own that category. And that’s the case with Fade to Black, Volume 1. It won gold the first time it was entered in 2010, again in 2013 and again this year.

“It is THE Export Stout,” Wallace said. “Of the five volumes we did, it’s my favorite.”
Left Hand Taproom regulars know when it’s coming because the brewery is overcome with the smell of roasting malt. “We’re smoking [malt] for a month. More than a thousand pounds; tons of smoked malt,” Wallace says.

When Wallace was working on the recipe with former Left Hand Brewmaster, Ro Guenzel (now Brewery Manager at Great Divide), he said they rounded up all of the stout beers they could find from around the world, threw out the obvious outliers (Imperial Stouts, Milk Stouts, Oatmeal Stouts, Dry Stouts) and brewed batch after small batch, trying to replicate the flavors from the best examples of the centuries old classic style they could find.

“Three for three?!? Oh, Hell yeah!” Wallace said, holding a snifter of his style-defining stout in front of the GABF Left Hand booth and sporting a grin as wide as the Indian Peaks. “There are no beers out there that have gone three for three. It’s so difficult to win a medal already. And that randomization of who the judges are and what order they taste the beer in, for this to get through all three times and get gold, yeah, that’s brewer glory right there.”

Left Hand also saw two of its other veteran styles, Black Jack Porter and Sawtooth Ale, each win bronzes.

Other local medalists at the 2015 GABF include Avery Brewing, which took home a silver medal for its “White Rascal” Belgian Style Witbier brewed at its gleaming new facility in Gunbarrel Steve and Leslie Kaczeus at Bootstrap Brewing in Niwot took home a silver medal (the first for the four-year-old brewery) for their “Wreak Havoc” Imperial Red Ale and, after launching just over a year ago, Liquid Mechanics in Lafayette took home a bronze medal for their “Altbier.”

But in the area of collaboration, Boulder County shone brightly at this year’s Great American Beer Festival. With 91 entries in the Pro-Am category, Odd 13 Brewing in Lafayette took home a silver medal brewing Mike Froehlich’s “Atahsaisa” and FATE Brewing in Boulder won bronze with Ryan Lotter’s “Citra IPA.”

This week scrambled me up, cooked me in butter, added some salt and pepper and ate me for breakfast.

It’s probably been a pretty stressful week for everyone.

We’ve been glued to our TVs watching wildfires engulf our state. We’ve had cell phones cemented in our hands as we wait for news on loved ones and get word on our own homes. We’ve donated money to the Red Cross and we’ve pulled our cars off to the side of the road to make room for fire trucks with blaring sirens that are racing towards billowing clouds of smoke.

On top of all of that, it’s roasting out. I can’t remember the last time that I didn’t have to apply sunscreen and deodorant multiple times in one day. And of course we all (well most of us) have jobs, and we have to go to them on time and do work during the day. That is by far the most difficult part of the week.

I’ve been counting down the days ‘til the weekend and I’ve been trying to figure out the perfect cure for all of the stress and heat and craziness that have hijacked this week. And I think I’ve figured out just the thing.

Beer.

Come on, you live in Colorado, don’t act like you don’t use a cold, refreshing, craft beer as a reward/your salvation after a crazy week.

Here’s a list of places that you’ll probably find me enjoying a cold one and toasting to a small glimpse of sanity this weekend.

Cheers!

Oskar Blues Tasty Weasel Tap Room | Longmont
If breweries were like universities, Oskar Blues would be my alma mater. However, my tenure with this company didn’t include the awesome new patio they recently built as an addition to their tasting room. Stop by the brewery this weekend, grab a beer and catch a tour of the place and try to relax a little, huh?!

Bootstrap Brewing | Niwot
I’ve haven’t been yet, but I know that you should go here and check out this week-old nano-brewery. I had plans to go earlier this week, but a fire broke out in my ‘hood, and stuff happens. This place is getting warm welcome right now from the local beer scene and is definitely worth checking out.

Boulder Beer | Boulder
I’m a huge fan of Boulder Beer, and even though I stick to one seasonal beer here (Kinda Blue is the epitome of a summer beer), I still can’t think of a patio that I would rather be on at my worst, sitting in the cool shade and noshing on a plate of nachos. Go here. Make an afternoon out of it.

Left Hand Brewing | Longmont
Left Hand is the place to be on June 29th to catch Grateful Dead cover band, the Dark Star Orchestra, and support the victims of the High Park fire while sipping on one of Left Hand’s tasting beers and snacking on some food. The place is gonna be packed. It’s kind of the place to be tomorrow night.

Like, they really aren’t my thing.

Getting blasted by a wall of hot air every time I leave the house and having my face melted off before I even reach my car just isn’t my idea of a good time.

Above all, the worst thing to come out of this Colorado heat wave is the unbelievable damage being done to our scenic landscape. As of today, thirteen fires are burning in Colorado. Thirteen. There’s a fire ban covering most of the state and one look at the hazy and distorted backdrop to the west is enough of an advisory to adhere to the warnings and keep outdoor activities to a minimum.

So aside from getting your daily rain dance on outside, try mixing things up a little this week by keeping a low profile and checking out these indoor events that are not only friendly on your lungs… but equipped with air conditioning!

