City of Boulder Launches StoryMap to Provide A Deeper Look at Boulder’ Civic Area History

BOULDER, Colo. — The City of Boulder is exploring the possibility of designating part of the downtown Civic Area as a Historic District. Community members are invited to learn more about the layers of history of the Civic Area, and provide feedback on the Proposed Historic District on a new interactive StoryMap.

The city recognizes that what we know today is an incomplete history of the area and is committed to continuing to explore and learn. The city also recognizes that while much of the built environment in the area is from the last 150 years, its history and significance goes much farther back in time.

The StoryMap features a timeline through key points in the development of the Central Park area and historic landmarks, and an interactive map tour highlighting buildings, homes and personal histories from the area.

“This designation process provides an opportunity to tell a more complete history of the area by asking new questions and using newly accessible primary documents,” said Marcy Gerwing, Principal Historic Preservation Planner. “While we know there is additional work to be done, this StoryMap is a way to fill in some of the research gaps and help lift up some of the stories that have been previously dismissed or overlooked.”
