City of Boulder Celebrates 6th Annual Arts in the Park Series

Boulder Ballet kicks off the summer series on Saturday, May 30, with tickets on sale now.

BOULDER, Colo. – The City of Boulder’s Arts in the Park event series returns to the Glen Huntington Bandshell for a vibrant blend of art and cultural events.

“Arts in the Park events are great opportunities for summer fun while supporting the local and independent artists who help shape Boulder’s creative spirit,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Ali Rhodes. “Through these free and low-cost events, we welcome people to Boulder’s downtown parks in meaningful ways and make arts experiences accessible for all.”

This year’s signature performances by Boulder Ballet, Boulder Symphony, and Arts Hub, alongside additional free community spotlight events throughout the season:

Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31: Boulder Ballet (ticketed)

Sunday, June 7: Dizzy with a Dame (free)

Sunday, June 21: Pepe Cetina (free)

Saturday, July 4: Boulder Symphony (ticketed)

Saturday, July 11: Prana in the Park (free)

Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18: Shared Atmospheres (free)

Sunday, Aug. 2: Beyond Academia Free Skool (free)

Sunday, Aug. 23: Arts Hub (tickets available at a later date)

Ticketed events are $10 per person (with a $2.51 service fee), proceeds support each local performing arts group. Tickets and additional event participation details can be found at boulderartsinthepark.com. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for the summer. Tedeschi Trucks Band @ Red Rocks Amphitheater

For two nights, the Tedeschi Trucks Band will bring their unique blend of rock and blues to Morrison, Colorado. Rayland Baxter and Langhorne Slim @ The Fox Theater

Rayland Baxter, an indie musician whose music leans more towards alternative country, is touring in celebration of his most recent album, “If I Were a Butterfly.” The album was created while baxter lived alone in an abandoned rubberband factory, honing in on his connectedness with the natural world. Also performing is Longhorn Slim, a musician whose music spans a range from folk to country to blues. Langhorne’s music can be heard in major movie soundtracks, as well as in dive bars. Tickets start at $46 through Z2 Entertainment.

Red Wanting Blue @ Roots Music Hall

Deemed Midwest Rock Heroes, Red Wanting Blue have been performing over the past two decades, moving up from the indie rock scene to playing on NPR and Letterman. The band is touring in honor of their most recent studio album, “The Wanting.” Labeled as powerful and authentic, reviewers have likened the lead singer to an early Phil Collins. The band states this is their most collaborative album to date, making it a one-of-a-kind show. Tickets start at $29 through Eventbrite.

Rhiannon Giddens and The Olde Time Revue @ Chautauqua Amphitheater

Rhiannon Giddens has made a beautiful career out of studying and playing historical folk-inspired music. Not only does Giddens have two well-deserved Grammy wins, but she has also received a MacArthur Genius Grant, a Pulitzer Prize, and has composed music for the main stage of ballet, opera, and television. Her music is most well-known for her groups The Carolina Chocolate Drops and Our Native Daughters. Tickets start at $56 through Z2 Entertainment.

The Colorado Shakespeare Festival @ the University of Colorado

The yearly event at the University of Colorado, the theater festival, has taken over the campus every year since 1958. The festival works to keep the spirit of Shakespeare alive through artistry and education. All plays are performed outside, under the night sky. This year, the plays shown will be The Tempest, Richard II, and Doctor Faustus. Tickets start at $26 through CU Presents.

The Body’s Still Warm: Online Dating for Divorced, Desperate, and Everybody Else @ The Dairy Arts Center

A comedic play about a 62-year-old woman who is entering the online dating world. A feel good, and laugh-out-loud performance, the play follows the hero through her struggles of dating as she comes to find friendship and community in the world around her. Tickets start at $11.50 through The Dairy Arts Center.

You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown @ The Arts Hub

A family-friendly classic, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown is playing three nights, hosted by The Arts Hub. The play follows the classic adventures of the Peanuts gang, as Charlie Brown works his way through friendship with the help of his pal Snoopy. Tickets are available through The Art Hub in Lafayette.

Oklahoma Dinner Theater @ Jesters Dinner Theater and Performing Arts

The classic musical, Oklahoma, is set to end its weekly run. With a weekend performances, you can enjoy dinner and a show while taking in the old-timey performances of a farm girl falling in love. The show is hosted by the Longmont Theater Company.

Opening October 11, 2024, this dazzling show will run through October 20, 2024, offering a joyous and heartwarming experience for theatergoers of all ages.

