Event Details

Fall of Freedom / Anna Tsouhlarakis

Reception: May 1, 7 AM – 11:30 AM

Exhibit: On view through June 30, 2026

East Window joins forces with Fall of Freedom, featuring Edges of the Ephemeral by Anna Tsouhlarakis. She employs the template of parking signage, both familiar and authoritative, to explore Navajo (Diné) mythology and legend around multiple worlds. The artist asked questions of her Navajo community regarding their thoughts on the Navajo cycle of worlds, specifically about their beliefs of reaching a state of harmony, or “hozho”, in the world today. The responses were incorporated into this work.

Located on the east side of the building, our exhibit window is designed for the presentation and outdoor viewing of artworks until 11:30pm every day.

Anna Tsouhlarakis (Navajo, Creek, Greek) works in sculpture, installation, video, and performance. She received her BA from Dartmouth College with degrees in Native American Studies and Studio Art. She went on to receive her MFA from Yale University in Sculpture. Her work has been part of national and international exhibitions at venues such as Rush Arts in New York, the Art Gallery of Ontario in Toronto, the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Crystal Bridges Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, and the National Portrait Gallery. Tsouhlarakis has participated in various art residencies including Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, Yaddo, and was the Andrew W. Mellon Artist-in-Residence at Colorado College for the 2019-2020 academic year. She was awarded a Creative Capital Grant in 2021 and recently received a 2022 Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award. Her work will be in the 2026 Whitney Biennial. Tsouhlarakis lives with her family in Colorado and Maine.
