City of Boulder and Boulder Chamber announce annual lighting of the Boulder star

Star lighting on Veterans Day, Nov. 11 through the new year

BOULDER, Colo. – The City of Boulder and the Boulder Chamber are pleased to announce the annual lighting of the Boulder star, which will illuminate Flagstaff Mountain beginning Veterans Day, Nov. 11, to celebrate the holiday season and honor a cherished Boulder tradition that has brought joy to the community for decades.

The Boulder Star has been a beloved symbol of the holiday season since 1947, when members of the Boulder Junior Chamber of Commerce first installed the illuminated star on Flagstaff Mountain. For 78 years, this iconic landmark has served as a unifying symbol for Boulder community members and visitors. The tradition has been carried forward by generations of volunteers and community partners who have ensured the star continues to shine each year.

As proud stewards of the Boulder star, the Boulder Chamber and City of Boulder invite the community to a livestream hosted on the Boulder Chamber YouTube channel, beginning at 6 p.m. on Nov. 11.

This year, the Boulder star has been improved with an innovative remote sensor that will conserve energy by ensuring the star turns on and off at precisely the right time. This technology enhancement will also automatically turn off the star during high winds to prevent fire danger. The improvements ensure that the Boulder Star can continue to be enjoyed by future generations while prioritizing the protection of Boulder’s open space and mountain environment.

The City of Boulder and Boulder Chamber remind community members to view the star from afar. The area around the star is closed to the public due to natural resource damage and protection of sensitive wildlife habitats. Find a list of open spaces to view the star from afar on the city website.
