“Boulders block road in Boulder Canyon near Boulder according to Boulder County Sheriff’s Office.”

• PRIDE is changing in Boulder County, as events are consolidated. Out Boulder County announced its plans to celebrate Pride next month, with a conjoining of Longmont and Boulder Pride events for a week of activities betweenJune 7 and 13. The week of celebrating will culminate June 13, where there will be three motorcade parades in Longmont, Boulder and Lafayette.

• Please visit public lands responsibly. “With visitation to Front Range trails expected to increase over the next several weeks, a group of eight federal, state, and local Colorado land managers remind visitors to recreate responsibly on area public lands. Recreating outdoors is an important way of life for all Coloradans. Public land agencies need everyone’s cooperation to help them sustain enjoyable outdoor experiences and to preserve natural areas for future generations,” a Boulder County press release exhorted.

• Mask on, Mask off, per new state rules which Boulder County officials adopted. Are we back to normal yet? Rules continue to vary across industry, intra-industry, and from county to county. Best bet is to think not only of yourself, but those you come in contact with, who may not have the vaccine, or may not be able to get it. Boulder County Public Health amended its mask order to require face coverings in certain settings – at schools, child care facilities, healthcare settings, on public transportation and at long-term care facilities regardless of vaccination status – and extended it through June 10.

• Boulder DA’s office has again added more charges to the Boulder King Soopers mass shooting case, “with 13 more attempted murder charges and 47 crime of violence sentence enhancers for use of a deadly weapon on each of the attempted murder charges, bringing the total counts in the case to 115” according to a press release.

• A 33 year-old woman was rescued after a 20 ft. fall, causing injuries to both ankles. This is a reminder to be safe as we re-engage the world and get outdoors as Spring and Summer outdoor adventures really take off.

• Two free shuttle bus services to popular local recreation and open space areas in Boulder County return for the season on Memorial Day weekend and will continue through the Summer, ending on different dates in the Fall. The Hessie Trailhead Shuttle and the Eldorado Canyon State Park Shuttle are free shuttle buses that offer public lands visitors a convenient way to travel. Check boco.org/shuttles for info.

A brief chat with Michael Schenker

German guitar maestro Michael Schenker has shredded with UFO, the Scorpions and MSG, and now he’s back with the Temple of Rock project. The group plays the Buffalo Rose at the end of April, so we had a chat with Schenker.G

Yellow Scene: Tell us about the Temple of Rock – this is different to an MSG show, right?

Michael Schenker: Absolutely. MSG is basically everything I did with Gary Barden plus some other stuff – it was my mid years to do whatever I wanted and to experiment with music, and to be in that rhythm of tour-album-tour-album. I was just doing my stuff. The Temple of Rock is my third stage. The first stage was developing as a guitarist, to focus on self-expression and to make my music a contribution. After I rejoined the Scorpions and helped them out, opening the doors for America, they went ahead and I withdrew and did MSG. With Temple of Rock, I felt that I needed to be back in the loop of rock ‘n’ roll. I was having a lot of fun on stage. I used to have stage-fright, but all of a sudden I was feeling good on stage and that was a result, I guess, of living, learning, and developing. I feel I’ve been preserved for this time. With Temple of Rock, I do a summit. It’s based on the most popular music that I’ve been involved with, plus the original music of Temple of Rock. The idea is to have Temple of Rock develop into it’s own entity.

YS: There are three Scorpions in the band with you?

MS: Its the original “Rock You Like a Hurricane” rhythm section of the Scorpions, Herman Rarebell and Francis Buchholz, then Doogie White from Rainbow, Wayne Findlay from MSG, and myself.

YS: Do you like playing Colorado?

MS: I like going everywhere. Anywhere that there’s people who want to hear what we do, that’s where I want to be.

YS: What can we expect from the set?

MS: We play the most popular music of my involvement, from Scorpions to UFO to MSG, and then of course we play highlights from Temple of Rock.

YS: When the tour’s over, what’s next?

