The Boulder Magic Show at Dairy Center for the Arts

Bring out your inner child — and bring your actual child — to this family-friendly magic extravaganza at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder. The Boulder Magic Show brings Las Vegas-based magician Ben Young to the stage with his signature comedy-meets-magic act that’s perfect for families with children of all ages. Young has been seen on Penn & Teller, in casinos throughout Vegas, and has been performing for U.S. troops and their families on 80 military bases all across the world. Sept. 25, at the Grace Gamm Theater in the Dairy Arts Center, 2590 Walnut Street, Boulder. Tickets range from $15 to $20 at thedairy.org.

Lynyrd Skynyrd at Red Rocks

“When you’re a musician that’s been playing for as long as we’ve been playing, you just don’t wake up one day and say, “Okay, I’m going to put my instrument down that I’ve had this big love affair with for 50-60 years.” That’s what Lynyrd Skynyrd founding member/guitarist Rickey Medlocke had to say when Yellow Scene interviewed him in October of 2019. That being said, the iconic Southern Rock band has slowed down a bit since their heyday in the late 1970s, so make a beeline to catch them at Red Rocks on Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets start at $51 at redrocksonline.com.

Pat Metheny at Boulder Theater

To say Pat Metheny reinvented jazz guitar over the course of his career might be an understatement. He got his start at the age of 15 in the highly competitive St. Louis jazz scene and parlayed that into a career as both an incredible composer and band leader — as well as a consummate sideman with artists ranging from Ornette Coleman to Herbie Hancock to David Bowie. He’s the only musician to win no less than 20 Grammy awards across 12 different categories. Metheny comes to the Boulder Theater on Oct. 7 at 8 p.m., touring on his latest outing, Side-Eye NYC (V1.IV), (Modern Recordings, 2021) which stands near the top of an exhaustive list of albums the prolific artist has released over his illustrious 45-year career. Tickets start at $60 at bouldertheater.com.

Always a Bridesmaid at Mary Miller Theater

The Theatre Company of Lafayette finally makes its long-awaited return to the stage this fall with the show Always a Bridesmaid by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. This musical comedy tells the story of four best friends who, on the night of their senior prom, swear to be in each other’s weddings — no matter how long it takes to get there. Enjoy this relatable and hilarious tale at the historic Mary Miller Theater at 300 East Simpson in Lafayette.
Macbeth at the Dairy Arts Center

Perhaps one of the most classic spooky plays to ever grace the stage, Shakespeare’s perennial favorite Macbeth runs Oct. 14–24 at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder, presented by Upstart Crow. Enjoy the Halloween vibe with plenty of witches, spirits, and more as the title character murders King Duncan to gain control of the crown of Scotland — all at the prompting and prophecy of three witches. The performance on Saturday, Oct. 23 includes a talkback after the show with the cast and director. Tickets range from $21–$25, 2590 Walnut Street, Boulder. thedairy.org.

This Random World: The Myth of Serendipity at Louisville Arts Center

Do you ever wonder how often you travel on a perfectly parallel path with someone else without noticing? Playwright Steven Dietz asks that very question in his play This Random World: The Myth of Serendipity — now being presented by Coal Creek Theater of Louisville from Oct. 29 – Nov. 14. The story is told through the lens of an ailing woman who plans one last trip, her daughter who is planning her own great escape, and her son who has fallen prey to a prank gone wrong. It’s a funny, poignant, and intimate play that explores the truth of what may be happening just outside our own reach. Louisville Arts Center, 801 Grant Street, Louisville. cctlouisville.org.

Capturing lightning in a bottle is one of those things that pretty much never happens intentionally. And it’s hard to find a better real life example of the time-honored cliche than the story of Napoleon Dynamite, the 2004 indie comedy shot for a total budget of around $400,000 that ended up grossing more than $46 million worldwide as it rocketed to cult ultraclassic nearly overnight. Jon Heder — who played the title role — reportedly earned $1,000 on his original agreement to play the role (he later was able to re-negotiate and get a decent share of the pie). Now, more than 15 years later, Heder and Efren Ramirez (Pedro) are touring with the film, providing a talkback with audiences after the viewing. Seize this unique opportunity Jan. 25 at the Boulder Theater. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., tickets start at $35, www.bouldertheater.com for more information.

The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein at the Longmont Theatre

Enjoy the classic songs of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein when Longmont Theatre offers Some Enchanted Evening: The Songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein from Jan. 10–19, 2020. This beautiful collection of music from two of Broadway’s biggest and most prolific composers delivers all your favorites on stage at the same time. The show includes such timeless classics as “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top” from Oklahoma, “In My Own Little Corner” from Cinderella, “Sixteen Going on Seventeen” from The Sound of Music and so much more.

