Event Details
Please join us for PLAN-Boulder County’s Annual Dinner and Meeting, a lively evening of food, drink, and discussion at the Boulder Elks Lodge on Friday, September 8, 2023, at 5:30 p.m. Tickets for this annual fundraising event are $75 and are on sale now.
Our guest speaker will be John Mirisch, outspoken council member and former mayor of Beverly Hills. Mr. Mirisch is an urban humanist, a pro-housing-choice/affordable housing activist, and an advocate for a steady-state economy.
Mr. Mirisch was elected to the Beverly Hills City Council in 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2022. He also served as mayor in 2013, 2016 and 2019.
A firm believer that local government, when done right, is the best form of democracy because it is closest to the people, Mirisch works with other like-minded elected officials throughout California to vigorously safeguard communities by protecting local rights from the incursions of Sacramento politicians and special interest groups.
Mirisch will speak on “Anti-Housing Speculation Policies and Solutions for American Cities and the Fantasy of Endless Growth.”
Mirisch’s talk comes at a time when the concept of local control over land use decisions in Colorado is under attack. During the last legislative session, Aaron Brockett and the progressive majority on the Boulder City Council voted to completely relinquish local control over zoning and occupancy limits (SB23-213) in our city to the Governor’s office. Furthermore, the City paid a lobbyist to advocate for this legislation, which would have stripped away local decision making from the City of Boulder. The issue and importance of local control is on the mind of many citizens this election season.
Bring your ideas and questions. We are looking forward to a lively discussion on housing policy, local control, and the environment.
PLAN-Boulder is entirely run by volunteers and relies on annual membership fees and donations for support. Discounted and student rate tickets are available. Please email advocate@planboulder.org with your request.
