A brief chat with Adrianna Marie

Yellow Scene: For a little background, when did you start making music, and taking it seriously?

Adrianna Marie: Well, I’ve been involved with music since I was a young child. My parents were folk singers in the 1950s and ’60s. So I grew up with it and I was doing musical theater when I was an adolescent. I did that all through my childhood years and studied it through school, and I started playing in bands in college. I’m from Connecticut.

YS: How did you discover the blues?

AM: I grew up listening to it. Even though my parents were folk singers, they played a lot of early blues – Memphis Minnie and that sort of stuff. I always liked it. I started singing blues – something that inspired me was, when I was in high school I worked on a production of Ain’t Misbehavin’ and there’s a lot of blues in that musical. That sparked my interest.

YS: Do you like playing Colorado?

AM: I haven’t played much in Colorado. We’re coming a long way from California to play the Colorado Blues Society’s 20th anniversary.

YS: What can we expect from the set?

AM: We’re gonna do quite a bit of material from our latest record, Double Crossing Blues, which was nominated for a couple of awards. We’re recording a new record late this summer, so we’re going to preview some of the material from that. We have a special guest that I’m bringing from California. My usual upright bass player has a medical thing and can’t play, so I was referred to a guy called John Hatton and he plays with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. He’s a phenomenal monster of a musician, a terrific guy, and very entertaining. I’m really excited – I think it’ll be quite a lot of fun. He climbs on his bass, and he’s an outstanding musician. He’s the go-to session guy for all the studios in Los Angeles, and he’s the nicest guy in the world.

YS: When this show’s done, what’s next?

AM: We’re fortunate enough to have been asked to play on some festivals this year as a result of our appearance at the Blues Music Awards. It’s a whirlwind this summer. I’m very excited about the upcoming record – I think it’ll be terrific.
