BOULDER, CO-The Colorado Energy Office has awarded a $1.5 million grant to begin an electric bike
share program in Superior, City and County of Broomfield, Westminster, Lafayette, Boulder County and
Longmont. Commuting Solutions partnered with local governments to submit the Community
Accelerated Mobility Project (CAMP) application with the City of Longmont serving as the lead
applicant.
For the past two years, Commuting Solutions has led a study to evaluate the feasibility of regional bike
share in the northwest communities of Boulder, Boulder County, Louisville, Superior, Broomfield,
Westminster, Lafayette, Erie and Longmont. The study defined the capital and operations costs to
expand bike share in the northwest metro region and was the foundation of the CAMP grant
application.
The three-year grant will provide several communities with the opportunity to launch a local electric bike
share system while collaborating on its regional implementation. It will provide initial funding for the
capital and operations costs, as well as support public outreach and education efforts to activate
utilization of the new system, especially focusing on community members with fewer transportation
options.
A bike share vendor will be selected through a Request for Proposals (RFP) process. Local systems
may be phased in during the three-year grant contract, with the goal of initiating the first local system in
2025. Local governments who weren’t a part of the grant application can also participate in the RFP
process.
“The northwest metro region is very grateful for the funding to expand electric bike share within several
communities. This new transportation option will provide first and final mile connectivity to the US 36
corridor, CO 119 and other regional corridors within the local communities,” said Audrey DeBarros,
Executive Director of Commuting Solutions. “Through our regional planning efforts over the past 10
years to expand multimodal transportation options, we have envisioned regional bike share as an
important tool to connect the public safely and easily to the corridor bikeways and Bus Rapid Transit
systems.”
