“The City’s Boulder Social Streets initiative dovetails beautifully with Downtown Boulder’s ongoing work and interest in creating placemaking events and activities that are free to participate in and co-created with members of the community – particularly those whose work and voices may be under-represented in the existing events and activities downtown,” said Anna Salim, vice-president of operations and programming for the Downtown Boulder Partnership.

“We are excited about this collaboration with our partners to experiment with transforming our downtown streets for additional community gathering and enjoyment,” said Natalie Stiffer, Transportation and Mobility Department director for the City of Boulder.

The city is gathering information from the community at these events, and in other ways, to learn how we can reimagine our streets. Staff will present recommendations to City Council for the future of this program by the end of 2023.

Holiday pop-up season has arrived. Whether you want to begin or end your night believing in miracles, there are two Miracle pop-ups in Boulder County this year. Last year we were awed and amazed and had our cold Grinch heart strings warmed with the warmth of the environment and libations at Miracle on Main Street in Louisville. This year BOCO adds Avanti Food & Beverage, with their Miracle on Pearl Street holiday pop-up, a part of the same Miracle family headquartered in New York.

I’m talking pop up perfection. We officially have countywide Miracles ready for your holiday enjoyment.

Making the Miracle extra special is knowing that the Louisville location, situated on the rear patio of Bittersweet Cafe, and Avanti’s Miracle on Pearl, will both be charging a $5 entry fee, of which 100% will go to local charities. This is an idea spearheaded by our friends at the Louisville location and quickly spreading. We had a chance to chat with Patrick Walsh, co-owner of Bittersweet Cafe and host of the pop-up who told us they had raised $30,000 for Louisville Rising and Community Food Share. In addition, 10% of glassware purchased is also donated via the Miracle Head office to the James Beard Foundation.

Yellow Scene popped into the media preview of Miracle on Main Street on November 18th, with a plan to visit Miracle on Pearl on the 23rd. Coincidentally, the 23rd is the same day that Louisville’s Miracle On Main Street opens to the public. Miracle on Pearl Street will open on November 24th. Mark your calendars.

Now, while I can’t speak to the decorations or environment of the Pearl Street pop-up just yet, if it’s anything like Louisville, you’re in for a treat. See these photos from the Louisville location taken by Christopher Cleary for YS.

It felt like holly jolly Saint Nick with the reds and greens and Christmas trees, while the other side is more Frosty’s Winter Wonderland. The twinkling of lights, the Christmas trees and lit up reindeer, the transparent greenhouses for individual groups while looking out to see the revelry happening around you… and there’s a massive outdoor group area for parties of 30 or more (tell your boss because it’s holiday office party season, too) were all inviting, demanding selfie sessions. We took lots of selfies.

The entirety of the miracle really warms you up – and I say that as an atheist who really doesn’t go in for Christmas stuff – both from the liquor-forward-yet-flavor-balanced offering of custom cocktails and the sudden sense of holiday harmony that overtakes you. I’m personally looking forward to more nights of sharing in the miracle. Oh, and a note, my group was there for a media night and we had too much fun. Literally. Next thing I knew we had shut the place down and were the last group. The staff were amazing throughout. They kept us happy and filled and laughed with us the whole night. We’d go back just to hang with them. Make sure you add both Miracles to your holiday plans. #BelieveInMiracles

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant Opens Temporary Location at 125 S. College Ave in Fort Collins.

The Fort Collins Rio rebuilds from July kitchen fire and opens a pop-up location on Monday, Sept. 13 to keep serving margs and TexMex cuisine to the Fort Collins community

Fort Collins, Colo. (Sept. 9 2021) – following the July 2021 kitchen fire, the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant (the Rio) is opening a temporary location at 125 S. College Ave. (Rove and Element space). The Rio will open on Monday, Sept. 13 and will be open for lunch and dinner from 11am to 10pm daily.

“We’re really excited to be able to keep serving the Fort Collins community while we renovate our W. Mountain Ave. location,” said Pat McGaughran, founder and owner of the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant. “We’re truly grateful to the firefighters who saved the historic building we’ve called home for the last 30 years and we’re looking forward to welcoming guests back inside once everything has been repaired. In the meantime, we’re grateful to be able to have this pop-up space and continue to do what we do best–bring people together over our legendary margs and tasty TexMex fare.”

