Did you know the character of Alice (with all her adventures) was based on a true story? The ballet begins with a prologue explaining the relationship between the real Alice Liddell and her family’s friendship with author Lewis Carroll in 1800s Cheshire, England (the county that inspired the name of the mischievous striped cat we all know…)
In the ballet, Alice’s mother is said to have inspired the character of the Queen of Hearts, and her father the King of Hearts; her grandparents re-appear as the March Hare & Dormouse, and her twin sisters morph into Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum. And of course, we can’t forget the heroine, Alice herself!