Climate Change on Earth and Other Planets – Featuring Bill Nye the Science Guy
Tuesday, June 26th | 8:00 p.m. | The Boulder Theater | $10
Admit it—you totally used to watch Bill Nye the Science Guy. You were super impressed by the egg in the bottle trick—I know. Mr. Nye will be giving the keynote tonight and will be speaking along with a handful of presenters about climate change on earth and other planets. Check out everyone’s favorite scientist, get yourself up to speed on this controversial topic and escape the heat wave at the Boulder Theater tonight!

Ash Ganley Live and Girls Night Out!
Wednesday, June 27th | 6-9 p.m. | Wine & Cheese
Ashy Ganley is kind of adorable, and the perfect local performer to play at a Ladies Night! Get your group of friends together, listen to Ash play a set list made up of his own songs along with other popular blues/rock music while you dine on (seriously) delicious cheese plates and sip on a refreshing glass of wine.

Garden Program With Ollin Farms
Friday, June 29th | 11:00 a.m. | WOW Children’s Museum
Ollin Farms is one of my favorite local farms. They are constantly getting involved in the community and holding events to help encourage gardening and farming through the county. This Friday, the folks from Ollin Farms will be tending to the garden at the Children’s Museum in Lafayette were they’ll be giving pointers on successfully growing a garden of your own.

Dark Star & Cold Brews Fundraiser
Friday, June 29th | 7-11:00 p.m. | Left Hand Brewing Tap House
If you’ve been feeling a little helpless lately due to the fact that there really isn’t much you can do to help extinguish the flames threatening so many different areas of Colorado, then I have the perfect event for you. Left Hand Brewing is throwing a fundraiser this Friday night to raise funds to support the Northern Colorado Chapter of the Red Cross and the Rist Canyon Volunteer Fire Department, both of which are experiencing depleted resources due to the High Park fire in Fort Collins. The popular Grateful Dead tribute band, the Dark Star Orchestra, will be rocking the house with live music, and proceeds collected from ticket, beer, food and merchandise sales will help benefit those affected by this fire.

Next week is American Craft Beer week, which naturally means that Boulder County breweries have stocked their calendars full of events to help celebrate the culture and the community of craft beer. Craft beer lovers will be in hoppy/malty heaven this Monday, May 14 through Sunday, May 20, as local breweries offer up a little something for every pint-loving drinker. So grab your favorite koozie, your best beer-drinking buddy, some milk thistle to keep your liver happy and a print out of this blog post to help keep your Craft Beer schedule on point.

Cheers!

And a safe and happy Craft Beer Week for all!

Twisted Pine Brewing | Week Long Celebration |Monday, May 14th – Sunday, May 20th
Twisted Pine is so excited for Craft Beer Week, they’re throwing an event every night for seven days to truly celebrate in style. Ever participated in a frozen t-shirt contest? Me neither. Sounds chilly, and a little ‘naners—but if there’s beer involved—it probably means it’s going to be a good time. Along with the frozen t-shirt contest, Twisted Pine is also hosting a tapping of their Independence Ale along with $2 pints on Monday, musical trivia on Tuesday, a koozie give-away on Thursday, a performance by the popular local band, the Holden Young Trio, on Friday and on Sunday, Twisted Pine gives the gift of all day happy hour. Who doesn’t love a good all day happy hour?! Click here for a complete listing of events.

Avery Brewing Co. | Murray’s Cheese Pairing | Tuesday, May 15th
I’m loving the special events that Avery is hosting in their delicious smelling Barrel-Aging Cellar. Just last month I attended a Sister Hood of the Hops Belgian beer tasting and got some education on the background of Belgian-style beers along with several tasty samples. For Craft Beer Week, Avery is throwing down a cheese and beer pairing event on Tuesday, a lesson in fermentation for anyone who’s interested in brewing beer on Monday, a screening of a film dedicated to women in the beer industry (put on my the Sisterhood of the Hops) on Wednesday and a special tapping on Friday. I pretty much have my heart (and stomach) set on the cheese pairing event which, at the tiny price of $8 per person for 5 tasters of Avery beers paired with my favorite food group, is straight up winning all around.

Oskar Blues Brewery | Hoe Down Throw Down @ The Blake Street Vault | Wednesday, May 16th
I’m a small town girl with a fascination and appreciation for all things country—such as a good ol’ fashioned hoe down. Although local beer giant, Oskar Blues, doesn’t have too much going in at either one of their restaurants or at the brewery, they are throwing down some interesting events in Denver—such as a Hoe Down Throw Down at the Blake Street Vault. OB fans are encouraged to check out the Oskar Blues Beer Dinner at Freshcraft before moseying next door to The Blake Street Vault for a free show by extremely popular Colorado band, The Tusks of Elephant Revival. Tickets for the beer dinner are $35. Which is an excellent price for the quality of beers you are going to drink and the delicious food you’re going to put in your mouth. For a complete listing of Oskar Blues Craft Beer Week events going on around the nation, check here.

