The sun is shining a little brighter, the water is glistening like a million diamonds, and the mountains are surely calling – yup, it’s summertime in Boulder County.

Before you head out to the trails, lakes, and rock walls this summer, we want to make sure you’re prepared with the best gear on the market for whatever outdoor activity floats your boat (or, in our case, kayak).

A poorly-made piece of gear can throw off your entire outdoor experience. But with glamorous advertising and a reasonable price tag, who’s to know any better? Before you head outside with your backpack full of less than exemplary products.

Some of the worst offenders are not only poorly made, but entirely impractical when out in the elements.

Among some horrid camping gear is any sort of wearable sleeping bag. Don’t do this to yourself! The Musuc Selk’bag sleeping bag has scathing reviews across the internet, and Outside Magazine has openly bashed the Poler Napsack (leg- and arm-holes included) for being a novelty item rather than providing protection or insulation, two of the most important sleeping bag qualities.

If you’d like to be mocked mercilessly as well as unprotected from the sun, check out the Solar Safari Cool Hat. No, please don’t do that, because this hat is anything but cool, and the cheap solar-powered fan is only a nuisance when it comes to being active under the sun. Not to mention that a fan is not a replacement for plenty of sunscreen and protective headgear, two safety essentials out on the trails, lakes, and anywhere else under the sun’s glare.

The bottom line is to make sure that you’ve invested in pieces that will serve you well and keep you safe every step of the way.

We’ve talked to the awesome gear experts and seasoned outdoors-people of BoCo to see what their favorite tried-and-true gear is that will be the safest and most effective for you to get out there and conquer the great outdoors worry-free.

The first recorded piece of outdoor equipment was a lot more hardcore than you would think – a personal flotation device made of inflated goat skins (!) was created around 860 B.C. when enemies of the Assryians used them to flee in the Euphrates River, according to Outdoor Magazine. Yikes.

A good bit later came the first sleeping bag, insulated with reindeer hair and kapok – it was 1899, after all – by Ajungilak, a European gear brand that still exists today! They still make sleeping bags, sans animal hair and tree bits.

The beloved spork made its debut in 1874, innovating the outdoor dining experience forever, and making sure historic and modern explorers alike could eat their baked beans AND potatoes without switching utensils. 1892 brought the Primus stove, which was the first kerosene stove with a pressurized burner, so no one was forced to eat said potatoes raw.

Even though some of these pieces of gear are a bit incomprehensible for modern day use, they supplied the essentials: safety, warmth, protection from the elements. More importantly, they set the stage for what has become an explosion of outdoor gear products for every activity imaginable, designed with safety, durability, and comfort in mind.

In Boulder County, we’re fortunate to be an absolute mecca of outdoorsmanship. With access to plenty of natural gorgeousness comes tons of outdoor adventure opportunities, making us a key location for stores like REI, Moosejaw, Patagonia, and more. We’ve talked to experts from some of these stores, as well as a handful of Colorado’s most passionate and dedicated outdoors-people to get the scoop on the gear YOU need for summer fun.

Whether you’re a hiking newbie or a seasoned trail-goer, check out our gear guide to make sure you’re all ready for summer fun.

We’re not going to tell you about every little thing that happened this past beer soaked weekend, except to say that if you weren’t tipsy in Brohn Park this weekend with the thousands that came out for Burning Can Beer Festival and Lyons Outdoor Games, you really missed out. Truth be told, we were there for the beer fest: 75 breweries from Colorado (and a few from out of state) – see the whole list here – came together to share suds, hock hops, and make a whole slew of sun tanned, sun burnt, trucker hat wearing, sunglass rocking, Brikenstock and flip-flopping revelers hoppy. Sorry, I meant happy.

If you haven’t heard of Burning Can, shame on you. Ok, fine, we forgive you. It’s actually a pretty new festival, but quickly growing in popularity. Here’s a quick description of BCF from the website:

Craft Beer & Rocky Mountain Revelry
The 2018 Colorado Burning Can Fest at the Lyons Outdoor Games is the perfect weekend for lovers of adventure, beer, music, and camping. Nestled at the base of the Rocky Mountains, Lyons Colorado boasts a natural playground for runners, riders, kayakers, dogs, and climbers. Featuring adventures to see and watch, a mountain-side beer fest with close to 100 breweries, world class athletes, beautiful camping, and a huge concert, the Burning Can Fest at the Lyons Outdoor Games is quickly growing to be one of the top outdoor lifestyle festivals in the U.S.

A quick rundown of the breweries we were able to get to (no, we couldn’t drink through them all, but damnit, we tried) includes: starting with a dozen samples at the Oskar Blues blind taste test booth – data collection can only improve beer – before we began our crawl with Sanitas Brewing. We quickly followed that up with Vail Brewing Company (the only brewery in Vail, they tell me), Wibby Brewing from Longmont, Telluride Brewing Company, Stem Ciders (Denver and Lafayette), Steamworks Brewing Co from Durange, Two Roads Brewing Co from Stratford, CT, Tommyknocker from Idaho Springs, Ska Brewing, Roadhouse Brewing and, before a much needed hydration and digestion session, Renegade Brewing Co from Denver.

Shout out the organizers for several epic options for keeping bellies full while drinking. We had the burritos and, much later, way too much pizza.

