Coloradans talk about what they love and what has changed about the state in their lifetime

Over the past few decades, more people have flocked to Colorado: first for the outdoors, then legalized marijuana, then for the booming tech industry. Each rush brought changes and growth. However, a rare breed, the born and raised Coloradan, has remained to witness the changes.

Several of these locals took time to discuss the changes in the state, what they love, the growing pains, and everything in between.

Colorado is well-rounded with the glorious Rocky Mountains to the west and the rolling plains to the east. Despite being landlocked, it boasts natural lakes and waterfalls hidden in the crevices of the mountains. It became clear very quickly that the natural environment is what keeps Coloradans here and continuously brings them back. 

“People are drawn to Colorado because they love nature. I think it’s something that unites people,” Jennah Synnestvedt explained. 

As the population increases, the environment changes, and the political climate polarizes, Coloradans remain strong in their unwavering pride for the state. Most agree that Colorado is still special with its hidden gems and versatility. Like Trinity Jacobs put it, “You appreciate different sparks,” as the state evolves.

She spoke warmly about memories of visiting Steamboat Springs, hiking a 14er this year, and going to Elitches. She said that regardless of the area’s quick expansion, “It feels like home. Everybody’s very united, very close.”

“Everything I like doing is here. I get a little bit of outdoor activities. I get the city vibes. I get out in the countryside. Colorado is a state that has a little bit of everything for everyone. You have to go out of your way and look for that spark now, but its there.”

Trevor Klaus, Lafayette

Klaus reflected on the memories he has with his family in the outdoors. After being, as he put it, dragged outside by his mom and experiencing things like camping in the Sand Dunes, he gained an appreciation for the nature that Colorado has to offer. He spoke passionately about the national and state parks here, saying that he hopes we take care of them for future generations.

“If they start messing with them, the environment will get worse. I think the parks are the biggest part of Colorado.” 

Kristen Coats, Longmont

Coats has watched Longmont’s population climb and appreciates the different personalities that have joined the mix. She values the creativity that shines here and the ways that the community has come together to back one another in their crafts.

“I love the hospitality, the creativity, and the willingness to explore new possibilities. We’re open to supporting the community and talking about important subjects without always fighting about it, which is really cool. In other places you can voice an opinion and get shot down, but we actually talk about it. We go through it in depth.”

Ky Pettie, Denver

Growing up in Pueblo and then attending CU Boulder gave Pettie a unique look into the similarities between the communities. Even though the cities are almost 150 miles apart, he said, “The sense of community between Coloradans has remained the same. We all kind of get each other.”

He expanded on the sense of togetherness Colorado has, saying, “Politically, there’s a lot of safeguards in place for people to be free. It’s a great thing that people would want to come to Colorado for those things – to be in a safe area.”

Roedel grew up in Fort Lupton before attending Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction and recently returning north. He spoke optimistically about the future of Colorado and hopes that we maintain spaces where human connection is possible. 

“I’d love to see the arts and the culture and the connection preserved, which is of extreme importance as we move into the future and as humanity changes a little bit.”

“The energy is still very adventurous. I do think there’s just this feeling within Colorado that you don’t really see in other states. There are all the natural landmarks that are here and remain in our history. Red Rocks, for example, is one of those places that will always be that destination. It’s not going to change in my lifetime. There are those traditional things that will be always here that make it a really cool state.”

Tyler Hinrichs, Broomfield

Hinrichs also vouched for the mountains being one of Colorado’s main selling points. He was outspoken about his love for the open space that the state has to offer and named the natural environment as his reason for remaining in Colorado. 

“It’s the natural environment, the views. The mountains are just marvelous. You can see from anywhere really and just being able to look at them is what’s special about Colorado. Being able to go into them and ski and hike and whatnot is what really makes Colorado special,” he said. 

Jadyn S, Westminster 

Schelir and her fiancé spent most of their lives in Fort Collins. She shared her love of Colorado proudly and gave us a small glimpse into the memories they’ve created. She highlighted how much more there is to the state than its typical stereotypes. 