Left Hand Brewing | Left Hand/Firestone Walker Beer Dinner | Thursday, May 17th
Left Hand Brewing recently emerged as a serious contender after years of silently building up their current beer empire. This is seriously great for Colorado folks. But what’s even better—Left Hand is teaming up with one of my favorite California breweries, Firestone Walker Brewing Co., for what I can only imagine will be an epic beer dinner at Highland Tap and Burger in Denver next Thursday. The theme of the dinner is “Distinctly American Style Beers” with a combination of brews from two of the hottest breweries on the scene, paired with a menu by Highland Tap and Burger chef, Eli Odell. This beer dinner caps out at 50 seats, so click here and purchase your ticket now!

Boulder Beer Co. | Innovation Celebration Tap Takeover | Saturday, May 19th
Boulder Beer is keeping it local by hosting their Craft Beer Week events at the brewery next week—most exciting of which is the Innovation Celebration Tap Takeover happening on Saturday. Boulder Beer is loading their taps with a selection of their most innovative, small-batch and barrel-aged beers chosen by the brewers who made them. This event is for the true lover of the complex and unique brews coming out of the craft beer scene. The only tricky thing about this event, is that only 40 pints of each beer will be available, which means that you should show up early, and thirsty.

My ego, my calves and my liver are still a little sore from the beating I took this past weekend during the 6th Annual Boulder Beer Pearl Street Scavenger Hunt. Aside from a tummy full of beer, other things I took away from this highly sought after event (tickets sold out in 8 minutes!) included: an appreciation for those used concert tickets that always end up in your wallet, a renewed love for the locals of the fair city of Boulder that spend more time eating in restaurants on Pearl Street than in their own dining rooms and come in handy when scavenging artwork from the inside of restaurant walls—and an appreciation for the awesome awkwardness that is the Pearl Street Mall.

If you’ve never participated in the Boulder Beer Scavenger Hunt, I highly recommend you look into it next year. Although my team, Team BFF (Beer Friends Forever), didn’t take away the grand prize of beer of a year, and lost out to team Purple Rain in the costume contest, I still had a blast running around downtown Boulder– playing games like corn hole, Pictionary and Memory at different bars and restaurants, and collecting awkward items… like rubber babies, golf tees and colored paper clips.

Although you’ll have to wait until next year for this beer-lover’s event to come around again, here’s a list of upcoming beer-centric events that should tide you over for a while.

2012 Samael’s Release and Vertical Tasting
Thursday, April 26th | 6:30 p.m. | Avery Brewing Barrel Aging Cellar
I spent some time in the Avery Brewing Barrel Aging Cellar last week, and let me tell you, these guys take their aged beers seriously! Samael’s Oak Aged Ale is part of the “Demons of Ale” series and promises to demonize your pallet! $20 gets you: in the door, a vertical tasting of Samael’s paired with some tasty desserts.

Microbreweries for the Environment
Friday, April 27th | 8:00 p.m. | The Boulder Theater
This much-loved Boulder event is back again, and ready to serve up craft beers from 20 Colorado microbreweries! Tickets are $25.75 in advance plus an additional $12 for unlimited tastings or $2 per pint of beer. Proceeds from this benefit will be awarded to a slew of local non-profit organizations and the who’s who of the local music scene will provide the entertainment for the evening.

Oskar Blues/Upslope Brewing Beer Dinner
Thursday, May 10th | Time TBD | Oskar Blues Homemade Liquids & Solids
Oskar Blues and Upslope Brewing will be kicking off Craft Beer week on Thursday, May 10th with a collaboration beer dinner held at Oskar Blues Liquids and Solids in Longmont. Food by OB, with Upslope Beer pairings sounds like the makings of one delicious beer dinner. Time and price are still TBD. Keep an eye on the Oblongbar Twitter page for more info.

Chocolate Lab for Lovers… of Craft Beer
Wednesday, May 16th | 7:00 p.m. | Piece, Love & Chocolate
Beer and chocolate go together like peanut butter and jelly—and the chocolatiers at Piece, Love & Chocolate are holding a tasting class to show you why. Join “Madame Chocolat”, Chef Sarah Amorese and Jeff Mendel of Left Hand Brewing as they guide you on your way to a new appreciation for fine chocolate and craft beer—together as one. Tickets are $45 per person. Register here.

Turns out, there are a lot of people in Boulder County that not only dig eating food, but also enjoying pairing their favorite menu items with tasty beverages. With a healthy population of breweries, distilleries and wineries in the area, there always seems to be an excuse to throw some sort of event to showcase how well popular local libations go with the culinary delights coming out of Boulder County’s restaurants.

The next few weeks are full of exciting collaborations by the best of the best of the local food and drink scene. Clear your busy schedules and make your reservations! You’ll be so happy you did.

Centro/Upslope Brewing Beer Dinner @ Upslope Brewing
Sunday, April 15th | 5:30 p.m. | $50 per person
As of late, Upslope Brewing has been pounding the promotional pavement extremely hard with a slew of beer dinners at local restaurants including a special collaboration beer dinner with Boulder’s Centro Latin Kitchen and Refreshment Place to be held at the Upslope Brewery. If you’ve never experienced a beer dinner held in a brewery or a brewery tap room, then you definitely need to check this out. Fresh beer right from the source, great food, and the rustic aroma of craft beer beginnings—it doesn’t get much better than that!