Following our recovery period and after gathering strength, we recommitted ourselves to drinking our fair share of beer. Our second session included River North Brewery (Denver), Outer Range Brewing Co (Frisco, CO), Odyssey Beerwerks Brewery & Taproom (Arvada), Ninkasi Brewing Co (all the way from Eugene, OR), New Planet Brewery (Boulder), New Image Restaurant and Brewery (Arvada), and Nebraska Brewing Co from, you guessed it, Nebraska.

Finally, a huge shoutout to Gravity Brewing Company in Louisville who hosted our team after hours and hooked up some brautwerst. Thanks to Sandra and Julie for making friends with Gravity and getting us the inside track. Their beers are amazing and we’ll definitely be following up with a site visit for a more robust, shall we see, examnition of the offerings.

Ok. Done. Well, close. Last, to all the athletes who impressed with incredible feats of strength and endurance, including our four legged dock dogs who made a heckuva splash, good job. Congratulations. And we’ll see you next year.

As we refresh ourselves, why not refresh our homes, too?

There is no better feeling than loving the place you live. We know you love Boulder as much as we do, and we want to help ensure your home makes you feel the same way.

We’ve talked to builders, buyers, and long-term residents to find out what the hottest home trends are right now in the kitchen, bath, and basement.

Boulder is in a building boom and that means tons of new ideas for updating your home, whether you’re a brand new homeowner or a seasoned pro. Not only will you be totally inspired by these Boulder home goals, you’ll find some amazing tips that make them work best for you.

Whether your home style is super contemporary, Tuscan, modern farmhouse, or anything in between, here you’ll find the most important remodeling trends for your home – and even some juicy insider tips to get you ahead of the game. We’ll also tell you the most important room to update in your home – is it the kitchen, bath, or basement? Keep reading, we’ve done the dirty work to obtain all the answers you seek and more.

Photo courtesy of Ute Vandenberghe Interior Design

Let There Be Light – Lots of It

There’s no question about it – plenty of light is a must-have in your BOCO home. Not only does it brighten up the space, but it also makes any room feel larger and more welcoming. With 300 days of sunshine to enjoy each year, you should be able to enjoy every ounce of it throughout your space.

According to John Joseph of Phoenix Home Remodeling, light is the ultimate trend for all parts of the home right now. Of course it’s important to have natural light from larger windows and skylights, but he recommends including lighter-colored home elements like cabinets and paint as well. This helps to enhance the light and truly bring the space to life. Just imagine that sunshine beaming down on your huge frameless shower from the bath skylight – does it get any more luxurious?

PSST… INSIDER TIP: Joseph says that in the kitchen, lighter cabinetry colors are becoming increasingly popular. Show off that perfect contrast with beautiful dark-stained wood floors for a complete modern kitchen look.

Kitchen expert Diane White from Studio3 agrees that tons of light in every form is a must. Very artistic light fixtures are being seen in kitchens and finished basement and homeowners are including large pendants instead of smaller light fixtures that fade into the background. It’s important to highlight this kind of space with bold yet neat statements for a complete look. (So that ‘it’s lit,’ as the kids say.)

Lighting can be customized to fit your personality as well as that of your home. Boulder homeowner Erik Henry couldn’t be more thrilled about having enhanced his new home with plenty of light throughout the interior. He utilizes both floor-to-ceiling windows as well as unique light fixtures that pop against a bright background. “I find it’s both pleasant to live in but also looks great [to others] when a unit has a bright and positive look to it,” Henry says.

Gone are the days of dark, dank and dusty basements you’re reluctant to go inside in fear of what you might find. (An old tool set you haven’t touched in six years? Kids’ toys you couldn’t bear to part with after they went off to college? The possibilities were endless.) Now basements are opening up to be a full extension of the home.

Co-owner and founder of SoBo Homes Mike D’Onofrio suggests using new large egress windows in the basement. Having a generous window well instead of the old minimal metal coverings will flood your underground space with light.

To further expand upon your bright, welcoming space, Boulder realtor Deanna Franco of 8030 Realty recommends utilizing an open concept space for the kitchen, dining room and living area. This will make your home feel warm and inclusive while following home remodeling trends. “No one wants to be excluded,” Franco says. She explains this is a priority in most new remodels, as homeowners are seeking to achieve the inclusive effect through an opened floor plan.

It’s absolutely essential to take into account both the physical and ethereal space in your home. Invite in some positivity by planning for light intentionality.

Keep It Simple, Sunshine

You don’t want all of that gorgeous light shining in on an overcrowded mess. A growing trend for Boulder homes right now is a clean, understated look that highlights the most important parts of your kitchen, bath, and basement.

We’re not scientists, but we paid enough attention in school to know that the color white is technically the sum of all colors. Mind blowing, right? This is great news for your home remodel, because you can use white in ways you never thought possible. Or every way you thought possible.

The experts agree that white reigns as the ideal color for your new kitchen, bathroom, and basement. According to real estate developer Rhonda Povich, a self-described “flipper” who buys and renovates home for Firm Foundations Realty, contrasting whites are totally in. Rather than go for the plain all white interior, utilize a variety of white shades such as panda white and chic white to create a subtle contrasting effect. This is especially helpful in the bathroom, where you can class up a smaller space easily.