Even though she’s lived here her entire life, she laughed about how she hasn’t visited all of the Colorado staples.

“There’s so much I haven’t seen, but I can tell you where to get a cinnamon roll that’ll blow your mind on the way to Estes Park. It’s the random, little things that you know people who aren’t from here can’t relate to.”

Jacobs has lived in several regions of Colorado and experienced the differences between communities. She made it clear that she loves the state even with its nuances, saying that she hopes we continue to keep “all of it” alive and exciting. 

“It’s just such a cool state. Politically, it’s great, and I’m very comfortable with a lot of the areas I’m in. I like the protections with laws and I appreciate the community. There are a lot of kind-hearted souls here and it’s a beautiful state.” 

Samantha Clark, Colorado Springs

Clark has lived her whole life in Colorado Springs with memories of climbing the Manitou Springs incline and gaining some scars from falling down the bar trail. She hopes for more spaces where people can come together recreationally while acknowleged “the magic that Colorado offers” with its variety. 

“I’m all here for diversity and I think if we could have more people that look different and come from different walks of life, there are always positives in that.”

Jennah Synnestvedt, Lafayette

Synnestvedt moved back to Colorado from New York in 2010, saying, “The mountains called me back.” She explained that the outdoors and diversity were important factors in her decision to return. 

“The population increase has put more people in nature, so it’s more taxing on the land, but it’s also brought some more creativity, innovation, and technology here. It is a sanctuary state too, where it’s friendly to people of different backgrounds.”

Justice Humphrey, Northglenn

Experiencing the four seasons and optimism have kept Humphrey here for her entire life. She spoke about her love for the diversity in Colorado and hopes that we protect that facet of the state. Her openness to the change – while still preserving our history – was inspiring.

“We have a lot of people moving here who are liberal and all on the same page. As a kid, everything was very different, and I see things from a different point of view now. I’ve grown, and the city has grown differently, and it’s making new changes.”

Mark Cavanaugh, Denver

Cavanaugh has 60 years of sentimental memories in Colorado and seemingly infinite stories about how the state has evolved. His love was clear in our over-30-minute conversation, filled with memories of Denver ramping up and suddenly exploding with people. 

He values the essence of his home state, saying, “Colorado embodies the spirit of the American West. It’s a place where you can remake yourself or become whatever it is you want to be, rather than what you’re supposed to be or what you think you’re trapped to be.”

“We welcome all. It is shaped like a big welcome mat and we welcome people. That’s true Colorado spirit. We have always been a very welcoming and tolerant state.” 

Rita Kendrick, Louisville

Kendrick and her family settled down in Colorado after moving to California twice. As an educator, she values the state’s history – both its achievements and harms – and passing the culture down to future generations. She spoke about the nostalgia of visiting places like 16th Street Mall, Casa Bonita, and Frisco and being able to share those places with her children. 

“I think a lot of  has to do with the outdoors. The outdoor environment, the mountains, being able to ski, being able to hike. I hope that we don’t continue to build, and build, and build, and lose that character of the mountains. Lose the wilderness. Lose the animals. The scenery is beautiful. And the lifestyle – we’re laid back.”

Lena Wenzel, Louisville 

Lena Wenzel, Louisville

Wenzel’s parents settled down in a farmhouse in Louisville in the late 60s. She spoke fondly of her memories rollerskating at Wheels, eating at the LA Diner, and participating in the Pearl Street Mall Crawl. Despite moving across the world to Morocco and integrating into a completely different culture, Wenzel came back to Colorado. 

“I guess I had to go all the way across the world to understand how important this place is to me,” she said. “I do feel very safe here. It’s a bubble, but I enjoy my bubble.”

Living just blocks away from the 2021 Marshall Fire gave Wenzel a deeper gratitude for Colorado and the community that has been built. She is still in proximity to her childhood friends and old restaraunt owners. Even with the “urban sprawl” and commercialization of the area, she has roots in Louisville. She and her partner volunteer at the Louisville Historical Museum and own The Aristrocrat Studios.