Snout to Tail Dinner @ SALT the Bistro
Monday, April 16th | 6:00 p.m. | $88 per person
SALT has been hogging the limelight lately with the introduction of their $9 Farm to Table Lunches and bar manager, Adrian Sutevski’s, big win at this year’s Boulder’s Best Mixology competition—which means locals have been chomping at the bit to get in on the unique food-focused dinner using several different parts of the pig. 8 courses. You heard me right—I said 8 courses, paired with 8 different beers. You should probably make your reservations now and fast until Monday.

Community Beer Social @ Terrior
Wednesday, April 18th | 6:30 p.m. | $30 per person
I don’t make it to Longmont much, but I’ve been dying to check out some of the many community-involved events that happen at Terrior on a regular basis. Most importantly—events centered around beer. Terrior likes serving good beer, and even better, they like pairing it with delicious food and serving it to you. This month’s Community Beer Social features 3 beers from Schmaltz Brewing Co. in New York, paired with 3 delicious Terrior dishes. Only 15 seats are available for the event so make your reservation today!

Left Hand Brewing Beer Dinner @ Old Chicago Longmont
Thursday, April 19th | 6:30 p.m. | $35 per person
Seriously?! This is happening. This event seemed a little odd to me at first, but it’s Longmont on Longmont action happening and it sounds like it’s going to be a pretty good time. $35 is a steal for anything paired with Left Hand beers; and—Bubba Love will be there. Bubba Love is hilarious. I promise you’ll leave this event with a stomach ache, and not from the food or beer. Bubba will keep you laughing all night with his many stories, and his passion and knowledge of craft beer will give you some homebrewed warm and fuzzies.

Cured-Boxcar-Pizzaria Basta-The Pinyon-Growe Foundation Pop-Up Dinner @ Cured
Monday, April 23rd | 5:30 p.m. | $100 per person
Let’s see a raise of hands—who didn’t shed at least one tiny tear when Chef/Owner, Theo Adely, announced that the most popular place to find the best friend chicken in Boulder was jumping ship and looking for a Denver address. I know, right? A shame—but luckily for the Pinyon’s aficionados, Chef Theo is participating in a “Pop-Up Dinner” that includes a collaborative menu featuring food prepared by Chef Theo, Chef Kelly Whitaker of Pizzeria Basta, Chef Nathan Miller of the Tasterie Truck and of course, yummy items from the folks at Cured. The event is in support of the Growe Foundation and will also feature beer and wine pairings.

Bookcliff Vineyards Annual Spring Barrel Tasting featuring Erik Skokan of Black Cat Bistro
Friday, May 4th & Saturday May 5th | 6:30 p.m. |$70 per person
Many moons ago—okay—last summer, I took a trip to the Bookcliff Vineyard tasting room located in the same neighborhood as Upslope Brewing and Bradford Heap’s soon-to-be distillery venture. Chatting with the knowledgeable and friendly staff, and of course, sampling the delicious wine that is coming out of this place made me an instant fan. Bookcliff always has some sort of an event going on, but their upcoming Annual Spring Barrel Tasting is one that is not to be missed! Sample emerging wines in the winery followed by a 5 course dinner featuring cuisine by Erik Skokan of the Black Cat Bistro.

Odell Beer Dinner at Lucky Pie Louisville
Wednesday, April 25th | 6:30 p.m. |$55 per person
I love Lucky Pie. It’s not a secret. But I’ve also been digging on the Odell Myrcenary IPA which is included as one of the beer pairings in this delicious-sounding beer dinner. Crab fitters, pork loin carpaccio, and espresso panna cotta are just a few of the menu items you’ll be lucky enough to enjoy if you snag tickets to this beer dinner!

Oh Saint Patrick—most people have no idea why they drink Guinness, wear green, eat corned beef and cabbage and celebrate you every year on March 17th, but they always do!

I love Saint Patrick’s Day. The holiday falls a week after my birthday which naturally means that I spent my first Irish holiday of legal drinking age attempting to consume a green beer or a shot of Irish whiskey at every bar on the south side of Pearl St. from the West End Tavern to Conor O’Neills. Needless to say, I failed. My endeavors were short lived and Irish whiskey and anything colored with green food coloring are still a touchy subject to this day!

There are plenty of shenanigans happening locally this weekend to help you celebrate St. Patty’s day in a much less ridiculous manner. Find out which of your favorite local spots are throwing green-inspired celebrations this Saturday.

If you’re a die-hard when it comes to celebrating the holiday, then you should definitely spend your day at Conor O’Neills. The popular Irish pub kicks off an all day celebration with performances by Irish Dancers and bagpipers starting at 10:00 a.m. Obviously, Conor’s will be cooking up some killer Irish fare and offering drink specials on the best alcoholic beverages to come out of Ireland. Also—be sure to check out their website for their recipes for Irish Bread, Guinness Beer Bread and Stout Brownies.

Craving some Shepard’s Pie? How about some Corned Buffalo and Cabbage? The Old Louisville Inn is serving up some Irish grub with a twist at their 18th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival. No cover. Tunes by Pat O’Kelly and the Highland Bagpipers, an Irish Sing-A-Long and a chance to win a 2012 Beach Cruiser! Enjoy drink specials on the patio and find out why OLI is a leader in local St. Patty’s Day celebrations!