The Prom is a heartfelt story of a group of down-on-their-luck Broadway actors who band together to help a high school student in a small town take her girlfriend to the prom. This timely and uplifting musical explores themes of love, acceptance, and standing up for what’s right, all set to an infectious pop score.

Directed by Lexie Lazear, this production will bring together a dynamic cast of local talent, stunning choreography, and a vibrant set design that captures the spirit of the original Broadway show. With its message of inclusivity and celebration of diverse identities, The Prom is more than just a show — it is a call for empathy, kindness, and understanding.

“We are incredibly excited to bring The Prom to our community,” said Andrew Krimm, Executive Director of The Arts Hub. “At its core, this musical is about embracing who you are and supporting others in doing the same. ASIAN PACIFIC MUSIC AND DANCE

Join us for an evening of music and dance from the Asian South Pacific! Featuring the hula dancing of Keaka O’Kalani and the shimmering sound of the Balinese gamelan, this evening promises to be a delightful cultural immersion!

What is hula dancing? Hula is a mimetic dance form. The dance moves are meant to represent different things, people, or places. Put together, the dance moves create a story told through dance. Originally a religious dance performed on the islands of Hawai’i, hula has spread across the world.

What is a gamelan? A gamelan is the traditional orchestra ensemble of the islands of Bali and Java, in Indonesia. It consists of various gongs, drums, and tuned metal percussive instruments, and, depending on the size of the gamelan, can be played by one or multiple players. The gamelan is used in religious ceremonies, to accompany theatrical performances, and is played on its own for entertainment.

Bare is the dramatic and poignant story of teenagers struggling with their identities at a co-ed Catholic boarding school. As senior year comes to an end, Peter, Jason, Matt, Ivy, and Nadia must navigate the challenges of love, sexuality, and religion as they rehearse a school production of Romeo and Juliet. The consequences of their choices will be their cross to bear for the rest of their lives.

Each show of Bare will be co-hosted by a local organization dedicated to the mental health of LGBTQ+ youth. Audience members will have the opportunity to join these groups for events surrounding each show, and to learn about their advocacy work. The Arts HUB is a proud “safe space” for the LGBTQ+ community, and as such we are proud to collaborate with these local organizations to advance their mission to support and protect local LGBTQ+ youth.

SEICENTO BAROQUE

Designed for all ages, Seicento Baroque Ensemble’s presentation is a playful and interactive demonstration of 18th century music using excerpts from the J.S. THE FRONT RANGE KIDS FILM FESTIVAL

Celebrating the child’s point of view, The Front Range Kids Film Festival will present short works by both child and adult filmmakers who share in this spirit of innocent creativity. Kids will have the opportunity to show their work to their friends and family, as well as members of their community. Adult filmmakers will be able to reach kids in their community, experience their reactions, and answer their questions. On the evening of the festival, there will be fun activities, photographs, food vendors, and films will be shown on the big screen in the theater. Filmmakers will introduce their works to the audience, who will vote for their favorite entries. And, of course, there will be prizes for winning filmmakers!

What happens when your wishes come true? Is “happily ever after” really so happy? In Into the Woods, fairy-tale characters Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (of Beanstalk fame!) and others must wrestle with these questions as they journey through the forest of our imagination. In the Junior version, the script and score of this Broadway classic have been adapted to make the show more accessible to teen performers.

The Arts HUB Showstoppers creates theatre by children for children. This program is an intensive, semester-long, educational workshop for performers ages 11-16. Our students have the rare opportunity to work with theater professionals, who direct, choreograph, and design the show. We hope The Arts HUB Showstoppers will inspire children in our community to engage with the arts.

Over-confident grifter Harold Hill has the perfect scam: he rides into town, promising to whip the local youth into shape by forming a boys’ band–and once he convinces the townspeople to invest in musical instruments, he runs off with the money. But when he arrives in River City, Iowa, he finds himself falling in love with the local music teacher, and the whole scam is in jeopardy. In the KIDS version, the script and score of this Broadway classic have been adapted to make the show more accessible to young performers.

BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Join The Arts HUB this summer for a “tale as old as time”– about a brave, intelligent young woman, a magical castle full of talking objects, and a recalcitrant beast who must learn how to love. This classic story about true love will enchant audiences young and old!

Our full-scale musical production will include a cast of adult and child performers from our community. All the songs from the beloved 1991 Disney animated movie will be featured, including “Beauty and the Beast,” “Be Our Guest,” “Gaston,” and “Something There.” Audiences are encouraged to come in costume, and to participate in fun, engaging activities for all ages before and after the show!

