Back to School

School is starting back up, and whether you are in school, have children, or are a former student, it is hard not to feel nostalgic for the first day of school. Just as Tom Hanks offered Meg Ryan in 1998, “I would send you a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils, if I had your name and address.” Since I don’t, I’ll offer some suggestions to celebrate the back-to-school season.

Sip, shop, and read

A fresh read for the fall season is sure to bring out your inner academic.  The Read Queen in Lafayette has a mix of new and used books. There is an air of comfort in this snug shop, which is a mix of personal library and hip café, transporting you back to your student days.

Have an ice cream social

If they are good enough for kindergartners, they are good enough for me. Get your friends and family together for an ice cream social. Invite that new pal you just haven’t had time to connect with yet and make it a low-stakes community-building day. Sweet Cow Creamery in Louisville has the perfect outside space for the kids to chase each other around while you visit with old and new friends.

Take a class

You don’t need to be enrolled in school to keep learning and growing. To spark your creativity and meet new people, try an improv class. Although this may sound a bit intimidating  to even the most extroverted butterfly, improv is a great way to challenge the mind, engage imagination, and improve public speaking skills. The Improv Collaborative has new classes starting this September.

Go back to school shopping

This does not need to be a practice in consumerism, but finding a new piece of clothing, shoes, a pack of pens. Find something that makes you feel good and donate something that no longer bring you joy. It is a new school year, just as you did at 14, it is time to reinvent yourself.

Small Planet eBikes in Downtown Longmont has new ownership. New owner Amy Wilkins of Longmont purchased the business from the store’s founder, Tom Wilson. Tom started the shop in 2009 and has been actively managing the store up until his recent retirement.

The Longmont Chamber of Commerce will be conducting a ceremonial ribbon for Small Planet eBike’s new owners on Thursday, May 11, from 5pm to 6pm. There will also be a “launch party” on Saturday, May 13 from 10am to 4pm. The launch party will be at the Small Planet eBike store and include food and drink, prize giveaways, and free bike test rides. Small Planet staff will be on hand to answer any questions about eBikes. Both events are open to the public.

“Amy and I met when she was vetting a different eBike store,” said Wilson. “The timing was perfect as I was looking to retire. We worked it out and I’m confident the store is in good hands, he said.”

Small Planet eBikes sells a wide variety of eBikes including various types and brands. Electric bike brands they carry include Aventon, Magnum, Bluejay, Stromer, Batch, Bulls, an others. A variety of eBike styles are available that are designed for recreation, commuting, trail riding, or carrying cargo. The store also has a full service bike repair and service center located on site.

New Owner Wilkins said she plans to continue the precedent that Tomhas created for Small Planet. “Tom has had success for a reason.” said Wilkins. “Unlike big box stores, Small Planet focuses on a customer first approach and inventory that includes a wide variety of brands and models suited for any type of rider.

eBike popularity has exploded in recent years. They are ridden year round and are extremely versatile. They can be used on many types of terrains, including streets, bike paths, trails, and sidewalks. In addition to their versatility, they produce zero emissions and are a healthy form of year-round transportation. Another benefit is avoiding gridlock during commutes.

There are three classes of eBikes – Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. The classes refer to the differences between the types of bikes and their features, including their and motor abilities (pedal-assist and/or stand alone throttle). Class 1 and 2 eBikes can reach a speed of 20 mph and Class 3 bikes have a top speed of 28 mph.

B – Cork: “Local fresh ingredients shouldn’t be special; it should be assumed.” These are the founding tenets of Chef Jim Smailer of Boulder Cork. And his ethos is found in every item on this classy bistro’s menu, namely, its signature cut steaks. B – Fresh Thymes: It is great sadness that we are writing this Reader’s Favorite pick for Best Healthy Meal in Boulder, as Fresh Thymes closed their doors in December. After securing the empty coffeeshop next door for expansion, two years later, Fresh Thymes had still not been able to move in to the new location due to permits being delayed by the City itself. EC – Louisville Cyclery: Louisville Cyclery has been an integral part of the community for over four decades. EC – Bob Burger: Bob Burger Recreation Center contains all the equipment and room of other centers but has an obtainable price point. The center maintains outdoor jacuzzis for an outdoor soak, and is minutes away from Lafayette’s finest museums, parks, and restaurants. It is a great stop for an outing with your entire family or simply to workout.

B – North Boulder Rec: North Boulder Rec Center remains easily accessible from public transportation offering all the amenities of other recreation centers. The University Memorial Center on CU Boulder’s campus is a ten minute ride to the Center’s front doors on the SKIP going Northbound. EC – Nissi’s: Did you catch the October 2022 cover of YS? That was the new Nissi’s we featured. After years of serving East County with live music, the pandemic shut Nissi’s down in their original location. EC – Coal Creek Theater Co.: Watching murder mysteries at home on Netflix is fine but Coal Creek Theater has an entire year’s worth of suspenseful plays to see during their upcoming 2023 “Killer Season”. Themed years, playwright competitions, and showcases help explain why they are the top theater this year, and have been an East County artistic fixture since 1990. Runner-up: Back Story Theater

B – Local Theater Company: Despite the name drawing generic Google search results, Local Theater is anything but. Keeping the American writing tradition alive, they are the only Colorado venue to exclusively show world premieres – every play is brand new. Offering a writing workshop to budding young artists, specializing in new American plays, and now in their 12th season, come audition for or watch an original show. EC – Nissi’s

B – eTown: Recognized as a “cultural contributor” when inducted into the Colorado Music Hall of Fame, eTown is founded on the simple yet oft-forgotten ideals of universal connectivity through music. The twist is that every show is accompanied by an in-depth conversation about things that matter – like politics or the environment. The solar powered hall broadcasts nationally and has hosted over 1,000 artists on their programs over the decades they have been around.

Arcade

EC – Quarters: It’s Saturday night, you’re holding a glass of your favorite brew in one hand and a skee ball on the other. After its grand opening, Quarters is a new destination that adds to the night life in East County, Colorado. The growth of arcade bars brings excitement to members online to revisit an activity left in childhood. Runner-up: Tilt!

B – Press Play: Part college bar, part arcade, this is the place to come if you want to drink and play video games without any kids running around underfoot. Closed on Mondays but with events every other night of the week, come let off some steam by smashing your friend in packman then taking a shot.

