Cantabile Opening Concert: “Rediscovery”
The centerpiece of our season opener is the rediscovered cantata Abraham Lincoln Walks at Midnight, by African-American composer Florence Price. Originally composed for orchestra, Price rearranged the cantata for piano accompaniment with choir and baritone soloist.
As with Price, other composers rearrange or rewrite compositions—both their own and those by others. Our program also explores the theme of re-envisioning, featuring an 8-part vocal transcription of Gustav Mahler’s Urlicht, the fourth movement from his 2nd Symphony.
Another theme of the program is imagining what music Abraham Lincoln might have listened to, which sparked the inclusion of other arrangements of Americana music.