Kristen Wells-Wrasman, Englewood

Kristen Wells-Wrasman, 34, was born in the highest incorporated town in the United State, Leadville. After attending Colorado College on a full scholarship, she left the state briefly to get her PhD from Stanford University, before returning to settle down in Englewood. She explains,  “The biggest, obvious change in Colorado is ski traffic.” Wells-Wrasman, an avid hiker, also notes, “fires and parasites [mountain pine beetle] have really changed the Colorado forests as well.”

Sandee Miller, Leadville

Sandee Miller, 72 is a second-generation Coloradan, coming from a family of Mexican immigrants who fled to Colorado Springs when Pancho Villa took control in Mexico. For her, there have been many changes, also citing the growth of cities. Additionally, she mentions shopping as a major change, “When I was young, you went to shops downtown. Kids would meet there with kids from other parts of the west side, north end etc. Then malls were popular. Now I never think of going to a mall. Grocery stores were a place to get necessities. There were more independent grocers. Many in converted houses in neighborhoods. Even then many were kinda funky. Not that fresh. You would just walk to these neighborhood stores like the Egg House in Colorado Springs. Now grocery stores are shopping adventures. 

Amanda Slater, Louisville

Amanda Slater, 39 was born and raised in Broomfield, Co. After a brief stint in Montana, she settled with her family in Louisville. An avid outdoor enthusiast, Slater has spent a fair amount of time skiing, cycling, and hiking around the state. “Suburban sprawl and traffic are the biggest changes I have seen.” While Slater doesn’t mind the additional enthusiasm for the state, the recent growth has made some big changes in the Boulder Valley.

Alisandra Gulic, Eagle

Alisandra Guilic, 35 has spent her life in the Vail Valley, living on a family ranch and working in childcare. In her time living and working in the mountains, she has seen the area change.

Spotlight: Q&A Backstage with The Brook and The Bluff 

A conversation on their new album, upcoming tour and their Red Rocks debut

Many artists spend decades hoping to play a show at Red Rocks. The Brook and the Bluff got the show musicians spend their careers chasing for two sold-out nights—on just a week’s notice.

“This is literally the one stage that everyone who is doing what we’re doing wants to be on,” guitarist Alec Bolton said.

The Alabama-grown band is known for energetic performances and groovy sets, having toured with Mt. Joy, Ashe, and Rainbow Kitten Surprise. Yellow Scene Magazine (YS) sat down backstage with the band between their Colorado shows to discuss the Red Rocks debut, their upcoming album, and headliner tour

YS: Tell me about your first Red Rocks appearance – you must be coming off a high from last night.

Joseph Settine (lead vocals): We only had a week’s notice – it has been a whirlwind, really crazy. 

Alec Bolton (guitarist): It was yesterday and I still don’t really know how I feel about it. We keep seeing videos and saying ‘woah we did that!’ We were more nervous for that show than we have been in a while because of the gravity of the occasion. 

YS: What is your relationship with Mt. Joy and how has it grown over the years?

Settine: We toured with them in 2022 and bonded fast. They’re so generous – they bring us on stage all the time. Now we’ll even swap records when we’re making them.

Bolton: When they came through Birmingham, Sam texted Joseph and I asking if we wanted to come on stage since it was our hometown. 

YS: You have a busy schedule coming up – what are you looking forward to?

John Canada (drums): We purposefully didn’t tour so that we could focus on making an album, writing together, and recording. I feel like now we’re ready to really get back to touring and excited about our shows with the Avett Brothers. Red Rocks is a nice way to warm back up. 

YS: Tell us a little bit about the new album and the creative process.

Settine: We made a record that is like a live show. Our first three were much more crafting in the studio. For this one, we walked into the studio with everything ready. We played the songs hundreds of times before we even walked in. The goal was to have the same energy that we have playing on stage transfer to the record.

Bolton: There was more attention to the band as a whole – songs that would serve us as a group.