EC – Longmont Museum: Over the last 30 years Boulder County has seen tremendous changes to it’s population and towns. (Which is one of the reasons we are featuring them for our cover this year.) One of our first sources to cover the History of BOCO was the expertise at Longmont Museum. EC – Good Samaritan: I’ve had many family members treated at Good Sam, and it’s a beautiful hospital. Every staff member is focused on providing the highest quality of care for all of their patients and their families. The nursing staff is Magnet Certified for excellence (less than 10% of hospitals have this distinction!).

EC – Greg Keene – Keene Smiles: Like Vets, Dentists are also getting bought up by big corporations. Thank goodness we still have Dr Keene. His down-toearth personality, exceptional staff and local vibe make his office one of the best, but his expertise is what makes it even better.

B – Rachel Barone – Gunbarrel Dental Center: Dr. Barone knows most people have anxiety about the dentist. She works hard with her team to foster an environment of compassion for her patients. Many find that they no longer fear visiting the dentist after becoming her patient!

Doctor

EC – Dr. Brad Brown and Dr. Sara Schuster – Strive: Dr. Brown and Dr. Schuster were fed up with insurance companies dictating how much time they had with patients. The solution? It’s usually much cheaper, and your doctor is always only a text away!

EC – Carbon Valley Eye Care: When Dr. Berger told us he was merging his practice with a partner and they were building the largest Center in the North Metro offering eyecare specialties like no other, we thought he might be crazy. But it turns out he knew exactly what he was doing as did Dr. Koditek. Carbon Valley Eye has a great selection of frames, but it is their expertise and specialities that make them stand out. We can see why readers keep voting them the best.

B – Envision: Patients love this practice for its wide range of services and large selection of glasses. Doctor-owned with friendly, attentive service. Post-op care for procedures like cataract surgery and more common care for contact fittings and eyeglass options. A destination for shoppers looking for a sustainable way to reuse and recycle. Rags includes top names like Chanel and Fendi. EC – Downtown Lafayette: The shift from a rather sleepy downtown to a truly charming district with a small-town feel over the past decade has been nothing short of remarkable. Shoppers and diners will definitely run into acquaintances here, but it’s not a “see or be seen” type of district. Very down-to-Earth.

B – Pearl Street Mall in Boulder: It’s hard to believe closing the mall to car traffic was ever controversial. Worth it. EC – Read Queen: Owners Barbra Huntting and Deirdre Appelhans run and operate this woman-owned business, which sells new and used books. Come for the books (a surprisingly large selection given the unassuming modest looking storefront) and stay for the tea.

B – Boulder Bookstore: Follow them on Insta, where you will find events, the staff in ugly holiday sweaters, and the massive gathering of children in front of the store at the annual Munchkin parade. Along with author signings and a wide selection of books, it’s clear why Boulder Bookstore takes the top spot.

Florist

EC – Lafayette Florist: Oh, the service. The old school way of running a plant and flower shop: Shoppers will leave with everything they were seeking, and a million things they didn’t know they needed or wanted. Local delivery is available but the store is a riot of color. Large and spacious, filled with flowers and plants and pots and everything one needs.

B – Sturtz & Copeland: So pretty that flower fans will want to get married every week just to see what their florists can create. Houseplants tend to be long-lasting (depending on how green one’s thumbs are) and very fresh.

Kid’s Store

EC – Pitter Patter in Lafayette: The very definition of “shopping small.” Goods for babies through tweens, mostly clothes. If one has a child, or wants to give a gift to a child they love, Pitter Patter offers unique and interesting choices.

B – Childish Things: Start saying to consignment items for children, most of whom grow out of their gorgeous goodies faster than parents can say “I need to start saving for college.” Also offers new items. Tons of toys featuring Melissa and Doug and used Cabbage Patch dolls that may have mom or dad headed there for themselves. From Yelp: “I absolutely LOVE this place. EC – Purple Poppy: Even if the store looks small on the outside of its strip mall location, anything a gift-giver wants will be here. Kitchen towels, jewelry, soaps, and pots of jam. Amusing socks, local honey and a large selection of tea.

B – Sweet Ruckus in Boulder: Reviews from shoppers are very high, but its own social is a little lackluster — but who cares? Much more fun to browse in person anyway. Home goods and body care items are just a short set of offerings from this tidy shop in Boulder. Great, creative cards and paper goods. Very affordable.

Natural Goods

Vitamin Cottage: Oh, what to say? This is not your grandma’s hippie grocer — though they have all those goods as well. Rebranded as Natural Grocers years ago, most people still refer to it as Vitamin Cottage. Bulk foods, organic produce, meat (yes, they went there), vitamins and supplements and anything else you can think of. Buy some wheat berries. Pick up a sandwich. Get some pet food and paper towels.

Musical Instruments

EC – Monkton Guitars: Many fond memories of jamming on guitars, trying out new styles, and discovering a hidden gem of an instrument have been formed here at Monkton Guitars. Dave Williams’ love of vintage instruments led him to create a brick-and-mortar Monkton Guitars in Broomfield after decades of successful online-only sales. Its location has helped preserve some of the classic charm of a neighborhood guitar shop, something every budding young rock star needs.

B – Woodsongs: The music industry has transformed radically over the last 50 years but Woodsongs Instruments, Boulder’s longest running music store, has endured. EC – Struttin Pup: Healthy food is the key to feeling well, even in animals. EC – Igadi: Rewards programs aren’t the most exciting thing in the world, unless we’re talking discounts on bud. Igadi’s attempt to demystify the cannabis growing and producing process has helped show both the science and art that goes into crafting quality cannabis products even if the selection is limited to what they produce in-house.

B – Terrapin Care Station: If you’re planning to let your inspiration flow before seeing the Dead & Co. on their final tour, you need to stock up here. Paradise Found is Bart’s, rebranded, with owner Will Paradise moving the location back to Pearl Street – where Bart’s was originally first located. While Stan’s has won Best of the West, just about every year since YS began, their long commitment to community coupled with their trustworthy services has made them a local’s favorite year after year. Be sure to drive by the shop for their famous inspirational message on their sign.

B – Hoshi: Hoshi rarely advertises. Why would they when so many people share the word on this local Boulder repair shop that’s been around for 32 years? Winning Best of the West awards certainly helps, too. Honesty pays off. It’s pretty rare to find an auto shop with positive reviews but they pull it off.

Attorney

EC – Catherine Brown: Catherine has been helping folks with immigration for over 20 years. She has helped countless people make Colorado their home, sometimes even pro bono for those in need. According to reviews, Catherine’s clients feel respected, valued, and supported, like their case matters and she truly wants them to be her Colorado neighbor.

