Boulder Police announced this morning that Monday’s triple shooting at Boulder Stove & Flooring appears to be a case of workplace violence. Boulder Stove employee Robert Montgomery, who was upset about changes to compensation at the business, apparently shot and killed owners Sean and Staci Griffin and then turned the gun on himself.
Law enforcement responded to a 911 call at 11:09am on Monday from a male sales employee and a female customer, who reported hearing gunshots from an office in the back of the building. The two left the building and did not witness the shooting. Police arrived within minutes and found the three dead in the office, all suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
Police found a Smith and Wesson, M&P 9mm handgun in Montgomery’s hand; one round remained in the chamber. Police say both of the Griffins likely suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. The coroner’s office will make a final determination on cause and manner of death.
Investigators believe the gun was purchased by the suspect on May 7 and he recently practiced shooting with the weapon.
Additional evidence has been located at Montgomery’s home, and investigators now say the suspect was upset over a change in sales commissions and a bonus payment system at the business. He had spoken to fellow employees about his complaints and made written notations in a journal and on his computer. These writings are still being reviewed by investigators.
