DENVER JEWS GRIEVE LOSS OF PALESTINIAN HOMES AND HOMELAND IN PUBLIC RITUAL FOR TISHA B’AV – THEIR HOLIDAY OF GRIEF

Dozens of local Jews, Palestinians, and their allies interrupt business as usual outside Union Station, creating a temporary public art exhibit memorializing Israel’s destruction of Palestinian homes and homeland.

What: Tisha B’Av is a Jewish holiday traditionally commemorating the destruction of the 2nd temple in Jerusalem thousands of years ago. It is usually observed as a somber fast day and opportunity to air and express deep grief. This year, members of Jewish Voice for Peace, Rabbis for Ceasefire, U.S. Palestinian Community Network, the Denver Jewish community, local Palestinian residents, and allies will be holding a public grief ritual and temporary art installation for Tisha B’Av.

In recognition of the 92% of homes destroyed in Gaza over the past three years, the thousands of homes destroyed in the West Bank, and the 750,000 Palestinians displaced from their homes during the 1948 Nakba, our Tisha B’Av ritual this year focuses on collectively grieving the loss of Palestinian Homes and Homeland, while drawing attention back to the ongoing genocide in Gaza and escalating ethnic cleansing in the West Bank.

In partnership with local artist Leah Bry, we will be collaboratively creating a temporary public art installation. Our ritual and art installation will invite the public into memorializing the loss of Palestinian homes and homeland as well as into a collective commitment of solidarity in defending Palestinian rights to freedom, justice, dignity, equality, and the right of return. Many will not expect to see Jews publicly grieving for and with Palestinians: we hope that our solidarity illuminates the complexity and poignancy of this solemn Jewish holiday.

Who: Denver/Boulder Jewish Voice for Peace, USPCN (the United States Palestinian Community Network), CPC (Colorado Palestine Coalition), Rabbis for Ceasefire, and more. We will bring out a multi-generational group of Colorado Jews, Palestinians, and allies across different levels of observance.

Where: Union Station, 1701 Wynkoop St., Denver, CO

Why: The Israeli government and Zionist organizations use the holiday of Tisha B’Av and the tragedy of the destruction of the Second Temple as a religious and nationalistic rallying cry to maintain and strengthen policies of apartheid and colonization of Palestinian land. We insist on reinterpreting this holiday from an ethno-nationalist desecration of a historical tragedy to a memorialization of the current and ongoing genocide in Gaza and a space for Jews, Palestinians, and allies to express our grief at the destruction and genocide in Gaza and beyond.

Media welcome: Interviews will be available with a local Jewish Rabbi, Palestinian and Jewish participants, and organizers. Visuals include video and photos of:

• An eight-foot-tall colorful, beautiful, participatory art installation, collaboratively created with a local artist RIGHT in front of Union Station – Denver’s living room and third space
• Dozens of Jewish people (some wearing prayer garb) praying, singing, chanting, tearing fabric, creating an art installation, and grieving the loss of Palestinian homes and homeland alongside Palestinians and allies
• Children, youth, adults, and elders gathering to observe Tisha B’Av in public, in hopes of drawing attention to Israel’s ongoing destruction of homes in Gaza and the escalating destruction of Palestinian homes and ethnic cleansing in the West Bank
