CMDI Public Conversations: Who Gets to Be American, and Why?

Join us for a presentation and Q&A based on American Otherness in Journalism, with historic and contemporary examples of how news media shapes our narratives about national identity.

At a time when historic ideas of the United States as a multicultural “nation of immigrants” have been replaced by “America First” and ICE raids, how does mainstream news media help construct Americanness?

Associate Professor of Journalism Angie Chuang, a former newspaper reporter, discusses how new book, American Otherness in Journalism: News Media Representations of Identity and Belonging, helps illuminate how and why the scope who belongs as an American is being narrowed.
