After nearly five successful years at the RiNo Art Park, Alto Gallery – a program of Denver-based 501(c)(3) non-profit BirdSeed Collective – is moving to a new location at 3773 Walnut St., Denver, CO in July 2026. The new space is still in the neighborhood and offers a more open wall and floor plan, better street-level access, and close proximity to many restaurants, bars, shops, galleries, and music venues. It’s a new and exciting chapter full of changes, and Alto Gallery is dedicated to continuing our mission, programming, and support of the Denver artist community.

Alto Gallery has been a programming partner at the Art Park since its grand opening in the fall of 2021. As the lease at our previous location in the Tennyson/Berkley neighborhood was ending, Louise Martorano (now Managing Director of National Programs of CAST Colorado and former Executive Director of RedLine) generously invited us to move to the then-newly opened RedLine satellite studios at the RiNo Art Park. The new development promised public-private partnerships with the City of Denver, Denver Parks and Recreation, RiNo Art District (RAD), RedLine Contemporary Art Center, Denver Public Library, and Comal/Focus Points Family Resource Center. Along with sharing space with the subsidized RedLine satellite studios, Alto Gallery helped activate the studios and Art Park with monthly art exhibitions and free programming to the public.

During our time at the Art Park, Alto Gallery has presented 57 exhibitions (36 solo, 21 group), inviting at least 13,533 guests (by our clicker count). In addition to sharing original artworks from 312 contemporary artists (local, national, and international), we have invited visitors to numerous talks with artists, guest speakers, and curators; creative workshops and demonstrations from exhibiting and guest artists; musical, dance, spoken word, comedy, and experimental performances; community potlucks, movie nights, art markets, special art installations and murals, and more.

Being at the Art Park for almost five years has afforded us so many collaborative and community-oriented opportunities. Sharing space with the studio artists has been an incredible experience, resulting in so many rich conversations, collaborations, exhibitions, and studio tours. Our partnership with RedLine and funding from RAD yielded collaborative summer programming over three years. We spoke at the Mayor’s Latino Heritage Month Celebration at the Art Park’s event space, the Truss House. Alto Gallery collaborated with the Denver Public Library’s neighboring Bob Ragland Branch to overlap our programming schedules to offer jam-packed all-day experiences for visitors. We also worked with numerous food and drink vendors and sponsors to offer guests a variety of delicious cuisine and refreshments.

With generous funding from Bonfils-Stanton Foundation, Colorado Creative Industries, Denver Arts & Venues, and RiNo Art District, we have been able to not only provide free programming for the public but also support artists, curators, and guest speakers with honorariums. In an effort to support artists even more, we also increased their percentage of sales proceeds (artists receive 70% of sales, compared to the usual 50 – 60% in most spaces).

Alto Gallery is incredibly thankful for the time we’ve spent at the Art Park, but our lease is, unfortunately, not being renewed. We hope the RAD continues to offer exhibitions, free programming, and subsidized studio spaces for artists at the Art Park studios for years to come. We believe that rent-stable and affordable spaces like these are absolutely necessary for maintaining and growing the creative culture that makes the art district such a draw for visitors and businesses alike. Nevertheless, Alto Gallery is also thankful to be able to continue our mission, programming, and support of the Denver art community in a beautiful space close by.

Alto Gallery will be taking a break throughout July to transition to the new space and complete necessary buildout (including a new wall, lighting, painting, and floor refinishing). Please join us again on Friday, August 7, 6 – 10 PM at the grand opening of our new space (3773 Walnut St., Denver, CO) and opening reception of Light Wait, a duo exhibition featuring Mindy Bray and Jessica Forrestal, and guest curated by Drew Austin.

Denver and Dnipro Sign Historic Friendship City Agreement

Leaders from both cities sign partnership to strengthen cultural, civic, and international ties

Denver, CO — The City and County of Denver, through Denver Human Rights & Community Partnerships (HRCP), is proud to announce the signing of a Friendship City Agreement between Denver and the city of Dnipro, Ukraine. This marks Denver’s first Friendship City partnership since 2017.

The agreement was officially signed this morning by Denver Mayor Mike Johnston and Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov during a hybrid ceremony attended by representatives from Denver Sister Cities International (DSCI), Denver Economic Development & Opportunity (DEDO), HRCP, the Denver-Dnipro Friendship Committee, and Ukrainians of Colorado.

