Reader’s Picks

Overall Restaurant

East County: Colterra

There are dishes that make the clouds part and the sun shine down. Right then and there, you understand the amazingness of food. For me, that happened at Niwot’s Colterra with a plate of wild boar short ribs served with veggies and crispy polenta. It was a hearty dish with a whirlwind of savory favors, locally influenced and beautifully inspired. It was love on
a plate.

Boulder: The Med

Year after year, The Mediterranean beats out all the hot-shot newcomer restaurants for readers’ votes. And why is that? Because The Med is not a flash-in-the-pan sort of joint. It’s enduring. Heck, The Med could be considered a brick in the foundation on which the Boulder food scene was built. Oh yeah, and you’ll get some killer food and drinks there.

Contemporary

East County: Sugarbeet

The moment you walk into Longmont’s Sugarbeet you know you are in for something special. The food is never contrived or cliché—from short ribs to baskets of yucca chips with house-made salsas to pork saltimbocca with speck and a caper-mustard cream. And while it’s often a surprise to see what they have to offer, it’s
always good.

Boulder: The Kitchen

There are too many things about The Kitchen to note here: the social consciousness, the rapidly expanding brand, the sustainable aforethought to ingredients. But it’s the pure deliciousness of their food that makes us respect and adore their presence in this city. Here’s to delicious food.

Cheap Eats

East County: Martino’s Pizzeria

There is a sense of humor at Martino’s in Lafayette. Heck, they have a bacon cheeseburger pizza that comes with Ketchup, mustard and pickles. But when it comes to the eats, it’s seriously good and seriously affordable. Two slices and a large drink for $5.99? That’s not even funny.

Boulder: Snarf’s

It’s rare that you can stuff yourself silly for under $12 in Boulder. At Snarf’s, the largest sandwiches you can order will keep you full for the rest of the day and they cost less than a trip to Starbucks.

Bakery

East County: Indulge Bakery

We’ve decided the verb “to indulge” should only be used when consuming food from Indulge in Lafayette: croissants, bacon, chive and cheddar scones or chocolate truffle torte. That way, your indulgences are always gratifying and soul-satisfying.

Boulder: Spruce Confections

At Spruce, there are cookies and muffins and croissants, even salads and sandwiches, but it’s the scones that have made these little Boulder bakeries renowned. We suggest the cream cheese and peaches scone.

Bagel

East County: Big Daddy Bagels

In concept, bagels are a fairly simple thing. But when you serve up 15 different kinds of bagels and 17 different kinds of cream cheese as well as sandwiches—and you do it all well, as does Big Daddy and his crew—that’s a feat.

Boulder: Moe’s Broadway Bagel

Moe’s isn’t just about bagels—though they serve mighty fine bagels. It’s a community and a culture unto itself. Regulars are common, and the family grows with each bagel served.

BBQ

East County: Lulu’s BBQ

I’ve pretty much worked my way through Lulu’s menu, and the only thing I can say is: It doesn’t really matter what you order, it will be smoky and juicy and tender and wonderful.

Boulder: Rib House

The ribs served up at the Rib House are heaven sent: fall-off-the-bone delicious, meaty and hickory-smoked. The meat gods shine down on Boulder County.

Burger

East County: Smashburger

You gotta respect a home-grown business that is built to be a national brand. But your respect grows even more when you bite into a bulky, smashed burger or avocado club chicken sandwich and Smash fries.

Boulder: Larkburger

For those folks who don’t like Boulder and who must drive into Boulder to get their Larkburger fix (with truffle, Parmesan fries on the side), there is what we might call “a hint of jealousy.” They might not admit it, but if Larkburger suddenly seceded from the Republic, they’d be cool with it.

Chinese

East County: Lui’s

What the residents of Erie know, they usually like to keep secret. So, it’s only an act of philanthropy that they spread the love that is Lui’s. Try the pork dim sum, gwin jin and the Szechuan, and you’ll have a secret too.

Boulder: China Gourmet

The fans of China Gourmet will wax poetic about this place: the crispiness of the chicken wings, the tang of the tangerine prawns, the deliciousness of the sautéed spicy Chinese eggplant. Poetry on a plate.

Coffeeshop

East County: Brewing Market

Brewing Market becomes a part of your daily life. It’s your routine: shower, dress, brush your teeth, comb your hair, grab your keys, pull into Brewing Market, order Americano and breakfast burrito, consume, work. Plus, the locally owned chain has five locations, so there’s never an excuse.

Boulder: Ozo’s

No matter when you visit Ozo Coffee, it’s packed. Either the place is great or no one works in this town. We’ll vote for the former: The employees here see their job as a craft and passion. Try the Ozo blend…at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday.

Gluten Free

East County: Martino’s

Rare is a restaurant that can make every dish on the menu gluten free. But at Martino’s Pizzeria, every pizza and every sandwich can be made with gluten free crust or bread. And don’t forget the gluten-free cookie for dessert.

Boulder: Turley’s

Tired of ordering salads? Turley’s has an entire menu dedicated to its gluten-free dishes—with everything from burgers with rice buns to pancakes.

Breakfast

East County: The Huckleberry

Breakfast is a sacred meal—often claimed to be the best meal. So, it’s a big deal to win this category. But The Huckleberry does have it going on: with a country-cool style that carries from the menu to the decor. Try the mixed berry crepe, and you’ll see why.

Boulder: Lucille’s

It all comes back to the biscuit. There are so many good things about Lucille’s breakfasts. The chicory coffee, hearty dishes like the eggs Jennifer or the Carlin County, or maybe even a spiked orange juice. And then, the biscuit just becomes this fluffy, luscious cherry on top.

Breakfast Burrito

East County and Boulder: Santiago’s

I once purchased 10 Santiago’s burritos to bring to the office during a rough deadline. It was as though I had brought each and every staff member a special little gift. There was gasping, moments of silence followed by low moans of happiness. You are welcome.

Brunch

East County: The Huckleberry

If you’re eating brunch, it pretty much means you can’t get up in time for breakfast (that’s just a theory), but you still want to have the option of eating breakfast. So, at The Huckleberry, you’ll be pleased to know that the wild blueberry flapjacks, potato latkes and the chicken fried steak are served until 3 p.m.

Boulder: Greenbriar

It’s almost noon, and we’ve eaten our weight in Caesar salad, prime rib, eggs Benedict, bacon, baked chicken and so many other dishes I can no longer remember. Our server is still filling my Champagne glass, but I can never say no to Champagne. And I slowly realize that this is the best Sunday ever.

Dessert

East County: Eats and Sweets

With a name like this, Eats and Sweets can’t be denied this title. Serving Boulder Ice Cream along side homemade brownies, cookies, cupcakes and pies, it’s more than a name.

Boulder: Piece, Love and Chocolate

Truffles may just be the most perfect bite of food possible, and at Piece, Love and Chocolate, the truffle is done with skill, love and a limitless creative freedom (porcini cream, anyone?)

Chain

Chipotle

When Chipotle founder Steve Ells appeared on America’s Next Great Restaurant, he did Colorado proud. This is a state where dreams come true…and burritos are yummy.

Green Chili

East County: Santiago’s

The green chili served at Santiago’s can be ingested in all sorts of ways. We love it as a condiment…the world’s best condiment. Put it on your burritos, your carne asada or even your shoe. It’s thick and spicy (order it as you like it), full of chunks of pork and perfect to decorate any dish.

Boulder: Efrain’s

Efrain’s green chili is not a side dish or, god forbid, a dip. It’s a main course, like a soup, served with tortillas. But before you dive in, beware, it’s spicy. Like, tears-in-your-napkin-sweat-on-your-brow-lips-bloated-and-red spicy…and yet delectable.

Indian

East County: Flavor of India

Longmont, thank your lucky stars that you have Flavor of India. This downtown restaurant is a local favorite, serving up sensational Indian dishes, like chicken tikka or lamb curry.

Boulder: Tandoori Grill

The naan says a lot of about an Indian restaurant, and here, it’s freshly baked, slightly chewy and full of yeasty goodness. At Tandoori Grill, you’ll also find delicious curries, crispy fennel flat bread and saag.

Italian

East County: Pinocchio’s

There is a timeless, classic feel to Pinocchio’s in Lafayette: Casual, comfortable and all red sauce and red wine. Try the spinach salad and the radiatorre.

Boulder: Laudisio

We love a commitment to using local products, but even more, we love when local restaurants make delicious food out of local products. Laudisio does just that—with an Italian twist. Order the Long Farm pork loin scaloppini to see for yourself.

Mexican

Boulder and East County: Efrain’s

Efrain’s has its quirks (in Lafayette, there are fake poinsettia plants in the rafters), but when all is said and done, the food is spectacular. From the beautiful hue of the chili Colorado to the breath-taking spice of the chili verde to the richness of the mondongo, it’s a Mexican dream served up on a plate.

Patio

East County: Martini’s

The patio at Longmont’s Martini’s is really an extension of the restaurant’s shabby-chic-hip vibe. The gorgeous old Victorian home spills out on to the yard come summer—with tables, couches and fire places. Just like inside, it’s warm, cool and comfortable.

Boulder: The Rio

In Kansas, a rooftop patio would be a moot point. But in Boulder, where the view is the instigator of all good things that happen, a rooftop patio is heaven sent. Add a margarita and a quesadilla, we are happy.

Lunch

East County: Sun Rose Café

Tucked away inside a downtown Longmont storefront, Sun Rose is a big, airy space filled with diners looking for a little satisfaction. Here, the soups, sandwiches and salads pack a lot of flavor and are whole-heartedly satisfying.

Boulder: Foolish Craig’s

There is nothing foolish about the food coming out of the Foolish Craig’s kitchen. The Southwest black bean burger? Brilliant! The BLT guacamole sandwich? So smart! The Spinach Bleu Cheese Salad? Both sharp and bright!

Salad

East County: Lucky Pie

Lucky Pie not only serves up some lovely pizza, but they know their way around a salad spinner as well. We adore the spicy Caesar and the kale salad.

Boulder: Mad Greens

Mad Greens is the Starbucks of all things green and leafy. Here, the world is your salad. Pick and choose your own toppings and dressing or have one of the expertly fashioned creations.

Seafood

East County: Jax

This contemporary take on a classic seafood joint has been a Boulder favorite for years. While the seafood is tremendous, don’t forget to order dessert.