B – Barre M. Sakol, P.C.: Let’s be real, few people want to consult an attorney. Usually that means something is going very wrong. Barre uses his 30 years of experience to help demystify the process and guide you through the legal world so fraught with complications. The legal process can be difficult but your lawyer shouldn’t be.

Bank

Elevations Credit Union: As a nonprofit credit union, Elevations is able to represent the values of the people they serve far more than a typical corporate bank can (or will). This shows in their incredible community contributions ranging from setting up scholarships to community events and education, like “Get Off Your Donkey”, a presentation about wellness for people with desk jobs, a benefit bicycle donation drive, and informational finance workshops in Spanish. EC – Sister Carmen: Sister Carmen has been there for everyone in need since 1978 and has distributed over a million pounds of food and household items, and over a million dollars in housing assistance with transparency, respect, and an open heart for all who come to them. The thrift shop is a great way to support this beloved community treasure and get yourself something fun.

B – Community Foundation: Boulder’s Community Foundation is not just for people, but all aspects of living. They hold dear concerns for the environment, as we have seen how the environment impacts people. Over the last year, they have been working steadily with other organizations to help those impacted by the Marshall Fire. They work to build stronger communities, through health, education, and leadership programs, in addition to charitable funding.

Politician

Joe Neguse: Congressman Joe Neguse takes the BOW vote from Polis this year! His dedication to veterans, equity, conservation, climate, education, and civil rights are deeply appreciated by the community. At only 31 years old, Joe Neguse was one of the youngest cabinet members ever to serve. Not only this, but his accomplishments and achievements are a long list of impressive feats, especially for a person of his age, beginning with graduating summa cum laude from the University of Colorado- Boulder.

Artist

EC – Wira Babiak: The art of Wira Babiak’s landscapes have a special essence. She does gorgeous paintings of the Colorado prairies that capture the raw spirit of East County. She is a multimedia artist with major talent across the board and has even brought the stunning fragile beauty of Ukrainian eggs to our area communities. As a Ukrainian immigrant, she is now using her art to benefit humanitarian efforts in Ukraine.

B – Adderly Art: Adderly Grant-Lord’s vibrant pinks, blues, and yellows lift the spirit and echo of love. Her soul shines through her work, encouraging you to see, find, and feel true beauty. Her pieces in the Black Futures in Art: We’re Not Just History collection is a spectacular depiction of hope and vitality. As a Carribean-born artist with a background in fashion and art, she knows how to make colors pop and create divine aesthetics.

Angie is glad that her mom can work with her and slow down from her busy days as a nurse.

Tools and warehouse space are available to members of The Gizmo Dojo makerspace in Northglenn.

CU Boulder Campus: The students of CU Boulder have no tolerance for the intolerant and at least a few times every year, some racist, homophobic POS sets up outside the UMC to spew Bible-fueled hate speech at kids trying to learn. Just saying, the UMC has many cold drink options and plenty of places to quickly dip into. Not that we’re implying anything.

US 36 and Table Mesa: Clean, safe, and sporting a close-up view of the Flatirons, it’s a great place to catch a ride to most places in North Metro or anywhere in Boulder. Also, the morning sun warms it in the summertime, which is honestly lovely if you’re rocking a hangover.

The Caribou Room – Nederland: A favorite for local jam and bluegrass bands, it’s almost criminal this place isn’t talked about more. It’s a cool place in a cool town with a cool balcony and a huge dance floor that’s just sticky enough to be cool.

Adri Norris (Afro Triangle)’s Piece On the Side of Lolita’s Market: In a part of the state so flush with art and color, it is a beautiful thing to see a stunning piece that says something. This one highlights the history of voting suppression faced by BIWOC, allowing those going in for their morning burritos to learn about something tragically not taught in schools. Go get some enlightenment and see it for yourself.

