How to get your “I Voted” Sticker

Cool, crisp fall air, porch pumpkins, sweet treats and spooky parties can all mean one thing: election season. While the US government as not caught up to the ease of voting by text ala Dancing with the Stars there are many ways to ensure you get your “I Voted” sticker this fall.

The old-fashioned way

Nothing demonstrates true democracy like lining up with your fellow constituents to cast your vote. According to data collected during last year’s presidential election, 39.6% of voters still prefer to vote in person. If you have the time and energy to deal with lines, the excitement of your local polling station can be unmatched come November 4th.

Early and in-person

While the energy of election day may carry some pizzazz, you should avoid running out of time. Though you might miss out on the communal buzz of democracy, you can vote in-person as early as October 27th. Some polling stations have custom or unique stickers, so voting early can be a great way to ensure you get one.

Ballot drop box

Busy and want to drop off your ballot while running errands, many drop boxes also have stickers available. Go to GoVoteColorado.gov to find a location.

By Mail

Your mail-in ballot is the easiest way to vote. However, it can bring about some worry. By registering for BallotTrax, you make sure your ballot is received and counted, and it also provides you with a digital sticker.

Volunteer

While election day is around the corner, it is not too late to sign up to volunteer. You can look for volunteer opportunities through your county website or find a political group you are aligned with. In helping with Get Out the Vote activities or being a pole watcher, not only will you promote democracy, but you may get a sticker as well.

Back to School

School is starting back up, and whether you are in school, have children, or are a former student, it is hard not to feel nostalgic for the first day of school. Just as Tom Hanks offered Meg Ryan in 1998, “I would send you a bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils, if I had your name and address.” Since I don’t, I’ll offer some suggestions to celebrate the back-to-school season.

Sip, shop, and read

A fresh read for the fall season is sure to bring out your inner academic.  The Read Queen in Lafayette has a mix of new and used books. There is an air of comfort in this snug shop, which is a mix of personal library and hip café, transporting you back to your student days.

Have an ice cream social

If they are good enough for kindergartners, they are good enough for me. Get your friends and family together for an ice cream social. Invite that new pal you just haven’t had time to connect with yet and make it a low-stakes community-building day. Sweet Cow Creamery in Louisville has the perfect outside space for the kids to chase each other around while you visit with old and new friends.

Take a class

You don’t need to be enrolled in school to keep learning and growing. To spark your creativity and meet new people, try an improv class. Although this may sound a bit intimidating  to even the most extroverted butterfly, improv is a great way to challenge the mind, engage imagination, and improve public speaking skills. The Improv Collaborative has new classes starting this September.

Go back to school shopping

This does not need to be a practice in consumerism, but finding a new piece of clothing, shoes, a pack of pens. Find something that makes you feel good and donate something that no longer bring you joy. It is a new school year, just as you did at 14, it is time to reinvent yourself.

Support Education

With the dismantling of the Department of Education, public schools need  our help more than ever. Regardless of where you stand politically, it’s now on us as a community to support student

How to take part in the good fight

Helpless. That is how many feel as the world continues to turn while seemingly on fire. While money may be the most significant player in the fight, the individual can make a difference. Impact can be done through the donation of time, money, or the written word. Even a few minutes a day can help protect the vulnerable populations who are under attack from the current administration.

Volunteer for immigrant rights

The current administration has made it a mission to “reduce and control” immigration. This means hard-working individuals are getting taken without warning, being dragged away from their families, homes, and lives without much hope of being able to return.

The Colorado Coalition for Immigrant Rights, located in Denver, is seeking volunteers. Anyone with any skills, from cold calling to providing legal help, can sign up to help out.

Write a letter to defend gender-affirming care

Rep. Margarie Taylor Green is pushing to promote a bill that would criminalize physicians providing gender-affirming care. This bill will be going to a vote in the House of Representatives.

You can write to your state representative asking them to vote no on H.R. 3492.