Boulder: Tortuga’s

People continuously talk about Tortuga’s as “Longmont’s best-kept secret.” Well, we are unkeeping that secret here and now. Tortuga’s is not only East County’s best seafood spot (the fish here is lovely), but it’s one of Longmont’s best restaurants.

Sandwich

East County: Eats and Sweets

“Eats” is a pretty general term, but at Eats and Sweets, it includes some really tasty sandwiches. Pick from 53 different ingredients, and enjoy the results.

Boulder: Snarf’s

Snarf’s is just Snarf’s. You could never confuse a Snarf’s sandwich for something else. From the so yummy bread to the crazy creations to the endless amount of options, it’s just Snarf’s. If you eat there, you get it.

Pizza

East County: Martino’s

When the trend toward wood-fired Naples-style pizza becomes overwhelming, it’s refreshing to break through the noise with a good ol’ American pie. Here, they do it up right with the most fun, tasty takes on pizza topping.

Boulder: Pizzeria Basta

Before all the others joined its ranks, Pizzeria Basta was this artisan pizza shop in Boulder, serving up innovative wood-fired pizzas that taste like nothing else. Time and trends have proved them right.

Steak

East County: Colorado Coal Company

While our editor opts for the fried pickles, our designers dig the calamari and our sales people go for the booze, the residents of Erie flock en masse to Colorado Coal Company for the perfectly cooked steaks: top sirloin, ribeye, the bone-in buffalo ribeye or the New York strip.

Boulder: Boulder Chop House

This high-end joint goes all traditional when it comes to steaks: enjoy the filet mignon or the porterhouse with a baked potato and cabernet thyme jus.

Sushi

East County: 95a

When Magnolia became 95a last year, we feared the worst. But the new owners knew that you shouldn’t mess with a good thing. Keeping the half steakhouse, half sushi bar concept, diners can luckily still enjoy the ruby red roll or the annihilator roll.

Boulder: Sushi Zanmai

Sushi Zanmai is a local’s favorite (duh), which means it’s almost always packed and it’s noisy and fun and full of personality. But it all starts with the food: We recommend the fried avocado and the house specialty, the Z #9 roll.

Thai

East County: Thai Kitchen

Now with three locations, Thai Kitchen is never far away. And that’s such a good thing. Here, all the curries are delectable, the spicy jungle noodles are so tasty and the soups are something to seek out.

Boulder: Khow Thai

One of our staffers is a Khow Thai super fan. I recently asked him to elaborate on the Boulder Thai spot. And this is what he said, “Khow Thai is the shizzz, not only because they have the most amazing Thai food in Colorado, but the husband-wife tag-team owners are some of the nicest people around. My favorite dishes are Masaman Curry and Pad Thai, not to mention their Thai iced tea and mango with sticky rice dessert are bombbbbbbb!” Did I mention he’s 23?

Healthy

East County: Morning Glory Café

On the menu, you’ll find hormone-free meat, organic veggies and free-range eggs in dishes like whole grain pancakes, beet carpaccio, stuffed squash and a black bean, tempeh burger. Bonus: it’s delicious.

Boulder: Leaf

Meat-eaters beware, you’ll enjoy this place. The folks behind Leaf know their veggies: making vegetarian food as good as it possibly can be. They are expanding horizons, and breaking culinary boundaries.

Overall bar

East County: Waterloo

It all begins with the atmosphere: low lighting, brick walls and the bar as the centerpiece of the room. As you enter, you already know this night at Waterloo will be a good one. And then a beer appears in front of you and the band plays.

Boulder: Tahona Tequila Bistro

There are three requirements for a bar: booze, munchies and deals. Right in the heart of Boulder, Tahona serves nearly 20 types of margaritas along with a menu of high-end snacks, including duck nachos. Don’t forget happy hour seven days a week. Check, check and check.

Dive Bar

East County: Henry’s

Cheap beer, darts, pool tables and a jukebox. What else do you need? Nothing, Henry’s in Louisville has everything you could ask for in a dive bar.

Boulder: Sundown Saloon

You’ve got friends at the Sundown Saloon. This classic Boulder basement bar has friendly bartenders and an interesting mixture of people who are ready to make your acquaintance. Oh, and cheap drinks!

Brewery

Left Hand Brewing Co.

There are breweries purely for tours, sampling and buying T-shirts (ahem, New Belgium). At Left Hand, it’s as much a local watering hole as any bar in Longmont—a gathering place for locals who want a beer and some good conversation.

Beer

Sawtooth Ale, Left Hand

Sawtooth is Left Hand’s flagship beer: It’s an easy-drinking amber ale with tons of flavor and complexity. We could shower you with terms like “malty chewiness,” but we know that it’s just good beer.

Bloody Mary

East County: Waterloo

Served in a pint glass and topped with a pepperoncini and limes, Waterloo’s bloody Mary is well balanced and full of all the right flavors. It’s a hearty bloody Mary, perfect for the times when you really need a bloody Mary.

Boulder: Snooze

When all else fails, go spicy. Especially in the morning, when coffee isn’t enough, and you’ve spent an hour waiting for a seat, opt for Snooze’s bloody Mary with pepper-infused vodka.