“Some of the strongest bonds between cities are built not through geography, but through shared values and the determination of the people who call them home,” said Denver Mayor Mike Johnston. “Denver is honored to establish this Friendship City relationship with Dnipro, and we look forward to building lasting connections between our communities, learning from one another, and strengthening the ties that bring people together across borders.”

The Friendship City Agreement creates a foundation for future collaboration between Denver and Dnipro through cultural exchange, civic engagement, and community partnerships. The agreement also represents an important first step toward the potential development of a formal Sister City relationship.

“This agreement is a reflection of the work of Ukrainians of Colorado and our partners at DSCI and in Dnipro,” said Mark Dillen, Chair, Denver-Dnipro Friendship Committee. “We thank Mayor Johnston, Mayor Filatov and their respective city governments for supporting this launch. Together with DSCI, we look forward to working with the citizens of our two great cities to broaden and deepen our growing connections.”

Denver Sister Cities International, which supports Denver’s global partnerships and citizen diplomacy efforts, connects Denver with approximately 20 million people across its 10 global partnership cities through cultural exchanges, youth leadership programs, humanitarian initiatives, and citizen diplomacy. In 2025 alone, DSCI organized and hosted 31 cultural exchanges, facilitated seven official delegations between Denver and partner cities, coordinated five student exchange programs involving 48 young ambassadors, and completed two humanitarian initiatives focused on medical partnerships and international assistance.

“The signing of this Friendship City agreement marks an important step in strengthening the ties between Denver and Dnipro,” said Riccardo Mazzeo, Chairman, Denver Sister Cities International. “Through cultural exchange, educational collaboration, economic engagement, and people-to-people connections, we reaffirm our shared commitment to international friendship, mutual understanding, and cooperation. Denver Sister Cities International is honored to help facilitate this partnership and looks forward to fostering meaningful relationships between our two communities for years to come.”

For more than 75 years, HRCP and Denver Sister Cities International have partnered to foster cross-cultural understanding and build meaningful connections that strengthen communities at home and abroad.

About HRCP: At Denver Human Rights & Community Partnerships, we are dedicated to protecting the human and civil rights of our community through advocacy, partnerships, and direct support. At the heart of our work is inclusiveness, building a Denver where everyone feels seen, valued, and empowered.

PRESS RELEASE: ZOBEL LAW AND DARREN O’CONNOR LAW WIN DECLARATORY JUDGMENT AGAINST DENVER FOR FAILURE TO PROVIDE BODY WORN CAMERA VIDEO OF VICTIM OF POLICE VIOLENCE WITHIN 21 DAYS.

Zobel Law and Darren O’Connor Law, on behalf of their client, sought a declaratory judgment from the District Court in Denver after Denver failed to provide body camera videos. Our client had sent a complaint and request for body camera videos via letter to Denver’s Chief of Police.

After several days beyond the 21-day deadline to produce the videos, Denver had still not done so. When Attorney O’Connor was able to find the appropriate contact at Denver that handles these records, he was told it would be another 21 days, even though more than 21 days had passed since Denver had received the letter, and even though such a delay violated the Law Enforcement Integrity Act. When Denver refused to budge, our client filed a lawsuit.

Denver filed a motion to dismiss for lack of standing, citing no cause of action under the Act. Further, Denver sought attorney fees for an alleged frivolous lawsuit.

In Response, our client argued that the Act has an implied cause of action, lest cities like Denver simply continue flouting the law.

The Court agreed with [Plaintiff], writing:

Denver does not contest [Plaintiff] is a member of the class of persons intended to benefit from C.R.S. § 24-31-902(2)(a) but contests legislative intent to create a private cause of action and whether an implied cause of action would be consistent with the purpose of the legislative scheme. C.R.S. § 24-31-902(2)(a) is not permissive but requires agencies to release footage within twenty-one days of a complaint. The Law Enforcement Integrity Act attempts to increase law enforcement integrity by increasing law enforcement transparency. It is contrary to legislative intent to deny an implicit cause of action based on C.R.S. § 24-31-902(2)(a) when C.R.S. § 24-31-902(2)(a) creates a requirement increasing law enforcement transparency and the cause of action only seeks compliance with existing statutory provisions. Furthermore, a civil remedy requiring compliance with the Law Enforcement Integrity Act is consistent with the purpose of the Act. The Court will not presume the Legislature intended to make an unenforceable statute when it wrote the Law Enforcement Integrity Act, and denying a cause of action seeking compliance with the law would make this provision essentially unenforceable.

