Boulder Ballet launches its 2026–2027 season at Chautauqua Auditorium with [In]Human, a bold and versatile program that explores the intersection of instinct and identity through three striking contemporary works.

The evening opens with Over Glow, a refined yet playful exploration of movement and light. Set within a shifting palette of color, the work moves with exhilarating speed and physicality. Sleek ensemble passages and intimate duets reveal a world that is both kinetic and luminous.

In Sun & Steel, choreographer Ben Needham-Wood reimagines and expands his earlier work into something primal and visceral. Set to the hypnotic score of Philip Glass, the piece dives into the tension between body and spirit – where flesh meets intention, and strength meets surrender. Athletic and unrelenting, it asks: where do we locate ourselves within our own physical humanity?

The program concludes with Natasha Adorlee’s How to Build a Dream Apparatus, a richly theatrical and character-driven world inspired by the music of Andrew Bird. Five distinct voices – The Builder, The Dreamer, The Mechanic, The Performer, and The Traveler – come together to construct something both mysterious and alive. What begins as fragments evolves into a poetic, shared creation: part invention, part sculpture, part dream.

Dynamic and imaginative, [In]Human reveals the many ways we build meaning – through motion, connection, and through the stories we carry in our bodies.

Boulder Ballet

The origins of Boulder Ballet began with the Ballet Arts Studios, founded in Denver and Boulder by former American Ballet Theatre dancer Larry Boyette in the 1970s. In 1981 the Boulder studio was purchased by Barbara Demaree and Wanda Tierney. The next year they started the first performing company, originally known as Boulder City Ballet. In 1995, the company and school became known as Boulder Ballet. Our rich history includes bringing classical, contemporary, and uniquely theatrical ballet to venues that range from Estes Park to Highlands Ranch. Boulder Ballet currently performs in Macky Auditorium, Chautauqua Auditorium, Vance Brand Auditorium, the Dairy ARTS Center, the Stanley Hotel, Lakewood Cultural Center, Littleton Town Hall, and outdoor amphitheaters in the Denver metro area for our summertime events. Since its founding, the professional company has been led by several notable former dancers, including Miljenko Banovic (Zagreb Ballet), Robin Haig (Royal Ballet), John Prinz (American Ballet Theatre), Peter Davison, Ana Claire, and Lance Hardin. With the 2022–23 season, we are thrilled to welcome our new artistic director, Ben Needham-Wood.
