Step into a vibrant musical time capsule with MahlerFest: London 1969, an imaginative performance blending classical tradition with the revolutionary spirit of late-1960s rock. This unique program pairs Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 (“London”) with selections from The Who’s groundbreaking rock opera Tommy, exploring how musical innovation bridges centuries.
Presented as part of the annual MahlerFest celebration of composer Gustav Mahler’s legacy, the concert features the MahlerFest Chamber Orchestra conducted by Ken Woods, along with the rock ensemble Who’s Mahler? performing and interpreting these iconic works.
The evening begins with a special talk, “Tommy and Rock Music’s Ambitious Turn,” offering insight into how rock music expanded into large-scale storytelling during the late 1960s.