(Emphasis added).

We and our client took a risk in order to advance the rights of all Coloradans to get access to body-worn camera videos within 21 days when the rights of such complainants are alleged to have been violated under the Law Enforcement Integrity Act. Our client, who was subjected to brutal, unlawful excessive force by law enforcement, and we are all pleased the Denver District Court agreed such that in the future, Denver is now on notice that it must comply with the Act or face potential litigation. Too often people are told to just comply with the law, but at Zobel Law and Darren O’Connor Law, we hold that this applies to the government as well.

Building a Legacy: City Park and Lafayette Farmers Markets Return with a Focus on Reinvesting in Communities

Running May Through October, Both Markets Serve as a Connection Point for Consumers, Producers, Chefs and Ingredients – Building a Stronger and More Purposeful Food System in Colorado

DENVER – March 31, 2026 – This May, City Park Farmers Market opens for its sixth season, and Lafayette Farmers Market returns for its second, with a joint vision of building stronger communities through food. Owners Peter and Margo Wanberg are focused on connecting the next generation of food producers and consumers to create a more collaborative and resilient local food system.

City Park Farmers Market has established itself as an anchor of the Denver community: a third space for neighbors, a destination for chefs, and a supportive platform for producers. In just one season, Lafayette Farmers Market has quickly gained momentum, with strong support from residents and local businesses and a clear path toward becoming a lasting community fixture.

The Wanbergs want to transcend the idea of farmers’ markets as only events and invite people to look at the bigger picture of what they’re growing: a community-led food ecosystem where markets serve as a catalyst – strengthening the connection between the people who grow food and the people who enjoy it.

This season reflects that growth. Lafayette is expanding its vendor count from 60 to 85, with City Park welcoming over 100+ vendors. Both have new farms, returning favorites, and an array of specialty food producers, giving marketgoers access to the same high-quality ingredients chosen and used by award-winning chefs and restaurants.

“This is where relationships start,” said Peter Wanberg. “People meet the folks growing their food, chefs connect directly with producers, and that changes how we think about food, where we buy it, and how it’s shared. That’s where real impact happens.”

Beyond shopping, City Park will feature monthly chef demos, a weekly run club, and regular educational programming. Both markets will have a regular schedule of live music from local acts.

Ultimately, the vision is long-term. By investing in local producers and fostering meaningful connections, the Wanbergs aim to build markets that not only serve their neighborhoods today but also help shape a more resilient and equitable food system for the future.

Market days, dates, hours, and locations are as follows:

City Park Farmers Market

Dates: Saturdays, May 2 through October 31, 2026

Hours: 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Denver’s Children’s Theatre Presents Pete the Cat: The Musical

February 26-March 22, 2026, for School Groups and the Community

SCFD Free Day and Accessibility Performance will be held on March 1

DENVER, January 27, 2026 – The Mizel Arts and Culture Center’s Denver Children’s Theatre announces its upcoming performances of Pete the Cat: The Musical, from February 26 to March 22, 2026, for school groups and the public. Performances will take place in the Elaine Wolf Theatre at the Mizel Arts and Culture Center in Denver. Public performances will be held on Sundays at 10 a.m. through March 22. An SCFD Free Day and Accessibility Performance will take place on Sunday, March 1.

Based on the popular book series by Kimberley and James Dean, Pete the Cat: The Musical follows Pete – a jazzy, guitar-playing, skateboard-riding cat – who assists his second-grade pal, Jimmy, who is attempting to conquer a lack of inspiration in art class. Along the way, Jimmy learns that challenges are never meant to be faced alone. Strength, creativity, and friendship are the remedy.

Tailored especially for pre-K through third-grade audiences, Pete the Cat: The Musical is a lively, 45-minute production filled with singing and dancing. The show features professional local Denver actors and is directed by Matt Zambrano, who returns to Denver Children’s Theatre after directing Tomás and the Library Lady in 2023. School groups can enjoy the show and take a behind-the-scenes “tech tour,” where students will meet the actors and learn about the technical elements that bring a production to life.