If you haven’t discovered the Niwot Tavern yet then St. Patrick’s Day is the perfect time to check out this small town gem. $12 gets you a heaping plate of Corned Beef and Cabbage, Red Potatoes and Irish Soda Bread. Wash down Chef Dave’s expertly prepared Irish cuisine with specially priced Jameson shots, Boulevard Brewing Irish Ales and tasty Irish coffee.

Mike O’Shays in Longmont offers a traditional Irish menu all year long, but they’re serving up Corned Beef and Cabbage this Saturday along with Guinness Tenderloin Tips, Shepard’s Pie and Bangers and Mash. Also enjoy a selection of Irish beers along with some live tunes from the Fort Collins Pipe Band.

And if you’re a glutton for punishment, then start of your St. Patrick’s Day festivities a day early with “The Eve of Destruction Tour” on Friday presented by Left Hand Brewing. Hosted by favorite local brewery rep, Bubba Love, and his team of merry “blackberries in a jar” this event will definitely get you into the spirit of the Irish! Follow Bubba Love as he promotes the Nitro Milk Stout at nine different beer joints in Boulder County. Bubba also promises to serenade you with his favorite Irish drinking songs which I’m sure would even make Saint Patrick proud!

With all of the crazy St. Patty’s Day events going on this weekend, I sure hope the luck of the Irish is on your side when you wake up on Sunday morning!

“May the winds of fortune sail you,
May you sail a gentle sea.
May it always be the other guy
who says, “this drink’s on me.”

Cheers!

There are a ton of strange and unique festivals that happen year-round in Colorado, but the Frozen Dead Guy Days Festival pretty much takes the cake!

For one weekend, every spring, Nederland throws an awesome party to celebrate life, death and the afterlife of one super famous dead guy who spends his days in a really cold Tuff Shed tucked in the hills of Nederland. I mean really, it doesn’t get much cooler than that. (Pun totally intended). This year, the highly anticipated festival is in new hands, but the traditions are staying the same. Pay tribute to Grandpa Bredo, Nederland’s most popular resident, with a weekend filled with live music, craft beer, coffin races, polar plunges, tours of Grandpa Bredo’s resting place, costume contests, a parade of hearses, a cryogenic workshop, pancake breakfast, icy turkey bowling, brain freeze contest and a one of the shortest pub crawls you’ll ever attend! I mean really, it is a dead man’s party. Who could ask for more?

So here’s the skinny. A breakdown of events by day. And be sure to check out the list of bands performing at Dead Guys Days. They’re all pretty much to-die-for.

Valentine’s Day is coming up. I know, I know—I’m not a fan of Cupid and his half-naked, chubby backside either, but this sugar-filled February holiday is kind of hard to avoid. Right this second, love birds from all over are finalizing their orders with the florist, confirming dinner reservations for two at expensive restaurants and trolling liquor store isles for the perfect bottle of bubbly.

To each their own.

But if you really want to get your sweetheart something special this year, consider showing your love by ordering some sweet treats from one of the three local specialty dessert companies below. Give the gift of a beautifully decorated, tasty treat made with love, for the ones you love. (Insert ridiculously corny ‘awww-ing’ sounds here).

Place your sweet treats orders today!

Piece Love and Chocolate
805 Pearl St. | Boulder | 303.449.4804
I’ve never really been much of a sweets person, but on the occasion that a sugar craving sneaks up on me, one dessert always comes to mind: A gluten-free, mouse-filled, vanilla cupcake from Piece, Love and Chocolate. I’ve been known to drive at least thirty minutes out of my way for a taste of this delicious cupcake. And let’s be real, who doesn’t like cupcakes. And since I lack a lot of self-control, I usually end up leaving this sweet-smelling chocolate shop with a bag filled with white chocolate truffles and other assorted desserts as well. To. Die. For. And right now Piece, Love and Chocolate’s display cases are filled with the colors of love and edible hearts. Fantastic place to find the perfect Valentine’s Day gift.

The Tasterie Truck
Mobile Food Truck | Boulder County | 303.550.6111
One of the best cupcakes that I’ve ever tried came from a food truck. Sometimes I dream about their melt-in-your-mouth pomegranate frosting and white cake cupcake. So yummy—and the Tasterie Truck is offering a special Valentine Day menu to help you find the perfect treat for the one you love. Pay $16/half-dozen or $28/dozen and choose from one of these heart-melting flavors: Strawberries and Champagne, Stuffed Triple Chocolate, Red Velvet and more! And this eatery on wheels also has the hook up on chocolate-covered strawberries… So place your order today. And if you’re having trouble deciding which cupcakes to order, then follow the Tasterie Truck on Facebook and Twitter and sample their goodies at a BoCo location near you!

The Daily Cake
Web-Based | Longmont | 303.250.1752 or 303.946.3256
This up-and-coming, local cupcakery is quickly gaining fans by making craft beer a popular ingredient in their unique and tasty cupcakes. Try a Chocolate (Left Hand Brewing) Milk Stout Cake topped with a Salted Butter Cream, or create your own cupcake and craft beer infusion using one of the award-winning brews from Oskar Blues Brewery. Call or order online today to customize your own cupcake from their extensive list of flavors and frostings— or order a dozen of their specialty seasonal cupcakes! Either way, The Daily Cake is the one-stop-shop to find a Valentine’s gift for the craft beer lover and the sugar addict in your life!

