The United States Of America – 1776-2024

The United States of America, a country that became world renowned for freedom and justice, died on November 5th at her home in Washington, D.C. The United States was 258 years old.

The office of the medical examiner ruled the death a homicide at the hands of 76 million of her own descendants. The homicide appears to be a collateral effect of an epidemic of raging stupidity.

The United States was born in 1776, the child of immigrant parents who had come to North America seeking freedom from religious oppression. Her grandparents were born and raised in Great Britain and her early years were consumed by a struggle to establish independence on her new continent. She succeeded, despite violent resistance from her forbears. Over the years they reconciled.

Life was challenging for the United States, but the drive for discovery and self-reliance forged a strong and enduring identity. Unfortunately, her drive and ambition came at the expense of the native people who had, for centuries before, occupied and cherished the continent. While sporadic efforts were made to compensate native people, at the time of her death, much work remained.

In the 19th century, a moral crisis interrupted her development, resulting in several years when she suffered from a Dissociative Identity Disorder. The several identities clashed violently from 1861-65. While subsequent therapy partially mitigated the disorder, vestiges of the conflict remained until her death, with a flare-up in the decade before her passing.

Her middle years were a period of astounding growth. She expanded her sense of the possible and became one of the world’s most prolific artists, innovators and entrepreneurs. Many of her inventions dramatically changed the world for the better.

Perhaps these years were most distinguished by her generosity of spirit. She welcomed beleaguered women, men and children to enter her embrace. She adopted them as her own and watched with great pride as they forged their own lives, adding richness to the mosaic of their new home and adding immeasurably to its vitality and diversity.

In the 20th century, she was faced with her greatest challenges. Twice, the world faced potentially cataclysmic threats. She joined with her grandparents and other allies and justice prevailed. The cost was immense and she, along with the rest of the world, lost many children to the unthinkable ravages of war.

During her later years, she expanded the concept of justice, demanding equity for all her children, regardless of race, gender and sexual identity, religion or origin. In the years before her death, she suffered great pain as these hard-fought gains withered under pernicious political assault. She was particularly shattered by the reversal of rights for women and girls. Tragically, in recent years, her spirit of generosity and compassion was further broken as some of her children built physical and metaphysical barriers to prevent continuing assimilation of immigrants.

While she made mistakes, as we all do, her legacy includes the inspiration she offered to others who sought to offer liberty and justice for their own children. The loss of her example is deeply mourned around the world.

She leaves behind hundreds of millions of children and many generations who benefitted from her grace and wisdom.

Among her most notable survivors are:

Alexander Hamilton, Abraham Lincoln, Margaret Mead, Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Billy Collins, Martin Luther King, Jr., Malcolm X, Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Otis Redding, Thurgood Marshall, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Thelonious Monk, Harriet Tubman, Rachel Carson, Barack Obama, George Carlin, Ella Fitzgerald, Albert Einstein, Arthur Miller, Audre Lorde, Mohammad Ali, George Gershwin, James Baldwin, Arthur Ashe, James Earl Carter, Will Rogers, Dorothy Parker, and Tatanka Yotanka.

The family asks that memorial contributions be made to:

“I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Few readers will be reading this quote for the first time. Those on the anti-racist spectrum read it as aspirational, expressing King’s hope for an end to racism. It was, of course, “a dream,” not an observation. Unfortunately, post-racism racists truncate the message and weaponize the quote against affirmative action, critical race theory and diversity/equity work.

This latter interpretation is among the many reasons I experience MLK Day with great ambivalence. Co-opting “content of character” has become a conservative bludgeon, often accompanied by self-righteous claims of “colorblindness;” which is not a vision anomaly, but an example of moral dishonesty. If one claims to be blind to another’s race, they are willfully dismissing that person’s reality; not only denying their color, but denying their pain, their beauty, their rich history and their powerfully important voices. Colorblindness may be the most virulent iteration of racism.

But my ambivalence runs more deeply than objecting to white folks twisting King’s words to soothe their own consciences or serve their own political ends.

My two concerns both relate to what culturally responsive teaching calls the Heroes and Holidays (H&H) approach to race and racism. I know many readers are familiar with the criticism of this approach, but I’ll summarize briefly for those who are not.