In the kitchen, Povich recommends concealing outlets under the wall cabinets to give your backsplash a clean and unbroken look. The same goes for the basement: put your outlets, light switches, and other unsightly necessities out of sight with in-wall wiring and a faux cabinet front.

We’re loving the interplay of new design elements, including open floor plans (think inclusion), contrasting whites, and creative concealment and storage ideas.

Povich says that integrated refrigerators that are flush to the cabinets are also a must for a mind-blowing kitchen.

The Smart Bet Is On Smart Storage for Every Room to Make the Most of Your Space.

Ute Smart Storage Kitchen

Going off the smooth, simple trend, Franco suggests including ‘thoughtful storage’ in every room. This means maximizing the potential of your space to store all of your things without jamming it up with unsightly bins or inconvenient storage contraptions. Conceal your pots, pans, and other cookware in an extending kitchen drawer insert and utilize wide, deep set drawers and cabinets to contain everything from non-perishables to your favorite china set.

PSST.. INSIDER TIP: Stay ahead of the trend – White tipped us off that under counter microwave drawers are becoming a must, too!

Decor has changed a lot from your parents’ day, but trends have shifted from your early days of being a homeowner, too. No, you’re not old – the industry just has a lot of exciting trends to keep homes ever-evolving.

“You don’t see that very ornate style anymore,” says Ute Vandenberghe, a kitchen and bath design specialist. “People are looking for clean lines and plain shapes.”

Painted cabinets with lots of clean lines are a big kitchen trend for those seeking simplicity and elegance. Shaker-style cabinetry and slab doors are very plain wooden panels with little to no adornment inspired by the minimalist designs of the early American Shaker religion. These are becoming increasingly popular because they come in a variety of rather modest designs that can be customized to fit each kitchen, so you can modernize and customize them to fit your personal style.

Ute Smart Storage Kitchen

Ute Smart Storage Kitchen

Technology: Can’t Live With It, Can’t Live Without It

iPhone, iPad. i-whatever… There are a million technological devices on the market now that have seeped into many aspects of our everyday lives – and we all know they barely hold a charge until you get home from work.

All the experts agree: Make sure your home is fully equipped to handle all of your i-whatever devices by installing electrical outlets with full USB capability.

While they’re conveniently resting on your quartz countertop, your phone could be used to monitor your appliances, too! Who needs a robot butler anymore when we have this power at our fingertips? Using a ‘smart’ refrigerator that’s flush to your cabinets brings ubiquitous tech ability right to your kitchen while enhancing comfort and personality.

“Boulder’s green building codes are pointing to where many other municipalities will be heading in the very near future.” – Scott Rodwin

A Touch of Luxury

Not only does it feel good to glam up one aspect of your space, it gives your friends something to rave over, too! Class up your cabinets with a certain luxurious handle or stain that shows you considered even the finest details of your new kitchen – without being too obvious.

Vandenberghe recommends accentuating Shaker-style cabinetry with hardware that fits your home, whether it be modern handles for a modern style home or traditional hardware for a more classic interior. Brass fixtures are being noticed more, as well as an increase in high-gloss wooden doors for a subtle touch of opulence.

PSST… INSIDER TIP: Kitchen and bath designer Jen Simon of The KB Studio filled us in on the best-kept secret of new home remodels: matte cabinets are trending. Boulder is even seeing some black and dark navy cabinetry throughout the kitchen and basement. Simon says this style is extremely cutting edge, so get ahead of this trend if you’re looking for something out of the ordinary to luxe up your space.

No matter what style you choose, Vandenberghe emphasizes the importance of maintaining a consistent style throughout the entire home and choosing styles that best complement you and your family.

Connect With Nature

More and more people are doing away with a kitchen wall entirely and instead creating an immediate literal connection with the outdoors right from their homes.

According to D’Onofrio, creating this relationship from the indoor to outdoors is of particular importance in the kitchen. While older homes didn’t necessarily consider the potentially gorgeous views or how the outdoors could be integrated with the layout of new homes, newer and recently renovated homes are happy to incorporate the natural side of property right into the building itself.

Povich recommends opening up the back part of your kitchen to the outside by use of a garage door over the window that allows both indoor and outdoor seating. You can also open up by using a bi-fold door to create the desired openness and accessibility at your leisure.

Hardware matters. Maintain consistency throughout.

Be True To Yourself

No matter what your home style, keep in mind that you are the one who is going home to it every day. Remember to stay true to your preferences and maintain a consistent style throughout the home. Don’t fall into ‘Pinterest syndrome,’ as Simon calls it. “You don’t have to follow every trend,” she says. “Keep it simple and pick one unique accent for kitchen or bathroom.”

“My main goal is that when [my clients] come home, they’re wowed every time they come into their own space after a long day at work,” Vanderberghe says. “I feel successful when I do that.”

So what room reigns supreme when it comes to your home remodel?

The kitchen, by a landslide.

Experts and homeowners alike agree that the kitchen is the number one room to remodel. The place that everyone gathers for good food and good company deserves the utmost care and attention. And with so many amazing trends and local resources, your dream kitchen is near. Be aware of your home style and maintain consistency and flow throughout. No matter what, make sure it fits you.