The temporary Rio location will serve the same menu. Construction on the 143 W. Mountain Avenue location has commenced and is slated to re-open in Q2 2022. The restaurant will also use the closure to make improvements and renovations that are separate from the fire restoration and repair.

For questions about the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant in Fort Collins or to tour the temporary space, contact Abby Hagstrom abbylhagstrom@gmail.com.

About the Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant

Legendary margs. Tasty TexMex fare. Good people.

After many life-changing adventures through Mexico, three guys from the Gulf Coast opened the doors of the Rio in 1986 with these founding principles in mind and at heart. From that moment, it’s every single person who’s stepped through those doors that’s helped grow the tradition. It’s in the air. On every plate of food. It builds with each conversation. What started over 30 years ago, are the times still craved today in all five of the Rio’s Colorado locations (Fort Collins, Boulder, Denver, Greeley, Park Meadows).

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant offers happy hour Monday thru Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., lunch and dinner daily (times vary per location), and weekend brunch on Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Vegan-friendly and gluten-free options are also available at each location.

There has been serious concern in the film industry around the “death of cinema” for decades. The concern existed long before Netflix dropped red boxes on every corner and streaming services started popping up left and right; it worsened as traditional cinemas were forced to work around COVID restrictions. This summer one of the best ways to get out of the house, and stay COVID-safe, is the drive-in theater. It can be a family activity, a night out with friends, or a date night.

Reminder that we’re not at the necessary vaccination rate for the national population to have herd immunity, kids still can’t get the shot, and many are unable to get it, so yes, we think you should continue to be safe.

Drive-In Theaters

Drive-in theaters are unique in that they nearly died out. Their heyday was back in the 1950’s and 60’s and now very few are left. The ones that do remain are typically struggling to make ends meet. Nevertheless, they offer double or even triple features for less than the cost of a standard movie theater ticket. They have snack bars that they encourage people to visit because that is where they generate most of their revenue, which they need to remain open. Currently, there are six permanent drive-in theaters remaining in Colorado.

Located in Commerce City, 88 Drive-In is the last original drive-in left in the Denver metro area. This drive-in has been around since 1972 and family-owned since 1976. They screen triple features for $10 and children (under 12) are free. The building that houses the snack bar and projector has the Batman logo painted on the side, just one of the little things that adds to the place’s overall charm. In addition to their large selection of food options at the snack bar, they also offer t-shirts and light up toys. What kiddo wouldn’t love a souvenir? Even if they fall asleep part way through the movie.

Fort Collins is home to the Holiday Twin Drive-In Theater, which has not one but two screens to play features on. Each screen offers different features to choose from. One screen is typically more child friendly while the other is for adults. They only charge $9 for adults and $6 for children (aged six to nine) and seniors (65 and up). While all of the drive-ins have Facebook pages, Holiday Twin also has an Instagram and a Twitter so you don’t miss any updates.

Tru Vu in Delta is partnered with Egyptian Theaters, a traditional cinema. They charge $8.50 per vehicle with an additional $3 fee per person in the vehicle. The additional fee can then be redeemed at the snack bar.

The Star Drive-In is located in Montrose and boasts the lowest prices of all the drive-ins at just $8.50 for adults, $6.50 for seniors (60 and over), and children (11 and under) are free. This drive-in has been family-owned for 72 years and their mantra is, “See the stars, under the stars, at the Star.”

Mesa Drive-In in Pueblo goes all out with three screens playing different films. Adults are $10, children (12 and under) are free, and seniors (62 plus) are $7.00. Unlike most of the other drive-ins, Mesa has yet to open this year or announce an expected opening date.

Comanche Drive-In is in Buena Vista. $10 for adults, $5 for children (5-12), and free for small children (5 and under). At this drive-in, concert recordings are screened as well as movies.

Pop Up Drive-Ins

The Dairy Arts Center in Boulder is offering a popular new iteration of the outdoor drive-in. They will be regularly hosting pop-up screening events throughout the summer. Unlike the permanent commercial drive-ins that play mainstream Hollywood offerings, the Dairy will screen experimental films for all the art nerd cinephile, indie lovers. The cost to attend is $25 and tickets must be purchased in advance, but these are films you are unlikely to come across anywhere else.

COVID-weary attendees can rest assured, the Dairy Arts Center started their drive-in events as a response to COVID and designed their safety requirements during the height of restrictions.