This week has been busy. So busy, I didn’t even see February wiggle its way on to my daily calendar. For those of you that don’t know—February is actually a pretty awesome month. When I think of the month of February, I think of an old saying that my Grandma used to tell me:

“Good things come in small packages.” (I’m only 5’1’’. Enough said).

February is a pretty small package compared to the rest of the months, but it’s jam-packed with awesomeness. Did you know that February is Stout Month? Who doesn’t love a good stout. And the Mountain Sun Pub and Brewery couldn’t be more excited about Stout Month. Check out this awesome list of locally produced stouts they put together for you. Rate your favorite stout beers and keep track of the ones you’ve tried here.

February also plays host to fun holidays like Groundhog Day (February 2nd), and Fat Tuesday (February 21st), and for those of you with a significant other—Valentine’s Day. (If I have to list the date of this classic Hallmark holiday, you probably shouldn’t be celebrating it). February is also Chocolate Lovers Month, and my personal favorite, National Bird Feeding Month. Who doesn’t like feeding birds, right?

So show February some appreciation by seriously indulging in the first weekend of this often overlooked month! Check out this line-up of events for Saturday. There’s a little something for everyone.

So everyone—enjoy!

CU Men’s Basketball vs. Oregon | Coors Event Center | Boulder | 7:00 p.m.
Go Buffs! Show my (yes, I said my) Buffs some support against the Oregon Ducks this Saturday at home. Enjoy game day drinks specials at Zolo Grill or grab a beer at Blues and Greens in the Outlook Hotel before you make you make your way over to the game. Remember, cheer loudly for the half-time Tuba Twirlers—they totally deserve it.

Super Firkin Saturday | Lucky Pie Pizza & Tap House | Louisville | 2 p.m.- 5 p.m.
February is the month of love, and there really isn’t anything that I love more than I beer-centric event hosted by my friends at Lucky Pie. What exactly is a firkin? In my opinion, it’s a great way to experiment with craft beer, but check out this Beer Advocate article for the technicalities behind it. This Saturday, Lucky Pie is featuring specialty firkins from Avery Brewing, Left Hand Brewing, Bristol Brewing and Black Fox Brewing—along with Lucky Pie munchies and the opportunity to rub elbows with representatives from each of these four, fantastic Colorado breweries. $20 gets you: In, a glass of each firkin beer, the munchies and the rub elbows bit.

Interstate Stash Express and the Grant Farm | The Dicken’s Opera House | Longmont | 8:00 p.m.
I might be a little biased. I’ve been listening to Terry Kishiyama and the Interstate Stash Express band for years. They’re local. They’re fantastic. They’re going to make your foot twitch. Seriously. And I’ve heard fantastic things about The Grant Farm from fellow bluegrass enthusiasts. This show is a real one-two punch of all things revered in the local music scene.

Second Annual Bob Marley Birthday Party Benefit | The Shine Restaurant and Gathering Place | Boulder | 8:00 p.m.
Did you know that Bob Marley was an Aquarius? He totally was, and the new-kid-on-the-block, Shine, is celebrating Bob in style this Saturday at 8 p.m. This event is sponsored by the Colorado Jamaica Project and will feature the musical stylings of DJ Uplifter along with MC Black Rhino. Tickets are $10 and doors open at 8 p.m. Don’t worry about a thing, because every little thing at this event is going to be alright.

Playback Theater West: A Night of Improvisational Theater | The Dairy Center for the Arts | Boulder | 8 p.m.
If you are one of those exceptionally shy people—that’s okay—but I wouldn’t recommend going to this show. For this improve show, audience participation is a must, and performer’s will perform skits based on stories from the audience to “entertain, enrich and enlighten” audience members. This show is PG-13, which the rating everyone wants from an improv comedy show.

It’s probably been a pretty rough week for you. A lot of you had Monday off, which was cool, but put you behind at work for the rest of the week! Some of you braved the wind and the cold and hit the icy Boulder trails to participate in Winter Bike to Work Day yesterday. Everyone has been hard at work trying to figure out what SOPA and PIPA stand for, along with how exactly to get that “STOP SOPA” tag to run along the bottom of their Twitter avatar. But most importantly, most of you have been really hard at work betting on which 29th St. Mall store Trader Joe’s will be taking over when they make their first appearance in Colorado.

Seriously. I get it. Hard week all around.

So take a load off tonight. You deserve it. Check out one of the events happening near you, and celebrate all of your hard work this week.

The Infamous String Dusters | Fox Theater – Boulder | 9 PM | $18
Any band that has the word ‘infamous’ in their name is probably worth checking out. This band has toured the country playing their unique blend of bluegrass—always making time for a trip to Boulder to cater to the enthusiastic bluegrass scene in the area. Tickets are only $18 and live music is a fantastic treat after a hard week.

Arts & Ales | Left Hand Brewing Tap Room | Longmont | 5-7 PM
Craft beer goes with just about everything, but has a special bond with art. Check out this monthly event at Left Hand’s buzzing tap room in collaboration with Longmont’s, Muse Gallery. Rub elbows with local artists, chat about arty stuff, and sip on the much-buzzed-about Fade to Black Ale by the popular brewery.