There’s nothing like being a kid at summer camp. For the youth of Boulder County, there are a million and one summer camps to check out (yes, a million and one, that’s an official statistic. Really. Check out our listing). But sometimes, we hope for a little something extra for our children besides playing capture the flag and marching to the mess hall.

To that end, we’ve searched far and wide for summer camps with global purpose. These organizations ultimately make kids more understanding, respectful, and dedicated to working as a team to help their communities. Sometimes this means traveling abroad to help those who are less fortunate. Other times it means building certain crucial skills in a team environment to refocus your thoughts towards helping others and developing a greater sense of respect and compassion. We’re lucky to live in a place that offers something from every end of the spectrum.

Here are the best camps with a global purpose in Boulder County – because kids are the future, after all, and they deserve to have fun while learning how to build a better, more connected, and compassionate world.

GLOBAL WORKS

When it comes to summer programs with a true global purpose, Global Works is the paragon. The volunteer-driven organization, based in Lafayette, has spent the past 29 years providing students with authentic travel experiences with their Summer Service Adventures. On these trips, students take part in service projects while living with host families, making for a truly immersive experience. Destinations include anywhere from Nicaragua to the Fiji islands, and Costa Rica is known to be the summer’s most popular Summer Service Adventure destination, as trips there offer an environmental focus.

It’s not all about island sunbathing, though. These are hands-on experiences that give kids a new perspective on what it means to be part of a global community. One of this summer’s three programs in Costa Rica centers around helping sea turtles, while trips to other destinations may involve pre-med or public health components. The Global Works recipe for success involves sustainable community service, cultural immersion, leadership and adventure travel, sometimes with a dash of language immersion, too.

According to co-owner and executive director, Fritz Moriarty, Global Works helps students increase their confidence and gain a greater sense of global citizenship by developing empathetic relationships globally. “We try to really dig a lot deeper into the travel experience than taking photos and being tourists,” Moriarty said. “For us that means, as much as possible, developing real world authentic relationships with local communities and by doing service projects and having community partnerships.”

A service project site can range from an elementary school play area to a storm-ravaged town meeting place. Some of this year’s other Summer Service Adventure locales include Hurricane Maria Relief in Puerto Rico and an Earthquake Relief trip in Nepal.

The organization regularly returns to locations where they have built relationships, and often adjusts the trips’ service projects at the advisement of local contacts dependent on local need, such as helping rebuild schools in disaster-stricken regions. Each trip is aligned with a specific service project mission that requies a certain number of service hours. For example, this summer’s 12-day International Development trip to Guatemala will count as 25 community service hours, and the 24-day New Zealand and Fiji Islands Eco Adventure will count as 40.

Through all this hard work and community service, participants learn something on a deeper level. What is that, you might ask? “Community is something that we talk a lot about here,” Moriarty said. “Working together and having this amazing formative experience builds very strong bonds. It’s then getting that sense of community onto the places we travel to. It’s getting to know other cultures that, when you come home, you get to see those folks as more equal to yourself,” Moriarty explained. “You develop a sense of empathy with more people and a more diverse population.”

Global Works wants students to learn about and respect other cultures, to have a better understanding of not only different societies around the world, but the similarities of all humans. The life-changing experiences are an added bonus. “Hopefully that leads to an environment of respect where we can support each other and have positive relations with other people in our community.”

BOULDER DINNER THEATER ACADEMY

Sometimes purpose is found a little closer to home – in a camp setting that’s a far cry from a log cabin. At Boulder Dinner Theater Academy (BDTA) summer camp, kids work together to take on challenges under the spotlight. “We want to provide quality theatre education for children,” said BDTA business manager, Carrie Hausfather. Every kid loves a good story, and Hausfather says that learning under the guidance of professionals makes for an incomparable experience.

The weeklong standalone sessions for elementary school kids explore the technique of playmaking with plenty of fun involved. What’s not to love about singing and dancing your heart out with all your new friends?

Kids of all ages can participate in this summer camp, as BDTA also offers a three week camp for middle school and high school students during which they put on the same performance as the BDT mainstage. This is both an educational and cost-effective experience, as they share costumes, props and sets.

Anyone who has ever attended or participated in a live performance knows that in order for it to work, it’s all hands on deck. Teamwork is essential, and your co-performers and tech team basically become your stage family. Having the support of one another is imperative and needs to be airtight in order for the show to succeed, so the ‘have each other’s backs’ mentality stays with participants long after the show.

At BDTA summer camp, students learn all of this and more. A special feature for older ‘campers’ is that part of the summer program includes participating in elective courses that delve deeper into aspects of the theatre experience. Eventually, many of these participants will get the chance to work with younger students in the weekly kids camps. Hausfather says that having older student actors as mentors is special to the kids in the weekly programs, where campers get the opportunity to interpret their favorite stories or themes onstage in all their glory.

Kids camp usually starts out by learning the meaning of ‘adaptation’ from longtime beloved director, Joan Brousseau-Rubald – or, as she’s better known, Miss Joanie – and then campers get to create their own adaptations. Weekly themes range from fairy tales to Dr. Seuss and culminate in a performance for family and friends at Salberg Park. “Their imagination is the limit,” said Hausfather.