H&H, particularly Black History Month or MLK Day activities, go further toward “otherizing” the non-dominant group. The corollary to Black History Month is 11 White History Months. Black History Month compresses the historical truths of Black women and men into a few school assemblies, almost invariably with a reading of or allusion to the “I Have a Dream”speech.

This compression and “otherIzing” provides tacit permission to neglect a wholesale reassessment of curriculum in schools to more accurately reflect our nation’s history.

It provides some of the fodder for many political figures who rail against Critical Race Theory (CRT) in schools. The too-familiar response to these attacks is to argue, quite accurately, that CRT is not taught in schools.

What too few progressive folks are willing to say is that CRT damn well should be taught in schools! This is not to suggest that every dimension of CRT is unimpeachable. It is Critical Race THEORY, after all. Like the powerful 1619 Project and curriculum, which has been credibly criticized by some historians, CRT (and the 1619 Project) provides compelling alternatives to conventional teaching, offering rich opportunity for debate and discussion. Instead we have MLK Day, Black History Month, a few posters of Rosa Parks and back to white, Euro-centric business as usual. Offering these tokens allows some politicians, educators and anti-racist racists to abdicate their responsibility to the truth.

My other concern is the ironically described “whitewashing” of King’s legacy. There is some general knowledge of King’s so-called “womanizing.” Even King’s most enthusiastic apologists acknowledge this history and then dismiss it as a personal weakness that should be subsumed within the grander story of his courageous life and inestimable role in the incomplete struggle for racial equity.

But, unfortunately, there is evidence that his “weakness” was not a mere ethical lapse or two, but a deeply troubling history of using women parishioners, cheating on his wife and offering advice and and encouragement as a fellow minister raped a woman. These reports are not mere gossip, but results of comprehensive research by one of King’s most respected biographers, David Barrow. These allegations are partially based on review of FBI records and, while primary sources have not yet been released, Barrow’s findings are sadly credible. The British magazine Standpoint published the story in 2019 after it was turned down by several American publications. A few others, including the Wall Street Journal, covered the story briefly, then allowed it to recede into the darker background of King’s full legacy.

I suspect others see this differently and please feel welcome to present a different perspective in the comments. I am not a serial moralizer, but there are acts or patterns of behavior that fall outside other instances of personal and private frailty that do not disqualify one from admiration or position.

I would differentiate, for example, between the apparently consensual sexual dalliances of JFK and the dismal behavior of Bill Clinton with an intern in the White House. JFK’s indiscretions diminish my admiration for him. Clinton’s “indiscretion” would be cause for termination of employment in many organizations.

As I prepare to dismount my high horse . . .

Too often the “indiscretions” of powerful or talented men are excused as though they are the natural companion to genius or achievement. Nonsense. We might well judge all such men on the “content of their characters.”

Now off my horse I’ll end by acknowledging the importance of Martin Luther King, Jr. in the fight for racial and economic justice. He was a great leader, a powerful orator, and deserves his place in history.

But I’d prefer that we skip the “Days,” “Months” and monuments. Coming to a full reckoning of the ugly reality of slavery and racism requires truth, not holidays.

Congratulations!

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Tribute Concert and Humanitarian Awards

Humanitarian recipients have come from all walks of life, but each has been driven, as Dr. King was, by the desire to help and make the world a better place.

Our very own Minister Glenda Strong Robinson has been selected by the 2023 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission to receive The Honorable Menola Upshaw Lifetime Achievement Award for 2023 for living out the purposes of the Commission and dedicating her life’s work to keeping Dr. King’s Dream Alive. This Award is presented to those who actively desire to help and make the world a better place. She believes that we do this by “using our differences to make a difference!”

This honor and celebration will take place on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, at Boettcher Concert Hall at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts Complex in downtown Denver. There will be a concert by the Denver Symphony and a meal beginning around 5:30 p.m. that is free and open to the public on a first come first served basis. Check for definite by visiting the website at drmartinlkingjrchc.org.

Since the early 90s, Minister Robinson has been providing Dr. MLK, Jr. programs throughout the Boulder Valley to educate the communities on the price that has been paid for the freedoms we enjoy and what folks can do to become that “beloved community” that Dr. King fervently described. He said, “Our lives begin to end the moment we become silent about things that matter.”

The purpose of the Statewide Dr. MLK, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission is to unify and educate communities within the State of Colorado and encourage appropriate observations, ceremonies, and activities in commemoration of the federal holiday and state legal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. throughout all the towns, cities, school districts, counties, and local governments within Colorado. Please tune in to all the Festivities of the Week Sponsored by the 2023 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission.