Donate to protect reproductive rights

Access to abortion is legal and currently protected in Colorado. This means it is a safe-place for patients to travel to receive care. However, this is a financial burden to reproductive health care facilities. Donating to Planned Parenthood of the Rockies can help provide care to patients who are not able to afford it, especially after traveling over state lines.

Preserve the National Parks

Not only is it important to protect wild spaces for the diverse ecosystems and enjoyment of future generations, but cutting funding has led to 24% of the Park Service employees losing their jobs. The National Parks Conservation Association recommends writing a letter to Congress, asking to vote against additional budgets that are impacting the parks.

When I moved to Colorado a long time ago from the East Coast, the biggest disappointment for me was that, in a landlocked state, there aren’t as many beach options. But that doesn’t mean that your local area doesn’t have plenty of opportunities for you to don that cute bathing suit you picked up over the winter and swore you would find an opportunity to wear this summer. So, for this editor’s pick, we wanted to rank up the best excuses to put on a bathing suit in your area or that you can set up your own backyard:

Boulder Creek
It may not be big for swimming, but one thing that Boulder Creek is known for is tubing, which is a lot of fun in the summer. With a lot of snowmelt, the creek tends to be nice and cool, even in the summer.

The Great Outdoors Water Park
Probably the biggest and best water park in Boulder County, The Great Outdoors offers fun for the whole family while also going out of their way to make the park handicap accessible.

Boulder Reservoir
If you’re looking for an actual beach in Colorado, there may not be any coastline, but there’s the sandy shores of the Boulder Reservoir that’ll make you feel like you’re on the coast again. It’s open from Memorial Day through Labor Day every year.

Scott Carpenter Pool
Not looking to come home with sand between your toes? Scott Carpenter Pool is a great location if you’re just looking to enjoy a swimming local swimming pool either for yourself or your family.

It seems to be protest season in Colorado, with protesters taking to the streets on multiple occasions to protest the policies and actions of the Trump administration. We wanted to take a moment to run down our five favorite protests to hit the streets thus far.

#50501 Protest on February 5

Protesters came together in all 50 states to protest Trump’s actions at state capitols, and Colorado was no exception with protests, speeches, and marches held all day on February 5. By the time this prints, there will have been a second #50501 protest on March 15.

March 4 Liberty on March 4

Similarly, protesters came together on March 4 to protest the Trump administration’s policies.

Tesla Takedowns

There have been a number of big protests at Tesla dealerships, particularly at the Tesla dealership in Superior, taking advantage of Elon Musk’s well-known brand to make a very visible protest against the billionaire.

International Women’s Day on March 8

Thousands of protesters came together on International Women’s Day to protest for women’s rights causes amidst the Trump administration’s war on women.

The Next Protests

There’s a lot more protests scheduled, including the April 5 event that’s going to be happening all over the country. Keep your ears open for the next big protest in your area.

As the Trump administration 2.0 takes aim at marginalized groups and runs roughshod over the rule of law, it’s easy to become discouraged and pessimistic. Music often does a lot to lift spirits, and this is a rundown of the best songs to listen to that can bring hope in the current political moment:

-”It’s Okay to Punch Nazis” by Cheap Perfume –

Easily one of the best bands currently smashing things up in the Denver punk scene, Cheap Perfume remind us not to normalize the far right in this track from their 2019 album Burn It Down. It’s a reminder that, just because a Nazi got a PR firm doesn’t mean they’re not a Nazi.

-”Old Man Trump” by Ryan Harvey feat. Ani DiFranco and Tom Morello –

“Old Man Trump” is actually a song that legendary political folk singer Woodie Guthrie wrote back in 1954, not about Donald Trump, but about Donald Trump’s father Fred Trump, who owned an apartment complex Guthrie lived in called Beach Haven where Guthrie felt that Trump profited by stirring up racial hatred in the area. Guthrie never recorded the song, but a few other artists have, and the 2016 version with Ryan Harvey, legendary feminist folk artist Ani DiFranco, and world-famous activist and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello is easily the best recording of it.

-”Make America Great Again” by Pussy Riot –

You probably remember Russian punk collective Pussy Riot from the 2012 incident when they were jailed for staging a protest/performance at Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Saviour that was critical of the church’s support of Vladimir Putin, leading to human rights groups around the world calling for their release. Their 2016 track “Make America Great Again” is more of a light-electronic pop song reminding us of what could actually make America a great country: letting in immigrants, listening to women, and not killing Black people.

-”Ascension” by Gorillaz feat. Vince Staples –

On virtual hip-hop group Gorillaz’s 2017 album Humanz, which features a laundry list of collaborators throughout the entire album, Gorillaz’s mastermind Damon Albarn told all the collaborators to imagine a terrible dark future in which Trump won the 2016 Presidential Election. Recording well before the election, everyone imagined this to be a remote possibility, but they still reflected the horror of the situation. Vince Staples’ contribution, “Ascension,” offers up a critique of American culture and a reminder to enjoy life before the world ends.

-”Pursuit of Liberty” by Bad Cop/Bad Cop –

Bassist and vocalist Linh Le of California’s all-girl outfit Bad Cop/Bad Cop is the daughter of immigrants who fled Vietnam for the United States during the Fall of Saigon, as she reminds us that America was once a place that welcomed immigrants. As she shouts “Borders are baseless, there’s one human race!” it’s hard not to agree with her and remember the importance of looking out for all humans, regardless of where they hail from.

With the election of Donald J. Trump imminent, or already passed depending on when you read this, these are our picks for organizations you can get involved with or give to that are protecting democracy as well as ones protecting those most under threat right now:

• ACLU Colorado: Historically, whenever important rights are being protected, it’s the ACLU who’s doing it. ACLU’s Colorado chapter does really important legal work taking the cases that have defined the civil rights movements. I shudder to think of where we’d be without the ACLU.
• Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains: Whether it’s providing sexual health checkups or screenings for STIs or helping trans people get prescriptions for their hormones— and yes, sometimes for abortions, deal with it —Planned Parenthood is there for you when you need them most. They are under serious threat right now but, as the organization always says, these doors don’t close.
• BLM 5280/SURJ: Black Lives Matter 5280 and the adjacent organization SURJ which gives white allies a place to organize for racial justice, are doing important work in the community all the time. White supremacy is on the rise and racial justice is going to be an even bigger challenge in the years to come.
• Transgender Center of the Rockies: There are so many services that the Transgender Center of the Rockies offers that I don’t have space to list all of them, but they include counseling, STI testing, and Marsha’s Closet which is a space where trans people can try on new clothes in a safe environment. It also happens to be the first place that I told anyone in person that I was transgender. I always encourage people to support the work they do.
• The Trevor Project: I can personally attest that I’ve heard a lot of queer people talking about losing hope after Trump was elected again, and The Trevor Project’s important work to prevent LGBTQ+ suicides, including their 24/7 crisis line for LGBTQ+ youth, is going to become even more important.

Best Festivals, December 2024

Great minds think alike, as both Erie and Louisville are hosting separate events, both called the “Parade of Lights,” on the same day, December 6. The Erie event from 4:00-9:00 features choir performances by local schoolchildren at Orchard Community Church, visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus at Coal Creek Park, and a parade that kicks off from Perry Street & Briggs and ends up Kattell St. and Cheesman. Louisville’s event similarly features choirs at Walnut & Main, visits with Santa behind Bittersweet Cafe, and a parade that heads up Main Street from South Street to Elks.

Not to be outdone, the City of Boulder itself has the Lights of December Parade going on December 7 at 6 p.m. Kicking off at 15th and Walnut and finishing at 15th and Spruce, the parade features spectacular floats from local churches, schools, businesses, and non-profits, to be capped off by an appearance from Kris Kringle himself.

Santa is making a lot of stops in Boulder County this year, as he’s also planning to stop by the It’s a Wonderful Life in Lafayette Holiday Celebration that’s happening on December 8 at Lafayette Plaza from 4:00-6:00 p.m.. In addition to a Santa photo op table near Lafayette Historical Society‘s Old Betsy, there’s also going to be a tree lighting and train rides on the Lafayette Express. Plus there’s a no-host bar for the adults and food from Sideboard Lafayette and Round Table Pizza, making it an event for anyone.