The box was ordinary like any other birthday gift. Rectangular, brightly wrapped and with a card attached, indistinguishable from all the other gifts piled before the young birthday girl. How was I to know the evil waiting inside?
But the moment my 10-year-old daughter stripped the paper off the box from that wretched tween clothing store Justice, I knew I was doomed to the deepest reaches of Back-to-School shopping Hell. Just the name itself sounds like that of a great demon snake: “Jusssss…tissss.” The bright pink, overly ripe lettering said to all the girl, “Yea! I am fun! I am young! Everyone luuurvs wearing me!” But to me, that big, puffy “i” dotted with a big heart said, “Yea! I’m from the Mall and I’m going to COST YOU A WHOLE LOT!”
When it comes to buying school supplies we are all doomed. The days of elementary schools being able to afford crayons and notebooks are long gone and every child is expected to bring essentials on the very first day of class. But never fear! Yellow Scene has ways to make back-to-school shopping a little less scary.
School Supplies
Step one, find your school’s supply list ASAP. Each school district has a list of required supplies for your child’s school and grade available by now. Some stores like Walmart and Target carry school lists for your convenience. Ask a more organized parent if you have to. This list is your best friend. Know it well and you will save both time and sanity points. Cheaper and Easier
Stick with the list. It’s tempting, I know. There you are, picking up that pack of #2 American made wooden pencils when you see that new purse. Don’t buy it. Stick to the list. Save money. Cheaper
Shop around. Most Moms I know wander around from Target to Staples to Costco with their supply lists stuffed in their purses all summer long, grabbing what’s on sale and marking it off the list. Or, like me, they wait until the last minute and find themselves shoving through crowds in the evenings fighting for that last Hello Kitty notebook. Here’s some good advice for dealing with the big retailers. Jennifer Hart of Louisville says Tuesday and Wednesday mornings tend to be the quietest days at Target.  She shops the ads and then heads in for what she wants. If you are taking the kids, make sure they are well rested and fed. Cheaper and Easier
Don’t take the kids. Seriously. So much easier without them. Easier
Price match ads. A lot of stores will match sale prices from rival stores’ coupons and ads. Cheaper
Pick a store and stick with it.  Go to the store of your choice, be it discounter, office supply, warehouse, online, or craft store, and just buy everything on the list. One and done. Easier
But when I saw that my now 7th grader—she of the Justice curse—needed a $99 Texas Instruments TI83 graphing calculator, I had to open up to other options and started asking around. Sandra Byrne of Superior recommends Dollar Tree: “I just bought a scientific calculator at Dollar Tree. They have lots of school supplies.” Cheaper
Do they ever! They have elementary school supplies, but not a huge variety and no brand names. And every single thing is $1. I don’t know if Dollar Tree’s scientific calculator has all the functions required but I got one anyway to compare with the one I got off eBay, which got me thinking…
Go online for big ticket items. “Don’t they have an app for that?” joked Emily Baer from Superior when I complained about the calculator cutting into my budget.  “I have two daughters in high school, both of whose first item on their supplies list was ‘laptop’.”
After checking out all the local stores online for TI83 prices, I went to eBay where I settled on a used calculator for $29.99. I say settled because, while I could have gotten one for only $25.00, I paid the extra $5 for one with a return option. Cheaper but Riskier
Go online for everything. Crayola has their own supply packs by grade level for under $30. Compare it to your school supply list, add on what’s missing, proceed to Checkout and Boom! you’re done. Easier
There’s also a variety of online stores working with schools to do the supply shopping for you and, in some cases, raise money for your school. Dana Inerfeld of Broomfield uses Kids Klutter. “As a working mom, I don’t have time to shop around.” The Order My Pack program works with many local schools as a fundraiser but its deadline passed in July. Ask your school if a program is available for next year.
If your child qualifies for reduced or free lunches they may qualify for Crayons to Calculators, a nonprofit organization providing basic school supplies to Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley students. Have extra school supplies? Crayons to Calculators have local drop off points throughout the region. CrayonsToCalculators.org Cheaper
Sign up for offers online. Many stores offer specials to customers on their email lists. Lafayette’s own Jax Mercantile gives early notice of upcoming sales and exclusive coupons. I keep a separate email just for this sort of thing so I don’t worry about spam. Cheaper
Clean out your drawers. Dig around in your arts and craft supplies, junk drawers and the kids’ toy boxes. Seriously, how many pairs of Fiskars Kids Classic Blunt Tip 5-inch Scissors do schools expect us to buy? I’m pretty sure if I dig around in the couch I will find enough erasers for all my kids. You, your friends, or family may have perfectly good flash drives, rulers, and calculators lying around. Take a look at those folders from last year. Many of them may be in great shape. You’re not being cheap, you are just following that whole “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” lesson the kiddos learned last year on Earth Day. Cheaper
Shop really, really late. One last trick comes again from Jennifer Hart. “When the kids go to school, and everything gets marked down, I pick up pencils, crayons, paper, erasers, etc for half price and can restock throughout the year rather than paying full price.” Cheaper
Back to School Clothes
When I was inevitably dragged into the dreaded Justice store in the very depths of some wretched mall, with its walls dripping with happy sequined clothes, twinkly accessories, and adorable stuffies suicidally flinging themselves into my child’s eager hands, I understood for the briefest of moments, what Carrie White’s mother must have felt in the film Carrie (the superior 1976 version, obviously).
Shopping for back-to-school clothes is the true horror every parent faces. While $30 – $150 for school supplies may seem bad, at least schools have a limit to their monetary demands. But fashion’s price has… no… end.
School supplies and clothes share a lot of the same rules for survival. Make a list and stick with it. Clean out the closets to see what still fits and what the kids really need. Keep an eye out for sales and coupons at retail and discount stores. Compare prices. Shop around.
Consignment and thrift stores. This is where shopping local rules. It was that damn Justice store that enticed me into buying kids clothes at thrift stores and consignment shops. The moment I found a pair of size 10 Justice jeans at the ARC in Broomfield for $5.99—and then was half off of that—I became delirious. And when I found a pair of Burberry shorts for my youngest at Unique for $3.99, I was being all fancy like Iggy Azalea. North Denver and Eastern Boulder County have so many high quality second hand stores, it would be a sin not to check them out. Best of all, most stores have great Labor Day sales. Cheaper
When I’m feeling extra fancy, especially for my youngest, we go to consignment stores. I have been known to shove the kids straight into consignment clothes without even washing them, that’s how clean many of them are. For higher end name brands I go to Childish Things in Boulder. Kid to Kid in Arvada keeps it classy too with a big selection, and they carry some basic school uniform items too. If you don’t have time to cruise around from Goodwill to boutiques, ask around discreetly. Some moms keep the best places to themselves but if you compliment their child’s style they may let a few names slip.
Outlet and factory stores have better deals than regular stores of the same name. Here’s Jennifer Hart again, “I hit the outlets. Gymboree is my favorite. I get quality clothes for half off and while they are trendy and still ‘in style’ they are about half the price of going to a mall Gymboree and I earn gymbucks for holiday outfits!” I really need to go shopping with her, apparently. Cheaper
While we have no outlet mall around here, Loveland’s right up the highway—and boy do they love their outlet and factory stores. They’ve got Gymboree, Skechers, Polo, Tommy Hilfiger, Levi’s, Rue21, OshKosh, Nike, Reebok and more. Head South, way South, and there’s the Outlets at Castle Rock with much the same stores plus some big trendies like The North Face, Wet Seal, Columbia Sportswear, Hot Topic, Aeropostale, and H&M. Hang on, I’ll be fine, just let me just breathe into this paper bag for a while…
Once the snow starts, which could be any moment now, stop by the Silverthorne Factory Stores on your way to the slopes and you’ll find many of the same outlet stores.  But not North Face or H&M or Aero… I’ll need my paper bag again if I go on. One last trick: sometimes outlet and factory stores are right there out in the open at the mall or on the street. Keep an eye out for your favorites, check out their websites, or take a look at outlet-locator.com. I’d be checking out the Justice outlet store at Colorado Mills Mall if my oldest had not recently moved on from them. Suck it Justice!
If the consignment, thrift, and outlet stores don’t have what the kids want, give eBay, Amazon or other online retailers a try. The Internet has everything. Easier
Clothing exchanges, garage sales, and hand me downs. A lot of mom’s groups organize clothing exchanges once or twice a year. For every piece of child’s clothing you bring in you receive credit or a ticket. The clothes are organized by volunteers into gender, sizes and types, and on the day of the event you simply take as many clothes as you brought in. What is left over is then donated. I did this once and it was like shoplifting but without the fear of getting caught. Cheaper
I have heard the tale of far more organized moms than me setting up neighborhood clothing exchanges on their own with great success. Why quit with the hand me downs when the kids get older? Keep it up until they start saving their own money to buy what they want. Some people have good luck with garage sales but I have never had the patience to go door to door when there’s always a half price sale around the corner. Cheaper
And for those of you with plenty of money, no time, or a willingness to stand at the edge of the abyss and stare into the darkness, you could always hand your kids a credit card, gift cards, or cash, and simply drop them off at the mall. Now that’s really scary. Easier

The Med (officially, The Mediterranean) does a little bit of a lot of things with great aplomb. The menu combines Italian, Spanish, French and Greek cuisine in an array of tapas, salads, seafood, paella, grilled meats, pizzas and house-made baked goods and desserts. No wonder it’s a perennial favorite.