Canada: We got together every day for three months. Joseph would bring plenty of bangers, Alec would show us guitar riffs he wrote at 2 AM, and then me and Kevin would add our musicality. It was a cool process of building songs from the ground.

YS: On your latest EP, there’s melodies and riffs that had been in the works for years. Does the album include any old ideas or are they all fresh?

Settine: This is the first one where it’s all fresh. The EP was almost like closing that chapter.

YS: Would you say there is a theme throughout the new album?

Kevin Canada (keyboard): This is the most energetic album yet, which is going to be amazing for touring. After our shows, everyone always says ‘oh my gosh, the energy was much more elevated than the studio record.’ But now I think the studio record is going to set a new standard for the energy.

YS: I have to ask – do you have any special memories particularly in Colorado?

Settine: Obviously our first Red Rocks. I also think about our headline sets. Every time we come to Colorado, the shows are always memorable because everyone loves live music here – so much energy.

Canada: I remember a fan in Fort Collins handed out colorful hearts. During the show everyone held them up with phone lights. It looked so cool.

Settine: I keep one in my wallet.

Canada: We have had a lot of great shows in Colorado. But I remember one of the very first shows we did in Colorado was a So Far Sound show on Halloween at a house. We were new to touring, probably seven or eight years ago. We had no Halloween costumes, so we were all wearing potato sacks.From that to all the theaters we played along the way – Blue bird, the Ogden, the Boulder Theater – all the way to Red Rocks has been a sweet journey.

The band brought their famed high energy – this time with wheelies and flame throwers.

American rock band Cage the Elephant took the Red Rocks stage on September 18th in their typical electrifying fashion — this time with a thrilling, potentially hazardous display of wheelies and flame throwers.

Band members Matt Shultz (vocals), his older brother Brad Shultz (rhythm guitar), Nick Bockrath (lead guitar), Matthan Minster (guitar, keyboards), Daniel Tichenor (bass), and Jared Champion (drums) are known for putting on a show. Frontman Schultz’s eccentric performances have historically included stripping down to his underwear and fishnet tights, so he addressed the other “elephant in the room.”

 “Captain obvious here – I broke my foot.”

He promised the crowd it would not hinder his performance, and the crowd’s affirmative roar after each song confirmed that. Schultz did not hesitate to perform wheelies, using the scooter as more of a stage prop than a health-care necessity. Fans fed off his high energy, cheering him on and encouraging him to use the Red Rocks stage as his personal skate park.

Schultz continued to engage the crowd throughout the evening with a vulnerability that quieted the crowd.

“I’ve had some rough years for 5 years…as everyone did,” Schultz said. “If you see someone struggling, don’t be afraid to tell them you love them.”

Fans cheered in agreement, many knowing about the band’s struggles and the meaning behind the band’s release of their most personal album to date, Neon Pill. Schultz has explained that the album – specifically its title track, Neon Pill – is about his struggle with psychosis after being prescribed a pill for his ADHD. 

Schultz explained in an interview with the New York Times that at the time he wrote the song, he was convinced someone was tampering with his medicine in an attempt to poison him. His paranoia was extreme — to the point that he divorced his wife, Eva, later remarrying her, and in 2023 was arrested under illegal gun possession charges. 

The arrest marked a turning point that saved his life. 

Now back to releasing music after their 5-year hiatus, Cage the Elephant is on a global tour. They brought openers Bakar, Girl Tones, and Willow Avalon to Red Rocks.

The band closed out the evening with nothing but continued high energy and gratitude for their fans. 

“Thank you for making space for us in our life. It’s a big deal to make space in your heart for something, so we really appreciate it,” said Schultz.

Modest Mouse @ Mission Ballroom

Washington-born band, Modest Mouse, is coming to Mission Ballroom on November 11th to share some of its best-known tunes. $1 from each purchased ticket will be donated to charity. Doors open at 7:00 pm, and the show starts at 8:00pm. Tickets can be purchased for people aged 16 and up, and they start at $68.92. Visit Mission Ballroom.

