That Evil Word: Condemnation

Many area parents are concerned about letting their kids ride bikes or walk to Erie middle and elementary schools along County Line Road just north of Erie Village. There is no shoulder space for pedestrians. Town officials are building a trail along the road using a Safe Routes to School grant (worth about $161,000, just shy of half the overall cost). Seems like a slam dunk, except it’ll require buying private property, and some owners may not budge. Though Mayor Andrew Moore isn’t an advocate of eminent domain, he says child safety is more important.

What’s Next: Town officials are expected to approve a final sidewalk plan Aug. 14; the option that gobbles the least private land is the popular pick.
