One of Colorado’s main attractions is the great outdoors, but traditional park and open space designs often exclude people experiencing disabilities. For elders, children, or visitors unaccustomed to high elevation, it’s much easier to enjoy the beauty of nature when access is designed inclusively. City of Boulder’s Open Space & Mountain Parks division offers a free guide to accessible trails and sites for those using wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters.
Here are just five of the many gorgeous spots in Boulder County with great accessibility:
Flagstaff Mountain: Drive to the top for a picnic with views of the Continental Divide and enjoy family-friendly amenities like the new Nature Center and the mobility-friendly Sensory Trail
Chautauqua Park: Playground, grassy lawn, easygoing wildflower-studded trails like Baseline and Meadow, and the Flatirons in the background, offer something for everyone
Boulder Falls: A quick drive into Boulder Canyon, with a short, wide, easy trail to a magnificent waterfall
Mud Lake: Just north of Nederland, these smooth, short trails surround a gorgeous lakeside picnic spot
Bobolink Trail: Don’t neglect our beautiful prairies! Try Bobolink for a mobility-friendly creekside excursion
