Lotus and Lion:

An International Exhibition of Contemporary Buddhist and Hindu Art

We are pleased to announce Lotus and Lion—a groundbreaking exhibition that invites visitors into a contemplative, immersive journey through sacred art, set within a serene mountain landscape. Opening May 23 with a special reception from 5–7 PM, this juried exhibition will be on view through September 2, Wednesday through Sunday, from 10 AM to 5 PM at Shoshoni Yoga Retreat.

Lotus and Lion presents a dynamic and diverse array of contemporary works inspired by the profound traditions of Buddhism and Hinduism. Featuring original paintings, thangkas, sculpture, printmaking, mixed media, and more, the exhibition reimagines ancient archetypes through the lens of modern expression—inviting reflection, reverence, and discovery.

In an era increasingly defined by digital experiences, Lotus and Lion offers a rare opportunity to engage with sacred art in person. The natural beauty and contemplative atmosphere of Shoshoni Yoga Retreat provide an ideal setting to experience these works as they were intended: not simply as objects of aesthetic admiration, but as vessels of wisdom, presence, and spiritual resonance.

The exhibition brings together 45 artists from across the globe, uniting emerging voices with internationally acclaimed masters. Among those is Tibetan painter Karma Phuntsok, whose series 3 Three Precious Jewels, is currently featured at the Denver Art Museum. He will debut new original pieces created specifically for Lotus and Lion.

Whether you’re a collector, a seeker, or simply drawn to the transformative power of art, Lotus and Lion offers a space to connect with the sacred, contemplate timeless truths, and find inspiration for navigating the complexities of modern life.

ABOUT THE JURORS:

Faith Stone

Faith Stone is a seasoned artist whose exploration of carving and painting Buddhas spans over

more than three decades, marked by a deep immersion in the traditional art of Tibetan thangka

painting. For 20 years, Faith dedicated herself to mastering the intricacies of thangka, honoring

sacred proportions, and capturing the essence of traditional Buddhist art while bridging ancient

practices with modern interpretations.Beyond her canvas, Faith has assumed the role of a guardian of cultural heritage. Over the past 10 years she has been fervently committed to the preservation and revival of BuddhaWoodblocks, particularly Thangka woodblocks. This art form faced endangerment in the wake of the Chinese Communist invasion of Tibet. Faith’s dedication has made her one of the few artists worldwide engaged in the intricate processes of carving and hand-printing Buddhist woodblocks.

Sarah Magnatta Ph.D.

Sarah Magnatta is an assistant professor of art history at the University of Denver. She received

her Ph.D. in art history from the Ohio State University and specializes in global contemporary art

and museum studies. She previously worked at the Denver Art Museum and has curated several exhibitions, including Gonkar Gyatso: Intimacy and Immediacy at the Vicki Myhren Gallery in Denver. She also curated Tenzing Rigdol’s first solo U.S. exhibition, My World Is in Your Blind Spot at the Emmanuel Art Gallery in Denver and the Tibet House U.S. in New York City. Sarah’s research largely concerns issues of transnationalism and mobilities in contemporary art; her current book project is tentatively titled Contemporary Art of the Tibetan Diaspora. She has published essays in Art Journal, Journal of the British Association for South Asian Studies, the Journal of Aesthetics and Culture, and the Routledge Handbook of Asian Transnationalism. She teaches courses on contemporary art through global perspectives and is especially interested in challenging art historical and museum hegemonies.