CU Boulder’s Holiday Festival, taking place from December 6-8, is a celebration of holiday music with performances from student choirs, bands, faculty orchestras, and guest performers brought to you by the renowned CU Boulder College of Music.

For those who want to not just take a picture with St. Nick but hang out with him, too, Superior Winter Fest also features skating with Santa, as well as a winter market, a hot cocoa bar, cookie decorating, and s’mores stations.

As Christmas isn’t the only holiday being celebrated this season, CU Boulder’s Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) is holding a Kwanzaa Celebration at Abram’s Lounge on December 5 from 5:00-6:45. Geared not only towards CU students but also towards community members who want to learn about and celebrate the holiday, the event will feature traditional rituals and a Kwanzaa feast for attendees.

First Friday is a free arts event that is held at the Bus Stop Gallery and the Nobo Art Center. It features monthly exhibits, live music, and even demos. Visitors can take a self-guided tour through various mediums to get their creative fix.

Cabaret Diosa will be held at the Boulder Theater on November 1st, and entertain viewers with a world-class orchestra and a comedic performance.

In honor of Dia de Los Muertos, there will be a procession that’s free to attend on November 2nd at the New Local Gallery. Longmont Museum will have its Dia de Los Muerto through November 5th.

Beyond the Mountain Brewing is hosting an open mic night on November 5th. This event occurs every Tuesday, and is free to attend.

The award-winning podcast Criminal, is coming to Boulder on November 13th at 8:00 pm. Tickets run $35-45 and pay for live storytelling.

Knuckleball at The Aggie Theatre

There’s no arguing just how completely cratered the live music industry is in Colorado — and the nation, for that matter — amid the COVID-19 pandemic. If you’re suffering withdrawal, here’s a rare gem of an opportunity to support a great local act and the venue hosting it at the same time: Knuckleball at The Aggie Theatre on Nov. 27. Their psychedelic-rock-bordering-on-guitar-driven-jazz-fusion sound is at home in the playlists of many Colorado music fans, and this looks to be a pretty low-risk live show, with reserved-table seating and mask requirements for all attendees.

Dia de los Muertos at Longmont Museum extended

The official Day of the Dead is Nov. 1, but the Longmont Museum is extending its celebration all the way through Jan. 9, 2021, so you have ample time to check out the 20th anniversary of Longmont Museum’s annual Dia de los Muertos exhibition — while observing social distancing. The exhibit examines altars and art work of renowned Colorado artist Tony Ortega, who provides paintings, prints, mixed media, illustrations and more. There is also a newly commissioned mural in downtown Longmont you can view online at longmontcolorado.gov.

Drawing Parallels at Museum of Boulder

The Museum of Boulder has asked the community for help with its upcoming exhibit titled Drawing Parallels: Community Art & Artifacts from 2020 which is to be on display through March 1, 2021. The exhibition features the stories of 2020, from the civil rights movements to the pandemic and more, all with an eye on Boulder’s past and present. Submissions will be from local artists, frontline workers and community members, and will provide a fascinating exhibition with plenty of opportunity for discussion and contemplation of this chaotic year.

Shantell Martin at Denver Art Museum

The Denver Art Museum displays the work of Shantell Martin in an exhibit titled Words and Lines through Jan. 31, 2020. Words and Lines is an interactive multimedia installation featuring the work of the New York-based contemporary artist, including an interactive wall with triangular boxes that rotate, as well as an animated video projection and third section devoted entirely to Martin’s drawings – all in Martin’s signature black and white. In addition, elements of the installation are visible throughout the museum, adding a fun element of surprise to every visit to the Denver Art Museum.