Happy Hour

East County: Empire Lounge

Happy hour should make you happy, and at Empire, you’ll find $3 munchies and discounted drinks, which is just pure glee.

Boulder: Boulder Café

Happy hour at the Boulder Café is actually happy hours: everyday from 3 p.m. to close, the top shelf happy hour offers up half-price appetizers and half-price beer, glasses of wine and you-call-it cocktails.

Margarita

East County: Si Senor Real Mexican

Along with real Mexican food, Si Senor serves up very real margaritas. And you can order them in 16-, 32- or 64-ounce servings. We suggest the organic margarita with blue agave tequila, agave nectar and fresh lime juice…and make it a large.

Boulder: Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant

You’re officially a local if you have a story that begins with, “And then, after my third Rio margarita…” Where that story goes—dancing on a bar, sleeping in your car, etc.—is up to you, but know this, all good stories begin with a Rio margarita.

Wine List

East County: Zucca

The new kid on the block brings in a win with a list of Italian wines that’s diverse and well balanced. These glasses and bottles fit perfectly with the dishes of broad Italian influence.

Boulder: Frasca Food and Wine

Once again, Frasca co-owner and master sommelier Bobby Stuckey has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation for exceptional wine service. It’s not really a surprise: Stuckey has compiled a well-rounded, courageous list of wines.

I’m sure every review of Tossa Pizza so far has mentioned the glut of excellent pizzerias in Boulder (and I just made this one no exception), but interestingly, Tossa fills its own niche. It’s not fast food or delivery like Naked Pizza; it’s not white tablecloth like Pizzeria Locale. It’s something in between. And it works. Started by Tom Ryan, creator of the Smashburger chain, Tossa is a fast-casual restaurant at lunch and a full-service experience at dinner. The menu isn’t vast, but it’s extensive enough that I certainly couldn’t try everything in my visits here, and encompasses small plates,

The menu isn’t vast, but it’s extensive enough that I certainly couldn’t try everything in my visits here, and encompasses small plates, pizzas in two sizes, salads, pastas and panini. A cleverly coded wine list offers reds and whites that have been pre-matched to the menu items so that you can order a paired red or white with any dish should you choose. (The suggested pinot grigio I had on my first visit was pleasantly dry and nicely matched to the pizza.)

Our favorites started with the harvest salad, topped with roasted chicken, goat cheese, dried cherries, apricots, figs and sunflower and pumpkin seeds. The combination was fresh, different enough to be surprising, and flavorfully balanced. Plus, I for one will be on the lookout for when they start selling bottles of their sundried tomato vinaigrette, as it was a highlight of the meal for me.

Another huge hit was the mushroom, truffle and arugula salad pizza. This white pizza is built on their signature “not too thick, not too thin” oval pizza crust and topped with parmesan, mozzarella, aged provolone, mushrooms and fresh basil beneath a bed of fresh arugula dressed in truffle oil and shaved parmesan. This pizza feels decadent and a bit healthy at the same time, what with all those fresh greens in the mix. A self-proclaimed mushroom-hater at my table nevertheless went back for seconds and thirds and didn’t even attempt to pick the mushrooms off. For someone with more classic tastes, the everything pizza didn’t disappoint, with piles of tasty sausage, pepperoni, roasted veggies and olives. We all enjoyed their custom blend of Italian cheeses, especially the provolone, which gave these pies an extra kick. Also impressive was the list of “contemporary” pastas made primarily with broth rather than a heavier traditional Italian sauce (though those dishes are available as well). My personal favorite was the lemon, pistachio and chicken with baby spinach and roasted mushrooms in a garlic broth. Light yet complexly flavorful and very satisfying.

The restaurant itself is nicer than I had expected, with upscale décor, and the service was mostly attentive and uneventful. Perhaps the most pleasantly surprising aspect was the prices. The quality of the food is higher than the prices would suggest, making this a wise choice for a quick lunch in Boulder or a more leisurely sit-down weeknight dinner. I was able to feed a hungry crowd of six at our office for around $30, including the tip, and everyone came back for seconds.

This year, we’re giving our Best of the West winners the red carpet treatment: The readers have spoken, the critics have made their picks and several local celebrities have added their two cents.

Overall Restaurant

Colterra : East County

This Niwot hideaway was Chef Bradford Heap’s first shining star, and it continues to be a gem of East County dining with seasonal dishes inspired by the cuisines of southern France and northern Italy.

The Mediterranean : Boulder

The Med (officially, The Mediterranean) does a little bit of a lot of things with great aplomb. The menu combines Italian, Spanish, French and Greek cuisine in an array of tapas, salads, seafood, paella, grilled meats, pizzas and house-made baked goods and desserts. No wonder it’s a perennial favorite.

Contemporary American

Terroir : East County

As its name might suggest, Terroir takes seasonality and locale very seriously. Its menu draws inspiration from the Colorado land and landscape, offering modern American cuisine doused with the flavors of the Mediterranean.

Salt : Boulder

It was a bold move to take over the venerable Tom’s Tavern space, but with Salt’s farm-to-table menu and innovative cocktail program, it’s living up to the reputation long established at its historic locale.