“Theatre can open a child’s eyes to experiences they’ve never encountered before and foster a broader perspective,” said Tim Campbell, program director at the Mizel Arts and Culture Center. “Seeing themselves reflected in characters on stage can help children know they are not alone. Theatre invites them to turn inward, learn who they are, and feel seen in how they move through the world.”

The SCFD Free Day and Accessibility Performance on March 1 at 10 a.m. offers an opportunity for the community to enjoy the production at no cost. Attendees can expect low-lights, audio descriptions, a calming sensory room, and ASL interpreters to ensure an inclusive and welcoming experience for all audience members. Tickets are free but must be reserved in advance.

Since 1997, the award-winning Denver Children’s Theatre has produced quality theatre for young audiences, presenting fully mounted main stage productions featuring beautiful sets and costumes, and featuring adult professional actors from the Denver area. The cast for Pete the Cat: The Musical includes Bekah Lynn Broas, Brandon Guzman, Bussy Gower, Damon Guerrasio, Izzy Enriquez, Kyle Lawrence, and Melissa Morris.

Rite & Rach: Under the baton of Devin Patrick Hughes, Mar. 1st

On Sunday, March 1st, The Boulder Symphony unleashes an afternoon of symphonic masterworks with Rite & Rach, featuring The Rite of Spring and Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor, Op. 30.

Under the baton of Devin Patrick Hughes, the orchestra performs Stravinsky’s groundbreaking, rhythmically explosive masterpiece alongside Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic Third Piano Concerto, performed by internationally recognized pianist Jiarui Cheng.

The program also includes Carter Pann’s Tiny Tattoo and Mikhail Glinka’s Overture to Ruslan and Lyudmila. This dynamic concert blends primal energy, sweeping lyricism, and technical brilliance — making it one of Boulder’s must-see classical music events of 2026.

Banned Books Club, Mar. 2

It is more important now than ever that we exercise our freedom of protest by reading banned books. Books and literature are the focal points of our culture and freedom. By reading banned books publicly and loudly, we protest the people who’ve banned them; those who actively seek to oppress and repress our knowledge and community. The Boulder Public Library at its Main Branch is hosting a reading of the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night by Mark Haddon. This murder mystery focuses on a young boy investigating the death of his neighbor’s dog. Throughout, he finds secrets his father had kept from him, a long-lost mother, and hope for a new day. This book is a cornerstone in neurodivergence, dealing with cheating and divorce, and solving the murder of a neighborhood pet.

American Otherness in Journalism: News Media Representations of Identity and Belonging was released last October and explores how mainstream news media helps construct Americanness during times of ICE raids and the narrowing scope of who belongs as an American. CU’s College of Communication, Media, Design, and Information invites you to explore narratives of national identity.

Monday, March 2nd, the community will be delivering a letter to the Mayor signed by 30 organizations calling on him to end the terrorization of houseless people on the streets.

Join us outside City Hall (1437 Bannock St.) at 3:30 pm or inside until 5:30 pm. We will be delivering the letter to the Mayor and speaking to the City Council.

Since Johnston ended the ‘House 1000’ initiative in Dec 2023, there has been a 150% increase in aggressive police enforcement just in ticketing of anti-houseless laws. This does not include the vast majority of enforcement, which is done through move-on orders and intimidation.

The hostile enforcement includes police approaching unhoused community members in an aggressive and menacing way, often grabbing and taking houseless people’s property right in front of them and maliciously destroying their personal property, calling them names, and other forms of abuse and terrorization.

The City has created a constant stress environment, and the aggressive, unprofessional, and often hostile enforcement has caused compounded trauma and direct injury to unhoused community members.

Houseless people are traumatized, tired, afraid, cold, suffering…from this treatment. They feel dehumanized and debased.

This enforcement includes telling people to move when they are simply standing on a public sidewalk, taking property from public spaces with no notice, and other violations of people’s constitutional rights.

We have interviews with 50 houseless people speaking about this street terrorization on our HAND Instagram page. You can hear community members share their stories to understand what is happening and how they are being impacted.

This inhumanity must stop. In the words of many houseless people, ‘treat us like humans.’