Béla Fleck Plays Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue @ Colorado Symphony Orchestra  

Banjo master Béla Fleck will sit in the spotlight with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra to play George Gershwing’s Rhapsody in Blue on November 16th and 17th at 7:30 pm and 1:00 pm respectively. The classic work turned 100-years-old this year, which is one reason why Fleck aims to explore this particular tune. Tickets can be purchased at Colorado Symphony. They start at $12.80 a piece.

Fiddler on the Roof @ Jesters Dinner Theatre

Fiddler on the Roof tells the story of a milkman, and his five daughters in a pre-revolutionary Russian town. The musical navigates traditional values and anti-semitism amidst a changing climate. Beginning at the end

In addition to crediting his wife Liz for much of their collective success, Kenny Vasko often talked about musicians as human beings. Adaptability and accommodation are key components to the success of their record studio, Dog House Music Studio. One could argue that’s why Dog House has solidified itself as a mainstay in Lafayette, with the performance space “The End” serving as a musical nest for about seventy patrons to enjoy live shows. The Vaskos love to give back. From open mics to “Women’s Jam,” The End allows Lafayette to celebrate the art of music and the people who make it. This love comes from a genuine place that carried them through a very tough time in their lives.

The ordinary world

The first stage of the hero’s journey is meant to set up a point of contrast. The “known” or “ordinary world” is a simple and traditional life grounded in real world expectations such as in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” where Frodo loves hanging around, reading, and eating under hills and trees while playing pranks. These ideals are comparable to a small town or suburb where life is meant to be seen as quaint, easy, and expected. Then, within a way too short of time, he’s called to meet elves, dwarves, and men to fight orcs, trolls, and balrogs — things he’d only ever heard of in stories.

Kenny Vasko’s story started on this same spoke of the hero’s journey cycle:

“Let’s go down memory lane here. Like everyone else that went to college, I was in a band. I was the frontman. I was the high energy low talent guy that would get the crowd going. It was awesome. It was friendships I still have. Then I graduated and I got my first paycheck from a tax software company and was like, ‘Oh great! I can let these dreams die.’”

Becoming a Certified Public Accountant was a surprising fit as Vasko is an extroverted person in an introverted industry. But Vasko was a facilitator. “I’d start to make a name for myself in that way. I wasn’t the person working on a spreadsheet until three in the morning. But, I would be on the phone making sure the client was happy with what we were doing. It was good for me career wise, but I did feel like a square peg in a round hole from an emotional standpoint.”

The call

In the cycle of storytelling, there is something that pulls the protagonist away from the known world. Sadly, for Vasko, the call came with an unexpected tragedy:

“My wife and I got married in 2016, and about a week after we got back from our honeymoon, my mother found out that she had cancer. We didn’t know how long she had to live… like a month after I got married, my wife agreed to move to a small town as opposed to the Denver-Boulder-metropolitan area. And, that experience really changed us both professionally. My wife was an urban planner. She has a master’s degree. It’s something that she’s always wanted to do and after the experience of loss when my mother did pass away just a few months later, it really did drive home the point that tomorrow is not promised today.”

When they went back to work they both decided that it didn’t feel right, so they quit their jobs at the same time. Vasko took on the tax books of friends and family to keep afloat financially. He unexpectedly found himself with over one hundred clients and in desperate need of an office. “We were looking through different websites of real estate for lease or whatever then we saw this building for sale, it comes with a music studio.” Vasko likened this discovery to accepting the invitation to peruse the dessert menu. “Yeah, we’ll take a look at the menu.”

What the Vasko family discovered when digging into the details was this was a space rented by about 70 or so musicians. However, once they started to get a vision of what the place could be, they were informed that it was set to be demolished. Initially, they had accepted defeat. But, “Then we took a good long look in the mirror and thought, ‘let’s try and save it. What did we have to lose?’”

With a little finagling, they convinced the initial buyer, who had the rights site unseen, to come and look at the space so he would have a clear understanding of what he would be taking away from the community. “He flew in from Hawaii and within a couple weeks was like, ‘Oh man. I made a mistake. Do you want it?’” From there it was off to the banks in a mad dash search of a loan. That chapter of the story ended on 525 Courtney Way, Lafayette, and they’ve been adding pages to this day.