Cheap Eats

Martino’s Pizzeria : East County

Since it opened, Martino’s has quickly become a YS staff lunch favorite, with tasty traditional thin-crust pies, unusual flavors and a gluten-free option that everyone from sales to graphics can enjoy—whether we’re normally gluten-free or not.

Snarf’s Sub Shop : Boulder

Whether you’re hankering for a classic Italian, a cheese and mushroom or a prime rib and provolone, you can’t beat Snarf’s for a tasty, toasty sandwich every time, served up in a colorful sub shop, quick as you please. And with six locations, you’re never far from satisfying a craving.

Bakery

Indulge Bakery : East County

In the foodie faith, heaven is often described as a pastry shop, with gleaming glass cases brimming with gourmet treats as beautiful to behold as they are delicious to taste. Should you find yourself in need of a soul-stirring baked good, worship at the altar of Indulge and try a taste of heaven.

Tee & Cakes : Boulder

We recently discovered Tee & Cakes also sells really excellent Novo coffee, making that daily cupcake run just that much more legitimate. It’s a lot more socially acceptable to say you’re going to grab a cup of coffee than going to grab a cupcake…and maybe a whoopie pie…and some cookies…

Bagel

Big Daddy Bagels : East County

You may or may not be aware Big Daddy Bagels not only sells, well, really fine bagels, but they also toast them and put all sorts of fabulous things in the middle of them, creating bagel sandwiches that are some of the finest in the land. And their chocolate chip cookies aren’t half bad, either.

Moe’s Broadway Bagel : Boulder

Moe’s bagels are legit on two fronts: New York-style bagels served up in an atmosphere that couldn’t be anywhere but Boulder. Swoop in for a fix that’s Big Apple and People’s Republic all at once.

BBQ

KT’s Real Good BBQ : EC and B

With nearly 20 years and four locations under their belt, Kirk and Tricia Jamison (the eponymous KT) know a bit about barbecue. Their smoky trail took them from Seattle to Memphis to Boulder with a passion for great barbecue leading the way.

Breakfast & Brunch

The Huckleberry : East County

Sitting in pride of place on a prominent corner in Louisville, stepping into Huckleberry feels a bit like stepping back in time for the kind of country breakfast you thought went the way of phone booth. It really doesn’t matter what you order. As the kids say, “it’s all good.”

Lucile’s Creole Cafe : Boulder

Biscuits, gravy, red beans and grits. Need we say more? OK, then how about chicory coffee and beignets. Yeah. Thought so.

Breakfast Burrito

Santiago’s : EC and B

On the Santiago’s website, there is a little ticker showing customer-submitted answers to the phrase, “You know you’re addicted to Santiago’s when…” Someone apparently submitted “…the burritos work faster than Viagra.” We don’t know about that, but now we’ll know a happy customer when we see one.

Burger

SmashBurger : East County

It’s all about the crispy bits. Smash that meat against the griddle and the edges get deliciously crispy and carbonized while the middle stays moist and juicy. Add to that the fact that you can get it built any way you like with a side of fried potato goodness and this becomes the fast-food burger joint that puts all the others
to shame.

Larkburger : Boulder

Oh, trendy hamburger paradise. Why must you be in Boulder while we languish 20 or 30 minutes away in East County? Please bring your black Angus burgers, your truffle fries and your real ice cream milk shakes out our way. We’ll love you better. Promise.

Chinese

Spice China : East County

You wouldn’t think a restaurant with a 20-page menu would need to add anything, but when Spice China added a sushi bar last year, it only made it better. Bring your reading glasses and dig in; everything’s good, Chinese, Japanese and beyond.

China Gourmet : Boulder

Don’t be shy; step up to the counter and order the best Chinese food in Boulder. Sure, the atmosphere may leave a little to be desired, but the food more than makes up for it. Lunch specials here are a great deal.

Coffee shop

Brewing Market Coffee : EC and B

Start with a great bean and you get a good brew. Add baristas who are never too busy to add a heart or leaf pattern to your latte and who never blink when you order something weird like decaf. Top with the genius of burritos heated on a panini press, and it’s pretty clear why Brewing Market leads the coffee chains around here.

Restaurant for a date

Magnolia : East County

Steak and sushi are sexy, but you can order anything off the menu at Magnolia and feel the romantic vibes. Allow us to recommend the blue crab macaroni and cheese, mon petit chou. A swank dining room and patio won’t hurt your cause either.

Frasca Food and Wine : Boulder

If your date knows anything about food or the restaurant scene in Colorado, just mentioning you’ve booked a table for two at Frasca will set her heart aflutter. Forgot the reservation? If the fates are with you, there might be room for two at the salumi table. Tell her you requested it specially. We won’t say anything.

Dessert

Indulge Bakery : East County

There’s a reason this place is called Indulge. It’s because you’re already thinking about dessert at 9 am on a Thursday. It’s because you plan ahead to swing by and pick up a “little something” for that special dinner at home. It’s because you’d rather go here than order off of a dessert menu anywhere else.

Tee & Cakes : Boulder

Cupcakes are the perfect dessert: they’re decadent without being overwhelming (no great wall of cake here); they’re individually sized so you don’t have to share; and they come in as many flavors as there are moods. Who cares what’s on the dessert list? Let’s just have cupcakes.

