Silencing Community through the selection of the Chief of Police

Aurora— 9/27/2022 — Today at the Aurora Municipal Center at 5:00 pm, The Aurora Police Oversight Committee announces the Request for Reinstatement, due to the lack of community voice involved in the selection process of the new Chief of Police. The lack of community engagement is a form of continued violence. Aurora Police Department said that they wanted to diversify, work with community, and change Aurora Police Department’s culture. The citizens of Aurora have spoken and made clear that they want a seat at the table, but that requirement has continued to fall on deaf ears. Today the Police Oversight Committee is requesting that we are reinstated and can finish the remaining 18 months of our commission appointment that was snatched away. Until the Office of Police Accountability, Transparency, and Transformation (OPATT) is more than a line item in our cities budget there must be continued community presence.