Contemporary American

Terroir : East County

As its name might suggest, Terroir takes seasonality and locale very seriously. Its menu draws inspiration from the Colorado land and landscape, offering modern American cuisine doused with the flavors of the Mediterranean.

Salt : Boulder

It was a bold move to take over the venerable Tom’s Tavern space, but with Salt’s farm-to-table menu and innovative cocktail program, it’s living up to the reputation long established at its historic locale.

Martino’s Pizzeria : East County

Since it opened, Martino’s has quickly become a YS staff lunch favorite, with tasty traditional thin-crust pies, unusual flavors and a gluten-free option that everyone from sales to graphics can enjoy—whether we’re normally gluten-free or not.

Snarf’s Sub Shop : Boulder

Whether you’re hankering for a classic Italian, a cheese and mushroom or a prime rib and provolone, you can’t beat Snarf’s for a tasty, toasty sandwich every time, served up in a colorful sub shop, quick as you please. And with six locations, you’re never far from satisfying a craving.

Indulge Bakery : East County

In the foodie faith, heaven is often described as a pastry shop, with gleaming glass cases brimming with gourmet treats as beautiful to behold as they are delicious to taste. Should you find yourself in need of a soul-stirring baked good, worship at the altar of Indulge and try a taste of heaven.

Tee & Cakes : Boulder

We recently discovered Tee & Cakes also sells really excellent Novo coffee, making that daily cupcake run just that much more legitimate. It’s a lot more socially acceptable to say you’re going to grab a cup of coffee than going to grab a cupcake…and maybe a whoopie pie…and some cookies…

Bagel

Big Daddy Bagels : East County

You may or may not be aware Big Daddy Bagels not only sells, well, really fine bagels, but they also toast them and put all sorts of fabulous things in the middle of them, creating bagel sandwiches that are some of the finest in the land. And their chocolate chip cookies aren’t half bad, either.

Moe’s Broadway Bagel : Boulder

Moe’s bagels are legit on two fronts: New York-style bagels served up in an atmosphere that couldn’t be anywhere but Boulder. Swoop in for a fix that’s Big Apple and People’s Republic all at once.

BBQ

KT’s Real Good BBQ : EC and B

With nearly 20 years and four locations under their belt, Kirk and Tricia Jamison (the eponymous KT) know a bit about barbecue. Their smoky trail took them from Seattle to Memphis to Boulder with a passion for great barbecue leading the way.

The Huckleberry : East County

Sitting in pride of place on a prominent corner in Louisville, stepping into Huckleberry feels a bit like stepping back in time for the kind of country breakfast you thought went the way of phone booth. It really doesn’t matter what you order. As the kids say, “it’s all good.”

Lucile’s Creole Cafe : Boulder

Biscuits, gravy, red beans and grits. Need we say more? OK, then how about chicory coffee and beignets. Yeah. Thought so.

Santiago’s : EC and B

On the Santiago’s website, there is a little ticker showing customer-submitted answers to the phrase, “You know you’re addicted to Santiago’s when…” Someone apparently submitted “…the burritos work faster than Viagra.” We don’t know about that, but now we’ll know a happy customer when we see one.

SmashBurger : East County

It’s all about the crispy bits. Smash that meat against the griddle and the edges get deliciously crispy and carbonized while the middle stays moist and juicy. Add to that the fact that you can get it built any way you like with a side of fried potato goodness and this becomes the fast-food burger joint that puts all the others
to shame.

Larkburger : Boulder

Oh, trendy hamburger paradise. Why must you be in Boulder while we languish 20 or 30 minutes away in East County? Please bring your black Angus burgers, your truffle fries and your real ice cream milk shakes out our way. We’ll love you better. Promise.

Chinese

Spice China : East County

You wouldn’t think a restaurant with a 20-page menu would need to add anything, but when Spice China added a sushi bar last year, it only made it better. Bring your reading glasses and dig in; everything’s good, Chinese, Japanese and beyond.

China Gourmet : Boulder

Don’t be shy; step up to the counter and order the best Chinese food in Boulder. Sure, the atmosphere may leave a little to be desired, but the food more than makes up for it. Lunch specials here are a great deal.

Coffee shop

Brewing Market Coffee : EC and B

Start with a great bean and you get a good brew. Add baristas who are never too busy to add a heart or leaf pattern to your latte and who never blink when you order something weird like decaf. Top with the genius of burritos heated on a panini press, and it’s pretty clear why Brewing Market leads the coffee chains around here.

Restaurant for a date

Magnolia : East County

Steak and sushi are sexy, but you can order anything off the menu at Magnolia and feel the romantic vibes. Allow us to recommend the blue crab macaroni and cheese, mon petit chou. A swank dining room and patio won’t hurt your cause either.

Frasca Food and Wine : Boulder

If your date knows anything about food or the restaurant scene in Colorado, just mentioning you’ve booked a table for two at Frasca will set her heart aflutter. Forgot the reservation? If the fates are with you, there might be room for two at the salumi table. Tell her you requested it specially. We won’t say anything.

Dessert

Indulge Bakery : East County

There’s a reason this place is called Indulge. It’s because you’re already thinking about dessert at 9 am on a Thursday. It’s because you plan ahead to swing by and pick up a “little something” for that special dinner at home. It’s because you’d rather go here than order off of a dessert menu anywhere else.

Tee & Cakes : Boulder

Cupcakes are the perfect dessert: they’re decadent without being overwhelming (no great wall of cake here); they’re individually sized so you don’t have to share; and they come in as many flavors as there are moods. Who cares what’s on the dessert list? Let’s just have cupcakes.

For Families

Zamparelli’s Italian Bistro : East County

Unlike most “family-friendly” pizza places, there are no scary animatronic creatures at Zamparelli’s. You will not be forced to listen to the ruckus of screaming children playing noisy midway games. Instead, you and the kids will experience real food from a real menu in a real restaurant. And bonus: They can make you a martini.

Turley’s : Boulder

Please don’t take this the wrong way Turley’s, but to us, you’re like an upscale Denny’s, made for families hungry for real food instead of corporate dreck. You’re the sort of place where parents can feel good about feeding their kids, and kids feel really good about the food on their plates. It’s a compliment; trust us.