For Families

Zamparelli’s Italian Bistro : East County

Unlike most “family-friendly” pizza places, there are no scary animatronic creatures at Zamparelli’s. You will not be forced to listen to the ruckus of screaming children playing noisy midway games. Instead, you and the kids will experience real food from a real menu in a real restaurant. And bonus: They can make you a martini.

Turley’s : Boulder

Please don’t take this the wrong way Turley’s, but to us, you’re like an upscale Denny’s, made for families hungry for real food instead of corporate dreck. You’re the sort of place where parents can feel good about feeding their kids, and kids feel really good about the food on their plates. It’s a compliment; trust us.

Green Chile

Santiago’s : East County

Santiago’s now ships its chile all over the state and beyond. If that’s not a vote of confidence, we don’t know what is.

Efrain’s II : Boulder

The chile at Efrain’s reminds us of John Mellencamp crooning that it “hurts so good.” No greasy gravy here; just straight up authentic heat. Come on, baby. Make it hurt so good.

Indian

Taj Mahal : East County

Hiding in a nondescript strip mall is a jewel of India. Ornately decorated with food as exotic and rich as the décor. The lunch buffet is a steal, and the take away a great way to bring India home.

Bombay Bistro : Boulder

Fresh ingredients from local farms mix with modern and traditional Indian flavors in this hip, hot spot. Try the boneless beef short ribs for a taste of everything Indian cuisine can be. A new cocktail menu rounds out the experience with fresh flavors to compliment your meal.

Italian

Zamparelli’s Italian Bistro : East County

Zamparelli’s is so much more than pizza. Their risotto balls are transcendent. Their pastas hit the mark every time. Their salads go beyond just lettuce. If you can manage not to order one of their fantastic pizzas, you’ll realize they have fantastic everything else as well.

Laudisio : Boulder

Laudisio was farm-to-table before it was cool. For 20 years they’ve served up the very best in local products with a true Italian flare. Their wood-fired pizzas (and mobile oven) were ahead of the trend. In fact, Laudisio seems to be ahead of the curve in pretty much every department.

Mexican

Efrain’s : EC and B

Personally, I could eat the chile verde bowl (with a side of guacamole) at least once a week. It’s my favorite. But the mondongo bowl also has a crave-worthy allure, as does the mystique of the Efrain’s burrito. No matter what, you get something delicious, something that will soon become your favorite.

Patio

Martini’s Bistro : East County

Martini’s is always a nice spot for dinner or lunch. But come spring, the beautiful Victorian with charm unto itself opens its lovely patio for diners. It’s like a normal restaurant patio but with all the perks of a hip lounge—cozy chairs, fireplaces, perfect lighting, excellent people watching and cocktails, of course.

The Mediterranean : Boulder

The Med’s patio is coveted. If it’s not raining or snowing or doing one of Colorado’s odd climatic freakshows, you want a spot on the patio. You want it because, maybe, just maybe, the slight breeze, sunshine and fresh air will make you feel as though you are sitting seaside on the coast of Spain, eating mussels and paella.

Lunch

Sun Rose Cafe : East County

There’s no want for deliciousness at Sun Rose—it’s all yummy. But there is a special you get from a cup of homemade soup (it changes daily) and a smoked turkey and bacon panini with slices of avocado, sweet basil vinaigrette, sun dried tomatoes and Dijon mayo. It exemplifies the Longmont eatery’s balance between hearty, familiar flavors and homemade inventiveness.

The Mediterranean : Boulder

Power lunches are for getting work done (or at least looking like you’re getting work done). But ya’ll gotta eat too. The Med has long been a destination for East County and Boulder power-lunchers and casual-lunchers alike, serving up all sorts of amazing tapas and entrees. Kind of makes being productive a lot more appetizing.

Salad

Zamparelli’s : East County

There are salads and then there are Zamp’s salads. Never overwrought or overcrowded, these are light and scrumptious. The Caesar is a tangy spin on a classic (with buttery croutons), the arugula salad is doused in Parmigiano-Reggiano with a tangy balsamic, and the pear and gorgonzola has tremendous balance with fruit and cheese, walnuts and greens. It’s a whole new world of salads.

Mad Greens : Boulder

It happens all the time. You have 30 minutes for lunch, and your choices are a handful of fast food or fast casual eateries. But all you want is a spinach salad with grilled portobello, blue cheese, artichoke hearts, almonds and maybe shallot tarragon vinaigrette. McDonald’s definitely isn’t gonna do it. But Mad Greens really does do it your way.

Sandwich

Martino’s Pizzeria : East County

When you want your sandwich to be a little more like pizza—melted mozzarella, homemade tomato sauce and Italian sausage—you would be remiss to overlook the Italian grinder at Martino’s. It’s overflowing, rich and gratifying, this sandwich leaves you stuffed.

Snarf’s Sub Shop : Boulder

If you can stand its loud music and a little wait for the food: Snarf’s kitchen crew and amazing food make it totally worthwhile. These famous sandwiches are served on hot, fresh bread, and each ingredient is sure to have you’re taste buds tingling through to the very last bite.