Crossing the threshold, assembling a crew 

Along with the studio came an inheritance of a mad scientist’s lab. “When we bought it, it looked like a guitar center threw up in it. It was the old owner’s old projects. A lot of stuff that might have worked in the seventies or eighties that no longer worked.” Since then they have renovated a whole wing, got a liquor license, put a music venue in the back, and now serve about six hundred musicians a year.

It wasn’t done by the Vaskos alone. Much like the Fellowship from “Lord of the Rings” or the Straw Hat Pirates from “One Piece,” they knew they’d need a crew. “My wife and I were the first employees. And, after about a month of working seven days a week, we were like ‘this is not sustainable.’” Which set them out on a quest to find a crew. Vasko made sure to shout out his lead engineer and part owner, John Remington, first. “He has an amazing bedside manner with musicians. He understands their motivations and their challenges. He runs the recording studio.” Krista, the studio manager, showed the Vaskos that music fans can make the best employees despite any blank spaces on a resume. “We found that music supporters can be better catered to be employees at spaces like this as opposed to musicians. Krista has a customer service background. All the soft skills she possesses cannot be taught. She manages the studio on a day-to-day basis. Then also does sound checks and audio engineering.”

Kenny Vasko lamented that for a time he had leaned on unpaid internships to help with the workload, but has since found a way to make the internship a paid position. “They were all unpaid for college credit. And, we started feeling really guilty about it, to be honest. Now we just got a seed donation to do paid internships which is somewhat unheard of in the music industry. We established a non-profit called “Rock for the People.” The non-profit’s mission is to create those paid opportunities or marketing tools that people need to succeed in the music industry from historically underrepresented communities. For instance, less than five percent of audio engineers are women — and even less than that are women of color — so my wife and I feel like we have a mission to make sure that the future of music isn’t all old white straight dudes.”

The ordeal

The Lafayette Music Festival has grown in notoriety over the years; however, getting support for the event was earned through perseverance and hard work. And, one can’t have a hero’s story without a trial. For the Vaskos, it started with the COVID outbreak in 2020. “We never really hosted a show. We’ve never hosted a ticketed show before. We were only a year and some change into owning the building. It sold out! It was an amazing evening…We were like we can do this.” Then COVID hit.

Not to be deterred, the Vaskos pivoted to live-streaming, something Kenny likened to the portals created by Doctor Strange from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They knew they had to do whatever was in their power to keep the doors open. “You’re doing the long game when doing anything based on partnerships. Most partnerships are a long game, it takes a long time to build trust. We called a lot of people when we wanted to do the festival and they were like ‘That all sounds great. Call us when you’re in year two?”

Then Vaskos followed suit. They called in year two and got more people on board. Then they had people call them for year three. “Now this is the first year that we have gained enough sponsors and partner venues that even if not another ticket is sold, we’ll be able to pay all the artists. But, that took three years of doing a lot of volunteer work.”

Sharing of boons

Dog House Music Studios is one of the largest in the area with a twenty-three studio complex. The space is accommodating enough that when the artist Babyface came through for the former mayor’s inauguration, Doghouse accommodated his multi-faceted needs.

Further, as a studio, the Vaskos make sure that the mission of aiding and helping musicians is at the center of everything they do:

“We’re very hands-on about everything. Musicians are human beings. On one hand, we have younger musicians who are very talented but are trying to find their way to booking shows or getting music recorded we consult with them. We help them do marketing. Get their stuff on Spotify. We also host open mics and songwriters circles… One of our major tenets is that every musician has a different definition of success. Some musicians want to play Red Rocks and that’s a different path [than] some musicians who want to play Tom Petty covers to [their] friends four times a year at [their] favorite bar.”

So much of Kenny Vasko’s message was about stewardship, service, and giving back to the community. “I am nothing without other people. I just want to get that across that like any small business or any independent organization, it truly is the bond that you have with those folks.  That really makes everything shine.”