Green Chile

Santiago’s : East County

Santiago’s now ships its chile all over the state and beyond. If that’s not a vote of confidence, we don’t know what is.

Efrain’s II : Boulder

The chile at Efrain’s reminds us of John Mellencamp crooning that it “hurts so good.” No greasy gravy here; just straight up authentic heat. Come on, baby. Make it hurt so good.

Indian

Taj Mahal : East County

Hiding in a nondescript strip mall is a jewel of India. Ornately decorated with food as exotic and rich as the décor. The lunch buffet is a steal, and the take away a great way to bring India home.

Bombay Bistro : Boulder

Fresh ingredients from local farms mix with modern and traditional Indian flavors in this hip, hot spot. Try the boneless beef short ribs for a taste of everything Indian cuisine can be. A new cocktail menu rounds out the experience with fresh flavors to compliment your meal.

Italian

Zamparelli’s Italian Bistro : East County

Zamparelli’s is so much more than pizza. Their risotto balls are transcendent. Their pastas hit the mark every time. Their salads go beyond just lettuce. If you can manage not to order one of their fantastic pizzas, you’ll realize they have fantastic everything else as well.

Laudisio : Boulder

Laudisio was farm-to-table before it was cool. For 20 years they’ve served up the very best in local products with a true Italian flare. Their wood-fired pizzas (and mobile oven) were ahead of the trend. In fact, Laudisio seems to be ahead of the curve in pretty much every department.

Mexican

Efrain’s : EC and B

Personally, I could eat the chile verde bowl (with a side of guacamole) at least once a week. It’s my favorite. But the mondongo bowl also has a crave-worthy allure, as does the mystique of the Efrain’s burrito. No matter what, you get something delicious, something that will soon become your favorite.

Patio

Martini’s Bistro : East County

Martini’s is always a nice spot for dinner or lunch. But come spring, the beautiful Victorian with charm unto itself opens its lovely patio for diners. It’s like a normal restaurant patio but with all the perks of a hip lounge—cozy chairs, fireplaces, perfect lighting, excellent people watching and cocktails, of course.

The Mediterranean : Boulder

The Med’s patio is coveted. If it’s not raining or snowing or doing one of Colorado’s odd climatic freakshows, you want a spot on the patio. You want it because, maybe, just maybe, the slight breeze, sunshine and fresh air will make you feel as though you are sitting seaside on the coast of Spain, eating mussels and paella.

Lunch

Sun Rose Cafe : East County

There’s no want for deliciousness at Sun Rose—it’s all yummy. But there is a special you get from a cup of homemade soup (it changes daily) and a smoked turkey and bacon panini with slices of avocado, sweet basil vinaigrette, sun dried tomatoes and Dijon mayo. It exemplifies the Longmont eatery’s balance between hearty, familiar flavors and homemade inventiveness.

The Mediterranean : Boulder

Power lunches are for getting work done (or at least looking like you’re getting work done). But ya’ll gotta eat too. The Med has long been a destination for East County and Boulder power-lunchers and casual-lunchers alike, serving up all sorts of amazing tapas and entrees. Kind of makes being productive a lot more appetizing.

Salad

Zamparelli’s : East County

There are salads and then there are Zamp’s salads. Never overwrought or overcrowded, these are light and scrumptious. The Caesar is a tangy spin on a classic (with buttery croutons), the arugula salad is doused in Parmigiano-Reggiano with a tangy balsamic, and the pear and gorgonzola has tremendous balance with fruit and cheese, walnuts and greens. It’s a whole new world of salads.

Mad Greens : Boulder

It happens all the time. You have 30 minutes for lunch, and your choices are a handful of fast food or fast casual eateries. But all you want is a spinach salad with grilled portobello, blue cheese, artichoke hearts, almonds and maybe shallot tarragon vinaigrette. McDonald’s definitely isn’t gonna do it. But Mad Greens really does do it your way.

Sandwich

Martino’s Pizzeria : East County

When you want your sandwich to be a little more like pizza—melted mozzarella, homemade tomato sauce and Italian sausage—you would be remiss to overlook the Italian grinder at Martino’s. It’s overflowing, rich and gratifying, this sandwich leaves you stuffed.

Snarf’s Sub Shop : Boulder

If you can stand its loud music and a little wait for the food: Snarf’s kitchen crew and amazing food make it totally worthwhile. These famous sandwiches are served on hot, fresh bread, and each ingredient is sure to have you’re taste buds tingling through to the very last bite.

Seafood

Tortuga’s : East County

Tortuga’s is consistently referred to as the “hidden gem” of Longmont. Set in a pretty little historic home, they serve up amazing Caribbean- and Southern-inspired fare with flavors that you can’t find anywhere else in the area. If you know what’s good for you, discover this gem.

Jax Fish House : Boulder

Jax garnered national fame when its chef Hosea Rosenberg won Top Chef a few years back. But way before Rosenberg wowed Bravo obsessees, Jax was making locals drool over stellar seafood. Jax consistently does inspired plates of beautiful fish and shellfish, paying homage to the natural flavors of the ocean and rivers while showing their innovative muscles.

Pizza

Martino’s Pizzeria : East County

In this day and age, it’s tough to find a place where all people with all dietary restrictions can gather and enjoy a meal together. But Martino’s has gluten-free, dairy-free, vegetarian and vegan options. It’s always a crowd pleaser—no matter how picky your crowd is. Martino’s unites us all!

Abo’s : Boulder

Abo’s serves up a straight-forward pizza that pleases both college students and wayward office workers searching for mid-day sustenance, especially when that’s a big, thin-crust slice of pepperoni pizza. Whether you’re on a country road in Erie or in the heart of Boulder, Abo’s has a slice waiting for you.

Steakhouse

Magnolia : East County

Magnolia is the James Franco of restaurants (it’s good at a lot of things). But steak? Their steaks are swagger and savoir fair, like their grilled Angus sirloin with roasted garlic demi, which is served with buttermilk onion rings. Delicious and sexy…like the time James Franco guest stared on General Hospital.

The Boulder Chophouse : Boulder

The Boulder Chophouse brings a bit of upscale romance to the traditional steakhouse concept. There are no peanuts on the floor, but there is meat—crazy good slabs of perfectly grilled, well-seasoned steak.

Sushi

Sushi Mara (Magnolia) : East County

Lafayette’s Magnolia has different personalities: At one moment it’s a steakhouse, the next you’re being served a beautiful salad and leg of lamb. Then you’re getting an annihilator roll and two orders of unagi. And that’s a good thing, because we know that no matter our mood, we’re covered.