Seafood

Tortuga’s : East County

Tortuga’s is consistently referred to as the “hidden gem” of Longmont. Set in a pretty little historic home, they serve up amazing Caribbean- and Southern-inspired fare with flavors that you can’t find anywhere else in the area. If you know what’s good for you, discover this gem.

Jax Fish House : Boulder

Jax garnered national fame when its chef Hosea Rosenberg won Top Chef a few years back. But way before Rosenberg wowed Bravo obsessees, Jax was making locals drool over stellar seafood. Jax consistently does inspired plates of beautiful fish and shellfish, paying homage to the natural flavors of the ocean and rivers while showing their innovative muscles.

Pizza

Martino’s Pizzeria : East County

In this day and age, it’s tough to find a place where all people with all dietary restrictions can gather and enjoy a meal together. But Martino’s has gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options. It’s always a crowd pleaser—no matter how picky your crowd is. Martino’s unites us all!

Abo’s : Boulder

Abo’s serves up a straight-forward pizza that pleases both college students and wayward office workers searching for mid-day sustenance, especially when that’s a big, thin-crust slice of pepperoni pizza. Whether you’re on a country road in Erie or in the heart of Boulder, Abo’s has a slice waiting for you.

Steakhouse

Magnolia : East County

Magnolia is the James Franco of restaurants (it’s good at a lot of things). But steak? Their steaks are swagger and savoir fair, like their grilled Angus sirloin with roasted garlic demi, which is served with buttermilk onion rings. Delicious and sexy…like the time James Franco guest stared on General Hospital.

The Boulder Chophouse : Boulder

The Boulder Chophouse brings a bit of upscale romance to the traditional steakhouse concept. There are no peanuts on the floor, but there is meat—crazy good slabs of perfectly grilled, well-seasoned steak.

Sushi

Sushi Mara (Magnolia) : East County

Lafayette’s Magnolia has different personalities: At one moment it’s a steakhouse, the next you’re being served a beautiful salad and leg of lamb. Then you’re getting an annihilator roll and two orders of unagi. And that’s a good thing, because we know that no matter our mood, we’re covered.

Sushi Zanmai : Boulder

You leave Sushi Zanmai with a smile on your face. It’s the sake. Then, of course, you’ve just had more raw fish than a binging shark, and you stayed late to catch surprisingly tolerable karaoke. Just try not to smile.

Thai

Thai Kitchen : East County

Thai Kitchen is legit. Which is our way of saying the Longmont restaurant may be the easiest way to connect with Thai culture while staying in town. The dishes—like the larb, pad prig and Thai curries—are traditional, full of exotic flavors, spices and heat.

Chy Thai Cuisine : Boulder

I judge Thai food restaurants by their tom kha soup. It’s not as ubiquitous as pad thai or curries, and when you take a sip of a truly delicious tom kha, you know you’ve found something special. Chy Thai’s is spicy but sweet, filled with meaty mushrooms and a subtle perfume of lemongrass. From there, keep eating.

Vegetarian

Flavor of India Inc. : East County

This happens every year: Flavor of India, by no means a “vegetarian restaurant,” is voted best vegetarian restaurant. But we feel for the non-meat eaters, and we’re happy they’ve found solace in their veggie samosas, aloo gobi and sag paneer.

Leaf : Boulder

We have a couple of vegetarians on staff, and they are a vocal, passionate few (they’ve even muscled the meat-eaters into Meatless Mondays). Boulder’s Leaf is a celebration of them: a restaurant that honors the vegetarian, preparing truly delicious food sans animal.

Bar

Waterloo : East County

Waterloo is the little black dress of bars. Seriously, hear me out: it’s classic yet trendy, it’s sexy and cool, and your mom would totally approve. With exposed brick, local beers on tap and a band usually playing your song, no matter your mood, it’s just the right fit.

The Bitter Bar/Happy : Boulder

The Bitter Bar is an adventure. It can be a pick-your-own-adventure. Or you can stow away on one of their mixologist’s expeditions. Order off of the menu (the Aviation is a dream or try the Green Tea Pimm’s) or simply tell the bad-ass staff what you like. Either way, prepare for a journey.

Dive Bar

Dillinger’s Food & Spirits : East County

Discover your inner delinquent at this bar with wide-set bar stools and pool tables to break away from the usual crowd. Stop by to get real bar grub with a nice bottled beer.

The Dark Horse : Boulder

Make your way into the belly of the beast with this untamed bar. Much like its name signifies, you’ll dive into a darkened, tight-quartered tavern and relish the flea market décor galore. With food like peanut-butter cheeseburgers and flowing beer on tap, I challenge you to giddy up.

Pub/Tavern

Waterloo : East County

Pub must-haves: beer and food. Waterloo doesn’t just have food. It has a list of burgers (the potato burger will seduce you), barbecue and some killer jalapeno poppers that go perfectly with a glass of local beer. Done and done.

Conor O’Neill’s : Boulder

I have a confession: I’m a former Conor O’Neill’s regular. The reason for the “former” has less to do with Conor O’Neill’s and more to do with me no longer being a barfly (that happens when you age). But as I think about having a boxty and a pint of Strongbow, there are still temptations.

Brewery

Oskar Blues : East County

If breweries were periods of ancient civilization, Oskar Blues would be the Roman Empire. It seems, these days, the funky Lyons brewpub has exploded with multiple locations—a restaurant and a tasting room—and a true national brand. We’re just the beneficiaries of their reign.

