Ruin: A New Play at Dairy Center for the Arts

Take a historic look into Colorado’s past via Blunt Force Drama and its premiere of Ruin: A New Play by Aaron Klass. It takes place in the Colorado territory during the spring of 1865 (many years prior to Colorado achieving statehood), in the ruins of old Fort Vasquez. A woman enlists the help of two frontiersmen to find her missing husband and the investigation leads them through an unexpected journey. Drawing on historical source material, this script paints a fictional portrait of the early years of Colorado’s history. The Flobots at Levitt Pavilion 

“For us, the question remains the same. How do we use our music to speak to inspire positive transformation? And the answer is the same: we have to reach people deep down — in unexpected, visceral ways.” That quote is from Flobots frontman Jamie “Jonny 5” Laurie’s interview with YS back in 2017, while the band was touring in support of that year’s release NoEnemies, a double-EP of original and well-known protest songs. Since then, they’ve continued to tour heavily and released several new singles, all featuring their patented style of politically relevant activist hip-hop. Original art by Luis Eades at Dairy Center for the Arts

The Dairy Center for the Arts is home to a few visual arts galleries. Beginning July 7 is an exhibition of original paintings by Luis Eades, with an opening reception on July 8 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Eades was born in Madrid, Spain in 1923. His artistic career spanned nine decades and brought him to teach painting at the University of Colorado at Boulder for 38 years. “I make allusions in my work to the art of the past, as well as to cultures other than my own; I do so out of respect and because they have produced images and ideas that endure and enrich the way we perceive the world we live in,” Eades says in an artist statement from a previous exhibition at the William Havu Gallery in Denver. Los Lobos with Ozomatli at Chautauqua Auditorium 

Iconic American rock band Los Lobos is an unparalleled celebration of American cultural diversity, drawing from a deep well of influences including rock, folk, blues, and traditional Mexican music that spans across a career of more than four decades. They’ll be joined by LA-bred Grammy Award winners Ozomatli for what promises to be an unforgettable show at Chautauqua Auditorium on July 8. Ozomatli’s eclectic sound blends Latin, hip-hop, reggae, funk, and rock influences into a wholly unique and stunning conflagration of musical genius. agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land at various locations in Boulder

In agriCULTURE: Art Inspired by the Land, 18 local and national visual artists, in collaboration with Boulder County farmers, are exhibiting their works to showcase the connections between art and agriculture. These artists were commissioned to collaborate with farmers to shed light on the practices being used by the farming industry throughout the Front Range. The multi-venue exhibit includes work on view at two museums and site-specific installations at three local farms, including Ollin Farms in Longmont, the. Boulder JCC Milk & Honey Farm, and the Agricultural Heritage Center in Longmont. For details on all the locations, visit agriculture.stqry.app. These exhibits are now open through October 1, 2023.

The Book of Mormon at Buell Theatre 

One of the biggest and most extravagant musicals to tour the country is back in Denver for a few weeks – and tickets will surely be hard to come by. Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s hit musical The Book of Mormon returns to the Buell Theatre from June 21–July 2. The mega-hit musical follows the story of a pair of missionaries sent to the other side of the world. The original Broadway musical won nine Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the New York Times has called it, “the best musical of this century.” Tickets range from $35 to $130. July 1: Flobots

Homegrown hip-hop darlings the Flobots make their Levitt Pavilion debut on the tail-end of their popular United States of Mind tour for what will be a fantastic, free show. Though their last full-length album Noenemies dropped in 2017, the band has released multiple singles since, and continues to bring smart, social commentary to the Colorado rap game. July 2: Toad the Wet Sprocket

It’s been 34 years since Toad the Wet Sprocket’s first album Bread & Circus (Abe Records, 1989) dropped to little fanfare. It wasn’t until their third outing, Fear (Columbia Records, 1991) that the band catapulted into national consciousness, thanks to two singles —  “All I Want” and “Walk on the Ocean” — charting on Billboard’s Top 20. Now touring in support of their new compilation album All You Want, they stop in at Mishawaka Amphitheatre for a Poudre River session. July 20: Cypress Hill with The Colorado Symphony

Cypress Hill became the first hip-hop group to have two albums on the charts at the same time when Black Sunday (Ruffhouse Records) debuted at #1 on the Billboard Top 200 on this date back in 1993. They’re upping their game for this 30th anniversary as they’ll be joined by the Colorado Symphony at Mission Ballroom in Denver to revisit the incredibly popular record, which went triple platinum. Aug. 9: Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue with Ziggy Marley

Ziggy Marley isn’t the only great act joining Trombone Shorty at Levitt Pavilion in Denver for this one. One thing that separates Colorado from the pack when it comes to live music is the absolute avalanche of incredible tours, settings, and performances slated throughout the summer. After the trials of the COVID pandemic over the last few years, the floodgates opened for 2022, and we think we’d be remiss if we didn’t pony up another batch of end-of-summer slam dunks for live music you need to slap on your calendar.

Head for the Hills at Levitt Pavilion

“Beyond it being a beautiful, inspiring place to live, Colorado’s always had a great music scene,” said Joe Lessard, fiddle player for the beloved Head for the Hills grass-tet from Ft. Collins when we interviewed him in 2019.  “There’s a tight-knit community of music people of all sorts here, from players to festival promoters to production folks.” That spirit comes alive at their big return to Levitt Pavilion on Aug. 5. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band at Mishawaka Amphitheatre

It’s been more than half a century since the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band brought its country rock sounds from Long Beach, CA to the rest of the world, including more than two dozen albums and a slew of Country Music Awards, nominations and Grammy awards, to boot. Taste of Colorado

As street fairs go, few have the longevity or diversity of the perennial Taste of Colorado. With roots dating back to 1895 as the “Festival of Mountain and Plain,” the Downtown Denver Partnership has curated this showcase of Denver food and talent for more than four decades as the traditional summer-set event for the Mile High. This year’s slate of music includes six stages and dozens of bands, including Same Cloth, Sarah Mount and the Rushmores, Tivoli Club Brass Band, Paizley Park, Nelson Rangell, Cocktail Revolution, Venus Cruz, Blink 303, N3ptune and so many more. NIN at Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Back on tour for the first time since 2018, Nine Inch Nails brings Trent Reznor’s industrial sound to Red Rocks in one of only a handful of stops around the United States. After a previous outing was foiled by COVID, the band has plenty of new material to share, with work spanning two albums Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts (The Null Corporation, 2020) as well as soundtrack cuts for film and television shows like Bird Box, the Watchmen and Soul. Flogging Molly at Mission Ballroom

Once darlings of the Vans Warped Tour, Flogging Molly may have surfaced after the hey-day of punk, but all that means is they were a little late to the party. Dublin-born frontman Dave King is the cornerstone asset to the authentic Irish punk cathedral that sprang from the L.A. punk scene in the late-’90s, bringing with it a sweaty brogueish swagger that remains unquestionably loved for all its emerald-green glow. Bert Kreischer at Red Rocks

Few things are funnier than the bare skinned, barrel-chested Bert Kreischer’s reminiscence of his college trip to post USSR Russia and his accidental honorary membership into the Russian mafia, where he was celebrated as “The Machine!” thanks to his lack of decent conversational Russian skills. Kreischer is a dyed-in-the-wool storyteller who remains on a comedic comet ride, and can sell out mid-sized venues like Red Rocks without a problem. Sept. 13, 7:30 p.m., $50+, www.redrocksonline.com

Rodrigo y Gabriela at Chautauqua Auditorium

Rodrigo y Gabriela have firmly entrenched themselves as an unmatched live act dating back to their eponymous debut album in 2006. Their flamenco-soaked rhythms and unyielding energy are absolutely riveting to watch as much as they are compelling to listen to, and it’s why they can sell out everywhere the play — from the Hollywood Bowl to Red Rocks Amphitheater. More good stuff to see on stage this summer

As the spring and its rain and fickleness give way to summer, we start to see events move from indoors to outdoors. Concerts in the summer sun, plays seen barefoot in the grass, the voices of opera singers cutting through the blue sky, the time to dance and play outside is upon us. Colorado is known for its wealth of outdoor venues and events. Here are some that we’re most excited about this summer.

Levitt Pavilion Denver Concert Series

Levitt Pavilion’s Summer Concert Series is perhaps one of the most interesting going on this summer in that its lineup is incredibly diverse and features many free shows. A few of the most eclectic acts are Colorado’s own Gasoline Lollipops, 80s wonder Tears for Fears, jamtronica pioneers STS9, angst-ridden favorites Rise Against and the Used, and looping legend Keller Williams. Levitt Pavilion also makes a point to feature music from all around the world. Take advantage of their free outdoor concerts, and get some culture in your life.

Boulder’s Central Park Bandshell

The Boulder Bandshell, located smack dab in the center of the town, has a variety of interesting events throughout the summer. This includes beer fests, concerts featuring the Nuns of Brixton, a Clash/late 70s punk cover band that dresses like nuns, and much more. One of the events we’re most excited about has to be Opera in the Park 2022: Eras of Opera. This show will take the audience through the history of opera, starting pre-16th century and working its way through the ages until it reaches modernity. It will feature some of Boulder’s rising musical talents and will serve as a great introduction to opera for the uninitiated as well as a delightful celebration of the art form for those more experienced.

Colorado Renaissance Festival

The Colorado Renaissance Festival is something special—an anachronistic recreation of the Middle Ages sans all the plague and starvation and general air of suffering. Instead, it’s a joyous affair replete with jesters yelling jokes at you from the top of a castle rampart as you walk in; strange nymphs peeking out from behind the scenes and occasionally venturing out to dance and sing and say strange, cryptic things; and valiant knights jousting in the hopes of gaining favor with the queen. It is a place simultaneously educational and comical, innocent, and debaucherous. The food is hearty, the ale everflowing, and you just might leave with a renewed feeling that chivalry hasn’t gone the way of the dark ages quite yet.

Mishawaka Amphitheater

The Mish is one of the most unique venues in the state. It’s quite small despite its popularity. It’s also rather removed from civilization. This adds to the experience, however. The stars shine bright over the stage, and water rushes through the river behind it. There’s very little cell reception, so you’re encouraged to stick with the people you came with and bond with those you didn’t. The dance floor is made of sand, which encourages one to remove their shoes and boogie barefoot. There are campsites all around the area, so, if you get there early enough to claim one, there are no worries about figuring out how to get home after a few too many. Just set up a tent or even sleep in the car if it’s a little chilly. Upcoming shows include conscious-hop favorite The Polish Ambassador, bluegrass staples Head for the Hills, psych-pop trailblazers Animal Collective, and Colorado rivergrass legends Leftover Salmon featuring Boulder locals Tenth Mountain Division.

Denver Pride Festival

One of the biggest events in Denver, the Denver Pride Fest, has been known to attract over 500,000 attendees, all gathering together to celebrate Pride with music, food, beer, marching, dancing, floats, and more. Held on June 25 and 26, It’s a beautiful event that praises the beauty within us all. 

Denver’s First Friday Art Walks

Denver’s Santa Fe art district is one of the city’s most unique areas. It features a multiple-block stretch where every other building is an art gallery of some kind. On the first Friday of every month in the summer, these galleries are open to the public. Masses gather to stroll, appreciate, and perhaps purchase pieces from the incredible talent that lives within the city. One can see everything from interpretive dance performances, New Mexico-inspired indigenous works, student projects, people hustling in the street trying to get their names out there, and so much more. It’s a celebration of a city known for its art, food, music, and people. 

Colorado Shakespeare Festival

Since 1958, the University of Colorado Boulder has hosted the Colorado Shakespeare Festival, a comprehensive celebration of the Bard that includes performances of nearly all of his plays, discussions and analyses of his work, and camps meant to introduce him to children. If you have any interest in arguably the most influential figure in the history of literature, do not miss out.

Malinalli on the Rocks

Hosted by Museo de Las Americas, Malinalli on the Rocks is an exploration of one of the most controversial and enigmatic figures in the history of the Americas: La Malinche. Simultaneously celebrated and reviled, La Malinche served as the Spanish conquistador Herman Cortes’s interpreter and guide during his conquest of Mayan culture. This exhibit attempts to remove the patriarchal light in which she has been painted throughout history in order to examine the woman she truly was. 

Central City Opera Festival

The Central City Opera Festival is a rather prestigious affair. It’s the biggest opera event in the state, runs all summer long, and includes performances of some of the greatest works ever created within the medium. It also features discussions with experts before and after performances, lunches put to music, and fine dining. 

Denver Chalk Art Festival

Hosted in June by the Larimer Arts Association, Denver Chalk Art Festival takes place in Larimer Square and features over 200 artists creating their works on pavement, adding even more beauty and color to an already vibrant part of the city. The event will also feature live music, wine and beer, and tons of food options for you to enjoy as the aspiring madonarris (professional chalk artists) do their thing. 

Denver Fringe Festival

Denver Fringe Festival is a celebration of the weird and the unique. It features a diverse line-up of performance art, ranging from comedy to burlesque, plays to interpretive dance and flow art. Many of the time, the performances are a mixture of a little bit of everything. You are guaranteed to see something you’ve never quite seen before.

DJ Greyboy at Fox Theatre

When it comes to the Greyboy All-Stars, saxophonist and co-founder Karl Denson waxed poetically on the lightning-in-a-bottle that is the group’s unique genius. “Greyboy Allstars is kind of a freak of nature, so writing tunes for me tends to be a lot easier because of the input, but it also tends to be a lot more pointed in terms of what you can get away with,” he said in an interview with YS in 2015. So we’re really interested to see how — if at all — that compositional spirit bleeds over into DJ Greyboy’s (a.k.a. Andreas Stevens) solo set.

Check him out at the Fox Theatre at 8 p.m. on Aug. 21. Tickets start at $20 and are available at axs.com.

Head for the Hills at Levitt Pavilion

Sure, Yonder Mountain String Band’s the headliner, and they’re a great group, but can we talk about Head for the Hills for a minute? There’s nothing it seems they can’t accomplish — especially when they add a horn section — as evidenced in their 15 years touring and recording together, even charting on the CMJ Top 200 twice. They write punchy songs with great hooks and outstanding vocal harmonies that seem to transcend the “string band” genre without warping into a commoditized radio-pop  miasma.

Simphiwe Ndzube at the Denver Art Museum

South African contemporary artist Simphiwe Ndzube is celebrating his first solo museum exhibition – now on display at the Denver Art Museum. Titled Oracles of the Pink Universe, the exhibit is a collection of eight new works that explore the relationship between history and magical realism. His works are vibrant paintings and sculptures, some of which even transform from two to three-dimensional pieces, enhancing his magical exploration — all of which confront the viewer’s perception of what is and is not possible. This exhibit runs through Oct. 10.

JQA at various locations

Butterfly Effect Theatre of Colorado (formerly Boulder Ensemble Theatre Company) takes its show on the road, bringing a compelling new work to audiences all over Colorado thanks to its genius new “Theatre Truck.” This free, outdoor production invites you to bring a picnic and join them for JQA by Aaron Posner – a compelling new work in which the author imagines conversations between John Quincy Adams and George Washington, Frederick Douglass, and Abigail Adams, as well as several other historical figures in U.S history.

The Theatre Truck brings JQA to locations from Boulder to Longmont and Denver, with performances through August. Free to attend. Get all the information at www.betc.org.

Tales from the Tipping Point at the Dairy Center for the Arts

If you’re looking for something totally unique, you’ll want to check out Tales from the Tipping Point from Now or Never Theatre, playing Aug. 12–15 at the Dairy Center for the Arts in Boulder. This show, written and performed by Betsy Tobin, includes the use of shadow puppets, plastics, hand puppets, and more to provide a brief history of consumerism. You’ll travel with the author through the cosmos using sets and costumes created from upcycled materials and homemade instruments to learn about sustainability through immersive shadows and video imagery.

Colorado has a new outdoor live music venue — the only one in the Denver city limits, and it’s an incredible gem. No one is more responsible for bringing Levitt Pavilion to life than Chris Zacher, former president of the famed City Park Jazz Board of Directors.

 

Zacher was recognized by the Denver Business Journal as one of Denver’s “Forty Under 40” for his commitment and leadership to Denver’s non-profit community; since 2012, he’s led Denver’s effort to create the new Levitt Pavilion at Ruby Hill Park. Jolon Clark, Denver City Councilman District 7 summed it up when he said, “Chris Zacher’s leadership has been critical to getting this unique public/private partnership off the ground, and his continued enthusiasm and energy will be critical to its success. We will have a unique cultural asset with the Levitt Pavilion at Ruby Hill, but we’ll have it only because we a already have a unique cultural asset in Chris Zacher.” Here, Chris talks about how massive an undertaking the project was, what it means for local musicians, and just how important a crown jewel it is for the Ruby Hill Park community.

French Davis: Give us a rundown of the history of Levitt Denver — how this whole thing got started and the journey to where you are today.?

Chris Zacher: The idea of a performance space in this park was a dream in the 1950s when the park was first created. The bowl we are in received its saddle shape in anticipation that one day an amphitheater would sit at the bottom of the hill. Fast forward to 2009, Denver Parks and Recreation is working on a master plan for Ruby Hill Park and the idea surfaces again. At the same time, a gentleman by the name of Gordon Robertson had just accepted a position with Parks and Rec to lead lead park planning and construction. Gordon moved here from Arlington, Texas where they had just began construction on a Levitt. Knowing that the City would need additional funding to build something, and based on the non-profit model, a connection was made with the Levitt Foundation. The City and the Levitt Foundation spent the next three years working on a feasibility study. In July of 2012, they decided to move forward and tapped me to lead the charge. I spent the next five years creating an independent non-profit, working through an operational agreement with the City for the facility, raising money, building awareness, and assisting in the design and construction of the facility.

FD: What makes Levitt different than the other outdoor venues in Colorado?

CZ: We can start by pointing out that there is not another outdoor music facility in Denver proper. I had never really thought about this before taking on this project. We live in a market where spending time outside is what everyone does. As a city and state, we brag about the sheer number of days of sunshine and amazing the weather we have and how much time we all spend in the outdoors. We have a robust music scene and two large outdoor music festivals that celebrate local music. Yet until July 20, 2017, we did not have an outdoor music venue anywhere close to our City center. That just seems crazy to me.

Levitt is different in many ways but any music venue can say that. What really sets us apart is that we are a mission-driven non-profit working to increase access to the arts for patrons and artists. We produce 50 FREE high-quality concerts every summer. We spend countless hours during the off season scouting talent and tracking bands. This place was built to launch careers. It’s much easier to book a known commodity and sell tickets.

FD: Talk about what Levitt really means to local professional musicians.

CZ: Hopefully it’s a game changer for them. I can say without a doubt that this venue was designed with the artist in mind. In 2014 we held an open forum discussion at The Oriental Theater to talk to musicians and industry professionals. We wanted their ideas on what they would do if they were building a venue. We took those ideas back to the architect, worked through them, and incorporated as many of those ideas as possible into the design. Most of these touches are not something the general public will notice, but for musicians, riggers, sound and lighting techs, etc. they notice them. FD: How have the first couple of shows gone? What are some of the things you’re hearing visitors say? Performers? Ruby Hill neighborhood residents?