Tickets are $25 at www.longmonttheatre.org. Performances are at the Longmont Performing Arts Center at 513 Main Street, Longmont.

Happy Birthday, Wanda June at the Mary Miller Theater

The Theatre Company of Lafayette is presenting the Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. classic Happy Birthday, Wanda June from Feb. 14–Feb. 28. The zany comedy involves a story about a young mother whose famous adventurer husband is thought to have disappeared in the Amazon years ago. Just as two new suitors are showing her interest, her husband mysteriously returns — on his birthday. Chaos, of course, ensues. Tickets are $24 and are available online at www.tclstage.org or by calling 800.838.3006. Performances are at the Mary Miller Theater, 300 E. Simpson Street, Lafayette, CO 80026.

Mama Mia! at BDT Stage

Now playing through Feb. 22 at BDT Stage is the smash hit musical sensation Mama Mia! Based on the songs of ABBA. This jukebox musical — filled with tons of popular ABBA hits — tells the story of a young woman’s search for her birth father on a sunny and beautiful Greek island. On the day before her wedding, the young bride-to-be discovers that her father may be one of three different men, so she invites them all to her big day. Tickets range from $55 to $68 online at www.bdtstge.com or 303.449.6000. BDT Stage is located at 5501 Arapahoe Ave. in Boulder.

Ozomatli at Fox Theatre

For more than a quarter of a century, Ozomatli’s Latin rock/hip-hop/reggae/worl-fusion/funk sound has carved its own deep niche across myriad genres and social activist causes — most specifically immigration and farm workers’ rights. So their timing couldn’t be better for a stateside run, where Trump’s tarriff war and assault on immigration is simultaneously destroying thousands of families and ravaging independently owned farms across the nation. The band is performing new material — their most recent single “El Otro Lado dropped last April — and will be heading into the studio in 2020 to record their 8th studio album, so expect a solid mix of crowd favorites and as-yet unheard material at this one. Feb. 15, at the Fox Theatre, 8:30 p.m.. Tickets are $22.50, www.foxtheatre.com for more information.

Lost Dog Ensemble at Oskar Blues

Tom Waits is one of those eclectic artists you either absolutely adore and seek out every chance you get … or you don’t get him at all, nor understand anything about his music. That kind of cult status is what’s kept him shrouded in a hint of mystery throughout his career — he’s a bit of an enigmatic troubadour with a penchant for vaudevillian antics and a dark sense of humor, drenched in Americana self-deprecation. What you may not know is Colorado has its own Tom Waits tribute band called Lost Dog Ensemble, featuring frontman David Dinsmore and sax maestro Troy Thill, to name a few, who do an incredible job of sending up Waits’ unique, gravelly vocals and musical acrobatics.

Catch them Jan. 24 at Oskar Blues in Lyons, www.oskarbluesfooderies.com for more information.

Bloomsday at Dairy Center for the Arts

One of Boulder’s most popular theatre companies, Boulder’s Ensemble Theatre Company, is offering up a different look at the classic romance play. Bloomsday, by Steven Dietz, tells the story of a man named Robert who returns to Dublin to reunite with a woman who stole his heart during a literary tour 35 years ago. The show then moves backwards through time, as the older couple retraces their lives to learn more about their younger selves. It’s a time travel, love story filled with comedy and heart. Catch it Feb. 6–March 1 at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street, Boulder. Tickets are at 303-440-7826 or online at www.betc.org.

It would be easy to dismiss “Aeronaut” as just another maudlin pop ballad—complete with requisite piano-and-string accompaniment—if it weren’t for the way Billy Corgan’s trademark, pinched warble creates just enough edge to set the hook firmly in your ear. The Smashing Pumpkins frontman’s second solo outing, Ogilala (Martha’s Music/BMG, 2017) drops in October, just in time for you to discover how powerful Aeronaut ends up being, thanks in no small part to Corgan’s (billed as William Patrick Corgan on this project) collaboration with famed producer Rick Rubin.
Kessel Run at Fox Theatre

If we’re being completely honest, the only reason I’d stop to mention Kessel Run is because their name caught my eye. It the same reason I fell in love with Save Ferris 20 years ago. But Kessel Run’s no ska band —more lo-fi emo-ish—and I have no idea how many parsecs it’s going to take them to complete their journey. The “James Sunderland EP boasts, “all instruments, vocals, recording, mixing, and artwork done by sean langan,” along with the quote “just trying to make u feel stuff,” on the bandcamp page (kesselrunco.bandcamp.com), so check ‘em out at the Fox Theatre with Casino Effect and The Malai Llama on Nov. 3 at 8:30 p.m.