COLORADO MOUNTAIN RANCH

For those who grew up in Boulder County, one of the best places to let our imaginations run wild in the summertime is Colorado Mountain Ranch, and that still stands true today. The thriving ranch gives kids from all backgrounds the full mountain ranch experience: horseback riding, hiking, archery, the works. Campers have so much fun they don’t realize the more meaningful lessons they’re learning along the way. “Kids are pretty cool because they’re living in the moment and loving what they’re experiencing,” said Colorado Mountain Ranch consultant and staff member Jojo Morrison. “It’s not until they’re adults they look at these experiences and realize they were their truest selves.”

The beloved family-owned ranch has been giving kids a place to be themselves and experience the joys of nature since 1947. It offers Adventure Camp as an all-around, full package camp experience with a range of activities, Focus Camp for more concentrated time in specific areas of interest, and Teen Leadership Training for teenagers learning to be counselors-in-training and work as mentors for younger campers. “When they come to our summer camps they do get to experience everything, and… we also look to change the programs to keep up with what kids are interested in,” Morrison said.

What’s unique about summer camp at Colorado Mountain Ranch is its simplicity: its ability to slow life down for a minute and let kids soak up the simple happiness of nature and life. The pillars of the ranch’s summer camps are to have fun, make friends, get outside in nature, try something new, and be supported whether you succeed or fail – and, no matter what, always get up and try again with the help of your leaders and peers. “It’s about having a place where you can just explore and be yourself and no one’s judging you or grading you, no one’s better than the next person,” Morrison said. “Let’s dial it down and just create that happy childhood that everyone’s looking for…”

Besides all the fun campers have in an outdoor environment, they’re learning new ways to appreciate the world and people around them. Something crucial at Colorado Mountain Ranch is creating friendships and embracing people’s differences to realize we’re all cut from the same cloth on a soul level. Kids of varying backgrounds from all over Boulder County and beyond attend the camp, learn about team-building and support one another in an accepting environment where it’s fine to fail because you are learning lessons along the way.

Morrison believes that it’s the support of extensively trained staff members that helps children develop confidence while also learning compassion. “Learning to make mistakes in a safe environment helps build insight into any child, but it also builds confidence, and that’s something you carry with you wherever you go.”

Women’s Wilderness

Confidence is a theme that resonates throughout another revered local summer camp, Women’s Wilderness, where young people who identify as female learn to develop courage, confidence and wilderness skills. Executive director, Emily Isaacs, says that their teachings have expanded since their 1998 start to encompass marginalized communities that aren’t traditionally represented in the outdoor world. “We are interested in helping people learn technical outdoor skills – but really the heart of what we’re doing is helping people, girls in particular, discover who they are,” Isaacs said. “Here you learn to develop new skills and abilities no matter what you were born with.”

It goes without saying that not everyone is born with the ability to navigate a tricky stream crossing or effortlessly climb a steep rock formation but at Women’s Wilderness, girls will learn the skills and emotional strength necessary to do so. Even better, they learn in a supportive environment with trained professionals, so supporting their peers follows naturally. “All the mentors they see are women working in a positive way, and that’s huge,” Isaacs said. “We’re breaking down the things that separate girls from working as a team to be each other’s allies and they’re doing that in a wilderness setting away from dominant society.”

Girl power is one driving force of Women’s Wilderness, and diversity and inclusivity are equally as important. The organization ensures that young women of all different backgrounds can attend their summer camps and, perhaps more importantly, feel completely welcome and at home when they get there. Staff members go to great lengths to make sure the camp is inclusive and accessible for all, from helping with transportation, mailing out paperwork in languages besides English, and having proper outdoor gear available for any girl that needs them.

The Women’s Wilderness attendance model includes a third of attendees who pay in full, a third who use partial pay, and a third who attend on full scholarship. They go to different schools in the area to recruit girls and work with family liaisons in Title I schools. They also make a point to connect with teachers and coaches in order to have a diverse range of referrals and to make sure that anyone who wants to attend has the ability to do so. According to their website, Women’s Wilderness has never turned away a potential camper due to financial aid issues in 18 years and have managed to provide $335,000 in financial assistance in that time – whew! Talk about dedication to accessibility.

Beyond the finer points of accessibility, Women’s Wilderness wants to ensure common respect and acceptance, down to questioning themselves for potentially appropriating a symbol such as a mandala. Isaacs explained that working both individually and as a team towards a greater goal in a diverse and inclusive environment is key to guiding the young campers to success in an outside world that can be cold and harsh at times, particularly in those middle school years. “It’s a tumultuous time where your bodies are changing or not changing, you’re navigating cliques, social media, peer pressure, identity, what’s cool, and the beginning of romantic relationships,” she says. “[At summer camp] it’s one of those rites of passage to take on challenges.” Camp leaders incorporate bite-sized challenges that are appropriate for the group and encourage the girls to help each other and experience success together. These are of vital importance for real-life application – as a member of today’s society.

According to Isaacs, young women at this camp are put in the position to truly evaluate the questions, “Who am I and what do I have to give back to my community?” Noting a lack of this questioning in our culture, Isaacs believes that going through this mental process is a key part of healthy rites of passage, and Women’s Wilderness strives to provide a safe and encouraging context for it. “Life is shaky, life is challenging, and people are going to push you. Girls learn to source from within and to connect with that strength, self-determination and sense of self,” Isaacs says. “Once you taste that, which I think girls really do here, you don’t forget it … you’re unshakeable.”