Contact: Chris Arend, Communications Director, Department of Natural Resources

303-264-8615

chris.arend@state.co.us

(Denver) — Today, Governor Jared Polis and the Colorado Department of Natural Resources announced appointments to the Ponderosa Mountain Pine Beetle Task Force, a new multi-agency task force created by Governor Polis through Executive Action to address a significant and expanding mountain pine beetle outbreak impacting ponderosa pine forests along Colorado’s Front Range.

“Colorado is at the forefront of reducing the impact of wildfires, floods, and protecting Colorado communities. By assembling our team of forestry experts and state and local officials we are taking action to deal with the impact of mountain pine beetles and helping to protect our forest and key water sources, and equipping homeowners to better protect their homes,” said Governor Polis.

Aerial forest health surveys conducted in 2025 by the USDA Forest Service and Colorado State Forest Service show increasing mountain pine beetle activity in ponderosa pine forests up and down the Front Range, with beetle-killed trees already visible along the U.S. 285 and I-70 corridors. Warmer temperatures and ongoing drought have created favorable conditions for outbreaks of bark beetles — trends expected to continue into the next decade.

The task force is charged with developing coordinated, science-based strategies to protect Colorado communities, forests, water resources, infrastructure, and the state’s outdoor recreation economy over the next decade.

“Pitch tubes” of resin where pine beetles have tunneled (Dan West, CFFS)

“The State of Colorado, including the Department of Natural Resources, Colorado State Forest Service, and the Division of Fire Prevention and Control, has heard the Governor’s clear call that the time is now to take action on our emerging mountain pine beetle outbreak along Colorado’s Front Range,” said Dan Gibbs, Executive Director, Colorado Department of Natural Resources. “We have assembled a diverse array of elected officials, federal, state, and local representatives, and ex officio member expertise for this Task Force to move together in a coordinated effort across land ownership and political boundaries to bring forth the necessary recommendations and actions for healthy forests and communities.”

Beetle-killed trees increase hazards for firefighters, recreationists, utility providers, and transportation corridors, and can alter and may even intensify wildfire behavior under certain conditions. These impacts from beetle-killed trees are particularly concerning in Front Range foothill communities where forests, homes, and critical infrastructure intersect, and wildfire risk is already high.

The task force will be co-chaired by Dan Gibbs; Mike Morgan, Director of the Division of Fire Prevention and Control; and Matt McCombs, State Forester and Director of the Colorado State Forest Service. The task force may add ex-officio members or seek input from subject matter experts where interested and as needed, within specific topics the task force seeks to evaluate.

TODAY: Colorado Worker Rights United to Host Worker Rights Event

Seeking to protect and expand worker rights this legislative session

DENVER – Hundreds of workers, union activists, business owners and grassroots organization leaders involved with Colorado Worker Rights United will announce efforts to protect and expand worker rights today at noon in the Colorado Capitol’s west foyer. The group will stand up against any attacks on farmworkers, tipped workers and any other workers in the state – and will support the 2026 Worker Protection Act.

When billionaire-backed corporations and the politicians who listen to them benefit from a system that keeps workers quiet, keeps wages low and makes it incredibly hard to form a union, corporate profits soar but leave families struggling with higher and higher costs. Unions are a key way to address the affordability crisis because when workers can stand together, wages go up, workplaces get safer, and families have a real chance to live and thrive in Colorado.

WHAT: Colorado Worker Rights United pro-worker legislative launch

WHY: Announce plans to protect and expand Colorado worker rights

WHO: Speakers will include:

Emcee: Rep. Javier Mabrey

Sen. Jessie Danielson

Sen. Julie Gonzales

Kylie Anderson, Starbucks barista

Josh Reitze, Alamo Drafthouse worker

Jatniel Bermudez, sheet metal worker (en español)

Sid Farber, business owner

Shad Murib, Colorado Democratic Party chair

WHEN: TODAY, Thursday, January 8, 2026, at noon

WHERE: Colorado State Capitol, west foyer, 200 E. Colfax Ave., Denver 80203

Colorado Worker Rights United is a coalition of labor unions and community groups building worker power through organizing and solidarity in Colorado. CWRU is dedicated to modernizing Colorado’s labor laws to make it easier to organize and empower Colorado workers, 70,000 of whom are currently organizing to form a union.