The Arts HUB Players is a new, semi-professional theatre troupe founded in 2022. It is the mission of The Arts HUB to offer an accessible, equitable, and high-quality theatre experience, both to our audiences and to the community members participating in our productions.

Keeping performance and music alive in our communities

As we continue our Heroes series, we turn this month to our stages. These rooms are sacred places, the places we go to get lost in a crowd, to share a story, to learn and love and dance and cry. These are rooms bathed in cool light, filled with exalted souls, the hearts of strangers intertwined and filled with moments that will never again exist in quite the same way but live on because they were shared. They are the places we spend nights with our friends and lovers. They exist for us, the audience, clapping hands, raised voices, full hearts. No matter how heavy life can get, we have our stages to go to to let the worries of the rest of the world fall away for a few hours so we can breathe and laugh and remember what it is to be weightless. The people that run these venues do so for that reason, because they themselves know the power of performance and how important it is for people to have places to go to get a little lost. 

We spoke to 9 representatives from vastly different kinds of venues. Some are solely for music, some for theater and opera, some for comedy, some a mix of it all. While the purposes of these spaces might be quite disparate, each person we spoke with truly believes in the importance of music and performance in their communities.

David Weingarden spoke to this idea quite beautifully. Weingarden is the booking manager for z2 Entertainment, Colorado’s largest independent music promotion company which is responsible for the management of Boulder’s Fox Theater and Boulder Theater as well as Fort Collins’ historic Aggie Theater, among many others. Also a member of the Colorado Independent Venue Association, Weingarden told me, “Art, music and culture, that’s the most important thing to a community. I think that not only because it just makes it different and less homogenized, but it really brings communities together. There’s not much better than hanging out with your friends and going to see live music, especially with a band that you love.” He went on to highlight the importance of venues from an economic perspective, describing a study done in Chicago that found that, for every dollar spent on concert tickets, 12 dollars are given to the community. Before a concert, people tend to get drinks and food. We take Ubers and hire babysitters. This all serves to support the community as a whole.

“Art, music and culture, that’s the most important thing to a community. I think that not only because it just makes it different and less homogenized, but it really brings communities together. There’s not much better than hanging out with your friends and going to see live music, especially with a band that you love.”

Grace Barrett, the communications director for Planet Bluegrass in Lyons, echoed this idea. She told me, “Planet Bluegrass is somewhere that people can come and escape and be their best selves. Philosophically, it is so important for people to have that outlet.” She also spoke about how the venue brings in attention and business for Lyons, feeding the soul of the community while also supporting it financially.

This theme of community support recurred throughout all of the conversations I had. Kenny Vasko, who runs the practice and recording studio Dog House Music in Lafayette with his wife, Liz, recently threw the first ever Lafayette Music Festival. This was a massive boon for the town as it took place across 6 different venues and featured local acts, shining a light on the incredible musicians that call Boulder County home. This was the culmination of years of work for the Vaskos. Kenny told me, “I always want to be in the business of making people happy” before telling me how Liz, who has a degree in community development, was the first to truly recognize Dog House’s potential. Kenny told me, “When she first saw Dog House, the first thing she thought was ‘wow, this is a community.’” They then put their efforts into using their business to support their home and the musicians they share it with as much as possible.

Boulder’s Roots Music Project is a non-profit that dedicates itself to this idea. Run by musicians and music lovers from Boulder County, Roots is a music incubator that advocates for social justice while providing a platform for local musicians. I spoke with Ian Steele, the sound and stage manager for the organization. A life-long musician himself and a truly cool guy, he told me:

“Our philosophy is to foster and grow the music community in Boulder and the whole Front Range. To do that is to connect fans to artists and music professionals, and venues to clients. We are very lucky to have the family that we do and the connections that we have.”

Motus Theater is another group that combines performance with social issues. I had the opportunity to speak with producing director Rita Valente-Quinn and program director and performer Armando Peniche. Both immigrants and incredibly warm people, they told me about Motus’s mission. Valente-Quinn said, “Our mission is to create original theater, conversation about critical issues of our time, and build alliances across segments of our community and country.” Motus uses monologues to tell the stories of immigrants and the effects of colonialism in America. Peniche discovered Motus by participating in a currently ongoing series titled “UndocuAmerica,” an autobiographical monologue project in which young leaders with DACA status collaborate with Motus’ Artistic Director, Kirsten Wilson, to write and perform their stories. Motus and visual artist Edica Pacha collaborated in a mural project that featured the “UndocuAmerica” monologists in murals put up around Denver and Boulder in the summer of 2022.