MS: I’m going to carry on having fun touring. That’s what I love doing now. I love to be creative, touring, doing festivals. We’ll play Europe, Japan, Australia, South America, Asia, etc. This going to be a long tour.

British classic rockers UFO are back with a new album, A Conspiracy of Stars, so we had a chat with new-boy bassist Rob De Luca about the band and everything going on within it.B

Yellow Scene: Tell me about the album and how the band has changed since the last one…

Rob De Luca: There are three big changes from the last record. The first one is, it’s a different producer. We went with Chris Tsangarides – he’s known for his work with Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Thin Lizzy, so he’s definitely a rock guy and a good choice. He did a really great job, so that’s a big change from the previous records that were done with the same German producer. The second change is we rehearsed it live – we worked up the songs live in a room. The third thing is that I’m on this record and I wasn’t on the previous records.

YS: UFO doesn’t have any tour dates announced yet?

RDL: We just did Europe and on Tuesday we leave for the UK tour. I think we should do the US in 2015 but they haven’t announced anything yet.

YS: You’ve been in since 2008 – how does it feel to step into a band with such a history?

RDL: I think I bring a lot of solidity and character to the bass playing. That’s definitely my strength. Those are simple but very important aspects of being a rock bass player.

YS: What had you done before?

RDL: I’ve been touring with Sebastian Bach on and off for the last ten years, I’m an original member of a band called Spread Eagle, I played with George Lynch, I was a Blackheart with Joan Jett, I played in Helmet – a lot of stuff. It’s all good stuff – I feel very blessed, I work very hard, and I try to make the most of opportunities.

YS: How do you see the band progressing now that you’re in the ranks?

RDL: The guys are in their mid-60’s and up. There are still three original members in the band which is pretty impressive. That gives it a lot of honesty. It’s still consistent to their legacy. I hope we’re still going for a while. I feel that we’ll make another record and it’ll be great. I hope we have a lot of years left. This record, A Conspiracy of Stars, is getting really great reviews, saying that we’re back to the classic form of UFO. I think we’re on to a good, strong formula right now and I’m excited about it.

The Curious Skeptic

J. Allen Danelek isn’t a ghost hunter or a UFO conspiracy theorist or a hypnotist specializing in past life regressions, but he has written the book on the subject. All of them, in fact.

Several years ago, around the age of 40, Danelek started asking himself what he wanted to be when he grew up. The answer that came back to him was that he wanted to be a paranormal writer. But Danelek wasn’t interested in writing run-of-the-mill conspiracy theory books.

“I wanted something that was a little bit more objective for people who weren’t entirely decided,” he said. “I try to present the topics from different perspectives, and that is a niche that hasn’t really been done that well. You have ardent supporters and debunkers and not much in between.”

His first books about the city of Atlantis and reincarnation were well-received and garnered support from the paranormal community, but his most recent works, UFOs: The Great Debate and Messages: The World’s Most Documented Extraterrestrial Contact Story, which he co-authored with widely known abductee Stan Romaneck, have not been as well received as he would have hoped.

“Sometimes when you do niche books, you have to be careful not to alienate both sides,” he laughed.

That’s because Danelek takes a very open-minded approach to writing his books: not starting with the premise that UFOs (or ghosts, or reincarnation) exist or that they don’t but following the Socratic method and asking question upon question until he hits on a conclusion or a kernel of truth.

Our conversation turned to the real question: Does he believe aliens exist?

“Considering the vastness of space and the staggering size not only of our own galaxy but of the universe itself, I should be astonished (and not a little disappointed) if we were the only advanced life in the universe. Even the majority of scientists agree with me on this one,” he said.

But does he believe that they are visiting Earth and abducting human subjects? That’s where things tend to become a lot more difficult to say. Danelek tries to answer these questions from a logical standpoint as often as possible.

“It’s not that I don’t believe,” he insisted, “it’s just that I don’t take people’s word for it automatically. I like to have them show me something solid, or at least present a rational argument. And just because I put forth an idea in my books, doesn’t mean I necessarily believe it myself.”
