The Global Village Museum of Arts and Cultures is proud to host a powerful presentation on the devastating earthquakes that struck southeastern Turkey in 2023, on Thursday, July 17 at 6 pm. The Museum is partnering with the Turkish American Cultural Society of Colorado (TACSCO) to highlight the ongoing earthquake relief efforts and offer a preview of the upcoming Annual Turkish Festival & Fundraiser.
Two massive quakes in Turkey, measuring 7.7 and 7.6 in magnitude, killed over 50,000 people and impacted more than 850,000 children on February 6, 2023. In response, TACSCO launched an initiative to support 48 children who lost one or both parents. The program provides school scholarships, laptops, and vital psychological, social, and emergency care to children in primary, middle, and high school.
In addition to raising awareness for these efforts, the presentation will preview TACSCO’s Annual Turkish Festival & Fundraiser, taking place in Fort Collins on August 24. This vibrant celebration of Turkish culture will include the following highlights:
Mevlevi (Whirling Dervish) Performance – A spiritual dance symbolizing unity and devotion
Turkish Calligraphy – A highly ornamental writing technique which will be presented by a state-recognized artist
Ebru Water Marbling – A mesmerizing and centuries-old painting technique
Traditional Henna Night Show – A lively tradition full of music and cultural rituals
Turkish Coffee & Fortune Telling – A form of divination using patterns and shapes formed by coffee grounds to read a person’s fortune
All proceeds from the festival will support TACSCO’s relief program. Attendees will enjoy complimentary Turkish appetizers and sweets while learning how to get involved. Join us for a heartfelt and inspiring evening to support healing and celebrate heritage!
Museum hours: 11 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday
