As a private nonprofit organization based in Boulder County, Special Transit provides transportation and mobility options that improve the quality of life for older adults, people with disabilities and others with limited mobility. It began in 1979 with less than $100,000 in funding, six borrowed vehicles and a handful of employees. Today, it has a $13 million budget, a fleet of 108 buses, 220 employees and serves 18 communities in five counties. In addition to its nonprofit paratransit service, travel training and mobility management program, Special Transit operates the HOP, access-a-Ride and call-n-Ride services under contract with the University of Colorado-Boulder, the city of Boulder and RTD. Through these combined services, the organization provided more than one million trips in 2010.