CLOSING THOUGHTS

From learning the ins and out of stage teamwork to building sustainable communities abroad and developing wilderness skills and acceptance, the summer camps in BOCO provide a wide variety of opportunities for kids to learn lessons that will help them go forward into the world as more compassionate global citizens. These will help them become citizens who are much more aware of the needs of others and who will then seek to help not only their communities, but the world beyond the city limits.

In today’s volatile world, it’s important to remember what makes us human, and to offer help to our fellow humans in times of need. Childhood is the best time to incorporate these lessons and life skills to have our children develop into compassionate creatures with a greater understanding of wider, global society. Getting to learn such lessons at a young age while frolicking through the mountains, riding a horse, or completing a fulfilling service project overseas is an opportunity for kids that’s not to be missed.

Summer camp will always be a place to explore, try new things, and have the best time ever, no matter what the setting. In BOCO, we have all of the resources necessary to help kids learn, grow and succeed to become respectful global citizens – campfire marshmallows optional.

Whether you’re a Yogi couple or have never planked before, Acroyoga is a great way to connect with one another physically and emotionally. A combination of acrobatics, yoga and Thai massage, a private Acroyoga class with Yoga Yuki in Boulder will have the two of you speaking in a new exercise language as poses such as Front Bird, Prepare for Takeoff, High-Flying Whale and Camel contort your bodies.

Before class, you’ll want to avoid eating anything heavy given the fact that you’ll both be flipping about, hanging upside down, and using your core muscles for balance — a bloated tummy isn’t going to go over well. You do need to eat something, though, because Acroyoga requires strength and stamina. Thrive has you covered with its Natural High superfood smoothie featuring Shilajit, a great energy booster. If you’d rather have a more sensual and relaxed vibe, the smoothie mecca recommends Lavender Lacuma, which is packed full of protein, iron and calcium.

Acroyoga is also a great way for a couple to experience different/unique things that they would not normally do at home, in a fun and playful environment. You won’t be ready to join the circus after just one class, but you will be more intuitive to each other’s bodies and boundaries.

After class, grab lunch at family-run Le French Cafe. It’s a welcoming spot that’s perfect for meal sharing because deciding whether to indulge in one of its 20 different crepes or to order a perfectly made-from-scratch baguette sandwich is a choice you shouldn’t have to make.
When the safari ends, you’ll be seated at a communal table for a five-course meal prepared by a celebrated local chef that is sourced completely from local farms with meat directly from Corner Post Meats’ ranch.
Moved to CO/Boulder: March 2017

Hobbies: I love dogs and animals, the outdoors, art, movies, adventures.

Traits I look for in a significant other: Chemistry above all else.

Number of dates per month: 3-4. I’ve been on about 25 first dates since being back in Colorado.

Online/app dating experience: I’ve used Tinder, CMB, Skout, MeetMe, Plenty of Fish and some I can’t remember, but I’ve given up.

Best place to meet people in BoCo: If I knew that I wouldn’t be single! In places like restaurants and bars, people here are very closed off to new folks.

Favorite date spot in BoCo: I’ve tried many different places and everything is a bust. If I really want to go out and I don’t want to meet new people, I do enjoy the Dark Horse. It can be fun to walk down the Pearl Street Mall.

Favorite date spot in my hometown (or previous location): When I lived in Portland, there were a lot of local dive bars and unique events to do.

Impact my career has on dating: It’s definitely made it easier, although it’s only led to two dates that didn’t go anywhere. I do go to a lot of networking events which makes it easier for to meet people in general, although it’s business talk, not dating.

Dating in Boulder vs my hometown (or previous location): I tried a lot of online dating in Portland with about as much success as I have here. Although the people were more laid back and it was easier to make friends or find potential dates without using an app.

Pros/Cons of being ‘single in the suburbs’: It’s hard to meet people my own age. Everyone is either a super young CU student, or older with a family.

Traits that are special or significant in people I’ve met here: Mainly, it just feels like people are closed off. For example, I went to a distillery for a “speed friending” event and I felt so judged by the people in there, I left after 5 minutes. The only unique thing that stands out dating-wise is the guy that took me to Vegas as a gift and then went psycho on me while we were there. He sure was ‘special.’ Generally, the dates have been flat and boring, though. No chemistry.

Moved to CO/Boulder: June 2013, traveled and moved back in April 2016

Hobbies: Personal growth, social change, hiking, snowboarding, travel adventures.

Traits I look for in a significant other: Respect, kindness, intelligence, integrity, open heartedness, badassery, and passion for life.

Number of dates per month: 2-6

Online/app dating experience: I’ve tried all of the dating apps and I don’t think any of them is doing a good enough job. That’s what inspired Nectar.

Best place to meet people in BoCo: Conscious events and activities like yoga and movement are some of the best. I do feel there should be more ways to meaningfully connect with amazing people in real life, which is why I’m developing a new connections app.

Favorite date spot in BoCo: I live right on Sanitas Trail, so chatting over a beautiful hike and tea is my favorite. It’s so much more personal to me than meeting in a noisy restaurant or bar.