Backcountry Film Festival | Neptune Mountaineering | Boulder | 8 PM | $10
Even though the snow isn’t falling outside today, you can still get your snow fix by checking out the winter-centric films being shown at the 2nd Annual Backcountry Film Fest. Get together with like-minded backcountry enthusiasts, and “oh” and “ah” at the beautiful wintery scenes that have been a little scarce in Colorado this year.

Oskar Blues Beer Dinner @ Morning Glory Café | Lafayette | 6 PM | $25/person
In the craft beer world, ordering five beers will typically end up costing you well over $25. (The things we do for good beer). So imagine spending $25, and not only getting five beers from one of Colorado’s fastest growing breweries, but some delicious food to go along with it! If spending $50-$60 on a beer dinner is a little out of your budget, then this awesomely low-priced beer dinner is perfect for you! Make your reservations ASAP, and knock an additional $5 off of your bill by mentioning that you saw their saw their beer dinner post on Facebook!

Road to Winter X Games Aspen 2012 Grand Prize Giveaway | Avery Brewing |Boulder | 7-9 PM
Avery Brewing has been hyping locals up for this year’s Winter X Games in Aspen for the past few weeks now. Tonight, they are giving away the ultimate grand prize that includes: Two tickets to the Winter X Games Kick-Off Bash, 1-night stay for two at the St. Regis Hotel in Aspen, two cases of amazing beer for the room, two lift tickets to Buttermilk Mountain, and two X Games Events Passes for Thursday, January 26th. Whoa. All you have to do is visit the Avery Tap Room this evening, post up with a pint of delicious beer and wait for your chance to win this skier/snowboarders dream trip!

Date Night | Zolo Grill | Boulder | $50 per couple (tax & gratuity not included)
Yum. Comfort food and tequila could perhaps be the best way to reward yourself for a tough work week. Stop by Zolo Grill for dinner tonight, and dine on a seasonal two-course dinner paired with drinks for just $50 per couple. Just remember, you still have one day left in the work week… and although tequila does pair well with Zolo’s mouth-watering menu—it does not pair well with a 6 am wake-up call the next morning.

Most times in life, we are forced to pick a path when we reach the fork in the road, but at the Fork in Lyons, CO—the choice is simple—take the path of least resistance and head inside to the bar.

The Lyons Fork is a restaurant, Beer Union and local hang out located in Downtown Lyons at the end of Main Street where Highway 66 splits and gives way to two of the areas busiest mountain roads, traveled by thousands of Rocky Mountain National Park visitors each year. Opened in 2010 by Lyons locals, Wayne and Debbie Anderson, the Lyons Fork is quickly making a name for itself in the budding Colorado foodie scene.

Over a century ago, the sandstone structure at 450 Main Street housed the McAllister Saloon. Today, the building is still home to one of the most popular bars in town—but instead of moonshine and whiskey, the Lyons Fork is serving their customers some of the best brews coming from the craft beer nation. From local favorites, Avery Brewing Co. and Left Hand Brewing, to nationally acclaimed breweries such as Stone Brewing (CA), Port Brewing (CA), and Victory Brewing Co. (PA), the Fork is offering up specialty, aged, oaked, drinkable and unique brews that make up their ever-changing and diverse beer list.

With over twenty years of combined sales experience in the craft brewing industry, it’s no surprise that Wayne and Debbie Anderson take special measures to offer their customers the best of the oldies and goodies of craft beer. These days, the Anderson’s are also educating their guests on the craft beer world as well, by holding Beer Dinners every few months with a representative from a guest brewery pulling out all the stops, bringing in popular and specialty beers from their brewery and introducing each beer that is carefully paired with a menu created by Executive Chef, and beer/food pairing genius, Ian Rubenoff.

Although Fork Beer Dinners typically consist of five-courses paired with five beers, I was lucky enough to snag one of the last seats to the three-course, Stone Brewing Bastard Series Beer Dinner held last Thursday. I dined on duck confit with an orange marmalade sauce, smoked pork loin stuffed with Haystack mountain goat cheese, herbs, (and a little bit of heaven), a sweet potato mash, and a toffee crusted, coconut, almond and chocolate torte that left the entire group speechless for the majority of the dessert round. Representatives of Stone Brewing walked guests through the brewing process and history of each brew which included the Arrogant Bastard Ale, an Oaked Arrogant Bastard and a 2010 Double Bastard.

As usual, I left the Lyons Fork with a full belly, a better knowledge of craft brewing and new friends. If you haven’t been to a Beer Dinner at the Lyons Fork, I suggest you hurry up and sign up for the December 13th, five-course dinner with Boulder’s newest microbrewery, Upslope Brewing. Tickets are $60.00 and always sell out fast. Sample one of the Fork’s popular margaritas before dinner, say hello to Wayne and Debbie and enjoy one of the best meals that you’ve ever eaten with forty-five of your newest friends and craft beer converts.

The Lyons Fork is located at 450 Main St. and offers dinner service from 4:00-9:00 p.m., Monday-Friday and brunch from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Click here for more information on the Upslope Beer Dinner.