Return to the Twilight Zone at Theater Company of Lafayette

It is the dimension of imagination—known as The Twilight Zone—and it’s another great spooky-themed show to keep your Halloween spirit soaring all month long. The original ‘Zone aired from 1951 through 1964, and was revived again from 1985 through 1989, providing ample guest star opportunities for just about every famous name in the biz. Now, however, it’s time to catch it live. The Theater Company of Lafayette presents Return to the Twilight Zone—a parody lampooning your favorite Twilight Zone episodes, but live and on stage. Twilight Zone runs Friday and Saturday evenings from Oct. 27 through Nov. 18, with additional matinees and a few Thursday performances.

Scared Stiff

Go into the mind of a serial killer with Equinox Theatre Company’s latest drama Frozen. This powerful drama by Bryony Lavery traces the story of an English loner and the mother of one of his victims. The tie that binds them is an American academic who travels to England to research her thesis, titled “Serial Killing: A Forgivable Act?” This poetic journey explores the human capacity for forgiveness and remorse after an act that would seem to rule them out entirely. For mature audiences only. March 28 through April 19, Fri and Sat at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $15. At The Bug Theatre, 3654 Navajo Street.

La La La Los Lobos

Los Lobos crossed the Latin barrier for American rock decades before anyone else, thanks to a break out cover of Richie Valens’ “La Bamba” in 1987. A steady diet of swaggering Tex-Mex, country rock and pop—and headier Latin styles like cumbias and boleros—were the key ingredients to their enduring popularity. The band released an all-acoustic live album titled Disconnected to critical acclaim, thanks to Los Lobos’ non-stop decades of tour-polish. March 29, $35, 8:30 pm, Fox Theater, 1135 13th St., Boulder, 303.447.0095

Bard to Death

There’s no shortage of things that can go wrong with live theater—in fact, it’s that subdued hint of terror that remains a draw for performers and audiences alike. Indeed, that spirit is why Macbeth is rarely performed, thanks to a curse dating back hundreds of years. One thing that hasn’t killed a play, however, is the living dead staggering into a theater and chowing down on the cast. Until now. Thus is the underpinning of the insta-classic William Shakespeare: Land of the Dead running at the Mary Miller Theater through April 26. 300 E. Simpson St., Lafayette, 720.209.2154

Art Fest (sans hippies)

For a town that wears its Bohemian quirkiness like an Earth-toned, locally sourced, conflict-free badge of honor, you’d think Boulder Arts Week would date back at least a few decades. But as hard as it may be to believe, this is just the first year of its existence. In its inaugural year, it’s already shining new light on all the arts this town has to offer in the form of myriad exhibitions, performances, art walks, demos lectures and more. Running from March 28 – April 6, in venues all over the city.

A Picture of Health

Wellness therapy isn’t a cottage industry anymore. Nowhere is that more evident than in Colorado. The 15th Annual Taste of Therapy Wellness Fair is a great chance for the unindoctrinated to expose themselves to new modes of thinking when it comes to general health and wellness. Practitioners of every mode will be in attendance hosting sessions. Chair massages, nutritional consultations and physical therapy are some of what awaits. April 9, 9am–3pm, St. Vrain Memorial Building, 700 Longs Peak Ave., Longmont, 303.651.8394

AI

Pirates. Ninjas. Pirate ninjas. These are universally agreed upon to be the only things as cool as or cooler than robots (if you’ve got a robotic pirate ninja, you are the coolest person in the universe). Robots are awesome, and the Theater Company of Lafayette dedicated March to exploring the topic. They’ll perform seven shows that celebrate the 90th anniversary of the coining of the term “robot.” Catch both performances to see all seven shows: March 25–26, 7:30pm, Mary Miller Theater, 300 E. Simpson St., Lafayette, tclstage.org

Go East

There’s more to Asia than weird cartoons, awesome foods and microtonal music (and yes, we’re talking about the continent, not the ’80s prog rock group). The 10th Annual Asia Day festival explores all sorts of nooks and crannies of the Asian cultures with sessions on martial arts, socio-economic growth, dance, theater, calligraphy, cuisine, film and even agriculture. March 12, CU-Boulder Center for Asian Studies, 366 UCB, Boulder, colorado.edu/cas/asiaday.html

French’s Five

In honor of March’s St. Patrick’s Day, a holiday Americans happily turned into an excuse for binge drinking and parades, here are five moments that shaped Irish history.

1) Beginner’s Luck: 432: St. Patrick arrives on his mission to convert the Gaels.

2) Stroke of Luck: 795: The Vikings land in Ireland.

3) Pure Luck: 1475: The invention of shepherd’s pie.

4) Better Luck: 1769: The first barrels of Guinness were shipped to England.

5) Rotten Luck: 1845-49: The Great Famine results in the Irish mass emigration to the U.S.
