Art show and events honor small animals who make life possible

BOULDER, Colo. – The city, Cool Boulder and local partners invite the community to participate in “Little Creatures,” a two-month celebration of local art, insects and other small animals that sustain life on our planet. “Little Creatures” brings together a variety of community events throughout August and September, including an art show, pollinator festival and many hands-on activities. The celebration is supported by the City of Boulder, Cool Boulder, Endangered Species Coalition and Creature Conserve.

Opening Event – Aug. 14, 4 to 6:30 p.m., Boulder Public Main Library
“Little Creatures” kicks off with an evening of learning and wonder in the Main Library, located at 1001 Arapahoe Ave. The opening event will start with a sneak peek of the insect art exhibit from 4 to 5 p.m. in the library’s Canyon Gallery. This will be followed by a musical performance by Melody Blauw and a presentation from world-renowned Entomologist Dr. Samuel (Sammy) Ramsey in the library theater. Attendees will experience the insect world up close and will learn how to help protect these tiny critters for generations to come. The event is free, but space is limited. Those interested in attending must register online.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of convincing people that these little creatures are the most fascinating thing they have ever stepped on,” said Dr. Sammy Ramsey.

The Art Exhibit
More than 90 Colorado artists celebrate native insects through poetry, sculpture, photography, stained glass and more. Their work reflects on the essential roles of insects and other small animals and our relationships with them. The show will live in the Main Library’s Canyon Gallery from Aug. 12 through Sept. 28. Community members can visit the show during the library’s regular hours.

“I think this art show will challenge how people feel about insects,” said Creature Conserve Fellow and artist Faith Williams Dyrsten. “We are looking forward to displaying work that strengthens care, compassion and appreciation for these tiny creatures. I think everyone will find something to connect with and learn from.”

Workshops and Activities – Throughout August and September
Community members are also invited to attend creative workshops, nature walks and panel discussions led by local artists and educators. Workshops span a variety of activities, from diorama building to watercolor painting and birding. Sign up for workshops and view a full list of activities on the “Little Creatures” events calendar.

Bee+ Boulder Festival – Sept. 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Central Park
Join the city and Cool Boulder for a fun-filled day of pollinator celebration, music, science-based activities and entertainment for the whole family. This free event will take place at Central Park, just west of the Boulder Farmers Market. Learn more on the city’s website.