Impact my career has on dating: It’s specifically designed to help people connect, and I think it’s going to change everything, dating and otherwise.

dating in Boulder vs hometown (or previous location): I find DC and the East Coast to be higher stress and more disembodied. I love Boulder for its conscious culture, with so many people that are interested in personal growth and sacred connection.

pros/cons of being ‘single in the suburbs’: Now that I’m in my 40s, and everyone is fairly busy, it’s definitely more challenging to meet like-minded single people without kids that still feel passionate about life. On t other hand, I have more wisdom and ability to deeply appreciate life on my own, so there’s a sweet balance. Oh, and just about every single woman in Boulder has a dog.

I love dogs, but the last woman I dated had a dog who slept next to her in bed and rode in the passenger seat. I was literally taking his place, and he didn’t appreciate it, so we both felt bad. He put two paws on the bed and started barking every time we had sex, which was weird, and not really in a good way. So whenever I see a dog in someone’s Tinder photo, I’m thinking, uh-oh, the co-pilot spot is already taken. Swipe!

Traits that are special or significant in people I’ve met here: There are definitely more conscious people here, and more open mindedness. It feels more authentic and satisfying to date conscious people.

Traits I look for in a significant other: Kind, joyful, adventurist, deeply spiritual, lives a conscious lifestyle, understands the impact his action have on the planet, others and himself. Spontaneous yet grounded, loves life, appreciates the finer things and the outdoors.

Number of dates per month: None yet!

Best place to meet people in BoCo: The Kitchen Next Door, Upstairs, Cork, T/aco. I’m still exploring where to meet others. The comedy club on Sunday night.

Favorite date spot in BoCo: I haven’t been here that long and I’ve been worried about trying to stick to a job, which I have, so [dating] hasn’t really been a priority … I’ve just been trying to get established. But any kind of art event or exhibit. Having lived in LA, New York, and Chicago, I really miss the culture.

Favorite date spot in my hometown (or previous location): Cité atop Lake Point Towers in downtown Chicago. Great food, ambience, music and view.

Impact my career has on dating: I sometimes work till 9 p.m. so that affects opportunities I have to miss when I’m working late. Plus, I usually work weekends.

dating in Boulder vs my hometown (or previous location): I lived downtown so I would go to the art institute, or a gallery opening, jazz bars, champagne bars, or any venue and just click with those who were funny and authentic. It seemed easier to meet people when I was younger. Since i’m new to the area, it’s harder.

pros/cons of being ‘single in the suburbs’: When I lived in downtown Chicago you could go to an art exhibit or a restaurant opening and meet people in just everyday like because it’s such a big city. Here, I haven’t really casually just met somebody. I haven’t been in that headspace. I also had a really bad car accident in 2016 and I had to have a knee replace surgery, and i had to go thru extensive physical theory so my whole goal has just been to get established here and get back in shape. Dating hasn’t been my first intention.

Traits that are special or significant in people I’ve met here: Although I haven’t been on a date here yet, sadly, I find people to just be so open. There is a sense of adventure that most people have that is so refreshing. It’s seems that most people I’ve met are really happy, too, which is great!

Hometown: Houston, TX. From London.

Hobbies: Workout classes, soccer, cycling, table tennis, disco dancing

Traits you look for in a significant other: I gravitate towards deeper connections. Those experiences, personal beliefs, values, and ideals provide foundation.

Number of dates per month: 1-2. I’ve been on a few since I moved. I settled in before I even considered dating.

Online/dating app experience: Yeah, I was talked into it, and that’s the story I’m sticking with. I’ve used both, and it is absolutely possible to find a special person you connect with through an apps.

Best place to meet people in BoCo: There’s always a ton of things going on, so I think the more events, the more likely you are to meet people.

Favorite date spot in BoCo: Revealing state secrets is a punishable offense, is it not? I prefer a more relaxed feel to the first meet-up.

Impact my career has on dating: I feel fortunate my career affords me a really healthy work-life balance. I’m extremely dedicated to my patients, however, so I don’t tend to take too much personal time off.

pros/cons of being ‘single in the suburbs’: Boulder is definitely a smaller community. Trying to find someone who fits just right is going be much more difficult. I think most people want the same things, and in many ways, are more compatible with others than they really think they are.

Best date I’ve had in BoCo: My favorite date started randomly at Moosejaw with an absolutely stunning woman who wanted to try on winter jackets. After that we made our way over to Pizzeria Locale and had some wonderful conversation. It was had all the hallmarks of good things to come.

Impact my career has on dating: I can get caught up in work and education and it takes energy that I would spend on dating.

pros/cons of being ‘single in the suburbs’: The biggest struggle is the amount of locations to meet people In terms of benefits, I think it allows room for creativity.

Best date I’ve had in BoCo: I met my date at the Farmer’s Market and walked around, laid in the sun at the park and people watched. Then we went to Sanitas Trailhead, where we went on a hike together.

Online/app dating experience: I definitely have used all of them at least once, for sure. Because I’m gay it’s easier and more helpful to use an app if there isn’t a gay bar or something in the area.

Best place to meet people in BoCo: I did go to school here so there were more parties and social events. Other than that, I’ve been meeting people who I used to know in coffee shops and yoga classes.

Dating in Boulder V my hometown (or previous location): There’s more of a n invitation to relationships here as opposed to New York where everything is so temporary.