Sushi Zanmai : Boulder

You leave Sushi Zanmai with a smile on your face. It’s the sake. Then, of course, you’ve just had more raw fish than a binging shark, and you stayed late to catch surprisingly tolerable karaoke. Just try not to smile.

Thai

Thai Kitchen : East County

Thai Kitchen is legit. Which is our way of saying the Longmont restaurant may be the easiest way to connect with Thai culture while staying in town. The dishes—like the larb, pad prig and Thai curries—are traditional, full of exotic flavors, spices and heat.

Chy Thai Cuisine : Boulder

I judge Thai food restaurants by their tom kha soup. It’s not as ubiquitous as pad thai or curries, and when you take a sip of a truly delicious tom kha, you know you’ve found something special. Chy Thai’s is spicy but sweet, filled with meaty mushrooms and a subtle perfume of lemongrass. From there, keep eating.

Vegetarian

Flavor of India Inc. : East County

This happens every year: Flavor of India, by no means a “vegetarian restaurant,” is voted best vegetarian restaurant. But we feel for the non-meat eaters, and we’re happy they’ve found solace in their veggie samosas, aloo gobi and sag paneer.

Leaf : Boulder

We have a couple of vegetarians on staff, and they are a vocal, passionate few (they’ve even muscled the meat-eaters into Meatless Mondays). Boulder’s Leaf is a celebration of them: a restaurant that honors the vegetarian, preparing truly delicious food sans animal.

Bar

Waterloo : East County

Waterloo is the little black dress of bars. Seriously, hear me out: it’s classic yet trendy, it’s sexy and cool, and your mom would totally approve. With exposed brick, local beers on tap and a band usually playing your song, no matter your mood, it’s just the right fit.

The Bitter Bar/Happy : Boulder

The Bitter Bar is an adventure. It can be a pick-your-own-adventure. Or you can stow away on one of their mixologist’s expeditions. Order off of the menu (the Aviation is a dream or try the Green Tea Pimm’s) or simply tell the bad-ass staff what you like. Either way, prepare for a journey.

Dive Bar

Dillinger’s Food & Spirits : East County

Discover your inner delinquent at this bar with wide-set bar stools and pool tables to break away from the usual crowd. Stop by to get real bar grub with a nice bottled beer.

The Dark Horse : Boulder

Make your way into the belly of the beast with this untamed bar. Much like its name signifies, you’ll dive into a darkened, tight-quartered tavern and relish the flea market décor galore. With food like peanut-butter cheeseburgers and flowing beer on tap, I challenge you to giddy up.

Pub/Tavern

Waterloo : East County

Pub must-haves: beer and food. Waterloo doesn’t just have food. It has a list of burgers (the potato burger will seduce you), barbecue and some killer jalapeno poppers that go perfectly with a glass of local beer. Done and done.

Conor O’Neill’s : Boulder

I have a confession: I’m a former Conor O’Neill’s regular. The reason for the “former” has less to do with Conor O’Neill’s and more to do with me no longer being a barfly (that happens when you age). But as I think about having a boxty and a pint of Strongbow, there are still temptations.

Brewery

Oskar Blues : East County

If breweries were periods of ancient civilization, Oskar Blues would be the Roman Empire. It seems, these days, the funky Lyons brewpub has exploded with multiple locations—a restaurant and a tasting room—and a true national brand. We’re just the beneficiaries of their reign.

Boulder Beer Company : Boulder

The creations of Boulder Beer are crowd pleasers: drinkable but inventive, bold and flavorful. It’s no wonder our readers drink Boulder Beer’s beers by…well…the pint.

Magnolia : East County

The James Beard Foundation has repeatedly honored Bobby Stuckey, the co-owner of Frasca and master sommelier, for his mad skills as the wine director at Boulder’s Friulian gem. I was raised to believe in the power of a bargain. The women of my family have a sixth sense for knowing when and where that 25-percent-off sign will magically transform into a 50-percent-off sign, and we never pay full retail if we can help it. My mother is the undisputed queen of the department store coupon; my sister once bought a formal prom dress for $15. And I? I am blessed with the infinite patience necessary to scour the racks of outlet stores, consignment shops and discount department stores until I stumble across the perfect piece.

But a single perfect sweater or $7 pair of designer jeans does not an outfit make. The art of scoring a reduced-price outfit often requires many shopping trips to many different stores, but I wondered if the ultimate feat could be accomplished: could I find an entire outfit in my favorite bargain shopping spots—for under $100?

Enter Jill Jones, YS stylist, fashonista and shopper extraordinaire. It’s always been my dream to have a stylist hold my hand whilst selecting clothes that will transform me into a perfectly coiffed sartorialist and explaining to me all the mysteries of fashion, and this challenge seems like the perfect excuse to do it. Jill is game but balks a little when I tell her where we’re going. “You probably aren’t going to find an entire outfit at a consignment store,” she tells me gently, as if explaining the truth about Santa Claus to a small child. “We’ll probably have to visit a few other places to round things out.”

But I have an ace up my sleeve: Rags Consignment in Boulder is not just a consignment shop; it is a carefully edited and expertly curated selection of gently worn (and sometimes brand new) merchandise consigned by some of Boulder County’s best and brightest.

We arrive bright and early on a Tuesday morning, and I’m shocked to see how many other shoppers there are at a time when I thought we would have the place to ourselves. Clearly, my secret shopping spot is not as secret as I had thought. Jill is immediately impressed. “I haven’t been here in about 10 years,” she admits. “They’ve got a wonderful selection.”

She then gets down to business, reading out a list of things for me to look for.
“I’m thinking a high-waisted trouser jean, a blazer, or maybe a trench, a billowy blouse…I’ll start with the jeans, you start with the jackets.”

We fall into a rhythm, the methodical scrape of hangers against racks like a metronome counting the time. I pull out two, three, four jackets and hold them up for Jill’s approval. When we’ve each collected a handful of items, we commandeer a corner of the buying counter and start laying out our discoveries. All the jackets are nice in their own way, but they aren’t exactly what we are looking for. “There was a green one,” I venture, “but I thought it might be too bright.”

“Show me,” Jill commands.

It’s perfect. We find a lacy white tank top to go underneath it and then scour the shoes. An adorable pair of silver flats jump out at us and tie the whole thing together beautifully. The grand total? $88.40 before tax, leaving more than enough cash left over to pick up a bag or a cute bauble from the front counter.