When I asked Kenny about his final thoughts, he brought up his wife, Liz. He mentioned again how she was with him through the toughest time in his life. She co-captained the ship that would become Doghouse Music and is the star of fostering care for the musical arts. The way he spoke of her was reminiscent of a Buddhist sutra on solitude and companionship, “If you gain a companion, one who is worthy of intertwining their soul with your own then you shall overcome all dangers. Let your heart rejoice and go with them.”

Anthony Jeselnik at the Paramount Theatre

One of the most unique talents in standup comedy today, Anthony Jeselnik has carved out a space for himself with a brand of humor that treats wildly taboo and offensive topics with a penchant for unexpected shocks in his stoically deadpan delivery. It’s the kind of act where you’ll leave, shaking your head, muttering to yourself, “I can’t believe I laughed at that,” and also knowing you’ll never be able to deliver one of his jokes at the office water cooler because you simply won’t pull it off like he does — and as such, you’d earn yourself a trip to your HR department for a reprimand. But Jeselnik really does find the funny in the places none of us would ever think to look, and that’s something that takes a true genius. You Enjoy Myself at Dairy Center for the Arts

When an Instagram post directs six strangers to a secluded Vermont farmhouse, a magical night full of camaraderie and shared emotions takes place — as does a quirky, feel-good piece of theater making its debut in Boulder. Thanks to Local Theater Company, you can catch You Enjoy Myself, a premiere play written by Topher Payne and directed by Betty Hart. The story is explores the cyclical nature of love — the beginning, end and renewal. Sept. 23 through Oct. 13 at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder. Million Dollar Quartet at Candlelight Dinner Playhouse

The hit Broadway jukebox musical Million Dollar Quartet is coming to Candlelight Dinner Playhouse from Sept. 21 through Nov. 12. This Tony Award-nominated musical tells the story of when Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Elvis Presley came together at Sun Records in Memphis for one of the greatest jam sessions to ever take place. It’s a legendary December night filled with a poignant story of promises, secrets and betrayal. Neuron Forest at Dairy Center for the Arts

Local artist Katie Caron is the Chair of Studio Art and Head of Ceramics and 3D Design at Arapahoe Community College. She’s also showing a compelling new exhibit at the Dairy Center for the Arts titled Neuron Forest. This multi-dimensional visual collection is inspired by the neurons in human brains. From the artist statement: “I am struck by their visual movement, how they creep as they change form and communicate through neural pathways. These neural circuits interconnect to one another to form a large-scale brain network, creating human consciousness, identity, life as we know it.” Her work is on display through Nov. 11. Frame of Reference at Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art

Another local artist showcasing an impressive collection is Boulder-based Amy Metier, whose new exhibit, Frame of Reference will be on display at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art at Frasier through Nov. 29. Metier is a painter and former art professor at Metro State University. Her abstract paintings have been displayed in the Denver Art Museum, Ballinglen Museum of Art in Ireland, as well as private collections throughout the United States and Europe. This is just one stop on her exhibition tour that includes upcoming stops in Ireland and the William Havu Gallery in Denver. But you can catch this work first in Boulder. Making a Mountain at Dairy Center for the Arts

Since mid-July, visitors to the Dairy Center for the Arts visual galleries have been sewing a mountain. Making a Mountain is an interactive installation which asked the community to come together to sew while sharing stories and building out a large-scale installation made from pink and orange tulle. The tulle comes together, eventually forming the mountain – and will stay up through September 9. The artist, Ana María Hernando, uses femininity and empathy to make the invisible visible and to question our own preconceptions of worth and value. Janelle Monáe at Red Rocks