Pros/Cons of being ‘single in the suburbs’:

Traits that are special or significant in people I’ve met here: People are so friendly and nice which is SO refreshing. That’s something I really love, that people tend to be social and hospitable and have a healthy mind and attitude.

Before the first real snowflakes even hit the ground, everyone – not only Colorado – is talking about the Winter Olympics. This year’s 2018 Winter Olympics will take place in PyeongChang, South Korea on February 9-25. But before that, Colorado, home to some of the most challenging mountains in the nation, has the honor of being the training grounds for amateurs and future Olympians alike, hosting Olympic trials and qualifying events at some of its most prestigious ski resorts this season.

“Our world-class ski resorts receive consistently great snow, making Colorado the perfect location for Olympic athletes to train and compete or for Olympic-obsessed guests to visit during the winter,” Melanie Mills, Colorado Ski Country USA President and CEO, said in a press release.

Since 1924, the Winter Olympics have showcased some of the most talented action sports athletes in the world. Among the most popular competitions include speed skating figure skating, and of course Colorado favorites skiing and snowboarding.

“It’s the high elevation in Colorado that makes all of our ski resorts unique,” Chris Linsmayer, Public Affairs Director of Colorado Ski Country USA says of the state’s role in the Olympic trials. “The state of Colorado is the number one location for skiing and snowboarding in the country.”

But you probably already knew that from sitting in mountain traffic for hours on end at least once every winter. Your trip could be a bit smoother with the new Lyft Ski Rack program, a new feature where the rider can choose a vehicle fully equipped with ski racks for outdoor gear. The driver is also responsible for loading your gear.

In addition to hosting Olympic qualifiers, Colorado ski resorts all over the state will be conducting Olympic-themed events, including sendoffs for this year’s Olympians and lessons from former Olympic athletes. Linsmayer says that the Colorado Ski Country USA resorts love to “keep the Olympic momentum going” for guests and athletes alike. “It’s a great opportunity for the people who live in Colorado to see these Olympic athletes in person, because it’s such a unique experience to watch them live and then later on TV competing for the gold medal.”

Among the resorts participating in Olympic events are Aspen Snowmass, Crested Butte, Breckenridge, Steamboat, and Wolf Creek. Copper Mountain, Snowmass, and Breckenridge will serve as important stops on the road to the 2018 Winter Olympics, hosting Olympics qualifiers throughout December and January.

With only four U.S. Olympic team spots open per category, the athletes are sure to bring their best to the slopes every step – or alley-oop – of the way.

Leading up to the celebrated international competition, Olympic hopefuls began at Copper Mountain in Summit County Dec. 6-10 at the U.S. Toyota Grand Prix, an Olympic selection event that includes halfpipe skiing, halfpipe snowboarding, and big air snowboarding qualifying events.

Copper Mountain will keep the Olympic spirit strong throughout the season. It will serve as the official winter training site for Colorado-based winter Special Olympics athletes before hosting the State Winter Games for the Special Olympics of Colorado on March 5. Among the competitions are alpine skiing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding.

Breckenridge’s annual Dew Tour has teamed up with U.S. Ski & Snowboard for the competitors’ stop along the Grand Prix line with ski and snowboard qualifying events Dec. 13-17.

In January, qualifying events for halfpipe skiing, slopestyle snowboarding, slopestyle skiing, and halfpipe snowboarding will take place at Aspen Snowmass. Aspen will also host the ESPN Winter X Games at the end of the month.

Calum Clark, head of events for U.S. Ski & Snowboard, said in a statement that these world-renowned spots are “best-suited to showcase the world’s skiers and riders and our USA Olympic hopefuls.” Needless to say, with all of the excitement and activity surrounding the Winter Olympics, things are sure to be a little different at Colorado’s ski resorts.

According to Linsmayer, it’s all about the spirit of the renowned events. “A lot more eyes are turned to skiing and snowboarding during the Olympics, so across the country there is increased interest,” Linsmayer says. “Many of our resorts are hosting events all in honor of the Olympics, and it’s exciting to celebrate. It’s great for the state and great for the resorts.”

“Colorado is excited to host these prestigious Olympic qualifying events and support the many athletes who live and train here who will be competing in South Korea,” Mills says. Check out

Breckenridge native, Jaxin Hoerter, a 16-year-old freeskier competing at the Toyota U.S. Grand Prix at Copper in hopes of making his mark at this year’s Winter Olympics. Freeskier Alex Ferreira, 23, will compete in his hometown of Aspen for the freeski halfpipe slot at Snowmass.

Should everyday skiers and resort-goers be worried about the excitement of the Winter Olympics surrounding their favorite ski resorts? Not at all. Your favorite ski spots will be in local mode all season long. Linsmayer says the resorts host these types of competitions and events yearly, so they are “well-equipped” to handle an Olympic winter.

If you’re the type of person who loves to feel the spray of snow from the sidelines, there are plenty of opportunities to see your favorite athletes compete right here in Colorado before they go for the gold. You might even run into an Olympian on the next trip to your favorite slope.

For those interested in getting Olympic level instruction, Olympian Wendy Fisher, a two-time World Extreme Ski Champion and Crested Butte local, hosts ski clinics at Crested Butte for all skill levels throughout the 2017-2018 winter season.

As it is always a fun and exhilarating winter in Colorado, but being a part of the 2018 Winter Olympics should make this season one for the ages.