Boulder Beer Company : Boulder

The creations of Boulder Beer are crowd pleasers: drinkable but inventive, bold and flavorful. It’s no wonder our readers drink Boulder Beer’s beers by…well…the pint.

Happy Hour

Magnolia : East County

Happy hour is supposed to be happy, so when you finally get there, all you want are friends, a discounted cocktail and snacks. Magnolia has two of those—with a menu of bites and bits, including tempura avocado, in the casual cocktail lounge or the patio. Just bring friends.

The Mediterranean : Boulder

The best thing about The Med’s happy hour is the selection. They don’t just hand you a tiny list of happy hour restrictions. There are mussels, hummus and tapas to share or to hoard. And fear not, they serve up quality, not just quantity.

Margaritas

Efrain’s II : East County

The Efrain’s margarita comes in a jar—an unintimidating glass of golden liquid. It’s a bit sweet with flecks of salt and a soft hint of tequila shining through. It’s a summer day in one sip.

Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant : Boulder

The Rio marg is the stuff of legends. It’s toppled grown men and crushed many a 21-year-old. Slightly sweet and full of tang, these are not the type of cocktails served in fishbowls or downed by the gallon. There’s a limit of three, but trust us—three Rio margs could be your downfall.

Wine List

Zucca Italian Ristorante : East County

We love wine lists that have range. Zucca, Louisville’s new Italian stallion, has a well-curated list that spans Italy’s best wine regions. Have a little glass of Piedmont or a glass of Tuscany. That’s the kind of range we can drink in.

Frasca Food and Wine : Boulder

James Beard knows his stuff, and when he talks, we listen. The James Beard Foundation has repeatedly honored Bobby Stuckey, the co-owner of Frasca and master sommelier, for his mad skills as the wine director at Boulder’s Friulian gem. Their wine list has breadth and depth, it’s world-class but locally inspired.

I’m starting to feel like I’ve moved to Swallow Falls, the mythical town in the film Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs where cheeseburgers rain down from the sky.

The Boulder-Denver area has become ground zero for ground beef. This revelation came to me as I was sitting at Larkburger, created by noted Vail chef Thomas Salamunovich. The recent Boulder addition sells an exceptional burger and addictive thin fries.

Across Arapahoe I spied a Red Robin, a sit-down burger group that calls Colorado home, as does Good Times, the chain that has an outlet nearby on Pearl Street.
The latest local, Smashburger, is one of the country’s hottest new chains. The nearest one is a short drive east on Arapahoe to Lafayette in the former site of Icon Burgers, the eatery that spawned Smashburger. Boulder gets one in 2010. Smashburger, and the equally good Five Guys Burger and Fries chain, on Main Street in Longmont, are both modeled on the West Coast cult favorite, In-N-Out.

It’s also not hard at all to find topnotch independent examples starting with Bradford Heap’s new Salt Bistro where the iconic Tom’s Tavern burger has been reborn and significantly upgraded. You can also find stellar patties at Radek Cerny’s Full Belly bistro and at the Empire in Louisville.

That’s why I had to tsk-tsk when I saw that The Sink was recommended in the September Sunset as the best place near CU to grab a burger. It may be a historic hangout but the burgers are nothing special.

I know I’m asking for trouble any time I recommend or criticize burgers. In the September Yellow Scene, I noted that I occasionally enjoy the Bambinos cheeseburger sliders at Good Times. I received an email (see Fan Mail below) from a reader from which I had to edit offensive language.

I respect his passion. Hell hath no furry like a disappointed burger devotee, but your point is ridiculous. Those of us who work—and who don’t want to burn the gas, are not driving to Denver for steak house sliders, no matter how yummy. Go try all the burgers mentioned above and then we can debate.

If you’ve got a beef with me, or a better burger to recommend, let me know at: nibbles@yellowscene.com. Just don’t address it to “Dude.”

ON THE MENU
The best things I’ve tasted at North Metro area eateries in the past 30 days or so include: a Lebanese-style gyros pita wrap with Greek salad and extra feta plus a honey-dripping diamond of nut-middled baklava at Mumtaz Mediterranean Food, 588 N. Highway 287, Lafayette; a thoroughly craveable spinach calzone with marinara sauce and an almost-East Coast cannoli at Dolce Sicilia, 3210 Wadsworth Blvd., Wheat Ridge; excellent dense (not fluffy) blueberry pancakes with Louisville-made chicken apple sausage, and eggs over easy at The Huckleberry, 700 Main St., Louisville, and aromatic kimchi pancakes griddled and dished with sriracha and cilantro-soy mayo dips at Bimbamboo, 1710 Pearl St., Boulder.

FAN MAIL
“Dude, next time you’re in Denver, go downtown to Morton’s for their sliders. They are $6 for three during their happy hour. They are unbelievably tasty. While I like Good Times, their sliders are foul. …I can’t believe you’re hyping them.”
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
“The cold truth is that family dinners are more often than not an ordeal of nervous indigestion, preceded by hidden resentment and ennui and accompanied by psychosomatic jitters.”—Legendary food writer M.F.K. Fisher