But Jill isn’t done. She’s found a pair of perfectly broken-in chestnut colored cowboy boots and she wants to create a second outfit around them. “When I shop at consignment stores, I always look for leather boots, brand-name sweaters and blazers,” she says. I hastily scribble down these pearls of wisdom. I’ve produced a high-collared sheer blouse that she falls for head over heels.

“Fall in Colorado,” she muses. “I think shorts are still an option, don’t you?” She pulls out a pair of Calvin Klein denim shorts and a J. Crew belt that meld the disparate romantic blouse and down-to-earth boots into a seamless whole.

At $32.75, the boots are the most expensive thing we’ve picked out all day, but it works; the entire outfit totals at exactly $100 before tax. We’ve done it; and not once,
but twice.

Shopping for the Kids

We decided to head to Longmont to check out a place I’ve heard good things about for kids’ clothes. Fall is back-to-school time, and for most families, that can mean a new wardrobe for the kids; it seems like the Colorado summer sun can fuel growth spurts that add inches and change last year’s too-long pants into this year’s high-waters. But whether your child is in need of a entirely new look through true need or just a desire to look super cute for the first day of school, it’s no reason to blow your budget.

ShopKids consignment in Longmont seems unassuming from the outside, but inside, we realize it’s a veritable treasure trove of clothes, toys and baby gear. Unfortunately, the selection is mostly for kiddos a little under the school age, but we dive in and quickly find some amazing bargains for a stylish little man heading into first grade. He’ll be the envy of all the children in a Kenneth Cole faux leather jacket (and mom will be the envy of all the mother’s when—and if—she confides it was only $15).

But there’s not much here for the older set, so after a quick restorative lunch, we head back to Boulder and hit up Marshall’s. When we arrive, I expect a traditional discount department store, but what I’m met with is anything but, proving that discount stores serving higher income areas will always yield better bounty.

Jill dives head first into the juniors section, pulling out armloads of cute clothes that are on trend.

“The key is to buy the trendy stuff someplace like this,” she explains. “Save the big bucks for things that will be in style for a long time.” We sort through the stacks, editing judiciously, and end up with a cute plaid tunic top (hitting two trends at once), a pair of skinny jeans, and a pair of slouchy gray boots that I would pretty much love for myself. And we still manage to come in under $100.

Weary but extremely fulfilled, we load up the car and head for home.

Bargain shopping is an art form, not a science; some days shoppers will surely score big, as we did, and other days they’ll strike out. But for the savvy shopper with the right attitude, the super steals are just waiting to be made.

1. Vie Vie Luxe
A fashion boutique on Main Street was long overdue. Luckily this store opened last month featuring luxurious women’s clothing (cashmere sweaters, beautiful semi-precious stone belt buckles) and a few unusually fun items (gift box cards and trendy tampon holders). 909 Main St. 303.968.4317

2. Café de Paris
You can get all the normal goodies at this sidewalk café that opened in August, but that wouldn’t be any fun. Take advantage of the Moroccan offerings such as traditional teas, jasmine milk and pancakes served with honey butter. 908 Main St. 303.665.9716.

3. The Bronze Elk
With décor fit for your Aspen estate, this newish store seems a little out of place in Louisville. But the tree-trunk style furniture and incredibly cute dog, cat and frog sculptures are worth a stop.

4. Waterloo Icehouse
The Druid’s Arms is gone, and the space has received a significant facelift as new owners have transformed it into an upscale watering hole serving organic food by day, cool spirits by night, and featuring live music three nights a week. 5. Old Louisville Inn
With new replacing old at every turn, the Inn is a historic glimpse back 102 years. Its antique, woody bar conjures images of the Old West, and an immense menu offers plenty of tasty options.

iCAN’T BELIEVE THE REFUND
I can’t remember the last time Apple dropped the price of an existing product, but dropped it they have. It discontinuing the $499, 4-gig iPhone and dropping the $599 8-gig version $200, merely two months after it hit the shelves. Meanwhile, they’ve released the iTouch, the new iPod, which is basically the iPhone without the phone. Slated to roll off the line next is the iRide, a new car with no wheels, and the iPresident, also called George W. Bush…

…And by the way, when was the last time you went to a store and bought something, only to see it go on sale soon after? How about 60 days later? Would you expect the store to refund any part of the difference? Me neither. Good show, Steve Jobs, for giving $100 of store credit to everyone who purchased the iPhone prior to the price drop. Good show, indeed.

IT’S ALL WORKING OUT, RIGHT?
Mi2n.com reports, “Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI), the U.S. music performing right organization, announced that it will distribute more than $732 million in royalties for its 2006-07 fiscal year to the songwriters, composers and copyright owners it represents, an 8 percent increase over the prior fiscal year.

“BMI attributed the rise in revenues to its robust music catalog, the successful licensing of music across a diverse range
of media.”

Meanwhile, Wired Magazine reports, “According to BigChampagne.com, an online measuring service, the number of peer-to-peer users unlawfully trading goods has nearly tripled since 2003, when there were 3.8 million file sharers trading over the Internet at a given time. Now, the group has measured a record 9 million so-called ‘simultaneous’ users trading at the same time.” Huh. Gosh, the RIAA would have us believe these two phenomena to be mutually inexclusive events.

That’s why they’re suing 20,000 people, right? To save the artists’ money, right?

YES, THE VIEW IS STILL ON TV
So, “The View” now has Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd on staff, rounding out the complete fivesome for the first time in more than a year. In related news, still, no one gives a damn.

WALKING A THIN LINE
Biometrics are definitely a good means to insure against identity theft. But what about the invasion of privacy they bring with them? The Cincinnati Post reported last month that a local Catholic school had installed fingerprint scanners for their children to use to buy food—not too mention, keeping records of what’s purchased. Makes sense for parents, who rightfully want to know that their kids are eating well. But how hard is it to make this leap: Health insurance companies requiring the use of similar means to track what people are buying at the grocery store? Follow that to its logical conclusion, and you have personal, identifiable record keeping for every single purchase someone makes. And with memory costs plummeting, that means indefinite storage. Think about that one for a while, folks.

It’s never been easy doing business in Old Town Erie, given the sleepy little area doesn’t have a critical mass of residents that flock to its cafes, shops and restaurants. Even so, it’s expensive to open a business downtown if you need to make changes to the building. The city’s impact fees that pay for town infrastructure dwarf those charged by surrounding towns. There are many who think the price of doing business here is a deterrent. The town will now study offsetting the fees for businesses in the historic downtown.

What’s Next: Trustees will discuss this in October, and it sounds like they understand the importance of keeping Old Town business costs low.