Editor’s Note: Press Releases are provided to Yellow Scene. In an effort to keep our community informed, we publish some press releases in whole.

From: Housekeys Action Network Denver

info@housekeysactionnetwork.com
(701) 484-2634

After HAND united several houseless families that then met with various representatives with the City of Denver – including City Council, the Department of Housing Stability, and the Denver shelter program – they found themselves still without solutions, without support, and instead, locked into a seemingly endless cycle of calls to a hotline that never picks up and occasional meetings with outreach workers that tell them nothing is available or they don’t qualify (despite living on the streets with children), and to keep calling.

Now, the families are demanding a meeting with the Mayor himself to address this Crisis and be part of the solution, so that Denver’s children always have somewhere safe to go.

Please read the attached letter sent to the Mayor, his staff, and City shelter/houseless program leadership and urge the Mayor to respond promptly. We MUST have a bottom moral line somewhere… NO CHILDREN IN THE STREETS!

Dear Mayor Mike Johnston,

We are writing to you today as a collective of houseless families currently living in Denver. Yes, Mayor, there are still children living on the streets. In fact, one of your own City directors has confirmed a 150% increase in houseless families between 2022 to 2024. We are:

Parents with a disabled child in a wheelchair,

Hardworking adults with jobs also enrolled in 3 different work-training programs simultaneously

A father who recently lost his job due to racism and xenophobia,

US citizens, including a single mother with a teen girl escaping domestic violence and attempting to access housing support for nearly 3 years now,

Another citizen who has been told her family can’t get housing because she has 7 children,

A newcomer migrant family without any friends or relatives to receive us,

People paying for weekly hotel stay that ends up costing more than an apartment while having less of the security, rights, and protections that housing and tenancy provide,

Parents with kids who can’t bathe regularly but still go to school everyday,

Families who have hidden under bridges and were told to move along without being connected to resources,

Parents who struggle maintaining jobs when your vehicle is your home and you have to leave work earlier to pick up your kids from school,

And many more – hundreds of us in need…

For each of us, the present system as it stands today has failed us… “It’s been very difficult to comprehend the sheer quantity of adversaries that we’ve met in this City.” We don’t have anywhere stable for ourselves and our children to live. We want you to know that we are not asking to be gifted anything unnecessarily, but to have support in orienting ourselves. We are asking you for an opportunity more than anything.

On Monday, March 17th, a number of us (though nowhere near the 400-600 families currently without housing) came to speak at City Council to let our representatives and community know that the road we’ve been told leads to housing is a dead end. Many of us families have been calling the Salvation Army Connection Center for months – multiple times per week, multiple times per day, in an attempt to seek emergency shelter. One mother of three kids states, “I called over 400 times and it was raining and snowing, and they still said they had no options”. Department of Housing and Stability (HOST) outreach workers themselves have told us that they can’t even get in touch with the Connection Center. For that reason, even after these families connected with outreach workers that Monday (though they have known some of these families for many months), every single family that spoke up left with no assistance – still struggling, still on the streets.

At this point, it feels as though we have spoken to nearly everyone in this system, often multiple times – as one parent said, “a lot of us are in this hole where they make promises and never fulfill them, like a partner who said that they’ll marry you but never do”… So all that is left for us is to talk to you, Mayor Johnston, and appeal to you not just as the Mayor of this City of opportunity, but as a fellow father who wants his children to have every chance to develop in a safe, supportive environment. As one dad put it, “if it was my City, I wouldn’t permit this, because they’re mistreating people who are desperate for support.” We understand you have a difficult job, and the conversation we want to have with you is one regarding how to most effectively address these barriers, because “if the resources are so limited, then we need to utilize them in the most effective way” – wouldn’t you agree?

The Salvation Army Connection Center does not need more workers – we need a better solution. We, as the families at the heart of this issue, do not want to be “part of the problem, but part of the solution!!!” We ask that you let us know when you would be next available for a virtual meeting to hear directly from us regarding the barriers that keep us in this cycle, to better understand our reality, and include us in the process towards a solution. Please send us some dates and times that you would be available to meet – please keep in mind those of us who work during the day and have to pick up our children after school.

Thank you, and may we commit to protecting the children – ALL the children – of this great City. It takes a village!

Sincerely,
Denver’s unhoused parents and children