Towards Health Equity: Saving Lives of Black Mothers & Infants

Maternal morbidity and mortality rates are rising in the United States (“U.S.”), and the U.S. has one of the largest. Sister-to-Sister: International Network of Professional African American Women, Inc. (“Sister-to-Sister, Inc.“), a Colorado incorporated, tax-exempt public charity, strives to raise Coloradoans’ consciousness concerning morbidity and mortality among Black women, as they experience the highest disproportionality of deaths, chronic complications post-pregnancy, and early death. Reliable data conclusively evidence that, across all income spectrums, education levels, and employment levels, pregnant Black women are three times more likely than their non-Hispanic white counterparts to die in childbirth. They further reflect that Black newborns are twice as likely as white newborns, to die during their first year.

On January 21, 2023, Sister-to-Sister, Inc. is hosting a private screening of Aftershock, an award-winning documentary that highlights the public health crisis presented by toll on African American women’s lives based on inequitable healthcare. This event is free and open to the public.
Communications Committee

It’s a new year and Black Talk is taking up a long-standing crisis: racialized healthcare. Our guest, Dayna Bowen Matthew, JD, Ph.D., will talk to us about the racial, ethnic, economic, and social determinants and disparities in America’s healthcare system. Dean Matthew is currently the Dean and Harold H. Greene Professor of Law at the George Washington University Law School in the nation’s capital. Dean Matthew was a CU law school professor and vice dean, a member of the Center for Bioethics Humanities on the Anschutz Medical Center campus, and held a joint appointment at the Colorado School of Public Health and co-founded the Colorado Health Equity Project. We will learn how Dean Matthew’s intersectional approach to tackling racial inequalities in health, housing, and education, conspire and inspired the content of her two books, Just Medicine: A Cure for Racial Inequality in American Healthcare (2018 and Just Health: Treating Structural Racism to Heal America (2022). Dean Matthew will be in Colorado on 21 January 2023, as the featured guest of Sister-to-Sister, an international network of professional African American women.

We spoke with Woog’s opponent for House District 19, Jennifer Parenti, about the vote on January 18th and the amendment votes that followed. Parenti, a veteran and single mother, took to the campaign trail after the attack on January 6th last year.

“These are not the values our country is built on. No one should be out there thanking and congratulating people who commit crime. The people caught on January 6th in the Capital, they’re going to jail. I am a veteran, and I served for over 20 years between the Air Force and NATO. People like me, that they seem to hold in such high regard as veterans, spent our entire careers defending against these attacks against our democracy. Today at the Capitol, the Republicans, by and large Dan amongst them, voted against the history of the Voting Rights Act that was first signed in 1965. This Voting Rights Act is what Martin Luther King Jr. was marching for. They are saying we support Martin Luther King Jr., then the next day they’re voting against the Voting Rights Act.”

Woog’s Twitter post from last year’s celebration on January 17, 2021, sits as a reminder of a promise broken, “Let us always remain committed to upholding his legacy and meeting our sacred obligation to protect the unalienable rights of all Americans.”

When asked whether she thought there was any particular motive behind Woog’s actions, Parenti noted the connection of prioritizing the rights of minority groups within the Voting Rights Act. “The federal legislation is geared toward protecting minority voting rights. We are fortunate to have a fair and open democracy here in Colorado. He’s not willing to sign a piece of paper that says, ‘I support Federal Voting legislation that will support minority voting rights.’ I think that’s pretty clear his actions speak for themselves.”

With Woog’s intentions made clear, it brings into question whether he is genuinely the right candidate in his current position with the State, Veterans, & Military Affairs Committee. The committee oversees the safety and celebration of veterans, active military members and voting affairs. His decision to thank those who breached the Capital goes against the very oath he took in defending the U.S. Constitution.

Yellow Scene Magazine attempted to contact Woog for comment. He would not speak to us, yet released an official statement on Facebook regarding his vote of the Voting Rights Act, which stated: “We have one of the best, if not, the best Clerk in the State in Weld County. I am proud of the tireless work that Carly Koppes does to keep our elections secure.” His statement has made it clear Woog has one thing on his mind, keeping in good standing with the Weld County Clerk, Republican Carly Koppe.