I’ve given out hundreds of food-related awards over the years ranging from local “best of” lists to the James Beard Awards, and I learned one thing: awards are designed to instigate debate and make people really mad.

No sooner had I read that Boulder had been named “America’s Foodiest Town 2010” in the September Bon Appetit, then the complaints rang out.

The magazine considered small cities (fewer than 250,000 people) with quality farmers’ markets, concerned farmers, dedicated food media, first-rate restaurants, talented food artisans and a community of food lovers.

Although he spends a lot of space writing about his hiking and biking excursions, restaurant editor Andrew Knowlton does laud and mention a slew of notable institutions including Dish Gourmet, Avery Brewing, Celestial Seasonings, The Kitchen, Salt Bistro, Izze, Bhakti Chai, Frasca, Pizzeria Basta, Left Hand Brewing, Boulder County Farmers Market, Sisters Pantry dumplings, Mountain Sun Pub, Mateo, Café Aion, Leaf, Kim & Jake’s Cakes, Bitter Bar and Sushi Tora.

Some of the more venomous reactions left on articles, blogs and as Facebook posts were from people who loathe Boulder and Boulderites and can’t imagine anything good happening here. Others allowed as how Boulder was a pretty place for a snack, but hardly a culinary destination and detailed the many failings of the chefs, servers, customers and food writers.

Local readers mainly complained about the food businesses that should have been included in Bon Appetit. How could they not include restaurants like L’Atelier, Amu, Black Cat Bistro and Larkburger, and chefs such as Hosea Rosenberg and Eric Skokan? Shouldn’t any appraisal of Boulder “foodiness” take note of the Culinary School of the Rockies, Seth Ellis Chocolatier, microdistillers like 303 Vodka and Roundhouse Spirits, not to mention outstanding tea houses, coffee artisans, mead makers and bread and dessert bakers? What about the fact that Boulder may be one of the best places to grocery shop in the U.S. with its wealth of conventional, natural, organic, specialty and international retailers?

My complaint is that when it comes to cuisine, no city—including the foodiest small city in America—is an island. The award should have been given to the Boulder foodshed, which incorporates Boulder County and beyond. After all, most of the produce sold at Boulder’s famed market is not grown in Boulder. Haystack’s goat cheeses, Madhava’s honey and Oskar Blues’ fine ales are produced outside the border of the People’s Republic. And most of the folks working at most of the city’s food landmarks do not actually live there.

“(Boulder) is a bellwether of a changing food culture across our land,” writes Bon Appetit’s Andrew Knowlton. While I happen to agree with him, this is one Boulder foodie who knows that the city’s stature reflects the wonderful community of towns that form this tasty place we call home.

There was a time when it seemed The Great American Beer Festival was little more than the best all-you-can-drink happy hour under one roof. But when it rolls into Denver Oct. 11-13, please don’t revert to your beer-chugging college days. Beer deserves better.

It’s time to step up to the level of connoisseur. Admittedly, we didn’t know how to do that, either. So we enlisted the help of Ro Guenzel, brewer at Left Hand Brewing Co. in Longmont, and Sean Davis, a Boulder home brewer who has a batch of suds available at Mountain Sun. We discussed tips and tricks of the trade and quickly learned that drinking beer was something that required an education. More than a few samples of Left Hand brews were passed around to help us test our new knowledge. This can be a tough job. In the end, we came up with this foolproof plan of how to conquer the GABF without getting too drunk to decipher a red ale from a milk stout:

Map Out Your Night
There are hundreds of brewers and even more types of beer in the Colorado Convention Center’s hall. Try and drink them all, and you’re guaranteed a ride home courtesy of the local ambulance company. But if you wander aimlessly, you risk leaving without a beer buzz. Check out beertown.org for maps of regions and breweries to build a gameplan before inebriation.

Find Beer Geeks
One of the best things about our educational roundtable was sitting with two proud beer geeks—they are one of the friendliest breeds of geek, and their knowledge of hops and barley is stupefying. Seek a certified geek of your own for tidbits such as the super secret beer no one else knows about, and where to find the best chili pepper beer. A quick note on finding one: They are the ones with a notepad who swirl before swallowing.

Learn To Taste
Beer can be more complex than wine and has the ability to take on so many kinds of flavor. Before tasting, take in the color and sediments to see how well it’s filtered. Then stick your nose into your glass and enjoy the aroma. When you sip, swirl it, note the carbonation and enjoy the aftertaste. This is where a pen and pad comes in. After a long night of tasting, your scrupulous notes will remind you which to buy next time you head to Liquor Universe.

Clean Your Palate
Possibly the greatest invention of all time, the pretzel necklace fills your stomach during a long night, serves as a beer-drinking abacus and is an easy way to start up a conversation with a member of the opposite sex. Oh, and it helps rid the flavor of the previous beer so you can make proper comparisons. Water works well, too.

When To Go
If you like to party, the Saturday night crush is the way to go. If you’re ready to be a connoisseur, try the Thursday night or Saturday day session. Also check out various seminars and classes offered.

Other Tips
Rinse your taster frequently, drink lighter tasting beers first, wear shoes you don’t like, and designate a sober driver, grab a hotel room or take advantage of RTD.