Film on the Rocks is in Morrison in the lower parking lot of the legendary Red Rocks amphitheater. The price is $59.50 per car, but Coca-Cola, popcorn, and candy are included. They will be showing old favorites throughout the summer. Think of the most amazing outdoor movie experience ever, then make it cooler by throwing Red Rocks and the gorgeousness of the area – including Colorado skies – up all around you.

Food and Flick Fridays in Firestone is not only fun to say five times fast, but fun to attend. At this venue, the party starts at 6:30 with food trucks, activities, and games until dusk when the screening begins. This event takes place on the third Friday of the month. There will be a drive-in screening on September 17 of “Ferris Buller’s Day Off.” In the months before then, the screening is “movie in the park” style. Bring blankets, folding chairs, and whatever else you need to make yourself comfortable in the park to see some old favorites for free.

Home Projectors and Projector Rentals

For even more privacy and the ability to screen a movie of your choice, projectors are available for purchase or rental. There are many projector options depending on your budget, indoor vs outdoor viewing, and image size and quality. Our editor has one in his bedroom – fancy guy – and he has friends that host outdoor flicks in their yards. Once, he recalls, he watched the Game of Thrones finale in the backyard with Ann Theis, former head of Open Media Denver, with friends and family.

Record-A-Hit is a company that rents out various attractions for private parties. One of the rental options is a 28 foot inflatable movie screen. They have people who set up the screen, the projector, and the sound system up for you, so no knowledge of how the equipment functions is necessary. They can be contacted via their website for a quote. They have a popcorn machine and supplies available, as well, so there’s no skimping out on the theater experience if you want to have a larger, yet still socially distanced, gathering.

Mike’s Camera offers projector and screen rentals as well. They have 50 and 70-foot screens to choose from and two different projectors. You can feel good about this purchase knowing you are supporting a small, locally owned business.

Final Thought

Movies with friends and families on the big screen is a sure way to enjoy a summer evening and keep cinema culture alive. How better to see a superhero film than with a breeze on your face? Or a romance under the stars? Colorado drive-ins can provide that and more may pop up as the summer progresses.

Enjoy 90 minutes of tasty craft cocktails and gnarly ski lodge grub. The venue is adorned in kitschy holiday decor providing a sense of nostalgia for the grown folk and a hot tub time machine trip for the younger folks.

The unusual drinking destination provides an array of unique cocktails to get you warmed up this Colorado winter. Some of the signature cocktails include the “Sex on the Snow” featuring a lavender and butterfly pea flower-infused gin, lemon, prosecco, VSOP cognac, and garnished with a candied lemon peel. Or get your taste buds on the “Double Black Diamond”, which features a charcoal-infused mezcal and solera rum. The drink processes a grey hued ice cube paired with a blackberry preserve that really plays on both the sweet and smoky tones of the pallet.

Dive right into the “Shred The Gnar” cocktail. It features a combination of Oak aged Nova Fogo Cachaca, Hell-Fire Bitters, Kaffir Leaf-infused Shoshu, and lime juice, topped with a tasty candied ginger garnish. We also recommend the “Fresh Pow” cocktail. This refreshing tropical drink is made up of Shipwreck coconut rum, silver tequila, key lime juice, agave syrup, triple sec, and a sugar coconut rim.

Not much of a drinker? Not a problem!

APRESKE has mocktails for your sipping pleasure. Some of the mocktails include concoctions like the “Ski School” which is a mixture of lemon juice, cinnamon, clove, honey, and ginger. There is also the “Like a Virgin”, which is a combination of berry puree, sour mix, and cranberry juice and “fishnet glove” fashion a la Madonna.

Once you’ve gotten your buzz on chow down on one of the many culinary creations listed on the APRESKE menu. The vegan veggie chili is a sure fire way to warm yourself up during the chilliest February evenings. Pair your pippin’ hot chili with some house-made carnitas for the perfect Dy-no-mite! duo. The giant charcuterie stuffed pretzel is an impressive foot across and is chop full of meat, cheese, spiced nuts, and fresh fruit. No matter what you choose, you definitely can’t lose.

No matter what you are munching or sipping on you are sure to leave with a warm body, a full stomach, and an enjoyable buzz. With support from Ferrari Champagne and an official 80’s USA Ski Team car parked outside, you’ll be hitting the memories hard as you toss another quarter in the Ms. Pac-Man on loan from Tilt Arcade and tossing back another lovely libation.