This sense of liberation through performance was another recurring theme in these conversations. Melissa McGowan, executive director of Lafayette’s multimedia space the Arts Hub, described having performance in her blood, saying “[her] family started a summer theater for children” that she worked at as a youth. Since, she’s worked in performance spaces from a young age and has brushed with just about every type of performance there is in her career, including haunted houses and renaissance fairs. McGowan incorporates her extensive experience into the Arts Hub as it is home to dance troupes, community plays, educational shows for kids, and much more.

Faye Lamb, president of the Longmont Theater, and Daniela Acosta, founder of the Boulder Opera Company, also hold performance deep in their souls and have for quite some time. Each of them spoke about their illustrious careers with humility and a kind of reverence. Lamb told me she has “a tremendous passion for the creation of art. I look at these as art. I don’t use the word entertainment, but people need a place to go and then tap their toe or be happy.”

Acosta grew up in Spain where she discovered her love of opera but didn’t start performing professionally until moving to New York. She now uses her company to share that love with people who otherwise may not have been exposed to the art form, striving to make it accessible for the curious but not fully sold. She told me:

“I love to tell a story through singing and acting and emceeing and moving people in a way that no other art can do.”

Steve Long, who owns Louisville Underground, and Marc Gitlin, owner of Nissi’s in Lafayette, understand a simple truth about owning venues: they are places for people to go and just have a good time. Louisville Underground features a wide variety of acts. They host comedy nights, open mics, improv, local bands, Halloween silent discos, and much more. Long told me:

“We’re a small intimate venue. How many friendships and connections are made through people attending events?”

Gitlin furthered this sentiment. Nissi’s just moved from it’s previous location to a new one and revamped itself in the process. A big room ready to be filled with music, Nissi’s features local music acts, comedians, as well as speakers and activists that raise money for social causes. Gitlin spoke to me about the need for variety in a more suburban place such as Lafayette, saying:

“I have to be eclectic, because we’re not in an urban area. I reach different demographics that enjoy different things. I noticed venues that were mostly rock bars would be limited to 50 or 60 people. I found early on about a location that you can’t depend on one kind of thing.” 

These people keep light alive when things get dark. They provide us joy and inspiration, stories and music, that which defines a person, that shapes character. Give it up for them.

In today’s newsletter, we feature the three Black women leaders who will present their stories about their experiences of racism and injustice perpetrated by the criminal legal system.

Brenda Cisse is the Founder and Executive Director of Mary Magdalene Refuge Center for Women. She uses her own experiences of re-entry, childhood sex trauma, human trafficking/sex industry, and drug addiction of 25+ years to support women with these experiences. In her Boundless Truth monologue, Brenda asks important questions about accountability: Whose crimes count and whose do not? Whose lives count as being important and whose do not? What kind of costs and expenses are counted as legitimate? And when will the Department of Corrections take accountability for its own crimes?

Terri House has dedicated her life and career to helping others overcome barriers and expand their access through education, advocacy, and engagement. With an MA in Nonprofit Management, she currently serves as the Wrap Around Service Director with Launch Network. In her Boundless Truth monologue, Terri recounts the experience of going through a job interview knowing that the background check would reveal her criminal record. How far back should she go to help HR understand her personal history? The 13th Amendment, or earlier?

Cynthia Randall is an extraordinary family advocate, a champion for social justice, and a community connector with over 19 years of experience in restorative justice facilitation, human services, and program development. Cynthia’s Boundless Truth monologue, about being denied making a phone call from jail to protect a child, is a call for greater humanity in the criminal legal system, and a reflection on the mental health challenges facing not only inmates but also officers of the law.

Lafayette, CO – For decades, the pastoral town of Lafayette, Colorado has been known as a haven for artists and musicians, from funk and jazz to hard rock and Latin. Our artsy little town supports recording studios, music shops, music schools, music-based nonprofits, and plenty of places to listen to some stellar live shows. The demand for live music in Colorado has never been greater. That’s why, for one special day in October, five of our largest music venues are banding together to launch the first-ever Lafayette Music Fest. Organized by Rock For The People, a local 501(c)(3) organization, the Lafayette Music Festival (October 8, 2022) invites live music lovers from all over the Front Range to discover what the Lafayette music scene is all about. One wristband not only gets you into all five venues for the day but also comes chock full of discounts at shops and restaurants throughout Lafayette. More details, including the official lineup and ticketing info, will be released in the coming weeks.
