Voices of Change First Storytellers: An Evening with Native American Playwrights

Boulder’s all-Indigenous led artists collective Creative Nations joins us for an evening featuring playwrights from their First Storytellers Festival. Excerpts will be performed

live by Indigenous actors followed by a conversation about the challenges of telling Native stories. Co-presented with the Longmont Multicultural Action Committee.

Creative Nations is an all Indigenous-led artists collective, founded in 2020 at The Dairy Arts Center in Boulder, CO. We operate the Sacred Space, a permanent establishment for Indigenous Artists to create and share their work.

–Accurate Representation – To provide accurate representation of Native arts: Our world needs more Indigenous representation, not just for diversity and equity’s sake. Indigenous culture teaches reverence for the Earth—plants, animals, and even objects are to be honored. By fostering a relationship with the environment through mindfulness and conservation and moving away from colonial behavior, humanity can find greater peace, wisdom, and harmony.

–Focus on the Next Generation – To create opportunities, resources, and platforms for emerging artists and youth through exhibitions, performances, and mentorship: As the 7th generation prophecy states, today’s youth are here to heal the world. This generation of artists is poised to do great things and needs a platform for their work.

–Inclusion and Balance – To foster empowerment of women and Two-Spirit & Non-binary energies through Indigenous cultural traditions to bring about a balance between the masculine and feminine: This is the Age of the Daughters and the White Buffalo Woman and it ushers in a rise in feminine energy to balance the masculine. By recognizing individual beauty and supporting the power within each individual, a more balanced union and sum of the parts allows the collective voice to speak with greater power and purpose.

–Create Community – To grow the Native community engaged with our dedicated multi-functional space, coming together in sacred creativity: Art has the power to create community and bring people together organically. It is our sacred duty to utilize our position as community culture bearers to develop places where Native people can come together as one.