While traditional live theatre is still not an option in this Pandemic climate, the team at Audacious Theatre has devised a fun way to entertain you this Halloween. This new immersive event is called Murder at the Drive-In and tells the story of the Shining Light Drive-In, which has decided to host a series of the best horror movies of all time. Of course, things do not go as planned and chaos ensues. Audience members purchase tickets for $50 per car and remain in their car for the duration of the show, which lasts about one hour. The story unfolds over the radio, on the movie screen and with socially distanced, masked actors performing all around them. There is even an option to upgrade your ticket to be closer to the gore, which will paint your car in (washable) blood for your drive home. Downtown Pumpkin Festival at Foundry Plaza in Loveland

In a normal year, Halloween bifurcates in two directions: debaucherous intimate adults-only parties and club nights, and wholesome family-oriented trick-or-treating. This year, both activities bring more COVID-related risk than is worth the reward. However, the good folks over in Loveland have worked hard to put together a family -friendly event in this year’s socially distanced Downtown Pumpkin Festival at Foundry Plaza, featuring pumpkin carving, a farmer’s market, local artists, music and arts and crafts vendors. Vote at your local ballot drop-off

Every election matters, and every election has consequences. Perhaps the most dire of which resulted from the Presidential election of 2016 where the nation handed over 300 federal court justices and 2 (as of press time) SCOTUS seats to the minority ruling Republican party, with a third on the way. And both Clarence Thomas and Stephen Bryer are past retirement age for the seat, so two more are quite possible in the next four years. So it’s time to do your job. On Nov. 3, 2020, vote. Right On! at the Museum of Boulder

The important Museum of Boulder public art installation is on display through November 4, and this is the perfect time to take a few minutes to check out this discussion-worthy work of art. The piece, titled Right On! by Angie Eng features a series of skin-toned plaques, each displaying dates of important civil rights cases from 1865 through 2020. In addition, this public art display is interactive — you can use your phone to scan QR codes on each plaque to read a one-sentence description of the significance of each date, and the plaques are for sale by the artist to help raise funds for civil justice and the arts, with 50% of the proceeds benefiting the ACLU and Creative Catalyzers. Day of the Dead at Longmont Museum

The annual Longmont Museum Day of the Dead celebration is still scheduled for this year, with shorter hours, social distancing, and masks required. This is the holiest Jewish Holiday of the year, marking the end of the New Year celebration and a Day of Atonement for sins.

The term “scapegoat” comes from the biblical tradition of a rabbis placing everyone’s sins into a goat and tossing it off a cliff.

In 1958, Virginia Rabbi Emmet A. Frank took a strong stand in his Yom Kippur sermon against segregation, igniting a wave of local anti-Semitism.

Jews fast for 24 hours; It’s traditional to donate at least the amount one would spend on family meals for that day to the needy.

It’s the only Jewish holiday that starts before Sundown.

Boulder Creek Festival

What do Bonnie and the Clydes, The Alcapones, the Lionel Young Band, Jyemo Club, and the Dead Phish Orchestra all have in common? All of these killer local bands are performing at the unofficial kick-off to summer: The perennial Boulder Creek Fest.

Juneteenth Festival at Five Points in Denver

On Sept. 22, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation —  setting Jan. 1 1863 as the official date for the release of all enslaved people throughout the former confederacy. But Texas, being geographically isolated from the rest of the South, hung on for two more years, until finally liberated on June 19, 1865 by the Union Army. In celebration of that date — the day when the entire nation finally stood free of the scourge of slavery — the Historically black neighborhood of Five Points in Denver hosts one of the biggest Juneteenth celebrations in the nation. It’s a fantastic summer festival filled with educational events, unparalleled music and some of the best food Colorado has to offer. And it’s free for the whole family. Romeo and Juliet at Dairy Center for the Arts

The Peak to Peak Players present a classic of their own with their upcoming production of Romeo and Juliet. Lettuce at Red Rocks

“Let us play?” Those three words – spoken whenever they crashed jazz clubs in the Boston area looking for a gig – germinated the seeds of what would grow into Lettuce — the Berklee-bred funktet of top-caliber musicians that has backed up nearly everyone who’s anyone over the last 25 or so years. They just finished up work on their 6th studio outing, Elevate, which drops with a big bash at Red Rocks on June 15 at their 4th annual Rage Rocks show. Northside at Su Teatro Cultural and Performing Arts Center
