About This Event

MycoMorphosis: Dancing with Fungi brings living mushrooms to life through Japanese Butoh dance at Dairy Arts Center on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 7:30 PM. Directed by choreographer Iván-Daniel Espinosa, this mind-bending multimedia performance transforms fungi into musicians—bio-sensors convert mycelium’s electrical activity into live soundscapes while dancers move through a maze-like sculpture featuring fruiting mushroom colonies. Christopher Bryant Arnett composes electroacoustic music in real-time as dancers Stefan Bach, Corin Wiggins, Kenji Hirose, and Arlo Sage King perform slow-movement Butoh choreography inspired by fungal networks. This immersive interspecies performance dissolves boundaries between human and non-human worlds. Espinosa, a CU Boulder PhD candidate studying performance and mycology, has presented this acclaimed work at La MaMa NYC and Seattle International Butoh Festival.

Dairy Arts Center

Dairy Arts Center was founded in 1992 to provide cooperative workspaces for local artists and venues for live performance in Boulder County. Originally owned by the Watts-Hardy Dairy, the building’s transformation from a former milk-processing facility to a thriving multi-disciplinary arts hub for Boulder and beyond is a nationally recognized example of constructive urban development and renewal. The Dairy’s founders envisioned a community arts center where artists of all genres would create and inspire each other and the greater community.