In 2010 Janelle Monáe burst into American consciousness with her first studio album, The ArchAndroid (Bad Boy Records). Thanks to her appearance on fun.’s hit single, “We Are Young” in 2011, which was certified diamond of the RIAA, she was able to carve out a space as a household name and parlay that into incredible follow-up releases, The Electric Lady (Bad Boy Records/Atlantic, 2013) and Dirty Computer (Boy Records/Atlantic, 2018) — the latter of which earned her a Grammy Nomination for Album of the Year. Now touring on her 2023 outing, The Age of Pleasure (Atlantic), a genius collection of slick, soulful pop/reggae tunes, Monáe comes to Red Rocks on Sept. 7. The Tempest at Dairy Center for the Arts

The Upstart Crow Theater Company is bringing one of The Bard’s most beloved works to the stage. Running Sept. 7–17 is William Shakespeare’s The Tempest – the story of an exiled, single father left alone to float in the ocean with only his daughter and his vengeance. So that everyone may enjoy the power of Shakespeare, Upstart Crow has also announced two name-your-price nights – Thursday Sept. 7 and 14. The Curious Savage at Theatre Company of Lafayette

Head to Lafayette for a fun, comedic production titled The Curious Savage, which runs Sept. 22–Oct. 7 at the Theatre Company of Lafayette. It tells the story of Ethel P. Savage, an older woman who has recently lost her husband, though he left her $10 million. While her stepchildren have her committed to a sanatorium in hopes of securing the fortune for themselves, Mrs. Savage meets a variety of misfits who help her to establish a fund to support others. Nuns of Brixton/Reptiles and Samurai at the Oriental Theater

It’s been more than two decades since Oingo Boingo broke up and more than three since The Clash ended their run, yet both bands remain beloved by legions of fans — many of whom weren’t even alive when they were active. Seeing them perform their material live on stage isn’t possible but the Oriental Theater is presenting the next best thing, thanks to Colorado-based tribute bands Reptiles and Samurai and The Nuns of Brixton. Both bands are considered legit powerhouses in the tribute band scene in the Centennial State, and both absolutely slay when it comes to performing the music of the original incarnations of the bands they pay homage to. Seeing this incredible music performed live by top-notch musicians is a must. Catch the one-night-only show at the Oriental Theater in Denver on Sept. 15. Various exhibits at Arvada Center for the Arts

The Arvada Center frequently hosts compelling exhibits in its many art galleries throughout the impressive facility. Running Sept. 14–Nov. 12 is an entire series focused on Southern Colorado, with three different exhibits. The Main Gallery will feature Emilio Lobato A Mi Manera – A 40 Year Survey, which weaves together the artist’s themes of loneliness and culture in Southern Colorado. The Upper Gallery will host Latitude 37°, showcasing Colorado’s unique history through a group exhibit featuring artists living within the 37th parallel. Lastly, in the Theatre Gallery, is Colcha Embroidery of the San Luis Valley with a variety of stitch embroidery techniques highlighted by Southern Colorado artisans with pieces on loan from History Colorado. June 11: Stafford Hunter and Jazz Explorations

Recently relocated to Colorado, Trombonist Stafford Hunter was described in glowing terms by AllAboutJazz.com: “Yes, the (trombone)has its shortcomings, yet in the case of Hunter.. the musician does not. July 1: Flobots

Homegrown hip-hop darlings the Flobots make their Levitt Pavilion debut on the tail-end of their popular United States of Mind tour for what will be a fantastic, free show. July 2: Toad the Wet Sprocket

It’s been 34 years since Toad the Wet Sprocket’s first album Bread & Circus (Abe Records, 1989) dropped to little fanfare. It wasn’t until their third outing, Fear (Columbia Records, 1991) that the band catapulted into national consciousness, thanks to two singles —  “All I Want” and “Walk on the Ocean” — charting on Billboard’s Top 20. Now touring in support of their new compilation album All You Want, they stop in at Mishawaka Amphitheatre for a Poudre River session. July 20: Cypress Hill with The Colorado Symphony

Cypress Hill became the first hip-hop group to have two albums on the charts at the same time when Black Sunday (Ruffhouse Records) debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 on this date back in 1993. They’re upping their game for this 30th anniversary as they’ll be joined by the Colorado Symphony at Mission Ballroom in Denver to revisit the incredibly popular record, which went triple platinum.
